  • A good resource to get the most out of Google Analytics

    - by glinch
    I was wondering if any one could offer me some advice as to the best resources out there (ideally books) on google analytics. I have a basic understanding but have a lot of room for improvement. The following book "Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics" by Brian Clifton, appears to be a good starting but but is already quite dated, even though published in march 2010. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Allen White ( blog | twitter ), Erin Stellato ( blog | twitter ), Cory Stevenson, Brian Davis ( twitter ), and all others involved put on a fantastic event that endured some crappy weather, parking problems, and significant delays and hardship for at least one speaker - sorry Grant! (Grant wrote about his experience .) I was able to...(read more)

    - by user12543
    Hello, I'm trying to do a screen capture with gtk-recordmydesktop and other capture tools but for some reason, it will not capture an output screen while its running. It captures one screen but doesn't show the rest. I can capture my screen running if I use my flip camcorder but recordmydesktop will not work. Is there a way to capture live video playing on the desktop without using an outside camera? Brian

  • All hail the Excel Queen

    - by Tim Dexter
    An excellent question this past week from dear ol Blighty; actually from Brian at Nextgen Clearing Ltd in the big smoke (London). Brian was developing an excel template and wanted to be able to reference the data fields multiple times inside the Excel template. Damn good question and I of course has some wacky solutions, from macros and cell referencing in Excel to pre-processing the data with an XSL stylesheet to copy the data multiple times so it could be referenced multiple times. All completely outlandish, enter our Queen of Excel, Shirley from the development team. Shirley is singlehandedly responsible for the Excel templates, I put her through six months of hell a few years back, with a host of Excel template requirements. She was more than up to the challenge and has developed some great features. One of those, is the ability to use the hidden XDO_METADATA sheet to map the data to custom named fields so they can be used multiple times in the template. So simple and very neat! Excel template and regular Excel users will know that you can only use the naming function once ie the names have to be unique across the workbook so you can not reuse a cell/group name. To get around this you can just come up with as many cell names as you want and map them in the XDO_METADATA sheet to the data columns/fields in your XML data set:. For example: XDO_?DEPTNO_SUMMARY?  <?DEPTNO?> XDO_?DNAME_SUMMARY?  <?DNAME?> XDO_GROUP_?G_D_DETAIL? <xsl:for-each-group select=".//G_D" group-by="./DEPTNO"> XDO_?DEPTNO_DETAIL? <?DEPTNO?> As you can see DEPTNO has been referenced twice and mapped to different named values in the left hand column. These values can then be used to name individual cells in the Excel template. You'll also notice a mix of Publisher <? ...?> and native XSL commands. So the world is your oyster on the mapping and the complexity you might need for calculations or string manipulation. Shirley has kindly built out a sample Excel template, data and result here so you can see how it all hangs together. the XDO_METADATA sheet is hidden, just right click on the sheet names and use the Unhide command to show it.

  • The extern alias 'xxx' was not specified in a /reference option

    - by Brian Ensink
    I have two assemblies that unfortunately define the same type in the same namespace. I'm trying to use a an extern alias to work around the problem. In the Visual Studio IDE I have set the "Aliases" property of the reference to my alias. This is supposed to change the C# compiler command line to be something like this: /reference:MyAlias=MyAssembly.dll But it doesn't actually do that. The Visual Studio IDE seems to just ignore the Aliases property setting on the reference. So when I go and add the line extern alias MyAlias; at the top of my C# code file I get the error that the alias was not specified in a /reference option to the compiler. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

  • jQuery - window focus, blur events not triggering - works in Firefox and Chrome

    - by brian newman
    In a nutshell; I wrote a simplistic chat application for a buddy and me to use. When the window running the application does not have the focus (minimized or behind other windows) and a message comes in, I want to change the windows title bar to serve as an alert. Exactly like Google's chat application does in GMail. Everything works flawlessly in Firefox and Chrome but not in IE7 (haven't tested 8). This is the code I am using to determine if the window has focus. Can this be written differently to also work in IE? Also, I'm open to any other approaches to accomplish the same thing. Many thanks in advance. $(window).bind("blur", function() { hasfocus = false; }); $(window).bind("focus", function() { hasfocus = true; });

I can move the menu by applying a transform, but I was hoping to get this bouncing effect to work. I was looking into CAKeyframeAnimation, but I'm having trouble locating an example/tutorial. • TVirtualStringTree compatibility between Delphi 7 and Delphi 2010 - 'Parameter lists differ'

    - by Brian Frost
    Hi, I've made a form containing a TVirtualStringTree that works in Delphi 7 and Delphi 2010. I notice that as I move between the two platforms I get the message '...parameter list differ..' on the tree events and that the string type is changing bewteen TWideString (D7) and string (D2010). The only trick I've found to work to suppress this error is to use compiler directives as follows: {$IFDEF TargetDelphi7} procedure VirtualStringTree1GetText(Sender: TBaseVirtualTree; Node: PVirtualNode; Column: TColumnIndex; TextType: TVSTTextType; var CellText: WideString); {$ELSE} procedure VirtualStringTree1GetText(Sender: TBaseVirtualTree; Node: PVirtualNode; Column: TColumnIndex; TextType: TVSTTextType; var CellText: string); {$ENDIF} and to repeat this where the events are implemented. Am I missing a simple solution? Thanks.

  • iPhone SDK 3.2 UIGestureRecognizer interfering with UIView animations?

    - by Brian Cooley
    Are there known issues with gesture recognizers and the UIView class methods for animation? I am having problems with a sequence of animations on a UIImageView from UIGestureRecognizer callback. If the sequence of animations is started from a standard callback like TouchUpInside, the animation works fine. If it is started via the UILongPressGestureRecognizer, then the first animation jumps to the end and the second animation immediately begins. Here's a sample that illustrates my problem. In the .xib for the project, I have a UIImageView that is connected to the viewToMove IBOutlet. I also have a UIButton connected to the startButton IBOutlet, and I have connected its TouchUpInside action to the startButtonClicked IBAction. The TouchUpInside action works as I want it to, but the longPressGestureRecognizer skips to the end of the first animation after about half a second. When I NSLog the second animation (animateTo200) I can see that it is called twice when a long press starts the animation but only once when the button's TouchUpInside action starts the animation. - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; UILongPressGestureRecognizer *longPressRecognizer = [[UILongPressGestureRecognizer alloc] initWithTarget:self action:@selector(startButtonClicked)]; NSArray *recognizerArray = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:longPressRecognizer, nil]; [startButton setGestureRecognizers:recognizerArray]; [longPressRecognizer release]; [recognizerArray release]; } -(IBAction)startButtonClicked { if (viewToMove.center.x < 150) { [self animateTo200:@"Right to left" finished:nil context:nil]; } else { [self animateTo100:@"Right to left" finished:nil context:nil]; } } -(void)animateTo100:(NSString *)animationID finished:(NSNumber *)finished context:(void *)context { [UIView beginAnimations:@"Right to left" context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:4]; [UIView setAnimationDelegate:self]; [UIView setAnimationDidStopSelector:@selector(animateTo200:finished:context:)]; viewToMove.center = CGPointMake(100.0, 100.0); [UIView commitAnimations]; } -(void)animateTo200:(NSString *)animationID finished:(NSNumber *)finished context:(void *)context { [UIView beginAnimations:@"Left to right" context:nil]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:4]; viewToMove.center = CGPointMake(200.0, 200.0); [UIView commitAnimations]; }

  • Django automatically compress Model Field on save() and decompress when field is accessed

    - by Brian M. Hunt
    Given a Django model likeso: from django.db import models class MyModel(models.Model): textfield = models.TextField() How can one automatically compress textfield (e.g. with zlib) on save() and decompress it when the property textfield is accessed (i.e. not on load), with a workflow like this: m = MyModel() textfield = "Hello, world, how are you?" m.save() # compress textfield on save m.textfield # no decompression id = m.id() m = MyModel.get(pk=id) # textfield still compressed m.textfield # textfield decompressed I'd be inclined to think that you would overload MyModel.save, but I don't know the pattern for in-place modification of the element when saving. I also don't know the best way in Django to decompress when the field when it's accessed (overload __getattr__?). Or would a better way to do this be to have a custom field type? I'm certain I've seen an example of almost exactly this, but alas I've not been able to find it recently. Thank you for reading – and for any input you may be able to provide.

  • Reporting Services 2010 RDLC: Passing Querystring Parameters from an RDLC

    - by Brian MacKay
    I'm trying to build a simple RDLC report that shows some data, and has a 'select' link that sends the browser off to a certain url with some data in the querystring (a key). In the vs2010 report designer, I can double-click on the column, then select action, and there are a bunch of thigns that seem like they might work. But none of them do. Under 'enable as a hyperlink' I can pick 'go to url' but there aren't any parameter options to pass. I also tried 'go to report' on the off chance that I could trick it into doing what I want. Here there are parameter options, but it knows that my url is not a report and the "select" link renders as text (not clickable). Any ideas? I'm pretty sure this used to work in vs2008, and it seems like something that must be doable. But I've been pulling out my hair for several hours on this one.

  • MVC 2: Html.TextBoxFor, etc. in VB.NET 2010

    - by Brian
    Hello, I have this sample ASP.NET MVC 2.0 view in C#, bound to a strongly typed model that has a first name, last name, and email: <div> First: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(i => i.FirstName) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(i => i.FirstName, "*") %> </div> <div> Last: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(i => i.LastName) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(i => i.LastName, "*")%> </div> <div> Email: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(i => i.Email) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(i => i.Email, "*")%> </div> I converted it to VB.NET, seeing the appropriate constructs in VB.NET 10, as: <div> First: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(Function(i) i.FirstName) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(Function(i) i.FirstName, "*") %> </div> <div> Last: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(Function(i) i.LastName)%> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(Function(i) i.LastName, "*")%> </div> <div> Email: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(Function(i) i.Email)%> <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(Function(i) i.Email, "*")%> </div> No luck. Is this right, and if not, what syntax do I need to use? Again, I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2.0, this is a view bound to a strongly typed model... does MVC 2 still not support the new language constructs in .NET 2010? Thanks.

  • Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

    - by Brian Ensink
    I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. The second CSC command line has these additional arguments: /resource:"obj\Debug AutoCAD\VisualApp.g.resources" /resource:"obj\Debug AutoCAD\CAP.Visual.Properties.Resources.resources" I hate to post such a huge ugly compiler output but here are both command lines. 2>c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Csc.exe /noconfig /nowarn:1701,1702 /platform:x86 /errorreport:prompt /warn:4
