  • What videoconferencing platforms work best for distributed software development teams?

    - by user11347
Today I had a religious experience: I participated in a videoconference using a high quality Polycom system. This made a huge difference in communication quality -- people that I had a terrible time understanding previously now sounded like Shakespeare. Seeing a high quality video image was enormously helpful. I asked operations how much the Polycom cost and they said that it cost $20K new and $4K off eBay. So this solution doesn't work for people who work from home or who work in offices but are in groups of 3 or fewer people. My budget for a videoconferencing system is a few hundred dollars per person. Skype is not nearly good enough. And I haven't seen a consumer webcam that is good enough either. Does such a solution exist? I'm looking to collaborate both with people who are close by (in the same city but not in the same room) and far away (on different continents).

  • Which technologies will most affect Financial Services over the next decade? [on hold]

    - by opposite of you
I couldn't quite think of a proper description, so as Wikipedia puts it so beautifully: Financial services are the economic services provided by the finance industry, which encompasses a broad range of organizations that manage money, including credit unions, banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, consumer finance companies, stock brokerages, investment funds and some government sponsored enterprises. These are quite a range of industries. I've already thought about how banks specifically have gotten involved with app markets allowing users to make transfers on the go, and this goes with cloud computing, but what else could there be apart from mobile technologies and cloud computing? Or how else could they be used? I feel like I'm thinking about this wrong.. Apart from mobile computing and cloud computing, what other examples will influence the sector either positively or negatively?

  • Which mediacenter appliance

    - by Guillaume
I'm looking to buy a mediacenter appliance, but I am a bit lost by all the offers on the market. Here are the features I am looking for : at least 500Go HDD capable of playing HD (1080p) supporting a good range of video and audio codecs support for subtitles including a DVB-T input (coax) and tuner composite video input 5.1 (or 7.1) analog audio output LAN (100M or Gigabit) fileserver (SMB or NFS) remote control possibly digital output (S/PDIF, TOSLINK, or other) no need for integrated DVD player no need for wifi The Ultio Pro looks nice (http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/home-entertainment/d3fe). It just lacks a DVB-T input which is a show killer for me. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • How to sniff for wireless MAC addresses in area - My laptop got stolen

    - by Mr AJL
A few days ago my apartment got broken in, and they took all the electronics, including my $1500 laptop. We are pretty sure it's an inside job (as in someone from the same building), so I believe that the stuff is in someones apartment. Is there any tool that tells you what wireless adapters are active within range? I have my laptops MAC address, so I could use that to find out who stole it. I think it's worth a shot. Any help is appreciated thanks!

Previous information concerning my issue can be found here: Virus...? Tons of people talking. Not sure where else to ask. I heard the loud sounds and whatnot from one of the ads but nothing was harmed and other than having the life scared out of me nothing was immediately affected. Literally nothing has changed. I really don't know what to do. My PC seems fine and from what Malwarebytes and Spybot tells me none of my files have been infected with anything. • Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

    - by JohnB
Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

  • Is there a rule of thumb for RAM upgrades?

    - by Retrosaur
I'm having a hard time figuring out whether or not a certain laptop/computer's RAM can be upgraded or not. Is there a rule of thumb that determines how much max RAM one could add to a system without looking it up via external websites? A little bit of a background information: I work in computer sales at a computer electronics store, so it is virtually impossible for me to install any sort of software that would detect computer specs, and I get a lot of customers who wonder what laptop/desktop RAM upgrades usually are. Is there a certain rule that adding more RAM entails? Does it make a difference if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit machine? OS?

  • What power cord does a WD16001032 hard drive use?

    - by llcf
I have a Western Digital 160GB My Book USB external hard drive (WD16001032), but I can't find its power cord (or, at least, figure out which one it is in my box of cords). It might be that only one power cord would fit, but I'm a bit cautious since I just tried one of the cords with a router and could smell electronics burning when I used an incorrect one. What voltage/amps are needed for this drive? I can't find specs on Western Digital's site. I'm assuming this is due to it being an older drive.

  • RAID 0 disk failure, how to recover the RAID?

    - by user7985
Situation is this. A PC with 2 hard disks, in an RAID 0 Array. The electronics on one of the disks has failed. I can not find the same board for the disk (I've tried this, removed board from the OK disk, and the second, the damaged one, works fine). I've made an image with "dd" on linux on a new hard drive (same size, not same model) and now I get "Offline member" in the RAID config screen. Will I succeed to recover the data which is stored on the drives, any help, any experience with this kind of problem. And surly, I know it was stupid to put the disks in RAID 0 and store data on them :(

  • Autopostback select lists in ASP.NET MVC using jQuery

    - by rajbk
This tiny snippet of code show you how to have your select lists autopostback its containing form when the selected value changes. When the DOM is fully loaded, we get all select nodes that have an attribute of “data-autopostback” with a value of “true”. We wire up the “change” JavaScript event to all these select nodes. This event is fired as soon as the user changes their selection with the mouse.  When the event is fired, we find the closest form tag for the select node that raised the event and submit the form. $(document).ready(function () { $("select:[data-autopostback=true]").change(function () { $(this).closest("form").submit(); }); }); A select tag with autopostback enabled will look like this <select id="selCategory" name="Category" data-autopostback="true"> <option value='1'>Electronics</option> <option value='2'>Books</option> </select> The reason I am using “data-" suffix in the attribute is to be HTML5 Compliant. A custom data attribute is an attribute in no namespace whose name starts with the string "data-", has at least one character after the hyphen, is XML-compatible, and contains no characters in the range U+0041 to U+005A (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A to LATIN CAPITAL LETTER Z). The snippet can be used with any HTML page.

  • Gnome 3 freezes on logon on samsung RV 509

    - by Noufal
I have a Samsung NP-RV509 A0FIN and I tried to install GNU/Linux with gnome 3.2 on it. I tried Fedora 16, Ubuntu 11.10 and Linux Mint 12 RC, but with no success. All of these freezes upon login into gnome shell. I think it is the problem with graphics driver, so I tried xorg-edgers ppa on my last installation, ie., Linux Mint. I also tried various intel graphics packages listed on Synaptic package manager, but no success again. • The Disloyalty Card

    - by David Dorf
Let's take a break from technology for a second; please indulge me. (That's for you Erick.) A few months back, James Hoffmann reported that Gwilym Davies, the 2009 World Barista Champion, had implemented a rather unique idea for his cafe: the disloyalty card. His card lists eight nearby cafes in London that the cardholder must visit and try a coffee. After sampling all eight and collecting the required stamps, Gwilym provides a free coffee from his shop. His idea sends customers to his competitors. What does this say about Gwilym? First, it tells me he's confident in his abilities to make a mean cup of java. Second, it tells me he's truly passionate about his his trade. But was this a sound business endeavor? Obviously the risk is that one of his loyal customers might just find a better product at a competitor and not return. But the goal isn't really to strengthen his customer base -- its to strengthen the market, which will in turn provide more customers over the long run. This idea seems great for frequently purchased products like restaurants, bars, bakeries, music, and of course, cafes. Its probably not a good idea for high priced merchandise or infrequently purchased items like shoes, electronics, and housewares. Nevertheless, its a great example of thinking in reverse. Try this: Instead of telling your staff how you want customers treated, list out the ways you don't want customers treated. Why should you limit people's imagination and freedom to engage customers? Instead, give them guidelines to avoid the bad behavior, and leave them open to be creative with the positive behavior. Instead of asking the question, "how can we get more people in our stores?" try asking the inverse: "why aren't people visiting our stores?" Innovation doesn't only come from asking "why?" Often it comes from asking "why not?"

  • Geek it Up

    - by BuckWoody
I’ve run into a couple of kinds of folks in IT. Some really like technology a lot – a whole lot –and others treat it more as a job. For those of you in the second camp, you can go back to your drab, meaningless jobs – this post is for the first group. I’m a geek. Not a little bit of a geek, a really big one. I love technology, I get excited about science and electronics in general, and I read math books when I don’t have to. Yes, I have a Star Trek item or two around the house. My daughter is fluent in both Monty Python AND Serenity. I totally admit it. So if you’re like me (OK, maybe a little less geeky than that), then go for it. Put those toys in your cubicle, wear your fan shirt, but most of all, geek up your tools. No, this isn’t an April Fool’s post – I really mean it. I’ve noticed that when I get the larger monitor, better mouse, cooler keyboard, I LIKE coming to work. It’s a way to reward yourself – I’ve even found that it makes work easier if I have the kind of things I enjoy around to work with. So buy that old “clicky” IBM keyboard, get three monitors, and buy a nice headset so that you can set all of your sounds to Monty Python WAV’s. And get to work. • NEC uPD720200 USB 3.0 not working on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Jagged
I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit on a HP Envy 15 1104tx. Most stuff appears to be working fine with the exception of the two USB3 ports (USB2 port works fine). I've read a lot of articles but so far have not been able to find a solution. I've tried adding 'pci=nomsi' to '/etc/default/grub' but this made no difference. Some articles suggest booting into Windows and upgrading the firmware on the uPD720200. Any body had any experience of this? Is there a way I can checked the firmware version of the NEC uPD720200 in Linux to see if there is an update available? Any help appreciated. uname -a: Linux HP-ENVY-15-1104tx 3.2.0-26-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 14 17:49:24 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux lshw: hp-envy-15-1104tx description: Notebook • How to penetrate the QA industry after layoffs, next steps...

    - by Erik
Briefly, my background is in manual black box testing of websites and applications within the Agile/waterfall context. Over the past four years I was a member of two web development firms' small QA teams dedicated to testing the deployment of websites for national/international non profits, governmental organizations, and for profit business, to name a few: -Brookings Institution -Senate -Tyco Electronics -Blue Cross/Blue Shield -National Geographic -Discover Channel I have a very strong understanding of the: -SDLC -STLC of bugs and website deployment/development -Use Case & Test Case development In March of this year, my last firm downsized and lost my job as a QA tester. I have been networking and doing a very detailed job search, but have had a very difficult time getting my next job within the QA industry, even with my background as a manual black box QA tester in the website development context. My direct question to all of you: What are some ways I can be more competitive and get hired? Options that could get me competitive: Should I go back to school and learn some more 'hard' skills in website development and client side technologies, e.g.: -HTML -CSS -JavaScript Learn programming: -PHP -C# -Ruby -SQL -Python -Perl -?? Get Certified as a QA Tester, there are a countless numbers of programs to become a Certified Tester. Most, if not all jobs, being advertised now require Automated Testing experience, in: -QTP -Loadrunner -Selenium -ETC. Should I learn, Automated testing skills, via a paid course, or teach myself? --Learn scripting languages to understand the automated testing process better? Become a Certified "Project Management Professional" (PMP) to prove to hiring managers that I 'get' the project development life cycle? At the end of the day I need to be competitive and get hired as a QA tester and want to build upon my skills within the QA web development field. How should I do this, without reinventing the wheel? Any help in this regard would be fabulous. Thanks! .erik

  • Ask the Readers: Social Websites – Browser-Based Interface versus Desktop Clients

    - by Asian Angel
Most people have a favorite social website that they are active on each day, but have different methods for interacting with their friends there. This week we would like to know if you prefer using a browser-based interface or a desktop client to interact with your chosen social services. Photo by Asian Angel. Social services can be a lot of fun unless your method of access comes with more frustrations than perks. Perhaps your favorite social service has changed the layout or the website itself is just too busy or full of “junk” for your tastes. Then there are the times when the website may experience problems and fail to work smoothly. Latest Features How-To Geek ETC What Can Super Mario Teach Us About Graphics Technology? • Converting hierarchial data into an unordered list Programmatically using asp.net/C#

    hi everyone, I've data which looks something like this. | id | name | depth | itemId | +-----+----------------------+-------+-------+ | 0 | ELECTRONICS | 0 | NULL | | 1 | TELEVISIONS | 1 | NULL | | 400 | Tube | 2 | NULL | | 432 | LCD | 3 | 1653 | | 422 | Plasma | 3 | 1633 | | 416 | Portable electronics | 3 | 1595 | | 401 | MP3 Player | 3 | 1249 | | 191 | Flash | 2 | NULL | | 555 | CD Players | 3 | 2198 | | 407 | 2 Way Radio | 3 | 1284 | | 388 | I've a problem with | 3 | 1181 | | 302 | What is your bill pa | 3 | 543 | | 203 | Where can I find my | 3 | 299 | | 201 | I would like to make | 3 | 288 | | 200 | Do you have any job | 3 | 284 | | 192 | About Us | 3 | NULL | | 199 | What can you tell me | 4 | 280 | | 198 | Do you help pr | 4 | 276 | | 197 | would someone help co| 4 | 272 | | 196 | can you help ch | 4 | 268 | | 195 | What awards has Veri | 4 | 264 | | 194 | What's the latest ne | 4 | 260 | | 193 | Can you tell me more | 4 | 256 | | 180 | Site Help | 2 | NULL | | 421 | Where are the | 3 | 1629 | | 311 | How can I access My | 3 | 557 | | 280 | Why isn't the page a | 3 | 512 | To convert the above data into unordered list based on depth, I'm using the following code int lastDepth = -1; int numUL = 0; StringBuilder output = new StringBuilder(); foreach (DataRow row in ds.Tables[0].Rows) { int currentDepth = Convert.ToInt32(row["Depth"]); if (lastDepth < currentDepth) { if (currentDepth == 0) { output.Append("<ul class=\"simpleTree\">"); output.AppendFormat("<li class=\"root\"><span><a href=\"#\" title=\"root\">root</a></span><ul><li class=\"open\" ><span><a href=\"#\" title={1}>{0}</a></span>", row["name"],row["id"]); } else { output.Append("<ul>"); if(currentDepth==1) output.AppendFormat("<li><span>{0}</span>", row["name"]); else output.AppendFormat("<li><span class=\"text\"><a href=\"#\" title={1}>{0}</a></span>", row["name"], row["id"]); } numUL++; } else if (lastDepth > currentDepth) { output.Append("</li></ul></li>"); if(currentDepth==1) output.AppendFormat("<li><span>{0}</span>", row["name"]); else output.AppendFormat("<li><span class=\"text\"><a href=\"#\" title={1}>{0}</a></span>", row["name"], row["id"]); numUL--; } else if (lastDepth > -1) { output.Append("</li>"); output.AppendFormat("<li><span class=\"text\"><a href=\"#\" title={1}>{0}</a></span>", row["name"],row["id"]); } lastDepth = currentDepth; } for (int i = 1; i <= numUL+1; i++) { output.Append("</li></ul>"); } myliteral.text=output.ToString(); But the resulting unordered list doesnt seem to be forming properly(using which i am constructing a tree).For example "Site Help" with id '180' is supposed to appear as a direct child of "Televisions" with id '1',is appearing as a direct child of 'Flash' with id '191' using my code.so in addition to considering depth,I've decided to consider itemid as well in order to get the treeview properly.Those rows of the table with itemId not equal to null are not supposed to have a child node(i.e.,they are the leaf nodes in the tree) and all the other nodes can have child nodes. Please could someone help me in constructing a proper unordered list based on my depth,itemid coulumns? Thanks.

• Make Efficient Use of Tab Bar Space by Customizing Tab Width in Firefox

    - by Asian Angel
Does your Tab Bar fill up too quickly while browsing with Firefox? Then get ready to make efficient use of Tab Bar space and reduce the amount of tab scrolling with the Custom Tab Width extension for Firefox. The default settings for the extension are 100/250 and we set ours for 50/100. As you can see in the screenshot above our tabs took up a lot less room with just one quick adjustment. Simply choose the desired minimum and maximum widths, click OK, and enjoy the extra room on the Tab Bar! Note: Works with Firefox 4.0b3 – 4.0.* Install the Custom Tab Width Extension (Mozilla Add-ons) [via Lifehacker] Latest Features How-To Geek ETC What Can Super Mario Teach Us About Graphics Technology?
