• Adding NavigationControl to a TabBar Application containing UITableViews

  Hi, I'm new to iPhone dev and wanted to get advice on the general design pattern / guide for putting a certain kind of app together. I'm trying to build a TabBar type application. One of the tabs needs to display a TableView and selecting a cell from within the table view will do something else - maybe show another table view or a web page. I need a Navigation Bar to be able to take me back from the table view/web page. The approach I've taken so far is to: Create an app based around UITabBarController as the rootcontroller i.e. @interface MyAppDelegate : NSObject <UIApplicationDelegate> { IBOutlet UIWindow *window; IBOutlet UITabBarController *rootController; } Create a load of UIViewController derived classes and associated NIBs and wire everything up in IB so when I run the app I get the basic tabs working.   Hello, I have designed a trading application that handles customers stocks investment portfolio. I am using two datastore kinds: Stocks - Contains unique stock name and its daily percent change. In the dashboard, I see that the task.py takes around 65% of the CPU (Stock.py takes around 20%-30%) and I am using almost all of the 6.5 free CPU hours given to me by app engine. I have no problem to enable billing and pay for additional CPU, but the problem is the scaling of the system… Using 6.5 CPU hours for 100 stocks is very poor. I was wondering, given the requirements of the system as mentioned above, if there is a better and more efficient implementation (or just a small change that can help with the current implemntation) than the one presented here. • Smoke testing a .NET web application

  I cannot believe I'm the first person to go through this thought process, so I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with it. Current situation: developers write a web site, operations deploy it. Once deployed, a developer Smoke Tests it, to make sure the deployment went smoothly. To me this feels wrong, it essentially means it takes two people to deploy an application; in our case those two people are on opposite sides of the planet and timezones come into play, causing havoc. But the fact remains that developers know what the minimum set of tests is and that may change over time (particularly for the web service portion of our app). Operations, with all due respect to them (and they would say this themselves), are button-pushers who need a set of instructions to follow. The manual solution is that we document the test cases and operations follow that document each time they deploy. That sounds painful, plus they may be deploying different versions to different environments (specifically UAT and Production) and may need a different set of instructions for each. On top of this, one of our near-future plans is to have an automated daily deploy environment, so then we'll have to instruct a computer as to how to deploy a given version of our app. I would dearly like to add to that instructions for how to smoke test the app. Now developers are better at documenting instructions for computers than they are for people, so the obvious solution seems to be to use a combination of nUnit (I know these aren't unit tests per se, but it is a built-for-purpose test runner) and either the Watin or Selenium APIs to run through the obvious browser steps and call to the web service and explain to the Operations guys how to run those unit tests. I can do that; I have mostly done it already. But wouldn't it be nice if I could make that process simpler still? At this point, the Operations guys and the computer are going to have to know which set of tests relate to which version of the app and tell the nUnit runner which base URL it should point to (say, www.example.com = v3.2 or test.example.com = v3.3). Wouldn't it be nicer if the test runner itself had a way of giving it a base URL and letting it download say a zip file, unpack it and edit a configuration file automatically before running any test fixtures it found in there? Is there an open source app that would do that? Is there a need for one? Is there a solution using something other than nUnit, maybe Fitnesse? For the record, I'm looking at .NET-based tools first because most of the developers are primarily .NET developers, but we're not married to it. If such a tool exists using other languages to write the tests, we'll happily adapt, as long as there is a test runner that works on Windows.

• Techniques for querying a set of object in-memory in a Java application

  Hi All, We have a system which performs a 'coarse search' by invoking an interface on another system which returns a set of Java objects. Once we have received the search results I need to be able to further filter the resulting Java objects based on certain criteria describing the state of the attributes (e.g. from the initial objects return all objects where x.y z && a.b == c). The criteria used to filter the set of objects each time is partially user configurable, by this I mean that users will be able to select the values and ranges to match on but the attributes they can pick from will be a fixed set. The data sets are likely to contain <= 10,000 objects for each search. The search will be executed manually by the application user base probably no more than 2000 times a day (approx). It's probably worth mentioning that all the objects in the result set are known domain object classes which have Hibernate and JPA annotations describing their structure and relationship. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 ways of doing this: For each search persist the initial result set objects in our database, then use Hibernate to re-query them using the finer grained criteria. Use an in-memory Database (such as hsqldb?) to query and refine the initial result set. Write some custom code which iterates the initial result set and pulls out the desired records. Option 1 seems to involve a lot of toing and froing across a network to a physical Database (Oracle 10g) which might result in a lot of network and disk activity. It would also require the results from each search to be isolated from other result sets to ensure that different searches don't interfere with each other. Option 2 seems like a good idea in principle as it would allow me to do the finer query in memory and would not require the persistence of result data which would only be discarded after the search was complete. Gut feeling is that this could be pretty performant too but might result in larger memory overheads (which is fine as we can be pretty flexible on the amount of memory our JVM gets). Option 3 could be very performant but is something I would like to avoid as any code we write would require such careful testing that the time taken to acheive something flexible and robust enough would probably be prohibitive. I don't have time to prototype all 3 ideas so I am looking for comments people may have on the 3 options above, plus any further ideas I have not considered, to help me decide which idea might be most suitable. I'm currently leaning toward option 2 (in memory database) so would be keen to hear from people with experience of querying POJOs in memory too. I'm now trying to create an installer for this app so that: 1) The application will be placed in the applications folder 2) The application is added to the list of permissible apps in Mac Application Level Firewall Also, I have several example files I would like to include with this application - what is the best way to make these available to the user. • How can I trap errors for an application that is tightly coupled with IIS?

  We have an unsupported application that relies on IIS however intermittently brings out the website it is integrated with. I have looked at the logs and there is nothing in the logs to indicate what the issue could be as the logs only have GET verbs. I have also looked at the event viewer and there are no error logged in there either. The application runs off a Windows 2008 server. Is there a freely available application we can have running in the background that will listen to or is aware of the application running and traps the error when it crashes? The unsupported application is a bespoke implementation for which we don't have code for and the developer is no longer contactable.

Internal users will be located inside of the firewall as same as the application server and the external users are outside over the internet. All users will be authenticated via a login by the web application. I would like a setup where the external users will be required to access whole of the application using SSL and the internal users via standard http connection. (for anyone that knows AutoCAD, I want XREF abilities in Word) Essentially I have a custom "header" that I want included in a whole pile of documents... that all reference a single file... such that if my address, logo, tagline, phone, fax or email changes, I update the one file, and all of the other 101 files that use it automatically update when I next open/use them. • FBReader: How do I get it to display partial images?

  I've been using FBReader so far for reading e-books, but my problem with it is how it handles images. Whenever there's an image, it isn't displayed until all of it can be displayed (i.e. it won't show if you haven't scrolled down far enough) and scrolling isn't smooth because the image is treated as one line. Is there a way to change this so that it displays the partially visible images? If there is not a way to change this, I am open to software suggestions to use as an alternative (I'm using Linux). I have already tried Calibre, but I find that it's too bloated. It takes ages to start up, and I don't want a directory for all my e-books...

  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

• Error while deploying a web application in OSGI container using pax web

  Hello I am trying to deploy a web application in a Felix container. I have all the required configuration done with my web app like the setting up of the manifest headers: Webapp-Context: Bundle-ClassPath: Bundle-Activator: Import-Package: Bundle-SymbolicName: etc The Pax bundles that I have dropped in the same container are: pax-web-service-0.6.0.jar pax-web-jsp-0.7.1.jar pax-web-extender-war-0.7.1.jar pax-logging-service-1.5.0.jar pax-logging-api-1.5.0.jar Though it had been written in the pax web site that pax-web-service is included in pax-war-extender, it seems without pax-web-service bundle, all other bundles become handicapped. I had removed the other pax bundles like pax-web-extender-whiteboard-0.7.1.jar pax-web-jetty-0.7.1.jar, as I have not seen any usefulness of those. The pax-web-jetty-0.7.1.jar even does not get start up. it has dependencies which it could not be able to resolve from any one of the bundle provided by PAX.
