  • Prevent Server Restart after Windows Updates

    we have a number of servers in our office, as a small hosting company, and these servers are critical to business, ... web server, mail server, db server, etc. On a semi-regular basis, when the machines get automatic updates, they just automagically reboot themselves in the middle of the night. A number of them have software which must be running on the console session (bad practice, I know, but out of my control). When they reboot themselves, these programs obviously shut down, leaving customers upset and services interrupted. How do you set a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine to NEVER automagically reboot itself after updates? And perhaps, if possible, to instead email someone so that they are aware it needs a pending reboot and can schedule it for the best time? Thanks in advance!

But when I start installing all the updates, patches & less .NET 4.0 client (As the .NET 4.0 Client seems to bring machine to slow crawl). The pc starts to slow down.. like there is more resources to watch or something in the background is happening. So could I not get away with a awesome virus protector & awesome firewall set-up and avoid all the patches? The machine I have is a quad 4, 4gb ram and 2.3 GHZ process. Tons of room and the machine can run several apps at one time.. but when the updates happen.. its s-l-o-w!

  • WSUS Looping 2 updates on 2003 servers

    Good afternoon, Hopefully I can articulate this so that people understand my problem. We have WSUS on windows server 2008. We have 8 Windows 2003 servers. There is an update ready to install KB2982792. We install it then it says there is another update to install KB2728973. Then it says there is another update to install, again KB2982792. This goes on and on. Talked to microsoft support and they confirmed that the update was infact installed and applied to the computer (Checking untrusted certifactions confirmed that for these updates) and their suggestion was to just "Hide update". This is fine except on the WSUS server it still shows failed updates which is not okay with our policy. I'm here to ask for help figuring this out and what I can do to trouble shoot it. Never update anything? 2. What happens if Windows or some other program is set to update automatically and attempts to do so while you are using a public Wi-Fi?   • Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

    I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop?     (In my case this message never appeared before installing Ubuntu One - see this question). Can I use Ubuntu One and avoid being prompted each time like this? I use Lubuntu 12.04. Edit: After exchanging comments I add the supplementary info: I am asked for password and to select session if I log out and in (auto-login is NOT set). Ubuntu One is installed but set NOT to start with session. Keyring appears nonetheless. Before installing Ubuntu One this didn't happen. Also, following the advice of con-f-use, I have entered ps -A | grep -i ubunt[u] in terminal, and got 2346 ? 00:00:01 ubuntuone-syncd, which means that ubuntuone is running when it was not supposed to.

    I was playing around with "User accounts" and somehow set automatic login. Now, when I start my PC, it just has one button named as "login". Clicking that button, directly logs me in to my PC. There is no music or no asking for password while logging in. As a side effect, it asks me separately for keyring password How to disable auto login and make login/keyring password unified again like before? NOTE: Attempting to disable Automatic Login from System Settings User Accounts does not work.   • Forcing CLLocationManager updates - does it help or hurt?

    I've been trying to find any way to optimize the performance of my location-based iPhone application and have seen some people mention that you can force location updates by starting and stopping your CLLocationManager. I need the best accuracy I can get, and the user in my case would probably like to see updates every few seconds (say, 10 seconds) as they walk around. I've set the filters accordingly, but I notice that sometimes I don't get any updates on the device for quite some time. I'm testing the following approach, which forces an update when a fixed time interval passes (I'm using 20 seconds). My gut tells me this really won't help me provide more accurate updates to the user, and that just leaving CLLocationManager running all the time is probably the best approach. - (void)forceLocationUpdate { [[LocationManager locationManager] stopUpdates]; [[LocationManager locationManager] startUpdates]; [self performSelector:@selector(forceLocationUpdate) withObject:nil afterDelay:20.0]; } My question is- does forcing updates from CLLocationManager actually improve core location performance?   • What is auto-mounting my media volume?

    Something is repeatedly mounting my "media" share, doing something with it, then quietly un-mounting it with no notifications at the user level. from the little I can gleaned from the console messages below, I thought I'd managed to stop it, if not understand it last night when I followed instructions for deleting all traces of the Google Update Daemon. I've not been using any Google apps whatsoever, so I was surprised to see that in Console. What's more surprising, and perhaps a little distressing, is that the same thing occurred this evening, when the Google Daemon is long gone. I don't have that log because I can't recall precisely what time it occurred. I'll do a search and provide it if you wish, though. In the meantime, any help with this would be extremely appreciated. I've asked over at Apple Discussions but I think it might be a little deeper than those manning the boards this weekend are comfortable with. It's certainly beyond my meager skills.   • Windows expand over 2 monitors in quad-monitor setup

    i just installed ubuntu 11.10 with my previous hardware setup: 4 monitors and 2 identical nvidia graphic cards. draging windows around all 4 monitors works nice, but when i maximize a window it expand always over 2 screens. Even for an empty class which simply extends an NSObject has many options, most of which seem completely useless.     On our 2003 Terminal Servers I am able to view any auto-created printers for users connected to that server, however on a new 2008 R2 RDS server I can only view local printers and my own auto-created printer(s). I have local and domain admin privileges. Is there something I need to change to be able to view all client printers? Is it possible? I have had a look for permissions relating to this but couldn't really find much that looked relevant.

Is there any way to remove this incorrect command from auto completion list without restarting the cmd prompt? Or a better way to achieve this? Without restarting because, there are other commands which are relevant for auto completion and also the environment (though it can be set by batch file).

Harddrives shouldn't be accessible from booted Lubuntu(normal user only). Would adding to fstab something like: /dev/sda1 /Idk/What auto noauto work? I'd like to add that I can uncompress squashfs livecd filesystem. If no, what other solution is there, to block auto-mounting /dev/sda drive?

I have since disabled the "auto-publish" apps in the instances but still have the applications listed. What is the correct/best way to clear them out. I read a post somewhere that you can just delete the shortcut in the start menu but I want to remove all links and don't know if that would suffice? Thanks TK
