  • Internet Explorer 8 Viewing PDF files vs saving them

    I have a user asking about viewing PDF files in Internet Explorer. When she clicks the file link on a website, IE prompts her to save the file, which she then has to open to read. What she's not seeing in the prompt is the ability to open the file without having to save it, or, just opening the PDF automatically. She and a few others are having the same problem, while a majority of the user do not have this problem. All of the users have IE 8 and Adobe Reader 9 installed. I've verified that Adobe Reader's "Display PDF in browser" option is enabled. What else should I check?

  • Is there a way of disabled byte-range requests in Apache?

    I have a web page with a link to a PDF file (target="_blank"). If I click the link, the PDF reader just shows a grey screen within the Firefox browser. If I copy that link and manually open it in a new tab, the PDF will display correctly, and subsequent requests made by clicking the original link now work, suggesting that the problem occurs when loading the file into the cache. It appears as though the Adobe PDF reader plugin is making byte-range requests (I see lots of 206 responses) and I suspect that this may be the cause of the issue. I am running an Apache webserver. Has anyone had problems with Apache and Adobe's byte-range requests? Are there any workarounds? Perhaps a way of configuring Apache to ignore byte-range requests on PDFs?

  • Ideas for web development practical jokes?

    I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

  • Does there exist an "idea checkout system" on the Internet?

    Greetings. I would like to ask the following question: is there anything on the Internet like an "idea checkout" system? Situation: I'm a software developer. Since my current job has started 2 years ago, my mentor at that time has pointed me to the open source world. I have only put little time to look at some of the open source projects, let alone any contribution. However, it is my wish to start developing something outside of the work. Well, except a little problem. I don't know what to develop! It is not about the technical knowledge; the problem is that, I am not a creative person. I am very good at analytical thinking, as well as debugging skills. When being told by my work partners to develop a solution, I could get it done without a problem. However, outside of work, I have no idea what to develop. When I look at the Internet, it seems that so many people have already been developing on so many interesting stuff, making me wonder what I could develop, so that I would not reinvent something already existed. That starts to make me wonder. On the Internet, is there anything like an "idea checkout" system or society? For example, some people would throw in as a software idea, and the system would keep it as an "inventory"; later, a potential software developer would "check out" the idea, just a how people would check out a book from the library. Then, the developer would check the "idea" back in, with a certain kind of work-in-progress or developed software, thus becoming an open-source project. I have just noticed that here at stackoverflow, there is a "Project-Ideas" tag, so perhaps that can provide me some ideas on what to develop; still, my wonder is about a system that people would provide ideas, and people would check out ideas to develop / implement into actual solution. Is there such a system or society existing anywhere on the Internet? Any input is welcome! Thank you very much. Update: Thank you for everyone who has answered my question. Certainly, "getting idea" is part of my problem; as a software developer, however, I'm concerned more than just "getting idea". What I am concerned more, as I have commented, is about the existence of such an idea exchanging ecosystem, capable to initiate open-source projects. I'll put an example here. Say, person A has an idea of music search program, but not search by the attributes of the music (composer, singer, publisher, lyrics, etc.); instead, he wants a program (and a database) to search a piece of music by melody. Very often, people only remember a piece of music by its melody, not even the name of the music (e.g. the music he wants was only once heard in a bookstore, but the melody just gets stuck in his head!). In order to find that piece, normally he would just need to blindly search for it, and spent a long time to do so. A search by melody would enable person A to find the piece much quicker. However, he would not want to personally work on it, not just because of the complexity (he is not a musician and/or programmer, knowing almost nothing about music systems in computer, search algorithms, etc.), but also legal issues (RIAA??), thus he would just like to keep the idea at some place, and let other people to work on that. Now, a developer (person B) may be at the same stage as I am right now, wishing to find something to develop, but not having an idea. With the idea exchanging ecosystem, person B will search, and somehow discover person A's music search idea, and feeling interested enough to work on it. So he "checks out" the idea, start working on it (at least a skeleton), and checks back in with the progress. An open-source project starts from here, fulfilling person A's wish, and person B's programming desire. The above is just an example, because there are already such systems exist on the Internet, but it illustrates what I think about the idea exchange system in my mind. My main concern is about idea exchanging ecosystem, not at personal and unorganized level, but at a semi-organized protocol that's specifically for software developers, having actual projects coming out as the fruits. Not about "projects", but about "ideas and product of ideas". Hopefully that would clear up some of the original idea of this question. Any input is welcome; in fact, I would like to hear as many people as possible how everyone thinks about this. Thank you very much!

  • SMS war continues, ideas welcome

    I am trying to make U9 telit modem send SMS messages. I think I handle protocol correctly, at least, I manage to send them, but only under these circumstances: the native application was executed beforehand, and killed by task manager (without giving it a chance to initialize things). It looks like the supplied application is good at doing certain initialization/deinitialization which is critical. I also see the difference between the two states in output of AT+CIND command. When I am trying to do things on my own, it returns zeroes (including signal quality), but when I run the same command after killing the native application, the output looks reasonable. I am out nearly of ideas. I have tried many things, including attempts to spy at modem's COM ports (didn't work). Haven't tried setting windows hooks to see what the application is trying to get thru. Perhaps you have encountered a similar situation?

    Hello I am working with on an app that uses wpf / silverlight on the front end and nhibernate on the back end, and looking for some design ideas to address authentication; I was looking at Rhino Security which I think is pretty slick and certainly useful, but doesn't in and of itself seem to address authentication. That said, I am looking for something of a technology agnostic overview of authentication design issues at this point.   • Ideas for building vulnerabilities into your site?

    I'm trying to create a programming challenge that would require developers to hack into the MVC site I create. The idea is obviously to teach them about preventing these types of attacks. The current idea I have is to build multiple vulnerabilities into the site - but the second vulnerability would require the first to be completed, etc. So I was thinking the first could be a sql injection attack, the second would require a modified GET request, etc. Exploiting the final vulnerability would reveal a specific piece of information which is proof that you have completed the entire challenge. This will not be deployed on a public site - it's simply a learning tool for developers at my company. I'm not looking for MVC-specific vulnerabilities - I'm simply using MVC because it allows me to work with the 'raw' HTML. Any ideas on the different vulnerabilities I can use?

    I'm looking for a pet project idea in Java. I'm a Software Engineering undergraduate finishing my 3rd year. I have also been working for the past 1.5-2 years programming in C++, and I get enough of that at work. I recently learned Java and I like it very much. Already done some project assignments and some really small console applications, but I'm looking for something to invest my time in. I would like a project that is complex enough to "brag about" (have it open sourced and get people interested, added to resume) and learn while doing it, but also simple enough to be able to at least have a working version in a few months. I know the most common advice is something that I need, but I admit I simply couldn't think of anything like that. Any ideas?

    All, I am looking for some web application design ideas here. I have a server X that hosts an SDK, which has the capacity to talk a piece of hardware. When I make an HTTPS request from an external PHP web application (hosted on Server Y) to Server X through curl, Server X gives JSON data as a response. I use this data to render my UI for the web app on Server Y. The above method seems to be slow and has a tendency to fail in production if there are too many concurrent requests. Can anybody let me know if there is an alternative to CURL or any other design people are using to pull data like this from servers? Thanks

  • Tag Suggestion system, approaches and ideas

    Hi guys! -- I am working on a (auto) tag suggestion system (NOT tag autocomplete). Lets say I want to suggest tags for a given question like here on SO (although SO's tagging system is auto-complete). My main idea is to get the intersection between the tags_set and the given question.split()_set. (In python the set_intersection is efficient enough). Also, in order to make it a little bit more accurate I might use words-distance to count as 'the same' very close words i.e movie == movies. For now I am not thinking about using any Collaborative Filtering technique looking for the tags to similar questions and so on, because I believe since the question text is pretty short (comparing with a blog article or a paper) it is not worth the effort. So I was wondering if you have any other (more) efficient approaches to suggest. Any ideas, specially from people who they have done something like that before, are more than welcome.

    Hi, I discovered a bug in my Rails app due to Rails app and gems upgrades and undocumented code from the previous developers. I have a lot of images that have been processed, but not sized correctly using attachment_fu. All of the images that were uploaded since the upgrade need to be resized correctly. Does anyone have any ideas to reprocess all of the images within the folders and resize them to the correct sizes? I'd hate to have to do these all manually. THANKS!! Cindy

    Hello, I have following setup Apache Box <=> Weblogic Box1 <=> Weblogic Box2 Apache Box : mod_weblogic(weblogic apache plugin), mod_deflate Weblogic Box1 : Weblogic 10.3 Weblogic Portal, Adobe BlazeDS Weblogic Box2 : Weblogic 10.3 SUN Jersey for REST API Apache forwards the request to Box1, where some of the REST requests get forwarded to Box 2 by Adobe BlazeDS. On Apache i have setup mod_deflate and mod_weblogic as follows: <IfModule mod_weblogic.c> WebLogicHost portalappeng.xxx.com WebLogicPort 7001 </IfModule> <Location /Portal> SetHandler weblogic-handler SetOutputFilter DEFLATE </Location> but when i look at the Apache deflate log i only see the jsp responses from Box1 being compressed, but the responses which BlazeDS forwarded to Box 2 are not compressed. Also the .js and .css files which are served from Box1 are not compressed Here are sample from log file, first response came directly from Box1 and got compressed, second and third also from Box1 but not compressed. Fourth one came from Box 2 to Box 1(BlazeDS) and then to Apache, not compressed. What am i missing?   • Looking for ideas for a simple pattern matching algorithm to run on a microcontroller

    I'm working on a project to recognize simple audio patterns. I have two data sets, each made up of between 4 and 32 note/duration pairs. One set is predefined, the other is from an incoming data stream. The length of the two strongly correlated data sets is often different, but roughly the same "shape". My goal is to come up with some sort of ranking as to how well the two data sets correlate/match. I have converted the incoming frequencies to pitch and shifted the incoming data stream's pitch so that it's average pitch matches that of the predefined data set. I also stretch/compress the incoming data set's durations to match the overall duration of the predefined set.     I'm a Computer Science undergraduate student in UK and should be deciding the subject of my final year project soon. The school is pretty flexible with the subject... "The topic can be any area of the subject which is of mutual interest to both the student and supervisor. Topics can range from purely theoretical studies to practical work building a system for some third party, although most projects aim to provide a balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject." ...so I'm a bit lost since I want to do something in software engineering but have no idea what (subject) or with what (languages)! :) a) Languages: I've had experience with Java, C# and ASP.NET mostly but I would definitely be interested in learning new languages/frameworks. I'm kind of drawn by the idea of dynamic languages at the moment so IronPython seems likely. b) Subject: Anything that will keep me interested through the year and will give me the opportunity to learn a lot of stuff. Maybe something that has to do with music, or a fancy website, or a website about music :P anything really. Open to any thoughts/ideas, geeky or cool! Edit: Professors do usually supervise projects in their research areas but I currently have the choice to approach any of them according to my interest - whatever that is.

    I wanted to try something new and so I designed some programming languages and wrote interpreters for them: A rather low-level, not very expressive language. (I didn't want to parse complex expressions right at the beginning) It featured: Variables (yay) Subroutines, with a call stack Basic arithmetic functions, basic string manipulation, ... Code in the language looks like this: set i 0 inc i print i Very, very basic you see. A more high-level language I decided to make it structured and so it featured things like if-else, while, functions, and so on. The stuff most programming languages have. Ended up like a unworthy Python clone, I hated that. A code-golf language Which ended up similar to J, golfcode, APL, etc. Nothing special As you can see: I don't lack the skills but the ideas. I can't figure out anything new, not even bad, unneccessary things, for my languages. - Do you know of some weird things I could implement in my languages, which don't try to make programming harder (like most esoteric languages) but funnier or more different from other languages? It can't be possible that every weird thing has been tried out so far, or?

    Hi guys, I have a very simple data entry form to implement. It looks like this: Obviously I have mocked out the actual requirements but the essence is similar. Entering a name and clicking history should bring up a pop up pointing to the url '/student/viewhistory/{name}' Name and age are required fields The sub form (in the mockup) with Class (a drop down, containing the numbers 1 - 10) and Subject (containing A - D, say) form a unique pair of values for which a score is required. So, selecting the Class and Subject, entering a score and clicking on Add should 'add' this record for the student. Then the user should be able to click Save (to persist the entry to the database) or be able to add further (class, subject, score) pairs to the entry. Any ideas how to smartly implement this? (I am coming from a DWH field... so thinking in a stateless manner is slightly foreign to me.) Any help is appreciated. I would imagine a smart use of jQuery would give a easy solution.     I opened a PNG containing an alpha channel in Photoshop and wanted to get the opacity / alpha of a given point in the PNG file, so that I could match that opacity in a new photoshop layer. How can I do this? is there any way to get an alpha value at a point the way the color sample tool gives RGB values at a given point?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 - Pound Reverse Proxy and Adobe Flex/Flash Auth

    First time posting, I have a completely fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 Client as a reverse proxy gateway to our internal network. Our setup is we have one external ip but three domains we would like to point to various webservers on our internal network. It's not so much a load balancing issue or cacheing etc. Merely routing some Client browsers to a port 80 webpage (to adhere to some stricter corporate policies regarding placing port numbers after domain names). I have gone with pound and everything seems to be working fine. Static pages load etc. Everything is good with the exception of a Flash/Flex based WebClient for a Digital Asset Management program. The actual static page loads fine, it is just at the moment of entering credentials, be they correct or incorrect, and hitting login, there is no response whatsoever. Either a rejection or confirmation etc. So the request back to the internal server can't be getting through. I have googled extensively and there might be a solution in a crossdomain.xml file? Documentation isn't very clear. And we are not the authors of the DAM app, and have no control over the code on the Flash/Flex side. Questions: Is there a particular config file/solution for pound that allows Flash/Flex auth information to be forwarded? Is there another reverse proxy program (nginx?)that allows this type of config? Am I looking at this the entire wrong way, should Flash/Flex fundamentally not be allowed to have this access?
