• Bash script "read" not pausing for user input when executed from SSH shell

  I'm new to Bash scripting, so please be gentle. I'm connected to a Ubuntu server via SSH (PuTTY) and when I run this command, I expect the bash script that downloads and executes to allow user input and then echo that input. It seems to just write out the echo label for the input request and terminate. wget -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh | bash Any clue what I might be doing wrong? UPDATE: This bash command does exactly what I wanted bash <(wget -q -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh)

• Configuration files for C in linux

  Hi, I have an executable that run time should take configuration parameters from a script file. This way I dont need to re-compile the code for every configuration change. Right now I have all the configuration values in a .h file. Everytime I change it i need to re-compile. The platform is C, gcc under Linux. What is the best solution for this problem? I looked up on google and so XML, phthon and Lua bindings for C. Is using a separate scripting language the best approach? If so, which one would you recommend for my need? Thanks

• Integration of Photoshop and MySQL

  I’m working to integrate Photoshop (CS4, local) with MySQL (Linux, remote), such that: a) image file information, data and meta data can be exported from PS into MySQL where same can be manipulated both manually and calculated, and then b) the MySQL fields can be referenced in Photoshop scripting for further automated image file manipulation, and c) the MySQL fields can be referenced for other purposes such as dynamic propagation of files and associated file data to a website, for example. I’ve spent many hours running searches for these concepts on StackOverflow, Google, and Adobe Support. I’m coming up empty, which leads me to believe that it’s not natively possible, and that I’ll need some middle language like PHP. Does anyone know if it’s possible for Photoshop and MySQL to bi-directionally share data? If so, how? If that’s not possible, what solution(s) might you recommend, in terms of specific tools/technologies that I can research further. Thank you.

• Drupal / ubercart remote node addition

  I am developing my first large Ubercart site, which needs to have a daily product database update from an existing xBase (DBF format). The conversion from DBF to MySQL/PHP is handled on the same server as the Drupal installation, using some custom scripting I have done, and works well. However, the next step is to get my script to talk to Drupal and update the product nodes with pricing/stock level/etc. Googling hasn't resulted in any good hits, at least in PHP terms. So how do I go about this? Can I just use a POST to a particular page in Drupal, ie RESTful, or do I have to use some more arcane xmlrpc method?

  going through both the django book and tutorial, am a bit confused to the differences in approach (aren't they both written by the same people?) can anyone who has experience in both give a short review on them? i have decent python skills (largely untested though), but no experience at all in web apps and am trying to decide which one to stick to. i briefly looked in to practical django projects but that was a bit too complicated for me, my background is primarily bash scripting, the python i know i learned from an instant hacking tutorial and diving into python.

How to maintain state in HTTP? What are the downsides to maintaining state via cookie & what happens when browsers disable them?   which is the best tool for this - Automation of signup process to a website , e.g an email signup The tool should be able to take data from an external data file like an excel of csv file this data file would contain data such as first name , last name , username, password etc. basic data required during an email signup . I am imagining the data file to contain of each field in a seperate column and each row to contain data for different registration / user. At the places where manual intervention is required like image verification etc. the tool should be able to pause the script until manual bit is done then continue with the script.   Hello! Couple of questions regarding Twill and Mechanize: 1) Is Twill still relevant as a web-automation tool? If yes, then why is not currently maintained? If no, has Mechanize matured further to support Twill-style simple scripting? Or is there another package that has stepped up to fill the gap? 2) I was able to very quickly setup a couple of test suites in python using Twill, but I'm a little confused on how to access the information that Twill spits out in my python program. That is, I can do showforms() and see the form values neatly listed and I can use fv to update the form values and submit. But how do I access one of those form values as a python var?   Hello, I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join but am pretty confused (I know I am very bad at scripting/programming) See, according to the docs ( http://docs.python.org/library/os.path.html ) if I say os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get C:sourcedir as it's output. According to the docs, this is normal (right?) But when I use the copytree command, Python will output it the desired way, for example import shutil src = os.path.join('c:', 'src') dst = os.path.join('c':', 'dst') shutil.copytree(src, dst) Here is the error code I get WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C:src/.' If I wrap the os.path.join with os.path.normpath I get the same error If this os.path.join can't be used this way, then I am confused as to its purpose According to the pages suggested by Stack Overflow, slashes should not be used in join--that is correct I assume? • What would you like to see in an beginner's ASP.NET security book

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!) • Automatic VM deployment

  I have an idea to streamline deployments of prototypes within our team using VMs. The idea would be that a developer would be able to deploy their artifacts to Maven, then use a Web interface to pull them onto a development VM for integration/regression testing. They would then be able to to push those artifacts to a reference system, and finally onto production. I'm currently thinking of doing this myself using the vSphere Java API ( http://vijava.sourceforge.net/ ), and some simple scripting to grab artifacts from the Maven repository, configuration from SVN, and then start up a JBoss server. It feels like the kind of thing that may already be available though, has anyone heard of something similar?

• AutoKey - clipboard.get_selection() function fails on certain strings

  I've simplified my script so you can focus on the essence my problem. In AutoKey (not AutoHotKey), I made a Hot-Key (shift-alt-T) that performs this script on any string I have highlighted (like in gedit for example -- but any other gui editor too). strSelectedText = clipboard.get_selection() keyboard.send_keys(" " + strSelectedText) The script modifies the highlighted text and adds a space to the beginning of the string. It works for most strings I highlight, but not this one: * Copyright © 2008–2012 Lonnie Best. Licensed under the MIT License. It works for this string: * Add a Space 2.0.1 but not on this one: * Add a Space 2.0.1 – At the python command prompt, it has no problem any of those strings, yet the clipboard.get_selection() function seems to get corrupted by them. I'm rather new to python scripting, so I'm not sure if this is an AutoKey bug, or if I'm missing some knowledge I should know about encoding/preparing strings in python. Please help. • How can I monitor if a cookie is being sent to a domain other than the one it originated from?

  I am trying to write a program that will verify that all cookies sent out from the machine are in fact going to the domain they came from. This is part of a larger security project to detect cookie based malicious attacks (such as XSS). The main snag for this project is actually detecting the out-going cookies. Can someone point me in the right direction for monitoring out-going HTTP traffic for cookie information? • Script or automate feature class creation in ESRI/ArcSDE

  I'm looking for info on how to write SQL scripts to automate the creation of a versioned feature class in ArcSDE I want to be able to automate the process itself as well as put the scripts under version control. Can anyone point me to a resource that explains how to do this? Is this even possible? It seems like there are lots of interrelationships between tables and data when a feature class is added. P.S. It doesn't have to be pure SQL, but it should be some kind of scripting so we can save to version control and run outside of ESRI desktop tools.

  Hi, I've been using Ruby as my main scripting language for years but switched to .NET several years ago. I'd like to continue using Ruby (primarily for testing) BUT the toolset for IronRuby is really nonexistent. Why? In Python, meanwhile, there are project templates and full intellisense support. Why isn't there something like that for IronRuby? The only thing I've been able to find on it is "there are no plans for VS integration at this time." Why???

• getting the path of a file from its grandparent folder

  i have a php file which has the followng path Shubhmangalam/admin/welcome_image_edition/delete_image.php and an image file with the follwing path Shubhmangalam/welcome_images/image_1.jpg i want to delete the image_1.jpg file which i know can be done by using unlink() method.. but the prob is that the parent folder of the .php file and .jpg file is different, and so is their level of file-system...and i cant find the proper way to get the path to delete the image_1.jpg file. now the code on the delete_image.php is accordingly <?php $image=$_REQUEST['image']; if(unlink("./../welcome_images/".$image)) echo "Successfully Deleted"; else echo "Wrong"; ?> now the above is server-scripting code, i want to delete the image by getting appropriate path.. i dnt want the actual path, but the path from the project folder that is Shubhmangalam thanks in advance

• Debugging IDAPython Scripts outside of IDAPro

  I'm kinda new to scripting for IDA - nevertheless, I've written a complex script I need to debug, as it is not working properly. It is composed of a few different files containing a few different classes. Writing line-by-line in the commandline is not effective for obvious reasons. Running a whole script from the File doesn't allow debugging. Is there a way of using the idc, idautils, idaapi not from within IDA? I've written the script on PyDev for Eclipse, I'm hoping for a way to run the scripts from within it. A similar question is, can the api classes I have mentioned work on idb files without IDA having them loaded? Thanks.

• Preventing spam bots on site?

  We're having an issue on one of our fairly large websites with spam bots. It appears the bots are creating user accounts and then posting journal entries which lead to various spam links. It appears they are bypassing our captcha somehow -- either it's been cracked or they're using another method to create accounts. We're looking to do email activation for the accounts, but we're about a week away from implementing such changes (due to busy schedules). However, I don't feel like this will be enough if they're using an SQL exploit somewhere on the site and doing the whole cross site scripting thing. So my question to you: If they are using some kind of XSS exploit, how can I find it? I'm securing statements where I can but, again, its a fairly large site and it'd take me awhile to actively clean up SQL statements to prevent XSS. Can you recommend anything to help our situation?

• Is it possible to use DLR in a .NET 3.5 website project?

  I'm trying to evaluate an expression stored in a database i.e. "if (Q1 ==2) {result = 3.1;} elseif (Q1 ==3){result=4.1;} else result = 5.9;" Rather than parsing it myself I'm trying to use the DLR. I'm using version .92 from the Codeplex repository and my solution is a .NET 3.5 website; and I'm having conflicts between the System.Core and Microsoft.Scripting.ExtenstionAttribute .dll's. Error = { Description: "'ExtensionAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices'.", File: "InternalXmlHelper.vb" } At this time I cannot upgrade to .NET 4.0 and make significant use of the .net 3.5 features (so downgrading is not an option). Any help greatly appreciated.

• GIS: When and why to use ArcObjects over GDAL programming to work with ArcGIS rasters and vectors?

  Im just starting off with GDAL + python to support operations that cannot be done with ArcGIS python geoprocessing scripting. Mainly I am doing spatial modeling/analysis/editing of raster and vector data. I am a bit confused when ArcObject development is required versus when GDAL can be used? Is there functionality of ArcObjects that GDAL does not do? Is the opposite true too? I am assuming that ArcObjects are more useful in developing online tools versus Desktop analysis and modeling where the difference is more to do with preference? In my case i prefer GDAL because of python support, which I believe ArcObjects lack. thanks!

• How to programmatically add mailbox alias on an Exchange 2007 server from C# web app?

  As the subject says, I have a C# web application (.NET 3.5) that's communicating with an Exchange 2007 server. What I need help with is to programmatically (preferably from the web app itself) add a new mailbox alias to a certain mailbox and then before sending out the mail set the new alias as the reply-to address. I'm fairly new to scripting, but from what I've read so far, most people seem to be suggesting the Exchange Powershell to accomplish this. Any hints towards a third-part API that would solve this would be appreciated. I've looked at the EWS API but from what I've seen so far it doesn't look like that's what I'm looking for.

• Where are the new languages?

  Most now mainstream/popular (interpreted|scripting) programming languages were created around the 1990's. (Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP just to name a few). How many people knew about those languages around 1-2 years after they had been first published? Are there languages with potential of becoming as important as e.g.: Python or PHP being developed at the moment? I mean ... is there someone even seriously trying to create a new one? If the first version of a programming language is published and nearly nobody knows about it, as it was with all the languages I've mentioned above, where could I find out? Is there some sort of "list" or "network" dealing just with non-language-specific news? Is the area where Perl, Python, Ruby and PHP fit in already fully covered? Do you know of concrete examples of new programming languages being seriously developed or rising at the moment? (Except Google's go!)

• Why is my JavaScript Twitter feed not working in Internet Explorer?

  We're rolling out a redesign of helpcurenow.org, and we've implemented a Twitter feed in the footer. (I'm the design & front end guy, my coworker is the scripting & backend guy). All is well with the Twitter feed in all major browsers except internet explorer, version 8 and later. However we have no clue why IE is not pulling the feed at all.
