• Windows 7 upgrade licensing

  I'm having trouble wading through Microsoft's marketing information. Does anyone know if Windows 7 x86 to Windows 7 x64 is a valid upgrade path? I know you can't actually use the built-in "upgrade" installation path; this is more of a licensing question. Although that may have answered my own question: is this idea even possible? Or do "upgrade" versions of Windows function only when executed from inside the OS, and not when doing fresh installs? Thanks!

• Windows XP Pro SP3 stop error code 0x000000F4

  I have a system running Windows XP Pro SP3. My wife is the primary user of this system, and the last several days in a row, when she tries to log in to the system it gives her a BSOD with the stop error code 0x000000F4. The rest of the error codes change every time she tries to log on, but that one seems to stay constant. The error it gives me is: A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. The machine will also get stuck in a boot loop, where it keeps giving me the screen saying that windows did not start successfully, and to choose how to start windows. I have tried Safe Mode, Last known Good Config, and Normally, and all have resulted in either a return to the boot loop, or BSOD. What might this mean? How can I fix it, without doing a clean install?

• Windows server 2008 r2 console stuck at "waiting for user profile service"

  Hi, I have a windows 2008 R2 server, running on dell poweredge t300. Using hyper-v to run a windows 2008 R2 server also. Suddenly, today, my virtual console (on the virtual copy of windows 2008 server r2) will not let me login as administrator. It starts to login but then sticks at the message: Please wait for the User profile Service and is unresponsive to keypresses (incl ctrl-alt-del). The only way out is a crash. It starts up in safe mode without networking ok but not in safe mode with networking. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated Thanks

  I'm trying to enable NTLM authentication on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine with IIS 7.5 for a specific file in my web root. I've been following these instructions http://docs.moodle.org/en/NTLM_authentication#IIS_Configuration In the IIS Manager I open the Authentication module, disable anonymous authentication and enable Windows Authentication however according to every post I can find on the matter I should have a 'providers' option appear but I don't. I've double checked in Server Manager that the 'Windows Authentication' security feature is enabled for IIS. Any help anyone can offer would be great, Thank you!

• Rsync like windows backup tool

  Hi, I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

  I have a laptop at work that originally had Windows 7 Home Premium on it. We have a tech that comes in a few times a week to do some of our support work, and we asked him to upgrade the laptop to Windows 7 Professional. Before he left he told us the upgrade didn't work and that we'd have to order a disk. Upon checking the computer it seemed he had upgraded to Windows Professional 7 N. It had not previously been Home Premium N, so I'm not exactly sure how he managed to upgrade it to an N edition. I do not understand why he didn't run the Any Time Upgrade, but that is now irrelevant. How can I change Professional N to regular Professional? I would like to avoid having to restore it back to Home if possible.

  I have a stationary computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The primary (SSD) hard drive seems to have stopped working completely, it is not even visible in BIOS. The computer has a secondary hard drive (non-SSD, NTFS, 2TB). I have had Windows backup running and saving backups to that secondary drive. I am planning to buy a new SSD drive to replace the faulty one. I want to restore the backup to this new SSD drive. What is the most straightforward way to do this? A step-by-step description would be greatly appreciated. Further information: I have a Windows install DVD and the computer has a DVD-drive. The secondary drive is not bootable, so I cannot currently access it. The new SSD drive will probably not be identical to the original, so it might need different drivers

• Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running

  This morning I attempted to run Windows Update on two of my Windows 7 PCs (both are virtual machines), and I ran into this interesting pop-up error message. I have never encountered this problem before, so I was somewhat perplexed. From the message, my first thought was to see if the Windows Update service was running. It was. As usual, the solution is never so simple. I attempted to restart the service and reboot the PCs to no avail. So, I am off to the interwebs for a solution. I did find a solution to the problem, so I thought to post it for my future reference and for anyone else who may encounter this problem. I will be posting the answer shortly. If you have alternate solutions that have worked for you, please feel free to leave a post or comment.

  I know the answer is, depends on how you configure it... But bare with me - our IPSec Site-to-Site VPN is configured by one of the most trusted hosting companies. One of our clients expressed concerns that "Windows Server 2008 Server IPSEC is not ICSA certified and lacks some of the common features for maintaining VPN stability" (they refer to the lack of "auto keep live" feature). They also are saying that "Windows platforms are not recommended as VPN endpoints due to security concerns and this is one reason that the ICSA testing labs will not certify it as a valid IPSEC solution" (I couldn't find a proof to this one) Are there any whitepapers or references that can prove the security of Windows IPSec implementation? • After upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, I can't boot Windows anymore

  I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion and I can't run the installed Windows anymore. It seems the issue is that the Lion installation created extra partitions so the Windows partition has a different number one. It's disk0s4 instead of disk0s3 (if I recall correctly). Searching online found several discussions about it but only one with a proposed solution, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3199099, essentially: bootrec.exe /FixMbr bootrec.exe /FixBoot bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd which didn't work. bootrec.exe /FixBoot claims that no windows partition has been found.

  I am using Windows 7 and I am looking for a list of the different parameters to use in the Target line of a shortcut in Windows Explorer. For example: /n forces it to open a new window, even if it duplicates a window that is already open. /e uses Windows Explorer view (multi-paned) /root,X restricts Explorer to showing only the contents of file folder X (and its sub-folders) /select,Y automatically selects Y (either a file or folder). What other parameters exist? I have been searching online and cannot find anything.

  I have a Linux fileserver serving up /home for linux and windows users. I was able to connect from my windows client, but not from a DC. Then suddenly I could connect from the DC too. The linux servers run Centrify clients, and as such are part of the domain. All on same subnet. This is what the the log.smbd says, repeatedly: [2010/02/11 11:25:57, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.200.3. Error = Connection reset by peer On Windows it appeared as an "unknown error". EDIT: the error code is "0x80004005". We are developing a system depended on the samba share, and are worried this will appear again. It would be nice to pin point the root of this. Any ideas what this might be? Places to look?

  Windows 2003 can be configured as a VPN server that uses L2TP with a preshared key. Windows 7 can be configured to accept incoming VPN connections, presumably using PPTP. Is there a way to configure Windows 7 to accept incoming L2TP connections? The configuration settings for incoming connections is extremely sparse; I don't see any place to enter a preshared key or specify the protocol to use. Perhaps it is beyond the capabilities of Win 7, but I hold out hope that I'm overlooking some Group Policy settings or registry edits that allow it.

  Will installing Sun Virtual Box bash or interfere with my VMWare installtion? I don't need to run VMs from both Virtual-Machine software packages at the same time but I do need to run some older Virtual-Machines from Sun-Virtualbox on the same 64-bit Windows 7 host until I can migrate those VMs to VMWare. Before switching from Linux host to Windows host, I ensured to export the VirtualBox VM to an OVF "appliance" with intentions of importing into VMWare Workstation 7. But VMWare gives me an error stating it can't import it. Background info My old workstation host: 32-bit Ubuntu 9.04 running Sun Virtual Box 3.x hosting Windows-XP VM Guest for Windows Software app development (VS2008, etc) Needs I need to get my original Sun-VBox Windows-XP Guest running on my new Windows 7 Workstation either imported into VMWare or running on the Windows version of Sun-Virtual box (I have the VM-Guest Backed up and copied to the new computer data drive. New workstation host: 64bit Windows 7 running VMWare Workstation 7 to host 32bit Ubuntu 9.10 for linux project work.

We have a very old application based on Omnis7 that needs to create and read/write files on drive C: when running as a restricted user. In Windows XP to give this permission is quite trivial using cacls. cacls C:\ /G Everyone:(C) The equivalent icacls in Windows 7 will not work. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(M) I have also tried the following. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(F) icacls C:\ /Grant Domain\user:(F) trying to create file with a restricted user gives this C:\>copy nul text.txt Access is denied. 0 file(s) copied. After applying the icacls permissions above the result changes to this. C:\>copy nul text.txt A required privilege is not held by the client. 0 file(s) copied. Is this an issue with the way I am applying the permissions? Or is Window 7 being extremely strict?

  I have recently installed cygwin on a Windows 7 beta machine. Everything works great, except one little annoyance: The cygwin shortcut (Start-All Programs-cygwin-cygwin Bash Shell) cannot be pinned to the Start menu. My guess as to why is that I already have a "Console" window pinned to the start menu. My guess is that Windows sees that the two EXEs are the same and won't let me pin it. This would be fine except I cannot pin the window to the Dock either. While cygwin is running, WIndows interprets it as just a Command Window and won't let me pin it either. How do you pin the cygwin shortcut to the dock?

• Windows 7 - Virtualbox host only adapter doesn't get an IP

  When I create a new host only network adapter, it will not set the IP address I assign to it. After I save the IP address & netmask it looks like it works (I see the Windows 7 User Account Control verification box), but the IP address doesn't get stored on the adapter. I have tried adding/removing the adapter from within virtualbox and settings the values manually in the Windows aapter settings dialogue. I am using a Windows 7 host. Does anyone know why the settings don't get saved, or how to get more information?   I'm working on a corporate desktop (still) running Windows XP SP2. I recently received a new PC and am reinstalling all my tools. Something is different about this one in that it won't let me install Powershell 2.0. When I do, I get a popup: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator. This also occurs for other installs, like Service Pack 3 and Windows Installer 4.5. I'm aware this PC is under group policy restrictions, but I haven't narrowed down what restriction is preventing this install so that I can have the appropriate support team resolve it. What setting could be responsible for this?

  I need a way to login multiple users into windows at startup, in (XP/Vista/7) I need for each time windows starts, all registered users will automatically login and starts all apps in their startup folder under their own credentials. Any ideas how I could achieve this? i need a 'cheap' alternative to windows vps. lots of people need vps to run certain apps and leave it running. it's less likely they need full admin access other than installing those apps. instead of each users have their own vps running simple apps, it might be cheaper to have one multi-user server to accomplish this?

  Hi, I recently started having a frustrating problem with Vista on my laptop that I can't seem to solve. I'm trying to get it to have the vanilla taskbar settings - always shown, resizes the desktop area (as in, the space the taskbar takes up isn't available for fullscreen windows), and always on top. No matter what combination of settings and toggles I do, I can't get it. With the normal settings that achieve this (Only keep on top, and optionally locked, checked), I get: Desktop extends behind the taskbar (so icons and the like are behind it) Non-maximised windows appear behind it when overlapping. Maximised windows take the full area of the screen and are behind the taskbar Maximised Google Chrome takes the full screen size and is in front of the taskbar I tried googling and also just randomly toggling on and off the settings, haven't found a fix.

  I have Windows 7 64bit as my OS + SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I can connect to SQL Databases (2008), but cannot connect to a SQL 2005 database. I can, however, connect to the 2005 SQL Database on a PC that has Windows XP as the OS and also has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. So it seems that it works fine on XP but not on Windows 7 (32 or 64bit). is this an Operating System issue?   How can I find out to which filepath (or alias) a certain command input will point to, in the Windows command prompt? Specifically Windows XP, info on other versions also appreciated! On Unix systems I simply use: $ which commandname /a/commandname Or: $ type -a commandname commandname is aliased to `/b/commandname' commandname is /a/commandname commandname is /b/commandname And I am simply looking for the equivalent in the Windows Shell (specifically Win XP). I came to this general question, from a specific issue: I had installed robocopy.exe (version 026), but the command line "robocopy" always triggers version 010, and I would like to determine where this command points to, in order to correct this mistake.
