• How to move from untyped DataSets to POCO\LINQ2SQL in legacy application

  Good day! I've a legacy application where data access layer consists of classes where queries are done using SqlConnection/SqlCommand and results are passed to upper layers wrapped in untyped DataSets/DataTable. Now I'm working on integrating this application into newer one where written in ASP.NET MVC 2 where LINQ2SQL is used for data access. I don't want to rewrite fancy logic of generating complex queries that are passed to SqlConnection/SqlCommand in LINQ2SQL (and don't have permission to do this), but I'd like to have result of these queries as strong-typed objects collection instead of untyped DataSets/DataTable. The basic idea is to wrap old data access code in a nice-looking from ASP.NET MVC "Model". What is the fast\easy way of doing this?

• Should I use the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) pattern in Silverlight projects?

  One challenge with Silverlight controls is that when properties are bound to code, they're no longer really editable in Blend. For example, if you've got a ListView that's populated from a data feed, there are no elements visible when you edit the control in Blend. I've heard that the MVVM pattern, originated by the WPF development community, can also help with keeping Silverlight controls "blendable".   I am writing a project where i need to implment a stripped down version of an ORM solution in c++. I am struck in implmenting 1-n relationships for the same. For instance, if following are the classes: class A { } class B { std::list _a_list; } I have provided load/save menthods for loading/saving to the db. Now, if i take the case of B : Say , for the following workflow : 1 entry from _a_list is removed 1 entry from _a_list is modified 1 entry is added to _a_list Now, i need to update the db using something like "b.save()". So, what would be the best way to save the changes,i.e, identify the additions, deletions and updations to _a_list.

• Deleting from arraylist and exporting back to .buab file(Java)

  Ive made an address book. I can currently write to the arraylist and save it back to the .buab file, but I cant delete from the arraylist and export it back to the .buab file? Im pretty much stuck on this. Im able to retrive contacts from the .buab and scroll through them using the JTextFields and buttons ive created. Any help will be dearly appreciated. Ive set up seprate classes for all operations (newcontacts, nextcontact etc). If you need the code posted let me know.. Cheers Dave

• ASP.net Literal or Page altering HTML string, causing formatting issues

  We have a service that generates a report (using word templates and a 3rd party library), and then returns a string in HTML. While this HTML isn't great - its formatted correctly in this string. We want this HTML to show up on a page - format intact. What we currently have done is set an ASP.net Literal's text element to this string. While this works, I have noticed that it has reformatted the HTML string slightly. For the most part, it looks like it generated a bunch of new CSS classes, and a new style element in the HTML. This HTML does not exist in the string thats being returned. I could filter all of this back out, but wonder if there is a better way. I assume that the Page itself is altering something. What is the best way to display this raw HTML back to the user? I can't directly use a Response.Write(string), because this page does have a few other controls on it.

• Mimic an HTTPRequest and HTTPResponse object in Java

  How do I mimic an HTTPServletRequest and HTTPServletResponse object. The reason is I want to test the behaviour of some servlets. I know JUnit probably provides this functionality but I don't know how to use it (I will learn soon) and need to do this reasonably quickly. HTTPServletRequest and HTTPServletResponse are both interfaces so they can't be instantiated. There is a HttpServletRequestWrapper which implements HttpServletRequest but it doesn't seem to have any setParameter() type methods and HttpServletResponse doesn't seem to have any implementing classes at all. How can I test my code by passing a suitable HttpServletRequest object and then checking that the received HttpServletResponse object matches what I expect?

• Strategy for developing namespaced and non-namespaced versions of same PHP code

  I'm maintaining library written for PHP 5.2 and I'd like to create PHP 5.3-namespaced version of it. However, I'd also keep non-namespaced version up to date until PHP 5.3 becomes so old, that even Debian stable ships it ;) I've got rather clean code, about 80 classes following Project_Directory_Filename naming scheme (I'd change them to \Project\Directory\Filename of course) and only few functions and constants (also prefixed with project name). Question is: what's the best way to develop namespaced and non-namespaced versions in parallel? Should I just create fork in repository and keep merging changes between branches? Are there cases where backslash-sprinkled code becomes hard to merge? Should I write script that converts 5.2 version to 5.3 or vice-versa? Should I use PHP tokenizer? sed? C preprocessor? Is there a better way to use namespaces where available and keep backwards compatibility with older PHP?

What I'd like to do is find all school classes belonging to a given student that meet on Monday. Now I suppose I could do something like: @student = Student.find(:student_id) @student_classes = @student.school_classes.find(:all) @student_classes_on_monday = Array.new @student_classes.each do |student_class| if student_class.day_of_week.include?("Monday") @student_classes_on_monday << student_class end end But there has to be a more elegant way. • Is there anything wrong with my Factory class?

For example, in one of my classes I have a method that instantiates a lot of objects using the method that uses the factory. I can use the method in that class by just throwing the exception, however it won't work if I try to pass a reference to that class to another class and then use the method from there. Then it forces me to try catch the exception. I probably don't need a factory but it seemed interesting and I'd like to try to use patterns. The reason I created the factory was that I have 6 subclasses of Piece and I wan't to use a method to instantiate them by passing the type of subclass I want as an argument to the method.

• Is there a lightweight multipart/form-data parser in C or C++?

  I'm looking at integrating multipart form-data parsing in a web server module so that I can relieve backend web applications (often written in dynamic languages) from parsing the multipart data themselves. The multipart grammar (RFC 2046) looks non-trivial and if I implement it by hand a lot of things can go wrong. Is there already a good, lightweight multipart/form-data parser written in C or C++? I'm looking for one with no external dependencies other than the C or C++ standard library. I don't need email attachment handling or buffered I/O classes or a portability runtime or whatever, just multipart/form-data parsing. Things that I've considered: GMime - depends on glib, so no go. libapreq - too large, depends on APR, badly documented, no unit tests. I've also looked at writing a parser with Ragel, but I can't figure out how to do it because the grammar is not static: the boundary can change arbitrarily.

• Code jumps out of a jar and runs? What is causing this?

  I am trying to get a sample program working with JUNG, a graphing tool in Java. I downloaded and referenced all the .jar files in eclipse so my project hierarchy looks like this: In Test.java I have the following code: public class Test { static public void main() { System.out.print("Hello"); }} For some reason though when I try to run it as a Java Application by right clicking on Jung test in the project hierarchy I am presented with a bunch of classes. My Test.java isn't on the list so if I just leave it as ** and press ok it starts running a program that is dynamically adding nodes and vertexes to a graph. I can't seem to figure out what code its actually executing. I know java but stuff like this with the jar files seems to be getting lost on me. Any ideas? Thanks

Regarding the multithreading, what should be used? The reactive extension seem to be a good choice. Has anyone tried this in a real world project? Are there better options? I had bad experiences with the .NET thread pool in the past.

• Migrating from Forms to WPF

  We're considering migrating a WinForms app to WPF, but are just starting on the WPF learning curve now that 4.0 is out. What I'd like to do is migrate our application commands (cut, copy, paste, etc) to a WPF-like command-binding system, while still running as a WinForms app - but in such a way as to make the migration easy when we go ahead with WPF. The ideal approach would be to implement our commands using the WPF command interfaces, classes and events directly, and simply hooking the WinForms events up to them with our own dispatcher. Has anyone tried something like this or know if it might be possible?

• How can I share Configuration Settings across multiple projects in Visual Studio?

  Ok I know this may be a design issue, so I would love to have remarks on that as well. I have a Visual Studio web application solution. I have three projects as UserInterface, BusinessLogic and DataAccess. I had to store some user defined settings and I created configSections in the config file. I access these configSections through classes which inherit from .NET's ConfigurationSection base class. So in short for every project I had a separate configSection and for that corresponding configSection I had a class in that project inheriting from ConfigurationSection to access the config section settings. This works all sweet. But the problem arises if there is any setting which I need to use across multiple projects. So If I need to use a setting defined in UserInterface project configSection in, let say, BusinessLogic project I have to actually make a copy of that setting in the BusinessLogic's configSection. This ends up having the same setting copied across multiple configSections. Isn't this a bit too redundant?

• R: ca plotting text attributes

  Does anyone know of a way to control the font size/color/weight of the row and column names when plotting a correspondence plot with the ca package? The following code will produce a very nice looking chart, though if there were more attributes (very heavy, super heavy, something more than super heavy) or more classes of workers (peons, underlings, etc) then the graph will get a little cluttered and hard to tell what was what.   Let's say I have to generate a bunch of result files, and I want to make it as fast as possible. Each result file is generated independently of any other result file; in fact, one could say that each result file is agnostic to every other result file. The resources used to generate each result file is also unique to each. How can I dynamically decide the optimal number of threads to run simultaneously in order to minimize the overall run time? Is my only option to write my own thread manager that watches performance counters and adjust accordingly or does there exists some solid classes that already accomplish this?

• How do I convert a windows forms app from C# to VB ?

  I've been converting all kinds of other things, classes, interfaces, ASP.NET MVC apps, and WPF applications, but I am stumped as to how to convert a windows forms application, as the whole structure seems to be different. Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this problem? I see essentially that you have two files, Form1.cs and Form1.Designer.cs. Literally translating them from C# to VB doesn't work because of some intricacies or other of how Visual Basic works. I think you /might/ be able to convert Form1.cs in this way, as it's just a constructor plus event handlers, but the designer contains the references to the controls etc. and I am not sure how to go about doing that. I am using Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2.

So suppose we have another class called ExampleManager. With example manager I want to use a generic type and consequently return that generic type. e.g. public class ExampleManager<T extends Example> { public T getExample() { return new T("example","example"); // So what exactly goes here? } } So where I am returning my generic type how do i get this to actually work correctly and cast Example as either classA or classB? • How do I draw a gradated boarder on a polygon using GDI+ via C#/WinForms?

  Hi, I have polygons of various shapes and sizes. They have a solid fill and currently a solid border. I would like to give the polygons a gradient on their edge to soften them. So far I've tried using a Pen with a LinearGradientBrush and whilst the effect it produces is very interesting it's most defintly not what I want ;) I've looked through the System.Drawing.Drawing2D namespace but there didnt seem to be any other classes that would be applicable for this purpose. I've had a search around and the articles that i can find are mostly about creating boarders for rectangles, which are mush easier, or are irrelivent. So to summerise, does anyone have a way of drawing a gradient boarder on a polygon using GDI+?

• Android Template Application?

  I have built an application that I want to use as the foundation for a few other variants. The variants will come from assets / resource files and a unique AndroidManifest.xml. However, I want to be able to leave all the application code alone (modifying the package of all my classes, etc). I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do so. My first thought was to simply have my main application in its own package, and then specify the specific application package in the manifest. However, this gives me issues with the generated R.java class, since it is generated to be in the main application's package. Anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish this? To have a code baseline, and the application variants happen in resources/assets and the manifest?
