  • Why is <my site url> not indexed by search engines? [closed]

    was indexed fine until about a year ago. The only thing I can think of is that search engines throw up at using h5 before h4, or that some person (fantasizing now) has reported my site as unsafe to every search engine. However, I'm not here to speculate. The site validates, and has an RSS feed on the front page, for Pat Morita's sake! To me, it looks like the kind of site search engines would feast on. It's got more than a dozen blogs on it, if nothing else. Hah. :) I was thinking you could identify basically what has changed in search engines (currently, google, yahoo, bing which used to work fine) the last year to make them not find news and blog articles on this site. The site was submitted to Google, oh, way back in 2006. With online crawler tests I get mixed results, some crawlers index fine, some go blank. I don't really know which ones are reliable and am looking to you guys for advice on that. Yes, I am prepared to again verify my site with Google and upload a sitemap, but that's not the topic here. I really would first like to know what change on the site last year could make search engines not index it. (Yees, the robots.txt is fine. Should be nothing to discourage bots there.) It's a very intriguing problem. One which I have yet to find the reason for but would like to know the reason for. Any and all input appreciated, but I would heavily enjoy pertinent advice the most. ;) Edit: Some google searches that don't show up include - aca630 All of which are posted in the news and blogs that are on the front page there. Now, these search terms are extremely specific as the term in is almost unique on the web and ACA630 is also a very qualified search term that can't be confused with mainstream search terms.

  • Cannot establish XMPP server-to-server connection with gmail

    My jabber-server fails to connect to gmail.com giving the error: outgoing s2s stream myserver.com.ua-bot.talk.google.com closed: undefined-condition (myserver.com.ua is a Google Apps Domain with Talk service enabled.) I am using the Prosody XMPP server. It works just fine with other jabber-servers I tested so far (e.g. jabber.ru). As for the Google services, I did have a google account where I added the domain name under question to the Webmasters tools page. However, I deleted my account long ago, so now it is unclear, how any of the Google services can relate to my domain name. So my question is: What is the real cause of this problem (my jabber-server configuration or imaginary Google account or something else) and how can I make my Prosody server connect to gmail.com jabber service?

    Very recently I have started to write python scripts that need to connect few databases on mySQL server. The problem is that when I work from office my script works fine but running a script from my home while on office VPN generates connection error. I also noticed the mySQL client Squirrel also cannot connect from my home but works fine on Office computer. I think both are giving problem for the same reason. Do I need to create a ssh tunnel and forward the port? If yes how do I do it? mySQL is installed on server I have ssh access. Please help me on this AK

  • IIS SMTP server (Installed on local server) in parallel to Google Apps

    I am currently using free version of Google Apps for hosting my email.It works great for my official mails my email on Google is [email protected]. In addition I'm sending out high volume mails (registrations, forgotten passwords, newsletters etc) from the website (www.mydomain.com) using IIS SMTP installed on my windows machine. These emails are sent from [email protected] My problem is that when I send email from the website using IIS SMTP to a mail address [email protected] I don’t receive the email to Google apps. (I only receive these emails if I install a pop service on the server with the [email protected] email box). It seems that the IIS SMTP is ignoring the domain MX records and just delivers these emails to my local server.     We have websites with multilingual content. e.g. http://www.example.com/about-us/ http://www.example.com/en-HK/about-us/ http://www.example.com/en-GB/about-us/ http://www.example.com/zn-CH/about-us/ We need to configure the hreflang tags in sitemap for Google to know that there are alternate links for the same pages in different languages. I know for the above example that my sitemap url tag would look like this: <url> <loc>http://www.example.com/about-us</loc> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="http://www.example.com/en-GB/about-us"/> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-HK" href="http://www.example.com/en-HK/about-us"/> <xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="zn-CH" href="http://www.example.com/zn-CH/about-us"/> <changefreq>daily</changefreq> <priority>0.8</priority> </url> However, if I don't have the main url but just the last three ones with en-HK, en-GB and zn-CH, then how should my url tag look? Should I just skip the loc tag and keep the three xhtml:link tags? Or can I specify any url in the loc tag and put the remaining two in xhtml:link tags? I am new to Google sitemaps.   • What Should I Do? [closed]

    What is a reasonable goal in terms of traffic for my Flex 3 site: www.brainpinata.com Since I began a couple of months ago, I've gotten roughly 5500 ad views and 280 ad clicks. And the ad revenue is a whopping $4.80. (I don't use Google Adsense). I advertise my site using Google Adwords to try to build traffic. My budget is $10/day. What should I do? a) Push the marketing. Add a blog. Try to get backlinks, contact blogs, start a Facebook page, tweet, etc. b) Google is only indexing the static content in the SWF. The questions/answers are pulled from a mySQL database. So, Google doesn't index 99% of the content. Should I re-do the site in HTML/Javascript and hard-code the questions for each puzzle? (This would be a challenge as I don't know javascript worth squat.) Or should I hard-code the questions in XML and put them in the Flex app? If I put the questions in an XML file it's roughly 500 KB. Other ideas? c) Should I switch ad networks? (I currently get about 100 visitors a day). My ad network pays so little that if I were to make even $500/month, I would need 550,000 ad views/month, which seems impossible. If I go ahead and switch ad networks, I need to find one that allows iFrames as I've got a Flex website. Which ad networks permit their ads to be shown in iFrames? d) Should I cut and run? Luckily it’s pretty easy to add your Google / Gmail contacts, but you’ll have to click the mouse a few times and maybe poke at the old keyboard once or twice to type in your email address and password. It’s worth noting that if you set up Gmail in the Mail app you shouldn’t have to do this. Since we prefer Gmail in a browser, that’s why we’re writing this. Or just because we’re procrastinating the book editing that we’re supposed to be doing. Don’t judge. Start by opening the Preferences for the Contacts app by heading up to the Menu bar. Go to Accounts and then click the + sign to add a new one. Choose CardDAV for the account type, use your Gmail username and password, and put google.com as the server address. If you are using two-factor authentication, you’ll need to create a specific password for this account.

    We would like to serve up seo-friendly ajax-driven content. We are following this documentation. Has anyone ever tried to write a 302 redirect into the htaccess file, that takes the '?_escaped_fragment=' string and send that to a static page? For example /snapshot/yourfilename/ How will Google react to this? I've gone through the documentation and it's not very clear. The below quote is from Google's documentation this is what I find. I'm not sure if they are saying that you can redirect the _escaped_fragment_ url to a different static page, or if this is to redirect the hashtag URL to static content? Thoughts? From Google's site: Question: Can I use redirects to point the crawler at my static content? Redirects are okay to use, as long as they eventually get you to a page that's equivalent to what the user would see on the #! version of the page. This may be more convenient for some webmasters than serving up the content directly. If you choose this approach, please keep the following in mind: Compared to serving the content directly, using redirects will result in extra traffic because the crawler has to follow redirects to get the content. This will result in a somewhat higher number of fetches/second in crawl activity. Note that if you use a permanent (301) redirect, the url shown in our search results will typically be the target of the redirect, whereas if a temporary (302) redirect is used, we'll typically show the #! url in search results. Depending on how your site is set up, showing #! may produce a better user experience, because the user will be taken straight into the AJAX experience from the Google search results page. Clicking on a static page will take them to the static content, and they may experience avoidable extra page load time if the site later wants to switch them to the AJAX experience.

  • Cropping images & SEO

    So I have a page with a bunch of images with largely varying sizes. Also the layout of the page is such that the images are all in the shape of square tiles, so just resizing will cause distorted images. What I've been doing previously is when users upload images, I resize and crop them appropriately and display the new image as the thumbnail and load full image when user clicks on it. However, I just realized this is an issue with SEO as google will crawl the thumbnails and stick the thumbnails on Google Images instead of the full images. Is there any way to show a cropped/resized image but have Google Image show the full image? I can do something with css using an enclosing div and overflow:hidden, but I'd imagine the performance on that would be pretty bad. Any suggestions? Thanks! PS. I saw this (Make google index the actual image not the thumbnail), but in my case I have users continuously uploading images, and the database of images is always changing and pretty big (thousands), so sitemap will be pretty unwieldy..

  • How can I use domain masking without having self referral in Google Analytics

    I have one old domain that points to a website's server's ip (let's call it www.oldsite.com). I have a new one, www.newsite.com, that is set up to be forwarded to a specific page on the website. Due to the way the host of newsite.com places the website in a frame, in Google Analystics, the newsite.com is listed as a source rather than the source they were at before hand, causing a self referral. A solution is to edit the code of the iframe as I looked up, but there's no way to really edit the host's masking source code of course. Another solution I did previously was have www.newsite.com point to the address that www.oldsite.come pointed to. It solved the analytics problems, but in exchange, the url masking no longer worked. In the address bar, it came up as www.oldsite.com. Is there a way to make me have url masking and be able to forward to agree with google analytics? The server of the website is hosted on a cloud server, if this is anymore information.

  • What norms/API for monitoring my servers?

    I have a dozen server applications installed on my customers intranets (they can send http requests over the internet but cannot be called from outside). They're written in various technologies, mainly java and Go. I want them to regularly push information about their state towards a central server which is visible on internet. Some of this information is generic (is it ON ?), some is specific (size of a cache in an application for example). The main goal is to be able to make a small web page on which I could instantly check the state of every servers. And maybe later add some kind of notification in case of problem. Obviously I can do this by writing a few dozen lines of code each side (or a little more if I put this data in a database) but in order to ease future evolution, it could be interesting to use some existing norms or libraries. So, what are the current opensource free and light solutions to do this, preferably with no central configuration when I add a server ? I'd prefer a norm over a library.

  • How do I find information on who links to my sites?

    I'm trying to figure out if there's a free way to get information on backlinks to my site. I've had webmaster tools and google analytics set up for years. But I can't find access to data about site backlinks in either toolset. Webmaster tools, under 'traffic'-'links to your site' gives me the same message for all of my sites: "No data available". I haven't been able to find anything in GA that gives any information on backlinks. I've heard of using "links:" as an operator in google search, but for each of my sites, this returns either zero or very few results in cases when I know I have many backlinks. Most of the links simple aren't shown. My thinking is that google maintains a graph of who links to my site, so I figured that they might let me see it. But I can't figure out how. I've found this tool on a spammy website: http://www.backlinkwatch.com. It offers more data than google on my backlines, and offers more results in exchange for a paid subscription. The data it offers for free looks good, but the results are limited and the site has popups and obnoxious ads. So, in short: how do I get data on who links to me? Is there a free way?

    I noticed that every developer implements a somewhat different flowchart for solving programming problems. By flowchart I mean a defined system of techniques that the developer goes through in a certain sequence, trying to solve the problem at hand. Some examples for techniques: Google "how to..." or "... tutorial". Search the java/msdn/apple/etc API doc for the specific class or method. Search in stack overflow the exact problem with some tags like [iphone]/[java] etc. Take a nap and let the subconscious work. Debug. Draw the algorithm or system. Google the logged error message. Ask a colleague or manager. Ask a new question in stack overflow. From your experience, what is the best flowchart for solving a programming problem?

  • Inexplicable low ranking [closed]

    I have created two similar websites relating to monetary systems. So far, one appears to be loved by Google and the other hated. I'm struggling to work out why. The successful one is fullreservebanking.com. If you type in "full reserve banking" into Google, my site appears 2nd in the list behind Wikipedia. The unsuccessful one is fractionalreserves.com. If you type in "fractional reserve banking" into Google, it's nowhere to be seen. This is a mystery to me because both sites were created by me with the same design philosophy, both in pure html. Both are packed to the rafters with references to, and information about, their respective subjects. One issue I'm worried may be the cause is to do with the location of the sites. I got a web hosting package from hostmonster.com for fullreservebanking, but fractionalreserves is just an "add-on" which sits on a subdirectory of fullreservebanking. I wonder if Google somehow detects this and treats it as a less significant website?
