    Does SqlServer has to start a Scan to execute a stored procedure? In Sql Profiler I can see this: RPC Starting ( exec sp_Edu3_SelectExamSession @ExamSessionId=N'AccessCode39361814' ) Scan:Started Scan:Started Scan:Started RPC Completed ( exec sp_Edu3_SelectExamSession @ExamSessionId=N'AccessCode39361814' ) Can I somehow see what's happening in the Stored Procedure? Different queries are done in that SP, but they do not seem to appear in Sql Profiler (maybe I need to check some more events?) The Scan:Started are probably scans by the queries in the sp? Or not?

    I'd like to determine if my web app is read-heavy, write-heavy, or somewhere in between. I could take a guess, but I want proof. Is there a query I could run in Sql Server 2005 that would tell me the overall read/write ratio? Are there any caveats I should be aware of? Perhaps it can be found in a DMV query, or the Performance Dashboard, or examining a Sql Profiler trace. I'm not sure exactly how.

    Is there a quick and easy way to backup both SQL Server 2008 and MySQL, all their databases? Right now I have a batch script that runs, but I have to manually add a database each and every time, and I'm sick of maintaining it. So I want to set it up to backup all SQL Server and then all MySQL, I dont care if its two different solutions, just want the ability to backup all the databases without having to type them in.     I've been doing a convert(varchar,datefield,112) on each date field that I'm using in 'between' queries in SQL server to ensure that I'm only accounting for dates and not missing any based on the time part of datetime fields. Now, I'm hearing that the converts aren't indexable and that there are better methods, in SQL Server 2005, to compare the date part of datetimes in a query to determine if dates fall in a range. What is the optimal, indexable, method of doing something like this: select * from appointments where appointmentDate='08-01-2008' and appointmentDate<'08-15-2008'

    First let me thank you all for your help. What I need is a function that takes in a EPOCH time stamp, like 1452.235687 and converts it to a readable timestamp like '01-01-1970 00:00:00'. More specifically I only need the time not the date. If at all possible I would prefer a .NET function instead of a SQL stored procedure. However an SQL stored procedure would work fine as well.     In one of the Stackoverflow podcasts, I remember Jeff Atwood saying that there was a configuration option in SQL Server 2008 which cuts down on locking, and was kind of an alternative to using "with (nolock)" in all your queries. Does anybody know how to enable the feature he was talking about, possibly even Jeff himself. I'm looking at deploying SQL Server 2008, and want to see if using a feature like this would help out my web application.

    Does anyone know how we can install BIDS for SQL Server 2008 without having to install the Database Engine? With the SQL Server 2008 Express install it appears to be mandatory to install the Database Engine when all we would like the end users to have access to is BIDS to develop their RDL's to deploy to an existing SSRS instance? It looks like BIDS 2005 was available as a standalone download - the toolkit - however I cannot find anything similar for 2008.
