• SSIS Send Mail Task and ForceExecutionValue Error

  I tried to use the "ForcedExecutionValue" on several Send Mail Tasks and log the execution into a ExecValueVariable so that at the end of the package I can log into a table to say whether the data check is successful or not (by determine whether an email was sent out) I set up a Boolean variable that is accessible at the package level, then set up my Send Mail Task as the screenshot below with Boolean as my ForcedExecutionValueType.  When I run the package, I got the error described below. Just to make sure this is not another issue of SSIS having with Boolean type ( you also can't set variable value from xp_cmdshell of type Boolean), I used variables of types String, Int32, DateTime with the corresponding ForcedExecutionValueType.  The only way to get around this error, was to set my variable to type Object, but then when you try to get the value out later, the Object is null. I didn't spend enough time on this to see whether it's really a bug in SSIS or not, or is this just how Send Mail Task works.  Just want to log the error and will circle back on this later to narrow down the issue some more.  In the meantime, please share if you have run into the same problem.  The current workaround is to attach a script task at the end. Also, need to note 2 existing limitation: Data check needs to be done serially because every check needs to be inner join to a master table.  The master table has all the data in a single XML column and hence need to be retrieved with XQuery (a fundamental design flaw that needs to be changed) The next iteration will be to change this design into a FOR loop and pull out the checking query from a table somewhere with all the info needed for email task, but is being put to the back of the priority. Error Message: Error: 0xC001F009 at CountCheckBetweenODSAndCleanSchema: The type of the value being assigned to variable "User::WasErrorEmailEverSent" differs from the current variable type. Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object. • How to configure chrome to open magnet url's with deluge?

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) from 10.10, I can no longer open magnet (torrent) links in Chromium, and set deluge to automatically open and accept the url. (Edit: currently ".torrent" files are not a problem, but magnet url's, e.g. of the form "magnet:?xt=urn:...", are now the only problem. Not sure if something updated...?) Rather, now only transmission will automatically open torrents, magnet links, etc. There doesn't seem to be a way to set deluge to be the default torrent client. (And, there also doesn't seem to be a "default application" setting for bittorrent client to replace transmission w/ deluge.) Notes: I found some old threads on this issue, and only a one or two newer ones. The newer threads seem to suggest xdg-open is to blame. But not many people seem to be running into this problem, so... maybe it's just me? Not using firefox, so manually setting apps for mime-types or extensions doesn't work (that's not an option in chrome/chromium, afaik -- you have to rely on the OS) I uninstalled transmission, and then basically nothing happened when clicking on torrent/magnet links. running from the shell also opens transmission (not deluge): xdg-open "magnet:?xt=urn:bt..&tr=http://tracker.....com/announce" My current url handlers are: $ gconftool -a /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/magnet command = deluge "%s" needs_terminal = false enabled = true The only work-around I have (which does work) is to rename /usr/bin/transmission-gtk{,.bak} and create my own /usr/bin/transmission-gtk : $ cat /usr/bin/transmission-gtk #!/bin/bash deluge "$@" Anyone else run into this, know of a bug, workaround, or...?

• Why would accessing photos over a network be a problem for Digikam?

  Digikam has always worked nicely for me. I recently setup a Synology DiskStation (DS212+) and moved all my pictures to it, keeping them in an encrypted folder. I mount that folder using cifs, as some bug prevents eCryptfs and NFS from working together. This has led Digikam to being incredibly slow. Startup takes a very long time (several minutes for 41779 items, 123.8GB) but worse is how long it takes Digikam to write files. I like using Digikams import feature to copy new images from my camera to the hard drive because it checks for duplicates as well as creating a clear folder structure according to the dates the images were taken. Since I moved to using the network drive Digikam takes about 5 to 10 times as long to import photos than it did before. Saving modified or converted images takes equally long. What I am looking for is a way to help Digikam speed things up or an alternative piece of software (I have never liked Digikam being so very much KDEish…). There are just so many features that only Digikam seems to combine, e.g.: Batch processing. Respects existing folder structure. Does not mess up files for other applications. *.NEF support. Caches thumbnails in a clean way.

• Office design and layout for agile development

  (moved from stackoverflow) I have found lot of discussions here on about which keyboard, desk, light or colored background is best - but I can't find one addressing the layout of the whole office. We are a company with about 20 employees moving to a new place, something larger. There are two main development practices going on here with regular combination, the back end people often needing to work with the mobile people to arrange web services. There are about twice as many back end people as mobile people. About half of the back end developers are working on-site at any time and while they are almost never all in the office at once at least 5-10 spaces need to be provided - so most of the time the two groups are about equal. We have the chance to arrange desks, partitions and possibly even walls to make the space good. There won't be cash for dot-com frills like catering or massages but now's the time to be planning to avoid ending up with a bunch of desks in a long line. Joel on Software's Bionic Office is an article I've remembered from way back and it has some good ideas but I* (and more importantly the company's owners) are not completely sold on the privacy idea in an environment where we are supposed to be collaborating. This is another great link - The Ultimate Software Development Office Layout - I hadn't even remembered enclosed meeting rooms until reading this. Does the private office stand in the way of agile development? Is the scrum enough forced contact and if you need to bug someone you should need to get up and knock on their door? What design layouts can you point to and why would you recommend them? *I'm not against closed offices at all but would be happy if some other solution can do just as well. If it can't... well, that's what this question is all about.

This is supposed to happen in quick turnaround chunks of time such as "Sprints" in the Scrum process. A common part of Agile is also TDD, which states that tests are done first. My team works on a GUI program that does a lot of specific drawing and such. In order to provide tests, the testing team needs to be able to work with something that at least attempts to perform the things they are trying to test. We've found no way around this problem. I can very much see where they are coming from because if I was trying to write software that targeted some basically mysterious interface I'd have a very hard time. Although we have behavior fairly well specified, the exact process of interacting with various UI elements when it comes to automation seems to be too unique to a feature to allow testers to write automated scripts to drive something that does not exist. Even if we could, a lot of things end up turning up later as having been missing from the specification. One thing we considered doing was having the testers write test "scripts" that are more like a set of steps that must be performed, as described from a use-case perspective, so that they can be "automated" by a human being. This can then be performed by the developer(s) writing the feature and/or verified by someone else. When the testers later get an opportunity they automate the "script" for regression purposes mainly. This didn't end up catching on in the team though. The testing part of the team is actually falling behind us by quite a margin. This is one reason why the apparently extra time of developing a "script" for a human being to perform just did not happen....they're under a crunch to keep up with us developers. If we waited for them, we'd get nothing done. It's not their fault really, they're a bottle neck but they're doing what they should be and working as fast as possible. The process itself seems to be set up against them. Very often we end up having to go back a month or more in what we've done to fix bugs that the testers have finally gotten to checking. It's an ugly truth that I'd like to do something about. So what do other teams do to solve this fail cascade? How can we get testers ahead of us and how can we make it so that there's actually time for them to write tests for the features we do in a sprint without making us sit and twiddle our thumbs in the meantime? As it's currently going, in order to get a feature "done", using agile definitions, would be to have developers work for 1 week, then testers work the second week, and developers hopefully being able to fix all the bugs they come up with in the last couple days. That's just not going to happen, even if I agreed it was a reasonable solution. I need better ideas...

• Sprites rendering blurry with velocity

  After adding velocity to my game, I feel like my textures are twitching. I thought it was just my eyes, until I finally captured it in a screenshot: The one on the left is what renders in my game; the one on the right is the original sprite, pasted over. (This is a screenshot from Photoshop, zoomed in 6x.) Notice the edges are aliasing -- it looks almost like sub-pixel rendering. In fact, if I had not forced my sprites (which have position and velocity as ints) to draw using integer values, I would swear that MonoGame is drawing with floating point values. But it isn't. What could be the cause of these things appearing blurry? It doesn't happen without velocity applied. To be precise, my SpriteComponent class has a Vector2 Position field. When I call Draw, I essentially use new Vector2((int)Math.Round(this.Position.X), (int)Math.Round(this.Position.Y)) for the position. I had a bug before where even stationary objects would jitter -- that was due to me using the straight Position vector and not rounding the values to ints. If I use Floor/Ceiling instead of round, the sprite sinks/hovers (one pixel difference either way) but still draws blurry.

  Hi guys so I am working at this company as a web developer but after 1 week of working here, I realize the stuff I am doing seem to be very easy stuff compared to what my peers who have been around for longer are doing. I am way ahead of my schedule and finish my projects early but it's because the work is not at all hard or problem solving involved. So I am puzzled why I would be thanked over doing such menial tasks. Is this normal? This is driving me nuts, I ask to be given more work and I do get it and still finish it quickly and accurately. Now I am having this paranoia that they are just conspiring to use me for a short period of time and terminate me. Am I going too far with this? I keep losing sleep over this. On days when I have a full load of work to complete, this uneasiness goes away but so far I feel like I am not being allowed to pursue what I thought I would do like solving and designing solutions. A lot of it doesn't require any thinking, just cleaning up other people's code and closing bug tickets.

• Will BIOS boot mode Ubuntu install be able to boot when firmware "Fast Boot" is "Ultra Fast"?

  I have an AsRock mainboard with UEFI BIOS P1.50 02/14/2014. The firmware "Fast Boot" option is set to "Fast", Boot Option #1 is set to "AHCI P4: OCZ-VERT...": this is BIOS not UEFI boot. This boot disk has an MBR partitioning scheme (# parted -l | grep Partition\ Table:). Therefore Ubuntu 14.04 is installed in BIOS/CMS (Grub-PC) mode. The Ubuntu boot process ends in a text console (no GUI). There is no external graphics card in use. The stock Ubuntu kernel is replaced with Ubuntu supplied mainline 3.16.0-031600rc6-generic. dmesg outputs lines containing BIOS, like: SMBIOS 2.7 present Calgary: detecting Calgary via BIOS EBDA area Calgary: Unable to locate Rio Grande table in EBDA - bailing! [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found The ASRock BIOS it selves display this help text for "Ultra Fast - Fast Boot": Ultra Fast mode is only supported by Windows 8 and the VBIOS must support UEFI GOP if you are using an external graphics card. Please notice that Ultra Fast mode will boot so fast that the only way to enter this UEFI Setup Utility is to Clear CMOS or run the Restart to UEFI utility in Windows. Assumptions: I suspect after changing UEFI setting "Fast Boot" to "Ultra Fast" that the machine will no longer boot into Ubuntu's console. I expect when first exchanging "Grub-pc" with "Grub-efi", that the machine will still be able to boot to a grub menu (thus allowing to change the "Fast Boot" setting back to "Fast" without clearing CMOS). Are these two "Fast Boot" assumptions correct, and/or, may I expect Ubuntu 14.04 running mainline kernel 3.16rc6 and Grub-efi to still boot to console after enabling UEFI Ultra Fast Boot?

• Why don't we just fix Javascript?

  Javascript sucks because of a few fatalities well pointed out by Douglas Crockford. We talk a lot about it. But the point here is, why we don't fix it? Coffeescript of course does that and a lot more. But the question here is another: if we provide a webservice that can convert one version of Javascript to the next, and so on, we can keep the language up to date. Such a conversion allows old code to run, albeit with an ever-increasing startup delay, as newer browsers convert old code to the new syntax. To avoid that delay, the site only needs to take the output of the code-transform and paste it in! The effort has immediate benefits for those businesses interested in the results. The rest can sleep tight: their code will continue to run. If we provide backward code-transformation also, then elder browsers can also run ANY new code! Migration scripts should be created by those that make changes to a language. Today they don't, which is in itself a fundamental omission! It should be am obvious part of their job to provide them, as their job isn't really done without them. The onus of making it work should be on them. With this system Any site will be able to run in Any browser, but new code will run best on the newest browsers. This way we reap the benefit of an up-to-date and productive development environment, where today we suffer, supposedly because of yesterday. This is a misconception. We are all trapped in committee-thinking, and we drag along things that only worsen our performance over time! We cause an ever increasing complexity that is hard to underestimate. Javascript is easily fixed. The fact is we don't. As an example, I have seen Patrick Michaud tackle the migration problem in PmWiki. It included forward migration scripts. Whenever syntax changes were made, a migration script was added to transform pages to the new syntax. As far as I know, ALL migrations have worked flawlessly. In other words, we don't tackle the migration problem, we just drag it along. We are incompetent! And why is that? Because technically incompetent people feel they must decide for us. Because they are incompetent, fear rules them. They are obnoxiously conservative, and we suffer the consequence of bad leadership. But the competent don't need to play by the same rules. They can (and must) change them. They are the path forward. It is about time to leave the past behind, and pursue the leanest meanest, no, eternal functionality. That would in and of itself revolutionize programming. So, why don't we stop whining and fix programming? Begin with Javascript and change the world. Even if the browser doesn't hook into this system, coders could. So language updaters should take it upon them to provide migration scripts. Once they exist, browsers may take advantage of them.

• Ubuntu keyboard shortcuts - two-part question

  Background: I come from a Windows background and just started dual-booting Ubuntu (my first Linux experience) about 4 days ago. So my systems are Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04, and so far I'm loving Ubuntu. I am a dedicated mouse-abolitionist (trackpads are hell) and do most of my browsing and navigation with keyboard shortcuts. However, on switching to Ubuntu, a lot of my keyboard shortcuts are gone, and my productivity has resultantly taken a huge hit anytime I am using Ubuntu. Problem 1: My computer was designed to display on-screen notifications for a second when I hit caps-lock or num-lock, and there are no constant indicators of the lock status (LEDs, etc). In Ubuntu, the keys still worked, but the notifications were gone. On my keyboard, I can enter pgUp and pgDwn by either disabling NumLock and hitting 9 or 3 respectively on the 10key. Alternately I can hold the fn key and hit up or down arrow. The first method is the one I very heavily relied upon, and it works in Firefox for Ubuntu, but not in Chrome nor in Chromium. The second method (ctrl + fn + up/down) works fine in Chrome. However, I'd dearly like to find a method to make the first method work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help. Update: @julien: I've checked the keyboard layout options - I didn't find anything that seemed useful for this goal. @Marty: The script runs once when the button is pressed. In Compiz, I've tied those two keys to the script, so when I press the button, it runs the script with the button pressed as a parameter. Update: @elmicha: Thanks. That one works a lot better, and it even pops an icon into the status bar when caps lock is on. There's still a very slight problem in that if I quickly tap the key twice, the image will show that it has been turned on and then turned off, and the notifaction will come and go from my status area, but the text of both notifications will be "Caps Lock on". Same with Num Lock. However, if the time between presses is long enough for the first notification to disappear, everything displays correctly. Given how quickly the notifications disappear, I don't expect this will pose too much of a problem for me.

  I'm working with some code which was written by a contractor who left a year ago leaving a number of projects with buggy, disgustingly bad code. This is what I call cowboy PHP, say no more. Ideally I'd like to leave the project as is and never touch it again. Things break, requirements change and it needs to be maintained. Part A needs to be changed. There is a bug I cannot reproduce. Part A is connect to parts B D and E. This kind of work gives me a headache and makes me die a little inside. It kills my motivation and productivity. To be honest I'd say it's affecting my mental health. Perhaps being at the start of my career I'm being naive to think production code should be reasonably clean. I would like to hear from anyone else who has been in this situation before. What did you do to get out of it? I'm thinking long term I might have to find another job. Edit I've moved on from this company now, to a place where idiots are not employed. The code isn't perfect but it's at least manageable and peer reviewed. There are a lot of people in the comments below telling me that software is messy like this. Sure I don't agree with the way some programmers do things but this code was seriously mangled. The guy who wrote it tried to reinvent every wheel he could, and badly. He stopped getting work from us because of his bad code that nobody on the team could stand. If it were easy to refactor I would have. Eventually after many 'just do this small 10minute change' situations had ballooned into hours of lost time (regardless of who on the team was doing the work) my boss finally caved in it was rewritten.

  The Dynamic Tab Shell template does expose a method on the Tab.java class that allows you to get access to the ADF binding container for a tab. At least in theory this works, because in practice this call always returns a null value (a bug is filed for this). To work around the problem, you can use code similar to the following to get the ADF binding for a specific tab DCBindingContainer currentBinding = (DCBindingContainer) BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry(); DCBindingContainer templateBinding = (DCBindingContainer)currentBinding.get("ptb1"); DCBindingContainer tabBinding= (DCBindingContainer)templateBinding.get("r"+0);  In the code line above, the tabBinding variable will hold the binding reference to the first tab in the dynamic tab shell template. Note that the tab doesn't need to be visible for this (which has to do with how the template works).  "ptb1" is the template reference name in the PageDef file (Executable section) of the template consumer view. Check this string in your page before using this code. If it differs, change it also in the code above. "r0" is the binding reference of the first tab in the template. • Simple collision detection for pong

  I'm making a simple pong game, and things are great so far, but I have an odd bug which causes my ball (well, it's a box really) to get stuck on occasion when detecting collision against the ceiling or floor. It looks as though it is trying to update too frequently to get out of the collision check. Basically the box slides against the top or bottom of the screen from one paddle to the other, and quickly bounces on and off the wall while doing so, but only bounces a few pixels from the wall. What can I do to avoid this problem? It seems to occur at random. • Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 Instal Nvidia drivers

  I have been looking all over the web, and tried every suggestion I found to get the nvidia drivers working on my computer with Ubuntu Gnome 14.04, with no luck. Every time I install a driver or choose to use the driver from addition drivers, when I reebot, I cannot log in again. It gets stuck at the logo screen. I need to go to the ALT + CTRL + F1 to purge all nvidia traces so I can get back. Is it possible to install the new nvidia drivers? I just upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04, I have an Asus N550VJ which has hybrid graphics with Intel 4000 / Nvidia 750M What Im looking for is to try the primus functionality to disable the discreet card and enable it whenever I want to play or run heavy graphic stuff. When I was in 13.10 I was using bumblebee, but, since, the nvidia prime is supposedly mature enough, I wanted to try it. Is this possible for Ubuntu Gnome 14.04. I read there was a bug with gdm, but also, saw that it was already fixed. Thank you very much for your help. Im not that well versed in linux.

• Upgrading specific pieces of KDE 4.x

  So this is going to be one of those "is this even possible?" questions. I need to upgrade a piece of my KDE from 4.8.5 to 4.9. Specifically, I need to upgrade Gwenview from the 2.85 version in KDE 4.8.5 to 2.9 version in KDE 4.9. It seems trivial but it's actually a fairly big deal for me. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.04, and that upgraded my Gwenview to 2.8x. The issue is that the Gwenview 2.8 releases accidentally broke a feature that I rely upon very heavily. It's a known bug that was corrected in 2.9. Unfortunately, the only package available in Synaptic is 4.8.5, which contains Gwenview 2.85. To make matters worse I'm not sure that I can simply take my whole KDE to 4.9 as I am running an older Toshiba Satellite with the Intel 945GMA chipset that I was shocked managed to hold up under the weight of 12.04 as it is. Well, actually it didn't. I had to install Cairo Dock as Unity 2D was hopeless with this chipset. But anyway, I desperately need to get to Gwenview 2.9 without the potential system-wide implosion of upgrading KDE to 4.9. Possible?

The testers have the ability to auto-deploy integration to a staging environment and this occurs multiple times per week, enabling continual running of their test suites. Every Monday: there is a release planning meeting to determine which stories are "known good" (based on the testers' work), and hence will be in the release. If there is a known issue with a story, the source branch is pulled out of integration. no new code (only bug fixes requested by the testers) may be pulled into integration on this Monday to ensure the testers have a stable codebase to cut a release from. Every Tuesday: The testers have tested the integration branch as much as they possibly can have given the time available and there are no known bugs so a release is cut and pushed out to the production nodes slowly. This sounds OK in practise, but we have found that it is incredibly difficult to achieve. The team sees the following symptoms "subtle" bugs are found on production that were not identified on the staging environment. last minute hot-fixes continue into the Tuesday. problems on the production environment require roll-backs which blocks continued development until a successful live deployment is achieved and the master branch can be updated (and hence branched from). I think test coverage, code quality, ability to regression test quickly, last minute changes and environmental differences are at play here. Can anyone offer any advice regarding how best to achieve "continual" delivery?

• After upgrading to 13.10, biblatex and biber are not compiling my references

  I am working on a thesis using LaTeX, with my references relying on biblatex-apa. Ubuntu 13.04 provided all my LaTeX needs. But after upgrading to 13.10, the biblatex / biber combo will no longer compile my APA-style references. No other changes have been made to my documents or references -- and the rest of the document appears fine (albeit with broken references and no bibliography). I found reference to a possible cause -- which is that biblatex 1.7-1 is incompatible with texlive 2013 (as available through the 13.10 repositories) -- and that issue may be fixed by biblatex 2.7a-1 which has been committed upsteam in Debian. See: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718244 However, that doesn't help me much, as I need to compile my references quite soon. How can I get my references to compile in the meantime? Is there a patched biblatex or biber that I can manually slot in place? Is the upstream fix on its way? or do I need to go to TexLive and do a replacement install directly (which is not my preference). Thanks!
