  • Missing feature in Hyper-V from Virtual PC

    - by Kevin Shyr
One thing I really miss is the ability to create shared folder between host and guest.  Virtual PC does this well, you can create Shared Folder to be used every time, or just this one.  I have read some posts on how to do this.  Some people suggest using ISO Creator to package up the files and mount the image to DVD drive, but what I need is truly a "shared" environment, so I'm currently looking into creating Virtual switch and creating an internal network between the host and guest.  Let's see how that works out. I would have loved to give Virtual SAN Manager a try, but I don't have a local Fibre Channel to set one up. I guess this might be an extension to my original post:  http://geekswithblogs.net/LifeLongTechie/archive/2011/05/05/windows-virtual-pc-vs.-hyper-v-virtual-machines-vs.-windows-virtual.aspx

  • PC noisy due to high load - why?

    - by Jinx
I just installed an ubuntu on my pc(Dell Inspiration I560SR-358, with CPU E5700 3GHz, 4G memory, and NVIDIA GeForce G310). The pc becomes noisy before that it's quiet with a windows 7 on it. How come? How to set it to be quiet again in unbuntu 10.04. One of the two cpu usage is always 100%. I think that is the reason. //re-edit Everything gets ok after I restart the computer. But the fan is still running which makes it noisy, if i switch to windows 7, it becomes quiet again.

  • Toolset agnostic build server and Silverlight projects

    - by Marko Apfel
Problem Normally I try to have my continuous integration as most a possible toolset free to ensure that no local stuff could have an impact to my build. My Silverlight app references a special compile target in a folder outside my developer tree: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So I copied the stuff from this folder to a local one and changed the call to this target in my csproj: <Import Project="..\..\..\tools\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> And now Visual Studio Conversion Wizard welcomes my with this: Solution Regardless of which line I write – this conversion comes back again and again, if the line has another form than <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So it seems that there is no simple way to change this behaviour. Workaraound I must accept, that this line must be in the csproj and to run the build the toolset must be copied to the build server at the correct location. So go to your development machine where Visual Studio is installed and copy the folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications” to your build server at the equivalent location.   Xmas wishes to Microsoft: Please provide technologies to let us developers bundle all needed stuff for a project in one developer tree. It should be possible that one checkout starts us up! No additional installations regardless whether it is a developing machine or dedicated build or continuous integration server. Silverlight is only one example, code analysis configurations could also be terrible and much more …

  • Launchpad fails to build a package for my PPA

    - by AZorin
I'm trying to build a package on Launchpad's Debian build system for PPAs but I'm having some issues with a certain package. The package I'm trying to build (zorin-xwinwrap) contains a source C file which I'm trying to get to compile and build on Launchpad's server so that it would install and work on 32 bit (i386) and 64 bit (amd64) systems. Unfortunately I keep on getting an Error code 2 with the debian/rules file and I have no clue how to fix this issue. The following link is the source package of the software I'm trying to add to my PPA: http://goo.gl/GjZvd The following link is the buildlog for the failed package on Launchpad: http://goo.gl/6A2rQ I would greatly appreciate any suggestions if anyone may have any. Thank you for your time.

  • Audio PC Software running on UBUNTU

    - by Stuart
Hi I recently built my own home studio PC. i5 CPU) 8Gb RAM, solid state drive etc. Basically the fastest PC I've ever built. I have a 32bit version of XP and all the music software I have runs on this. However I want to use all the RAM and can only do so by moving to 64bit Windows. My questions are: Will Ubuntu run my Audio software or would I need to get Linux specific Audio software? Are there any good (pro) shareware linux based multi-track audio software packages? Will VST plug-ins work through UBUNTU? Cheers, Stu.

  • Do you use Phing?

    - by Sam McAfee
Does anyone use Phing to deploy PHP applications, and if so how do you use it? We currently have a hand-written "setup" script that we run whenever we deploy a new instance of our project. We just checkout from SVN and run it. It sets some basic configuration variables, installs or reloads the database, and generates a v-host for the site instance. I have often thought that maybe we should be using Phing. I haven't used ant much, so I don't have a real sense of what Phing is supposed to do other than script the copying of files from one place to another much as our setup script does. What are some more advanced uses that you can give examples of to help me understand why we would or would not want to integrate Phing into our process.

  • Flow of packet in network

    - by user58859
I can't visualize in my mind the network traffic flow. eg. If there are 15 pc's in a LAN. When packet goes from router to local LAN, do it passes all the computers? Means did it goes to ehernet card of every computer and those computers accept the packet based on their physical address. To which pc the packet will go first? To the nearest to the router? What happen if that first pc captures that packet(though it is not for it)? What happens when a pc broadcast a message? Do it have to generate 14 packets for all the pc's or only one packet reach to all pc's? If it is one packet and captured by first pc, how other pc's can get that? I can't imagine how this traffic is exactly flows? May be my analogy is completely wrong. Can anybody explain me this? Thanks in advance.

  • How do I build mDNSResponder?

    - by Alex
I have tried checking out the mDNSResponder source from Apple's SVN host, with the thought of compiling it and tweaking it. This failed miserably. Here is the last line of the output of cd trunk SRCROOT=. make I get the same error for several tags in the SVN tree, so I'm not sure if there is something on my end wrong? The following build commands failed: mDNSResponder: CompileC mDNSResponder.build/mDNSResponder.build/Objects-normal/i386/mDNSMacOSX.o /Users/myname/Desktop/mDNSResponder/trunk/mDNSMacOSX/mDNSMacOSX.c normal i386 c com.apple.compilers.gcc.4_2 PhaseScriptExecution "Run Script" /Users/myname/Desktop/mDNSResponder/trunk/mDNSMacOSX/mDNSResponder.build/mDNSResponder.build/Script-D284BE6C0ADD80740027CCDF.sh mDNSResponder debug: CompileC "mDNSResponder.build/mDNSResponder debug.build/Objects-normal/i386/mDNSMacOSX.o" /Users/myname/Desktop/mDNSResponder/trunk/mDNSMacOSX/mDNSMacOSX.c normal i386 c com.apple.compilers.gcc.4_2 Build Some: PhaseScriptExecution "Run Script" "/Users/myname/Desktop/mDNSResponder/trunk/mDNSMacOSX/mDNSResponder.build/Development/Build Some.build/Script-FF045B6A0C7E4AA600448140.sh" (4 failures)

  • Stream internal sound from mac to pc?

    - by Shedo Surashu
I'm using a headphone connected to a PC, however, I also use a mac. I want to make it so that the internal sound, coming from the mac will also be heard over at the pc. So I want to convert the headphone to a somewhat central sound output where I hear both pc and mac's internal sounds. That includes error alerts, mp3s played on iTunes, etc. Is there an app that will let me do this? Just to clarify, the PC is running Windows XP.

  • Try out Windows Phone 7 on your PC today

    - by Matthew Guay
Anticipation has been building for the new Windows Phone 7 Series ever since Microsoft unveiled it at the Mobile World Congress in February.  Now, thanks to free developer tools, you can get a first-hand experience of the basic Windows Phone 7 Series devices on your PC. Windows Phone 7 Series represents a huge change in the mobile field for Microsoft, bringing the acclaimed Zune HD UI to an innovative phone platform.  Windows Mobile has often been criticized for being behind other Smartphone platforms, but Microsoft seeks to regain the lead with this new upcoming release.  A platform must have developers behind it to be useful, so they have released a full set of free development tools so anyone can make apps for it today.  Or, if you simply want to play with Windows Phone 7, you can use the included emulator to try out the new Metro UI.  Here’s how to do this today on your Vista or 7 computer. Please note: These tools are a Customer Technology Preview release, so only install them if you’re comfortable using pre-release software. Getting Started First, download the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP (link below), and run the installer.  This will install the Customer Technology Preview (CTP) versions of Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, Windows Phone Emulator, Silverlight for Windows Phone, and XNA 4.0 Game Studio on your computer, all of which are required and cannot be installed individually. Accept the license agreement when prompted. Click “Install Now” to install the tools you need.  The only setup customization option is where to save the files, so choose Customize if you need to do so. Setup will now automatically download and install the components you need, and will additionally download either 32 or 64 bit programs depending on your operating system. About halfway thorough the installation, you’ll be prompted to reboot your system.  Once your computer is rebooted, setup will automatically resume without further input.   When setup is finished, click “Run the Product Now” to get started. Running Windows Phone 7 on your PC Now that you’ve got the Windows Phone Developer tools installed, it’s time to get the Windows Phone emulator running.  If you clicked “Run the Product Now” when the setup finished, Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone should have already started.   If not, simply enter “visual studio” in your start menu search and select “Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone”. Now, to run the Windows Phone 7 emulator, we have to test an application.  So, even if you don’t know how to program, we can open a phone application template, and then test it to run the emulator.  First, click New Project on the left hand side of the front page. Any of the application templates would work for this, but here let’s select “Windows Phone Application”, and then click Ok. Here’s your new application template, which already contains the basic phone application framework.  This is where you’d start if you want to develop a Windows Phone app, but for now we just want to see Windows Phone 7 in action. So, to run the emulator, click Debug in the menu and then select Start Debugging. Your new application will launch inside the Windows Phone 7 Series emulator.  The default template doesn’t give us much, but it does show an example application running in Windows Phone 7.   Exploring Windows Phone 7 Click the Windows button on the emulator to go to the home screen.  Notice the Zune HD-like transition animation.  The emulator only includes Internet Explorer, your test application, and a few settings. Click the arrow on the right to see the available applications in a list. Settings lets you change the theme, regional settings, and the date and time in your emulator.  It also has an applications settings pane, but this currently isn’t populated. The Time settings shows a unique Windows Phone UI. You can return to the home screen by pressing the Windows button.  Here’s the Internet Explorer app running, with the virtual keyboard open to enter an address.  Please note that this emulator can also accept input from your keyboard, so you can enter addresses without clicking on the virtual keyboard. And here’s Google running in Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone 7 supports accelerometers, and you can simulate this in the emulator.  Click one of the rotate buttons to rotate the screen in that direction. Here’s our favorite website in Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 7 in landscape mode. All this, running right inside your Windows 7 desktop… Developer tools for Windows Phone 7 Although it may be fun to play with the Windows Phone 7 emulator, developers will be more excited to actually be able to create new and exciting apps for it.  The Windows Phone Developer Tools download includes Visual Studio Express and XNA Game Studio 4.0 which lets you create enticing games and apps for Windows Phones.  All development for Windows Phones will be in C#, Silverlight, and the XNA game framework.  Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone includes templates for these, and additionally has code samples to help you get started with development. Conclusion Many features are still not functional in this preview version, such as the search button and most of the included applications.  However, this still gives you a great way to experience firsthand the future of the Windows Phone platform.  And, for developers, this is your chance to set your mark on the Windows Phone 7 Series even before it is released to the public.  Happy playing and developing! • How do I install PyYAML into local install of Python?

    - by Daryl Spitzer
I've installed Python 2.6.4 into (a subdirectory in) my home directory on a Linux machine with Python 2.3.4 pre-installed, because I need to run some code that I've decided would require too much work to make it run on 2.3.4. (I'm not on the sudoers list for that machine.) I was hoping I could run ~/Python-2.6.4/python setup.py install (from the PyYAML directory in my home directory, where I untarred the PyYAML sources) and it would be smart enough to install it into my local Python 2.6.4 install. But it's not. (See the P.S.) Is it possible to install PyYAML into my local Python install, so that "import yaml" will work when I invoke that Python? If so, how do I do that? P.S. Here's the output when I ran ~/Python-2.6.4/python setup.py install: running install running build running build_py creating build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6 creating build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/composer.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/nodes.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/dumper.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/resolver.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/events.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/emitter.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/error.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/loader.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/cyaml.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/scanner.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/__init__.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/serializer.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/reader.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/representer.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/constructor.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/tokens.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml copying lib/yaml/parser.py -> build/lib.linux-ppc64-2.6/yaml running build_ext creating build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6 checking if libyaml is compilable gcc -pthread -fno-strict-aliasing -DNDEBUG -g -fwrapv -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -fPIC -I/home/dspitzer/Python-2.6.4/Include -I/home/dspitzer/Python-2.6.4 -c build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c -o build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.o build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:2:18: yaml.h: No such file or directory build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c: In function `main': build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:5: error: `yaml_parser_t' undeclared (first use in this function) build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:5: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:5: error: for each function it appears in.) build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:5: error: syntax error before "parser" build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:6: error: `yaml_emitter_t' undeclared (first use in this function) build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:8: warning: implicit declaration of function `yaml_parser_initialize' build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:8: error: `parser' undeclared (first use in this function) build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:9: warning: implicit declaration of function `yaml_parser_delete' build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:11: warning: implicit declaration of function `yaml_emitter_initialize' build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:11: error: `emitter' undeclared (first use in this function) build/temp.linux-ppc64-2.6/check_libyaml.c:12: warning: implicit declaration of function `yaml_emitter_delete' libyaml is not found or a compiler error: forcing --without-libyaml (if libyaml is installed correctly, you may need to specify the option --include-dirs or uncomment and modify the parameter include_dirs in setup.cfg) running install_lib creating /usr/local/lib/python2.6 error: could not create '/usr/local/lib/python2.6': Permission denied
