  • Silverlight debugging, no list element view

    When I'm debugging my Silverlight Appliction and I'm using a list internally I cannot hover over the list and see the items inside the list. I just see the RAW view of the list. If I want to see the items I have to write my own code which is tedious. Is this something normal to Silverlight? I DO have the correct list view when debugging in normal Console/WPF/... applications. Example: Silverlight: (link: click) See how there is no 'list view in the first example?   • Visual Studio ignore try catch - debug only

    I think error handling is a good idea. :) When debugging it can get in the way - especially with nice user friendly messages. In VB6 I could just check a box for the compiler to ignore my error handling. I found the dialog that allows me to do something similar in VS, but it's about 10,000 check boxes instead of one - which is too many to change every time I want a production compilation. Is there a way to set VS up so when I am in debugging mode I get one set of conditions and when I am in production I get another? ...or is there just another method to handling errors and debugging more efficiently?     People use gdb on and off for debugging, of course there are lots of other debugging tools across the varied OSes, with and without GUI and, maybe other fancy IDE features. I would like to know what useful gdb scripts you have written and liked. While, I do not mean a dump of commands in a something.gdb file that you source to pull out a bunch of data, if that made your day, go ahead and talk about it. Lets think conditional processing, control loops and functions written for more elegant and refined programming to debug and, maybe even for whitebox testing Things get interesting when you start debugging remote systems (say, over a serial/ethernet interface) And, what if the target is a multi-processor (and, multithreaded) system Let me put a simple case as an example... Say, A script that traversed serially over entries to locate a bad entry in a large hash-table that is implemented on an embedded platform. That helped me debug a broken hash-table once.

  • Python: Getting the attribute name that the created object will be given

    Before I ask this, do note: I want this for debugging purposes. I know that this is going to be some bad black magic, but I want to use it just during debugging so I could identify my objects more easily. It's like this. I have some object from class A that creates a few B instances as attributes: class A(object): def __init__(self) self.vanilla_b = B() self.chocolate_b = B() class B(object): def __init__(self): # ... What I want is that in B.__init__, it will figure out the "vanilla_b" or whatever attribute name it was given, and then put that as the .name attribute to this specific B. Then in debugging when I see some B object floating around, I could know which one it is. Is there any way to do this?

  • How to make pdb recognize that the source has changed between runs?

    From what I can tell, pdb does not recognize when the source code has changed between "runs". That is, if I'm debugging, notice a bug, fix that bug, and rerun the program in pdb (i.e. without exiting pdb), pdb will not recompile the code. I'll still be debugging the old version of the code, even if pdb lists the new source code. So, does pdb not update the compiled code as the source changes? If not, is there a way to make it do so? I'd like to be able to stay in a single pdb session in order to keep my breakpoints and such. FWIW, gdb will notice when the program it's debugging changes underneath it, though only on a restart of that program. This is the behavior I'm trying to replicate in pdb.

    Hi I am running iis7 on my windows machine for testing purposes. Now I need to have access to the debugger so when something happens I can walk through it. Yet when I put debug lines on my site nothing happens. So I am guessing I need more stuff setup to make debugging to work. Everything is on the same machine. I have iis 7 on the same machine setup and I have Visual studios setup on my machine.

    For debugging purposes, I need a way to see all HTTP traffic between our Tomcat installation and the test clients. How can I configure Tomcat to trace all HTTP traffic (and not just the headers)? We tried to sniff the traffic using Wireshark, but since the server and the clients are on the same Windows machine it proved problematic, due to the traffic being in localhost.

  • Visual Studio not auto-building when I press the debug button

    Hi I'm writing code in Visual Studio but whenever I want to test the application and press the green arrow for "Start debugging", Visual Studio does not automatically recompile the active solution for me and I have to manually build the solution then debug it. Visual Studio used to automatically build before debug and I want this back as contantly having to manually build is a serious pain. Thanks

I am aware of the SysInternals tools and others mentioned below, but maybe I am not harnessing their power properly. Someone else in the TechNet forum I mentioned had a similar issue. Again, I have lots of data, I am not sure how to properly interpret it. ORIGINAL POST: So I tried the venerable Technet Forums to solve this isse. In short, the Windows Security dialog has no place to put credentials, rendering pretty much useless. This happens to apply for a whole bunch of our intranet websites, and only a select number of users with a few laptops have this problem. It ends up looking like this. Things I have tried so far: Disabling local Group Policy (not domain connected) Disabling local Security Policy Resetting IE settings A few system restores Re-registering a bunch of IE DLL's and all other steps here Reinstalling IE8 (dism /online /disable-feature /featurename:"internet-explorer-optional-x86, reboot, dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:"internet-explorer-optional-x86, and reboot) And SFC scan, which found nothing Still, nothing.     I am attempting to get Prosody authenticating with its auth_pam module. It is configured to use the pam service name xmpp. The pam.d/xmpp file is copied straight from the one configured for dovecot (originally taken from, I think, dovecot's documentation), which is known to be working: # cat /etc/pam.d/xmpp auth required pam_unix.so nullok debug account required pam_unix.so debug Logging in with dovecot works wonderfully.   • Simple recursive DNS resolver for debugging (app or VM)

    I have an issue which I believe is caused by incorrect DNS queries (doubled subdomains like _record.host.subdomain.tld.subdomain.tld) when querying for SRV records. So I need to an alternate DNS server with heavy logging so I can see every query (especially stupid ones), acting as a recursive resolver with the ability create records which override real DNS records so I can not only find the records it's (wrongly) looking for, but populate those records as well. I know I could install a DNS server on yet another linux box, but I feel like this is the sort of thing that someone may already setup a simple python script or single use vm just for this purpose.

  • Debugging Samba/CUPS printer sharing with Windows

    I've got a HP Deskjet hooked up to a Slackware 12.2 box. I've got CUPS set up and can print a test page from the box just fine. I've also got Samba set up and have a couple file shares that work fine. I'm trying to share that HP Deskjet out via Samba, but I can't get it to show up in any Windows system. I see the server and its file shares in Windows networking, but when I open the Printers, no printer shows up. Running net view \\servername from the command line lists the file shares, but no printers. Here's the pertinent part of my smb.conf, if that helps: [global] workgroup = HOMENET security = share hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. load printers = yes printcap name = cups printing = cups log file = /var/log/samba.%m max log size = 50 [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no public = yes writable = no printable = yes guest only = yes Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking for potential causes? Update: Running testparm shows no errors.   • Apache debugging: where to find error logs?

    I'm new to Apache and web serving generally, so apologies if this is a very stupid question. I want to configure a new sub-domain on a working site and install a forum there. I'm using a Debian server that already has Apache, mod_wsgi and a bunch of virtual hosts successfully running on it. I first installed my forum app (Django's OSQA). Following the OSQA instructions, I then created an Apache config file that specified ServerName as the new sub-domain. I also created a .wsgi file for the app, and pointed WSGIScriptAlias at it. I then restarted Apache. However, when I go to the new sub-domain, I get a 404 error message. Two questions: Is there a step missing above? Or is simply creating a new Apache config file in sites-available enough to 'tell' Apache about a new sub-domain? If there's something else going wrong, how can I debug it? The ErrorLog and CustomLog specified in the config file are both blank. apache2.conf, which I guess is Apache-wide configuration, specifies ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error.log, but this is yet another blank file.

Given a LAN, for example, where users are able to consistently ping an outside server, but any data intensive connections are flaky; how would you begin solving the network issues? I imagine issues like congestion, bandwidth constraints, throughput constraints, etc. are all factors, but I don't know how to diagnose those issues. I'm especially interested in LAN environments (rather than WAN)

  • Debugging "clogged" TCP connections

    I'm having trouble with an internet connection that seems to randomly "freeze" arbitrary tcp connections. The connections stay established, but no data is coming through. When this happens, netstat still shows the connection status as ESTABLISHED on both the local computer: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name Timer tcp 0 53 192.168.0.10:41129 173.255.235.238:143 ESTABLISHED 8219/gnutls-cli on (79.31/13/0) ..and the remote server: Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name Timer tcp 0 0 173.255.235.238:143 68.5.174.98:41129 ESTABLISHED 5303/imapd off (0.00/0/0) However, it seems that no data at all is transferred. If I run strace on the local and remote process, both just show a repeating sequence of select calls (with different fds of course), e.g. select(6, [0 5], NULL, NULL, {0, 50000}) = 0 (Timeout) select(6, [0 5], NULL, NULL, {0, 50000}) = 0 (Timeout) select(6, [0 5], NULL, NULL, {0, 50000}) = 0 (Timeout) The internet connection overall does not seem affected, I can still establish new connections to the same service on the same server without any problems. However, the affected local applications seem to be unaware of the problem and just hang. When I look at a packet capture of this connection on the client side, the last thing that happens is that the client transmits some data, then nothing happens for about 1100 seconds, and then several TCP Retransmission requests go out, with intervals increasing from 4 seconds to 130 seconds. No activity is captured after that. After about 10 minutes, the connection on the remote end disappears from the netstat (I wasn't able to catch any intermediate state), but still stays ESTABLISHED on the local end. Finally, after some more minutes, the local application aborts with a timeout and disappears from the local netstat output as well. Does anyone have a suggestion of how I could debug this further to find out where the problem lies and how to fix it? Additionaly and/or as a temporary workaround: is is there some way to globally reduce the timeout on client and/or server to reduce the time before the local application aborts?

  • Debugging a Drobo that chokes Windows 7x64 When Plugged In

    I've had a love hate relationship with my Drobo for a long time. After two years of using it on a Linux box, I moved it over to a Windows 7 machine where it seemed to work just fine for a long time, but it was under very light usage. Mainly backups that never actually happened. Recently I began using it for additional backup services (through CrashPlan, which is great). This means the Drobo gets a lot more usage. Also it means that something interesting happens, the Drobo can choke my system on startup. Here's what I mean: Start computer without Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard services disabled: 105s Start computer with Drobo plugged in Crashplan disabled, Drobo Dashboard enabled: 250s (and 1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard disabled: 250s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, Crashplan and Drobo Dashboard enabled: 300s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) If I yank the USB plug on the Drobo the CPU usage goes down to nothing very quickly. The slow startup in the fourth scenario is because CrashPlan is trying desperately to load stuff up on the H: drive before it gives up, so I've disabled it for the time being. So here's my question: What the heck is going on when I plug the drobo in? I've fired up Process Explorer and see that the System process is hogging the CPU, specifically it's an ntoskrnl.exe/KdPollBreakIn thread that's going ape. Is this something that's wrong with Drobo? Windows? Any idea on how to find out? If it matters, here's tech info: Athlon 64x2 4400, 2GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate, Drobo USB (2x1TB, 2x320GB)

  • Software Diagnostics Tool recommendations for Debugging a Windows 8 freeze

    I've had my HP Pavillion dv6 laptop since last November - and it has had 8GB RAM and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD installed since the start. I use it for software development and it's had a Windows 8 RTM installation since early September. Yesterday I had to give a presentation at a customer site - so used Powerpoint for the first time since installing Win8... since that point my machine has 'frozen' every 2 hours or so after startup. There doesn't seem to be any easy to see reason behind the freeze - the system just freezes, even if I have left it idle with just a desktop there. My immediate suspicion is that the SSD is the mostly likely cause of the problem. I've looked at some of the questions on here - e.g. How do I troubleshoot hardware issues related to a computer freeze/crash? - but don't really want to start taking my laptop apart. Another suspicion is that this might be related to the WiFi adapter (Broadcom 802.11n) since I have noticed that this doesn't seem to play perfectly with things like Hyper-V in Win8. Can anyone recommend any software diagnostic tools that I can run in order to evaluate the health of the SSD or of other parts of the system? Thanks Stuart P.S. I doubt Powerpoint is the cause of this, but I may use it as an excuse never to use it again... More realistically perhaps something got damaged during travel to the customer site?
