• python: os.system does not execute shell comand

  I need to execute shell command in python program (I have ubuntu). More specifically I want to create graph using graphviz in python script. My code is os.system("dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png") It does not work, but if I just type dot -Tpng graph.dot -o graph.png in command line then everything is fine. Do you know what the problem? Thank you! Edit: Does not work means that nothing happens, there are no errors. • How do I enable the globalmenu / appmenu on XFCE?

  I have tried various tricks I could find to install the global menu on xfce and lxde on the latest oneiric, but nothing worked. Does anyone have an idea on how to do that? Thanks. Here's what I've tried so far: the gnome global menu panel plugin (for lucid) via the xfapplet plugin (not in the official repos anymore) that can embedd gnome plugins into the xfce panel - unfortunately, the globalmenu doesn't show up in the xfapplet list of available gnome plugins (there's only one item in it) all instructions from an older question about globalmenu and its duplicate compiling manually the latest version from gnome2-globalmenu there is another question along with a solution for XFCE 4.8, but it's not working on Oneiric. It is also proposing to install the global menu applet from gnome using it via xfapplet. I've even found an XFCE-plugin for the global menu, but it keeps crashing when I add it to the panel - also I could not install all the packages due to some unmet dependencies I've added some code to ~/.config/xfce4/xinitrc as described in 10. of the FAQ of gnome2-globalmenu though I'm not sure what effect this should have.

• My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

  This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. No idea what this is or why it's running. When I try and kill arecord (as root), it just respawns and rebinds on the hardware. I'm in a very annoying situation where I don't know what is going on and don't know how to find out. I'm open to all suggestions to get this working again. Fire away. • .wine-pipelight folder not present

  Following the instructions on the pipelight installation page, I installed pipelight on Ubuntu 14.04. However, upon opening firefox the .wine-pipelight folder isn't present in my home folder, and I get the following errors: [PIPELIGHT:LIN:unknown] attached to process. Is there a reason why this folder isn't present, or why I'm getting these errors? Edit: Oddly enough, the .wine-pipelight folder is created wtih I open Nitro, although this still doesn't fix the issue.

• Gnome shell not starting at login, but can start from terminal (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 recently and for some reason it broke Gnome 3. The shell doesn't start up at login.   Raj, the Chennai JUG lead, together with others from that JUG, is interested in Visage, the JavaFX script language closely associated with Stephen Chin. He sent me the related lexer and parser and I started by having a look at them in the new version of ANTLRWorks being developed by Sam Harwell (who demonstrated it very effectively during JavaOne): Notice how the lexer and parser are shown in a tree structure, as well as in a cool syntax diagram. Next, I downloaded a bunch of JARs from here, so that packages such as from "com.sun.tools.mjavac" can be used, i.e., these are Visage-specific packages that aren't found anywhere except in the location below: http://code.google.com/p/visage/wiki/GettingStarted It turns out that there's also a Visage NetBeans plugin out there: http://code.google.com/p/visage/source/browse/?repo=netbeans-plugin Rather than recreating everything from scratch, i.e., generating ANTLR Java classes from the lexer and parser, I copied a lot of stuff from the site above and now a file Raj sent me looks as follows, i.e., basic syntax coloring is shown: For anyone wanting to seriously support Visage in NetBeans IDE, I recommend downloading the existing Visage NetBeans plugin above, rather than creating everything yourself from scratch, and then figuring out how to use that code in some way, i.e., add the JARs I pointed to above, and work on its build.xml file, which could be frustrating in the beginning, but there's no point in recreating everything if everything already exists.

• Open Source Software Development Center at University of Belgrade

  A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade, Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects.   I'm trying to install programs/files from the getdeb repo but get a "check your internet connection" error. Programs than I've tried include Qbittorrent and Mozilla-Plugin-VLC.   I'm getting errors in ~/.xession-errors. I'm running ubuntu 12.04 Many apps fail to run without mention of problems in the .xsession-errors file. I looked around and tried to resolve issues myself but failed so far. I have to say it's possible that the issue is related to me mounting /home on another partition. (I say possibly because stuff worked ok for a while.) Fortunately my .xsession-errors file is small enough to post here. You need additional steps for Eclipse Juno, because it does automatically detect and download MTJ (Mobile Tools for Java) plugin. The following instruction is for Eclipse Indigo. 1. Download Java ME SDK and Eclipse plugins from here. 2. Install Java ME SDK 3. Launch Eclipse 4. Go to "Help" - "Install New Software" 5. Click "Archive", and choose the Eclipse Plugin zip file you downloaded. Name is something like "Java ME SDK Plugin" 6. Choose Java ME SDK Tools, and select "Next". 7. • Gesture Based NetBeans Tip Infrastructure

  All/most/many gestures you make in NetBeans IDE are recorded in an XML file in your user directory, "var/log/uigestures", which is what makes the Key Promoter I outlined yesterday possible. The idea behind it is for analysis to be made possible, when you periodically pass the gestures data back to the NetBeans team. See http://statistics.netbeans.org for details. Since the gestures in the 'uigestures' file are identifiable by distinct loggers and other parameters, there's no end to the interesting things that one is able to do with it. While the NetBeans team can see which gestures are done most frequently, e.g., which kinds of projects are created most often, thus helping in prioritizing new features and bugs, etc, you as the user can, depending on who and how the initiative is taken, directly benefit from your collected data, too. Tim Boudreau, in a recent article, mentioned the usefulness of hippie completion. So, imagine that whenever you use code completion, a tip were to appear reminding you about hippie completion. And then you'd be able to choose whether you'd like to see the tip again or not, etc, i.e., customize the frequency of tips and the types of tips you'd like to be shown. And then, it could be taken a step further. The tip plugin could be set up in such a way that anyone would be able to register new tips per gesture. For example, maybe you have something very interesting to share about code completion in NetBeans. So, you'd create your own plugin in which there'd be an HTML file containing the text you'd like to have displayed whenever you (or your team members, or your students, maybe?) use code completion. Then you'd register that HTML file in plugin's layer file, in a subfolder dedicated to the specific gesture that you're interested in commenting on. The same is true, not just for NetBeans IDE, but for anyone creating their applications on top of the NetBeans Platform, of course.

  Hello, I've got a server from hetzner.de (EQ4) with 2* SAMSUNG HD753LJ drives (750G 32MB cache). OS is CentOS 5 (x86_64). How come two exactly the same specced drives have such a difference in write speed (see util%)? I haven't really paid attention to those speeds before, so perhaps that something normal -- if someone could confirm I would be really grateful. Otherwise, if someone have seen such behavior again or knows what is causing such behavior I would really appreciate answer. I'll also add that both "smartctl -a" and "hdparm -I" output are exactly the same and are not indicating any hardware problems. The slower drive was changed already two times (to new ones). Also I asked to change the drives with places, and then sda were slower and sdb quicker (so the slow one was the same drive). SATA cables were changed two times already.

  I'm trying to figure out how to operate a rather large Java program, 'prog'. If I go to its /bin/ dir and configure its setenv.sh and prog.sh to use local directories and my current user account. Then I try to run it via "./prog.sh start". So I'm no longer so certain that the process is always running when I ps for it, although the code sample above indicates that it at least runs erratically. I'll continue looking into this undocumented behemoth when I return to work tomorrow.

• jqtransform and collapsed DIV

  Hello, I am using a jQuery plugin called: jqtransform This plugin uses JavaScript to apply CSS styles to form elements. The problem that I have consists in the following scenario: I’m building a search page, with a advanced search option. When the page loads, the div called “advancedSearch” is hidden, and it will only show if the user clicks a element. Inside the div#advancedSearch I have several form elements. However, if I hide the div#advancedSearch with the CSS style: “diplay:none;”, the jqtransform plugin doesn’t work correctly with the elements that are hidden. So my solution was to hide the div#advancedsearch with JavaScript. This actually works, and it does not matter if it’s done after the document is ready or not. But… with the JavaScript solution, the div#advancedSearch stays visible for a couple of milliseconds… which is visually annoying. So I was wondering if the solution to this problem would be in the CSS, or in correcting the jqtransform plugin, or even in finding a way to immediately hide the div#advancedSearch with JS making it immediately hidden. UPDATE 1 After jeerose comment I decided to place here my function (please note that the <%= % are ASP.Net tags, that I use to get the images path) $('.toggleAdvancedSearch').click(function() { $('#advancedSearchWrap').slideToggle(250); $('form.jqtransform').jqTransform({ imgPath: '<%= ResolveClientUrl("~/masterpages/img/jqtransform/") %>' }); return false; }); UPDATE 2 To test the problem, I did the following: Added another element to the page, with the ID “applyStyle”, and onClick I call the $('form').jqTransform(); Disabled the the $('form').jqTransform(); from the load of the page. But if I expand the the div#advancedSearch and press the the a#applyStyle after, the problem is solved. However, if I run the page with the $('form').jqTransform(); function on the load, I cannot reapply it after with the pressing of the a#applyStyle. I think that the solution could be: disabling the all the elements that are inside the div#advancedSearch, and on the same function that expands the div, make It also apply the styles to the elements that are inside the div#advancedSearch. However, I don’t know how to do this (nether if this will work). PS: This seems to be a known issue with the plugin, but I cannot wait indefinitely for a solution.

Shortly after that, the Oracle Linux 6 RPMs were made available on our public yum server. Today we published the installation DVD images on edelivery.oracle.com/linux.   I got it to install nicely and it's all working, but I don't know which graphics card is being used nor how to switch between. I tried installing the official Nvidia drivers, but then I could not boot up my computer afterwards so I have not installed them again after doing a reinstall of Ubuntu. PS, if you have a grub install failure during install, the key is to tell it where to install the bootloader at the very beginning of the installation, on your partition selection screen (choose dev/mapper, not the /dev/sda it defaults to).
