A piece of advice, if you are searching for a solution to an issue, or a recommendation, or anything else on the web, when you find a post or a forum thread do 2 things. First, check the date on the post of thread. If it is older it may no longer be fully up to date and or inaccurate. Bear that in mind. Second, READ THE COMMENTS! Often small omissions or other issues in the post itself are resolved in the comments. If the solution to your issue does not appear to work check the comments. There may be a step missing or something else relavent that was raised by a prior reader or the author themselves. Cheers, Robert Porter

TechEd 2010 Day Three: The Database Designer (Isn't)

Yesterday at TechEd 2010 here in New Orleans I worked the front-booth, answering general SQL Server questions for the masses. I was actually a little surprised to find most of the questions I got were from folks that wanted to know more about Stream Insight and Master Data Services. In past conferences I've been asked a lot of "free consulting" questions, about problems folks have had from older products. I don't mind that a bit - in fact, I'm always happy to help in any way I can. But this time people are really interested in the new features in the product, and I like that they are thinking ahead, not just having to solve problems in production. My presentation was on "Database Design in an Hour". We had the usual fun, and SideShow Bob made an appearance - I kid you not. The guy in the back of the room looked just like Sideshow Bob, so I quickly held a "bes thair" contest, and he won. Duing the presentation, I explain the tools you can use to design databases. I also explain that the "Database Designer" tool in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) isn't truly a desinger - it uses non-standard notation, doesn't have a meta-data dictionary, and worst of all, it works at the physical level. In other words, whatever you do in SSMS will automatically change the field/table/relationship structures in the database. We fixed this in SSMS 2008 and higher by adding an option to block that, but the tool is not a good design function nonetheless. To be fair, no one I know of at Microsoft recommends that it is - but I was shocked to hear so many developers in the room defending it as a good tool. I think the main issue for someone who doesn't have to work with Relational Systems a great deal is that it can be difficult to figure out Foreign Keys. The syntax makes them look "backwards", so it's just easier to grab a field and place it on the table you want to point to. There are options. You can download a couple of free tools (CA has a community edition of ER-WIN, Quest has one, and Embarcadero also has one) and if you design more than one or two databases a year, it may be worth buying a true design tool. For years I used Visio, but we changed it so that it doesn't forward-engineer (create the DDL) any more, so it isn't a true design tool either. So investigate those free and not-so-free tools. You'll find they help you in your job - but stay away from the Database Designer in SSMS. Or I'll send Sideshow Bob over there to straighten you out. A Virtual Seat at the Architect’s Table

I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull. The three most recent programs were recorded during a virtual mini meet-up of architects back in February. You’ll find more detail here, but in a nutshell, I invited several previous Arch2Arch panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever was on their minds. JDeveloper does not recognize existing subversion working directory

Just a quick note about an issue where JDeveloper no longer recognized an existing subversion working directory. Symptom: JDeveloper Versioning menu offers to Version an Application that is already versioned in svn. Cause: The repository url contained in the hidden .svn folders of the working directory is no longer valid. Solution: Determine the correct url for the Subversion repository and update the .svn working directory.Fix the url contained in the svn folders of the working directory using the svn switch command. Example: In a shell change directory to the Application folder. Run the svn info command to confirm the current settings. $ svn info Path: . URL: http://192.168.1.128/repos/jdeveloperrepo/AsyncExamples/BPELCallAsync/trunk Repository Root: http://192.168.1.128/repos/jdeveloperrepo Repository UUID: 3dc5eb88-3001-0010-8d6e-fd6f73825647 Revision: 145 Node Kind: directory Schedule: normal Last Changed Rev: 145 Last Changed Date: 2012-06-07 07:15:56 -0700 (Thu, 07 Jun 2012) In this case, the IP address in the repository URL is incorrect, the svn server is located at 192.168.56.1 Note: The IP Address currently set is displayed after the Project Name in the Application Navigator. Citrix SDK: Where to start? [closed]

I'm needing to start hacking around the Citrix SDK and am trying to figure out where to start. I'm wanting to basically find a way to pass data from the client to the server and figure out how to open an application on the citrix client. I see there is a XenApp SDK, and Virtual Channel SDK but really don't know which one I need to start with. I have a Citrix development virtual server set up, but am unsure how to get started. Does someone know of a good site/tutorial on how to get started with the various Citrix API's quickly?

Extend OER to enable deletion of unsubmitted assets

This post provides a small extension to OER 11g that allows users without full Registrar permissions to delete their own unsubmitted assets. When the extension is installed in OER, a delete button conditionally appears on the Asset Details page of the OER Web App. The button is only visible if the selected Asset is in the 'Unsubmitted' state and the asset was created by the current user. When i clicked check this error message came up. But it does not come up when update manager strarts automatically. When you open update manager this error comes up. Any ideas on how to fix it? What is "egoless programming"?

I first heard this term about fifteen years ago. My understanding is similar to that described in the Wikipedia article and a TechRepublic article: you work with your colleagues in a "friendly, collegiate way in which personal feelings are put aside". It includes things like doing peer reviews with mutual respect and a desire to learn, and not feeling like you "own" code, so if somebody has a suggestion or says there's a bug or needs to change it, you don't get defensive about it. I've also thought it was largely about having an attitude that makes for good relations with other programmers with the goal of improving the code. So I haven't seen it as being incompatible with taking pride in the quality of your work or feeling regret if something you did caused your customer a problem. However, an answer to a recent question makes me think some other programmers have different understandings about "egoless programming". So what is the correct definition? And what are its implications?

Unable to create an Ubuntu 12.10 USB stick on OS X

I'm following the instructions to create a bootable Ubuntu 12.10 USB stick on OS X found here. I can do step 3 and hdiutil appears to work fine, but when I go to mount the resulting ubuntu.img file I get the same "no mountable file systems" error that I get when I try and open the ubuntu.iso file. No correctly sized volumes show up in diskutil list either. Any ideas? Using the most recent ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso on Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

The Increasing Focus on Architecture

If you follow my updates on Twitter or on the OTN ArchBeat page on Facebook you have probably noticed that I'm a regular reader of Joe McKendrick's SOA blog on ZDNet. Usually I'm content to simply share a link on my social networks when I find one of McKendrick's posts interesting. But with a recent post, In the cloud era, let's start calling IT what it is: 'Innovation Team', McKendrick hit on a point that warrants more than a quick link: "IT is no longer just a department full of people who code, build and maintain systems. IT is the business partner that plans and strategizes what types of technology solutions the business needs to move forward." Of course, what McKendrick is describing is an increased focus on architecture. Assuming that McKendrick's assessment is correct — and I do — that expanding focus, from coding, building, and maintaining systems to planning and strategizing technology solutions that serve the business, isn't limited to the organizational level. The individual roles within the IT organization will also have to shift to a more broadly architectural mindset. McKendrick's post references Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger's assessment of cloud computing as a critical "third model" of computing to emerge in the 50-year history of Information Technology. As computing itself evolves, the underlying roles that make computing possible must evolve accordingly. That evolution will be defined by an increased focus on architecture.

PHP Debugging

I have been trying on Windows, Linux (Ubuntu) and Mac OS X. So far my favorite environment is on Mac OS X. I have tried a number of IDE's and debuggers as well. IDE's Eclipse with the PDT Add On The PDT version of Eclipse Aptana Zend Netbeans Debuggers Zend XDebug So far the only environments that I could get running quickly were Zend and Netbeans. Eclipse is a nightmare of versions and capabilities. I could only get Eclipse working well on Windows. On Ubuntu I was able to get the debugger working once. Thats it, one session, then it never worked again. I love the Zend tools and environment and it worked well everywhere I tried it, but it was beyond my budget. Aptana also worked best on Windows, on Mac OS X it was fragile and I never could get debugging to work. Netbeans worked first time, every time, every where. With one oddity, after several debugging sessions the debugger would refuse to connect. On every platform, I would end having to reboot to restore debugging, which would then work correctly for quite some time. I am sure I will discover that some process is hanging and there is a less intrusive way to clear the issue, but for now rebooting always works. In a future post I will go over how exactly I set my environment up, for now I have decided to stay with OS X. By the way, I did NOT use MAMP or the Zend Server, I stuck with PHP compiled and built from source, as well as Apache and MySQL installed locally. I use Homebrew as a package manager for OS X. I tried PORT but did not like the fact I had to sudo all the time to use it, and it installed things in /opt which I was not used to. Homebrew does sandbox the apps but it is nice enough to symlink them to their "normal" locations usually in /usr/local.

Upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 fails early on

I am attempting to upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10. Right after the early on message Downloading file 1 of 2 and then it goes on to 2 of 2 the upgrade process dies. A reboot and attempt again fails at the same point. This is a 64 bit system with an SSD for the boot drive. If memory serves me when attempting to do same from the command line I saw some dbus error which may or may not be related. Any help much appreciated. Obviously I could attempt a fresh install which would likely succeed.

Windows 8 on my new i7 Macbook Pro

Using bootcamp I installed Windows 8 on my new Macbook Pro 15" (not a retina screen version), which has OS X 10.8.2, 2.6 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB RAM. I followed the simple procedure outlined here. The only problem I had was the wireless device driver wasn't provided. I had to find and download it myself. Even so it only provided 5G not 2G protocol support. I downloaded a Broadcom driver. I was able to enable the Hyper-V features on Windows 8 and look forward to using VMs. So far so good :)

I need help with Grub and restoring Windows?

I started out with Windows XP and then I installed Zorin (a sub distro of Ubuntu) and then I installed Ubuntu. This was working great. Then I installed Windows 8 on yet another partition and couldn't get into my other OSs. I asked my tech teacher at school how to fix it and she said just clear the partition that I installed Windows 8 on, so I booted onto a live version of Ubuntu and cleared the Windows 8 partition. Okay then I rebooted and it still went into Windows 8 for some reason. So I got back onto live Ubuntu and it turns out Windows 8 partition didn't clear for some reason so I did it again (and I'm positive it was the Windows 8 partition). I still couldn't fix grub but I needed something out of my XP partition so I mounted it on the live Ubuntu and now all the XP partition have are the folders 'Boot', 'Recovery', 'System Volume Information', 'temp' and the files 'bootmgr', 'BOOTNXT', 'BOOTSECT.BAK' and 'Recovery.txt'. Anybody know how to fix this or what I did wrong? Also, if I try booting from my hard drive it shows the Windows and says 'preparing automatic repair' then 'Diagnosing your PC' then restarts. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Variable names for Contact Information bits

I am in the middle of refactoring code and would like to get some ideas on variable naming so that my new names clearly represent the data they hold. I have a class called ContactMethod which makes sense to me; each instance is a different way to contact someone. My problem comes when naming the properties of ContactMethod. For example, one instance might be a Fax number of 555-555-5555 while another could be an Email address of [email protected]; I've got a property called contactMethodType to hold the values "fax" or "email", but I don't know what to call the "555-555-5555" or "[email protected]" part. Has anyone here created a good generic name for this piece of contact information? (PS - the old convention was to call it a "Phone" with fields "phoneType" holding the "fax"/"email" value and "phoneId" holding the number/address. Yuck.)

ssh login information

As the admin of my machine, I want users to be able to log into my computer with ssh, but I'm looking for a graphical way to be notified that a user is connected at the moment. If multiple users are connected, I want a list of connected users, their location, name, etc. This could be in the form of a forceCommand and 'alert' command when someone logs in, plus a icon saying how many people are connected right now in the notification bar, with the option to click on it to have more information about these users. Is there such a tool available in ubuntu, and if not, how to do it (I'm guessing it's not that difficult and could be done with under ten bash command lines) ?

How to search the web for programming related solutions?

I have the impression that Google has become unusable when searching for programming related questions. Example: I'm Googling for XML-RPC Redstone Cookie I'm expecting results where all three terms are contained. I don't care for results where one term misses. I guess until some months ago Google just worked this way, i.e. all terms were included. Somehow this feature is gone now (Google apparently thinks it is more intelligent than the user and knows what the user is searching for). So I helped myself putting a + in front of every word. This is, however, a bit cumbersome. And for the last weeks, it even doesn't work anymore in all cases, Google ignores the +. So how do you search for progamming related problems? Do you still use Google? If yes, which techniques do you use to get the right results? Or do you use another search engine? Which one?

Wordpress - how to replace  with string on the_content() in single.php [migrated]

I want to add text on a single wordpress blog post page where the "read more" text would usually be inserted. However, I can't configure a plugin to replace that text. I tried a few different sources, but I'm having trouble finding the solution. After looking through WordPress plugin: finding the  in the_content and the page it links to, I still haven't been able to find a solution to this.
