  • Accidentally created VB.NET project instead of C#

    This should seem simple enough, but can't figure it out. I was porting a project out of MonoDevelop and into VS2008, but I accidently created the project as VB.NET instead of C#. Now ReSharper and any syntax highlighting is throwing a fit because it's trying to validate it as VB. How do I tell it to treat it as a C# project without creating a whole new one?

  • Using excel import wizard through code?

    I am creating a Generate Report button for some data in my application. The report will just generate a CSV file, which I then automatically launch in excel. Problem is with one of the data fields, is text and has leading zeroes (which I need to keep). When the file is automatically opened in excel, excel automatically trims these. Is there anyway I can get it so that it opens with the data in the format I want it. I know you achieve this normally by opening the CSV file from within excel and can do the import wizard. So one potential solution would be to auto open the import wizard when the app launches this file. I don't know if this is possible. Thanks for reading.

  • VS 2008 unstable after "Stop Debugging"

    This was on Windows Server 2003 X86, VSTS 9.0.30729.1 SP I used "Attach to process" to debug the program, but recently when I "Stop Debugging" by "shift + f5", I was prompted with an error saying "VS has an internal error and will be unstable". After that all the debug related menu items were disabled e.g. "Start debugging" and "attach to process" etc., even when I forcibly closed the program the situation remained, leaving me the only option to restart the solution. The only reason I can think of causing this is that I forcibly kill the process a lot, in order to able to rebuild it quickly, other than that I didn't do anything abnormal to VS. another sympton: when I tried to close the VS normally, I was prompted with "source file [] does not belong to the project being debugged" for all the files I opened inside of IDE, but the file does belong to the project.   • vs2008 attach to process, can't see which process

    Hi, In vs2003 (and vs2005(not sure about that)) when I attached to a process, before actually attaching I could see which process were running under w3wp (I have a couple of websites running locally) so I knew which exact .net application I was about to debug. however in vs2008 the window doesn't show up anymore.. now I have to attach it, come to the conclusion it was the wrong process, stop debugging and attach it to the other process (if I haven't forgot teh processid :P ) Is there a way to "enable" that interesting window to see with .net apps are runnig in that specific w3wp process? or am i missing something obvious?

  • C# menustrip designer

    Hi, I'm not sure when this happened but when I was trying to edit a menustrip in my program (in the VS designer), I noticed that the menu items had be grouped or merged. Like: File Edit Format Insert ... Instead of being able to click each menu item and add sub-items to them in the designer, they all were grouped together so I couldn't edit the menu items separately, it's quite painful. I couldn't find any properties related to this, so how could I ungroup the menu items in the designer?

  • How to change the outlining hover color in VS 2010?

    If i hover over the thin vertical bar on the left, it highlights the entire scope of the block that's to the right. When this scope is large, my entire screen flashes white (a consequence of my custom color scheme). Is there a way to change that color? i don't recall there being one when i made the theme.

  • VS 2008 debugger: How does it decide what Cassini port to run a web service under?

    I have a VS 2008 solution that includes a web site and a web service. I'm developing both at once, and it's helpful to be able to debug from one into the other. It occasionally can't find the web service. If I look in the web.config, I find the port number it's looking at is not the port number it auto-runs the service in when I use the debugger. For example, the web.config reference says something like: add key="mynamespace.mywebservice" value="http://localhost:55765/mywebservice.asmx" When I hover over the Cassini port icon, I find that the web service is running in port 55382 (or some other non-55765 port). No wonder it can't find it. Is there a way to enforce that the port number it runs under is the one specified in the web config? And if it's not using the web config port number to figure out where to run it... where does it decide? I know in VS2005, there was a way to specify the port number to use when debugging, but I can't find that anywhere in the web service project in VS 2008. This is really going to cause problems as more developers come on to this project - how can I fix it? Deleting and re-adding the web services to the project fixes it, but I'd literally have to do it a couple times a day, not an ideal solution.

    I want to add usage statistics for a .NET 4.0 library I write on CodePlex. I try to follow the step described here but my problem lies with the fact that what I write is a library and not an application. One of the steps is put the Setup and Teardown attributes. I thought about adding the Setup attribute on a static constructor or a different place that will run once per usage of the library. My problem lies with the Teardown attribute that should be placed on code that ends the usage. I don't know where to put this attribute. Is it possible to get usage statistics on a library? Maybe I can register on an event that will fire when the application unloads the dll?

  • How can I programmatically construct the object reference?

    Lets just say that I have three textboxes: TextBox1, TextBox2, TextBox3. Normally if I wanted to change the text for example I would put TextBox1.Text = "Whatever" and so on. For what I'm doing right now I would like to something like (TextBox & "i").Text. That obviously isn't the syntax I need to use I'm just using it as an example for what I need to do. So how can I do something like this? The main reason I'm doing this is to reduce code with a loop. Please keep in mind that I'm not actually changing the text of the textboxes I'm simply using that as an example to get the point across.

  • How to figure out who owns a worker thread that is still running when my app exits?

    Not long after upgrading to VS2010, my application won't shut down cleanly. If I close the app and then hit pause in the IDE, I see this: The problem is, there's no context. The call stack just says [External code], which isn't too helpful. Here's what I've done so far to try to narrow down the problem: deleted all extraneous plugins to minimize the number of worker threads launched set breakpoints in my code anywhere I create worker threads (and delegates + BeginInvoke, since I think they are labeled "Worker Thread" in the debugger anyway). None were hit. set IsBackground = true for all threads While I could do the next brute force step, which is to roll my code back to a point where this didn't happen and then look over all of the change logs, this isn't terribly efficient. Can anyone recommend a better way to figure this out, given the notable lack of information presented by the debugger? The only other things I can think of include: read up on WinDbg and try to use it to stop anytime a thread is started. At least, I thought that was possible... :) comment out huge blocks of code until the app closes properly, then start uncommenting until it doesn't. UPDATE Perhaps this information will be of use. I decided to use WinDbg and attach to my application. I then closed it, and switched to thread 0 and dumped the stack contents.   • Strategy for developing a multi function asp.net web application

    I'm about to start a new project and want some advice on how to implement. I need a web application which contains a booking module for reserving timeslots, and a time management module which will enable employees to clock in / clock out. If I am writing an update to the time managment module, I don't want to disrupt the booking engine availability by releasing a new solution containing both modules. to make things more difficult, there is some shared functionality like common users, roles and security. Here's a suggestion I've gotten, which sounds a bit cruddy, but may be functional. Write a 'container' web application which consists of basically a frame, and authentication / security features. This then has links which, will load the 2 independantly built and released web applications into the frame. I can see that say, if I wanted to update the time management module, I would only need to build and release this separately, and the rest of the solution would be 'untouched' Any better alternatives?

    I implemented the "Strategy" design pattern using an Abstract template class, and two subclasses. Goes like this: template <class T> class Neighbourhood { public: virtual void alter(std::vector<T>& array, int i1, int i2) = 0; }; and template <class T> class Swap : public Neighbourhood<T> { public: virtual void alter(std::vector<T>& array, int i1, int i2); }; There's another subclass, just like this one, and alter is implemented in the cpp file. Ok, fine!     I am accessing the facebook api and using the json.net library (newtonsoft.json.net) I declare a Jobject to parse the content and look for the specific elements and get their values. Everything works fine for the first few but then I get this unexplained nullexception error " (Object reference not set to an instance of an object) Now I took a look at the declaration but cannot see how to change it.     Hello everyone - I have this treeview control where I want to put uploaded files on the server. I want to be able to create the nodes and the child nodes dynamically from the database. I am using this query for getting the data from DB: SELECT c.Category, d.DocumentName FROM Categories c INNER JOIN DocumentUserFile d ON c.ID = d.CategoryId WHERE d.UserId = '9rge333a-91b5-4521-b3e6-dfb49b45237c' The result from that query is this one: Agendas transactions.pdf Minutes accounts.pdf I want to have the treeview sorted that way too. I am trying with this piece of code: TreeNode tn = new TreeNode(); TreeNode tnSub = new TreeNode(); foreach (DataRow dt in tblTreeView.Rows) { tn.Text = dt[0].ToString(); tn.Value = dt[0].ToString(); tnSub.Text = dt[1].ToString(); tnSub.NavigateUrl = "../downloading.aspx?file=" + dt[1].ToString() +"&user=" + userID; tn.ChildNodes.Add(tnSub); tvDocuments.Nodes.Add(tn); } I am getting the treeview populated nicely for the 1st category and the document under that category, but I can't get it to work when I want to show more documents under that category, or even more complicate to show new category beneath the 1st one with documents from that category.
