• MVC2 Apps (and others) sharing WCF services and authentication

  Hi, I've seen several similar scenarios explained here but not my particular one. I wonder if someone could tell me which direction to go in? I am developing two (and more later) MVC2 apps. There will also be another (thicker) client later on (WPF or Silverlight, TBD). These all need to share the same authentication. For the MVC2 apps they (preferably) need to be single log on - ie if a user logs in to one MVC2 app, they should be authorised on the other, as long as the cookie hasn't timed out. Forms authentication is to be used. All the apps need to use common business functionality and perform db access via a common WCF Service App. It would be nice (I think) if the WCF is not publicly accessible (ie blocked behind FW). The thicker client could use an additional service layer to access the Common WCF App. What this should look like is: MVCApp1 - WCFAppCommon MVCApp2 - WCFAppCommon ThickClient - WCFApp2 - WCFAppCommon Is it possible to carry out all the authentication/authorization in the WCFAppCommon? Otherwise I think I'll have to repeat all the security logic in the MVCApps and WCFApp2, whereas, to me, it seems to sit naturally in WCFAppCommon. On the otherhand, it seems if I authenticate/authorize in WCFAppCommon, I wouldn't be able to use Forms Authentication. Where I've seen possible solutions (that I haven't tried yet) they seem much more complex than Forms Authentication and a single DB. Any help appreciated, Phil

• LINQ To SQL ignore unique constraint exception and continue

  I have a single table in a database called Users Users ------ ID (PK, Identity) Username (Unique Index) I have setup a unique index on the Username table to prevent duplicates. I am then enumerating through a collection and creating a new user in the database for each item. What I want to do is just insert a new user and ignore the exception if the unique key constraint is violated (as it's clearly a duplicate record in that case). This is to avoid having to craft where not exists kind of queries. First off, is this going to be any more efficient or should my insert code be checking for duplicates instead? I'm drawn more to the database having that logic as this prevents any other type of client from inserting duplicate data. My other issue is related to LINQ To SQL. I have the following code: public class TestRepo { DatabaseDataContext database = new DatabaseDataContext(); public void Add(string username) { database.Users.InsertOnSubmit(new User() { Username = username }); } public void Save() { database.SubmitChanges(); } } And then I iterate over a collection and insert new users, ignoring any exceptions: TestRepo repo = new TestRepo(); foreach (var name in new string[] { "Tim", "Bob", "John" }) { try { repo.Add(name); repo.Save(); } catch { } } The first time this is run, great I have three users in the table. If I remove the second one and run this code again, nothing is inserted. I expected the first insert to fail with the exception, the second to succeed (as I just removed that item from the DB) and the third to then fail. What seems to be happening is that once the SqlException is thrown (even though the loop continues to iterate) all of the next inserts fail - even when there isn't a row in the table that would cause a unique violation. Can anyone explain this? P.S. The only workaround I could find was to instantiate the repo each time before the insert, then it worked exactly as excepted - indicating that it's something to do with the LINQ To SQL DataContext. However, if the getMapwidth function gets called before it finishes loading, the program will fail. How can I make the class wait to accept function calls until after the file is loaded?

• LINQ to Entities exceptions (ElementAtOrDefault and CompareObjectEqual)

  I am working on a shipping platform which will eventually automate shipping through several major carriers. I have a ShipmentsView Usercontrol which displayes a list of Shipments (returned by EntityFramework), and when a user clicks on a shipment item, it spawns a ShipmentEditView and passes the ShipmentID (RecordKey) to that view. I initially wrestled with trying to get the context from the parent (ShipmentsView) and finally gave up resolving to get to it later. I wanted to do this to keep a single instance of the context. anyhow, I now create a new instance of the context in my ShipmentEditViewModel, and query against it for the Shipment record. I know I could just pass the record, but I wanted to use the Ocean Framework that Karl Shifflett wrote and don't want to muck about writing new transition methods. So anyhow, I query and when stepping through, I can see that it returns a record, as soon as execution reached the point where it assigned the query result to the e.Result property, it throws up the following exception depending on the query I used. • NHibernate.MappingException (no persister for) weirdness

  The weird part being that I have other tests that validate the mapping and even the method being called (Nhib session.SaveOrUpdate) that run just fine. The entire exception is below. Here is some debug output from a test that does work: Item type: Domain.Model.Projects.Project item: 007-00-056 ATM Machine Replacement Is transient: True Id: 0 NHibernate: INSERT INTO Projects (Code, Description) VALUES (@p0, @p1); select insert_rowid();@p0 = '007-00-056', @p1 = 'ATM Machine Replacement' Here is the same debug output before the exception: Item type: Smack.ConstructionAdmin.Domain.Model.Projects.Project item: 006-00-023 Refinish Casino Chairs Is transient: True Id: 0 The two tests are different in that the one that works is just testing the repository, and saving in memory test data. The failing one is saving data that has been converted from a legacy db (which has it's own session). The repository is also a replacement design for a different IProjectRepsitory that worked fine doing this, so the new repository is also a likely suspect here. Does anyone see what I'm missing or have some questions to narrow it down? • WiX: Prevent 32-bit installer from running on 64-bit Windows

  Hi everyone, Due to user confusion, our app requires separate installers for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. While the 32-bit installer runs fine on win64, it has the potential to create support headaches and we would like to prevent this from happening. I want to prevent the 32-bit MSI installer from running on 64-bit Windows machines. To that end I have the following condition: <Condition Message="You are attempting to run the 32-bit installer on a 64-bit version of Windows."> <![CDATA[Msix64 AND (NOT Win64)]]> </Condition> With the Win64 defined like this: <?if $(var.Platform) = "x64"?> <?define PlatformString = "64-bit"?> <?define Win64 ?> <?else?> <?define PlatformString = "32-bit"?> <?endif?> Thing is, I can't get this check to work right. Either it fires all the time, or none of the time. The goal is to check presence of the run-time msix64 variable against the compile-time Win64 variable and throw an error if these don't line up, but the logic is not working how I intend it to. • FileNotFoundException when running WiX CustomAction with COMAdmin interop

  I am trying to create a WiX custom action which will allow me to shutdown and clear down a COM+ package as part of an upgrade installation, or create and configure a new COM+ package as part of the initial installation. I previously had this running as a CustomAction within a standard Visual Studio MSI but this only allows the custom action to be executed after the files have been copied - which will fail as the package will still be running. The COMAdmin.dll has been added as a reference to the CustomAction project and is set CopyLocal=true. In the bin folder for the custom action project the Interop.COMAdmin.dll is present. The answer to this question seems to suggest that it should work. • Rails ActiveRecord - Best way to perform an include?

  I have three models: class Book < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :collections has_many :users, :through => :collections end class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :collections has_many :books, :through => :collections end class Collection < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :book belongs_to :user end I'm trying to display a list of the books and have a link to either add or remove from the user's collection. I can't quite figure out the best syntax to do this. For example, if I do the following: Controller class BooksController < ApplicationController def index @books = Book.all end end View ... <% if book.users.include?(current_user) %> ... or obviously the inverse... ... <% if current_user.books.include?(book) %> ... Then queries are sent for each book to check on that include? which is wasteful. I was thinking of adding the users or collections to the :include on the Book.all, but I'm not sure this is the best way. Effectively all I need is the book object and just a boolean column of whether or not the current user has the book in their collection, but I'm not sure how to forumlate the query in order to do that. • How to require fullscreen mode in a jQTouch application?

  I'm using jQTouch to develop a version of a website optimized for safari on the iphone. The jQTouch demo helpfully shows how to show an "install this" message for users not using full screen mode and hide it for those who are. When in fullscreen mode, the body should have the class "fullscreen." So you can hide the "install this" message for people who have already added your app to their home page by adding this css rule to your stylesheet: body.fullscreen #home .info { display: none; } What I'd like to do is require users to use the app in fullscreen mode only. When viewed from the regular browser, they should only see a message asking them to install the app. That message should of course be hidden otherwise. This ought to be really, really easy, so I must just be missing something obvious. I thought one way to do this would be to simply test for the class "fullscreen" on the body: if it's not there, use goTo to get to another div, or hide the other divs, or something like that. Strangely, however, this doesn't work. As a test, I've still got the original "info" message, as in the jQTouch demo, and it doesn't show up when I launch in fullscreen mode. So the body must have the fullscreen class. And yet I can't find any other trace of it: when I put this alert to test things after the document has loaded, I get nothing when launching in fullscreen mode: alert($("body").attr("class")); I also thought I might test for fullscreen mode by checking for the value of the fullScreen boolean. But this doesn't seem to work either. What am I missing? What is the best way to do this?

• AS 400 Performance from .Net iSeries Provider

  Hey all, First off, I am not an AS 400 guy - at all. So please forgive me for asking any noobish questions here. Basically, I am working on a .Net application that needs to access the AS400 for some real-time data. Although I have the system working, I am getting very different performance results between queries. Typically, when I make the 1st request against a SPROC on the AS400, I am seeing ~ 14 seconds to get the full data set. After that initial call, any subsequent calls usually only take ~ 1 second to return. This performance improvement remains for ~ 20 mins or so before it takes 14 seconds again. The interesting part with this is that, if the stored procedure is executed directly on the iSeries Navigator, it always returns within milliseconds (no change in response time). I wonder if it is a caching / execution plan issue but I can only apply my SQL SERVER logic to the AS400, which is not always a match. Any suggestions on what I can do to recieve a more consistant response time or simply insight as to why the AS400 is acting in this manner when I was using the iSeries Data Provider for .Net? Is there a better access method that I should use? • [SOLVED] BitmapFactory.decodeStream returning null when options are set.

  Hi! I'm having issues with BitmapFactory.decodeStream(inputStream). When using it without options, it will return an image. But when I use it with options as in .decodeStream(inputStream, null, options) it never returns Bitmaps. What I'm trying to do is to downsample a Bitmap before I actually load it to save memory. I've read some good guides, but none using .decodeStream. • Making Infragistics ultrawingrid, desired columns readonly

  I am stucked at the situation where I need to disable few columns of a each row ,except newly added row. That is I have 10 columns in grid and I want first three columns that are binded from the rows coming from db as disabled or read-only, rest are editable. if I add new row then all columns of new row must be enabled until and unless it is saved. I dont have any DataKey or Primary key for my existing row or new row. • Boosting my GA with Neural Networks and/or Reinforcement Learning

  As I have mentioned in previous questions I am writing a maze solving application to help me learn about more theoretical CS subjects, after some trouble I've got a Genetic Algorithm working that can evolve a set of rules (handled by boolean values) in order to find a good solution through a maze. That being said, the GA alone is okay, but I'd like to beef it up with a Neural Network, even though I have no real working knowledge of Neural Networks (no formal theoretical CS education). After doing a bit of reading on the subject I found that a Neural Network could be used to train a genome in order to improve results. Let's say I have a genome (group of genes), such as 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 1 0 0... How could I use a Neural Network (I'm assuming MLP?) to train and improve my genome? In addition to this as I know nothing about Neural Networks I've been looking into implementing some form of Reinforcement Learning, using my maze matrix (2 dimensional array), although I'm a bit stuck on what the following algorithm wants from me: (from http://people.revoledu.com/kardi/tutorial/ReinforcementLearning/Q-Learning-Algorithm.htm) 1. Set parameter , and environment reward matrix R 2. Initialize matrix Q as zero matrix 3. For each episode: * Select random initial state * Do while not reach goal state o Select one among all possible actions for the current state o Using this possible action, consider to go to the next state o Get maximum Q value of this next state based on all possible actions o Compute o Set the next state as the current state End Do End For The big problem for me is implementing a reward matrix R and what a Q matrix exactly is, and getting the Q value. I use a multi-dimensional array for my maze and enum states for every move. How would this be used in a Q-Learning algorithm? If someone could help out by explaining what I would need to do to implement the following, preferably in Java although C# would be nice too, possibly with some source code examples it'd be appreciated.

• Pass object to dynamically loaded ListView ItemTemplate

  I have been following the following post on using multiple ItemTemplates in a ListView control. While following this example does produce output, I am trying ot figure out how to psas an object through to the ItemTemplate's user control, which I do not seem to be able to do/figure out. protected void lvwComments_OnItemCreated(object sender, ListViewItemEventArgs e) { ListViewDataItem currentItem = (e.Item as ListViewDataItem); Comment comment = (Comment)currentItem.DataItem; if (comment == null) return; string controlPath = string.Empty; switch (comment.Type) { case CommentType.User: controlPath = "~/layouts/controls/General Comment.ascx"; break; case CommentType.Official: controlPath = "~/layouts/controls/Official Comment.ascx"; break; } lvwComments.ItemTemplate = LoadTemplate(Controlpath); } The User Control is as follows: public partial class OfficialComment : UserControl { protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { } } In the example, the values are being output in the ascx page: <%# Eval("ItemName") %> however I need to access the ListItem in this control to do other logic. I cannot figure out how I to send through my Comment item. The sender object and EventArgs do not contain the info.

The test methods have a DeploymentItem attribute, specifying a text file which is parsed by the business logic method that is being tested and a 2nd DeploymentItem where just a path has been specified containing a bunch of TIF files that have to be deployed too. [TestMethod()] [DeploymentItem(@"files\valid\valid_entries.txt")] [DeploymentItem(@"files\tif\")] public void ExistsTifTest() { ... } The tests worked before, but now I had to change the names of the TIF files contained in the \files\tif directory. According to a rule, the TIF filenames have to match a certain pattern which is also checked by the ExistsTifTest() method. Now I had to change the filenames in order to adapt them to the new requirements and suddently the TIF files are no more being deployed as before. Can someone give me a hint why this happens or what may be the cause? The same thing happens also if I add a new text-file say "my2ndTest.txt" beside the "valid_entries.txt" in the \files\valid\ directory with the according DeploymentItem attribute on the test method. The file doesn't get deployed? I got the images now deployed by defining the deployment path directly in the testrunconfig, but I'd like to understand why these things happen or why for instance my new file "my2ndTest.txt" doesn't get deployed while the others do.   Alright, I'm trying to query a sqlite database. I was trying to be good and use the query method of SQLiteDatabase and pass in the values in the selectArgs parameter to ensure everything got properly escaped, but it wouldn't work. I never got any rows returned (no errors, either). I started getting curious about the SQL that this generated so I did some more poking around and found SQLiteQueryBuilder (and apparently Stack Overflow doesn't handle links with parentheses in them well, so I can't link to the anchor for the buildQuery method), which I assume uses the same logic to generate the SQL statement. I did this: SQLiteQueryBuilder builder = new SQLiteQueryBuilder(); builder.setTables(BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TABLE_NAME); String sql = builder.buildQuery(new String[] { BarcodeDb.Barcodes.ID, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TIMESTAMP, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TYPE, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.VALUE }, "? = '?' • MVP, WinForms - how to avoid bloated view, presenter and presentation model

  When implementing MVP pattern in winforms I often find bloated view interfaces with too many properties, setters and getters. An easy example with be a view with 3 buttons and 7 textboxes, all having value, enabled and visible properties exposed from the view. Adding validation results for this, and you could easily end up with an interface with 40ish properties. Using the Presentation Model, there'll be a model with the same number of properties aswell. How do you easily sync the view and the presentation model without having bloated presenter logic that pass all the values back and forth? (With that 80ish line presenter code, imagine with the presenter test that mocks the model and view will look like..160ish lines of code just to mock that transfer.) Is there any framework to handle this without resorting to winforms databinding? (you might want to use different views than a winforms view. According to some, this sync should be the presenters job..) Would you use AutoMapper? Maybe im asking the wrong questions, but it seems to me MVP easily gets bloated without some good solution here..

  Is there any way to indicate to ReSharper that a null reference won't occur because of Design-by-Contract Requires checking? For example, the following code will raise the warning (Possible 'null' assignment to entity marked with 'NotNull' attribute) in ReSharper on lines 7 and 8: private Dictionary<string, string> _Lookup = new Dictionary<string, string>(); public void Foo(string s) { Contract.Requires(!String.IsNullOrEmpty(s)); if (_Lookup.ContainsKey(s)) _Lookup.Remove(s); } What is really odd is that if you remove the Contract.Requires(...) line, the ReSharper message goes away. Update I found the solution through ExternalAnnotations which was also mentioned by Mike below. Here's an example of how to do it for a function in Microsoft.Contracts: Create a directory called Microsoft.Contracts under the ExternalAnnotations ReSharper directory. • controller path not found for static images? asp.net mvc routing issue?

  I have an image folder stored at ~/Content/Images/ I am loading these images via <img src="/Content/Images/Image.png" /> Recently, the images aren't loading and I am getting the following errors in my error log. What's weird is that some images load fine, while others do not load. Anyone have any idea what is wrong with my routes? Am I missing an ignore route for the /Content/ folder?   Problem VS2010 and TFS2010 support creating so-called Coded UI Tests. All the demos I have found, start with the WPF application already running in the background when the Coded UI Test begins or the EXE is started using the absolute path to it. I, however, would like to start my WPF application under test from the unit test code. That way it'll also work on the build server and on my peer's working copies. How do I accomplish that? My discoveries so far a) This post shows how to start a XAML window. But that's not what I want. I want to start the App.xaml because it contains XAML resources and there is application logic in the code behind file. b) The second screenshot on this post shows a line starting with ApplicationUnterTest calculatorWindow = ApplicationUnderTest.Launch(...); which is conceptually pretty much what I am looking for, except that again this example uses an absolute path the the executable file. c) A Google search for "Programmatically start WPF" didn't help either.

• Cannot connect to a SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services cube after installing SQL Server 2008 SP1.

  I've been developing an application that talks directly to an SSAS 2005 OLAP cube. Note that I also have SQL Server 2008 installed, so the other day I did a Windows Update and decided to include SQL Server 2008 SP1 in my update. After doing that, my SSAS 2005 cube is no longer accessible from my application. I'm able to browse the data just fine within SQL Server 2005 BI Studio Manager, but I'm not able to connect to the cube from my application. Now, the problem is that when I set paint style to be FILL or FILL_AND_STROKE nothing shows up on the screen, but when I set it to be just stroke, and set stroke width, it acctually draws what it is supposed to draw. Now, I looked for solution, but nothing comes up. Can you tell me if I something missed to set in the code itself, or are there some sorts of constraints when drawing on Overlay canvases? Thanks
