• What is the "default" software license?

  If I release some code and binaries, but I don't include any license at all with it, what are the legal terms that apply by default (in the US, where I am). I know that I automatically have copyright without doing anything, but what restrictions are there on it? If I upload my code to github and announce it as a free download / contribute at will, then are people allowed to modify and close source my work? I haven't said that they cannot, as a GPL would, but I don't feel that it would by default be acceptable to steal my work either. So what can and cannot people do with code that is freely available, but has absolutely no licensing terms attached? By the way, I know that it would be a good idea for me to pick a license and apply it to my code soon, but I'm still curious about this. Edit Thanks! So it looks like the consensus is that it starts out very restricted, and then my actions imply any further rights. If I just put software on my website with no security, it would be an infringement to download it. If I post a link to that download on a forum, then that would implicitly give permission to use it for free, but not distribute it or its derivatives (but you can modify it for your own use). If I put it on GitHub, then it is conveyed as FOSS. Again, this is probably not codified exactly in law but may be enough to be defensible in court. It's still a good idea to post a complete license to be safe.

• Monitoring host and app parameters in real-time

  I have a bunch of VMs that I need to monitor in real-time. For all nodes I need to watch host parameters like load, network usage and free memory; and for some I need app-specific metrics too, like redis (some vars from the output of INFO command) and nginx (like requests/sec, avg. request time). Ideally I'd also like to track some parameters from the custom apps that run on these node too. These parameters should get tracked as a bunch of line charts on a dashboard. I checked out graphite and it looks suitable (although the UX and aesthetics looks like it needs some love). But setting up and maintaining graphite looks to be a pain, esp. since we don't have a full-time person just for this. Are there any alternatives? Or at least something that is simpler to setup and will scale? Reasonable paid services are also ok.

  Since the Chromium PPA is no longer maintained, for those of us preferring to use chromium over chrome, we have two options: Build and Install from Source Download either 'beta' or daily builds (in a zip file) Unfortunately for me, option 1 is overly complicated. I know how to compile most any other applications in Ubuntu but I've never been able to get chromium to build correctly. I am currently using option 2. In Chromium I have the Chromium Updater installed (http://goo.gl/ffAMy). This gives me quick access to the most recent 64bit versions. Once downloaded, I install to /home/myuser/opt/chrome-linux. From this directory I can run the chrome binary. It works perfectly except for the fact that I cannot get it to act as my default browser. I've tried, as root, installing the binary in /opt/chrome-linux/ with a symbolic link to the 'chrome' binary in /usr/bin. Unfortunately, this doesn't work as a non root user. So my question is - How do I properly install a downloaded chromium zip build so tht it's listed as an option for the default browser?

• Changing the Default Windows Phone 7 Deployment Target In Visual Studio 2010

  After you download and install the January 2011 Windows Phone update, you will notice one annoying thing. The default deployment target for Windows Phone Projects in Visual Studio changes to Windows Phone 7 Device. Before the update, it defaulted to the Emulator. I found this extremely annoying as I’m more than likely going to test with the emulator before putting it on my actual device. Now to make things fair, Microsoft told you they were going to switch the default and even provided a solution, but you will have to check a tiny paragraph in the release notes. The good news is that its very easy to do: Simply navigate out to : %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Phone Tools\CoreCon See the folder named, “10.0”? Go ahead and delete it. Now, the folder will be completely empty and if you fire up Visual Studio 2010 you will see we are now defaulting to the Emulator again. In my opinion, this should have been left at Emulator. • Ubuntu 12.04 - default Radeon driver does not work at all

  I've recently upgraded to 12.04 LTS and I have an ATI Radeon HD5670. I've heard that the open source 'Radeon' driver is used by default. However, it wasn't showing anything for me. What I did was I added the 'nomodeset' option to boot up and install fglrx. But it didn't work well for me as it introduced a lot of problems (freezes/glitches). So I removed/purged fglrx and am planning to use the open source drivers instead. So my question is this: Why is my default Radeon driver not working? Is anyone having a similar issue? I've also tried using the ubuntu-x-swat driver by running the ff commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update But the result was the same as the Radeon driver. Nothing shows up on system boot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! • VS2012 Coded UI Test closes browser by default

  *** Thanks to Steve St. Jean for asking this question and Shubhra Maji for answering this question on the ALM champs list *** 01 – Introduction The default behaviour of coded UI tests running in an Internet Explorer browser has changed between MTM 2010 and MTM 2012. When running a Coded UI test recorded in MTM 2012 or VS 2012 at the end of the test execution the instance of the browser is closed by default. 02 – Description Let’s take an example. As you can see the CloseDinnerNowWeb() method is commented out.  In VS 2010, upon running this test the browser would be left open after the test execution completes. In VS 2012 RTM the behaviour has changed. At the end of the test run, the IE window is closed even though there is no command from the test to do so. In the example below when the test runs, it opens 2 IE windows to the website. When the test run completes both the windows are closed, even though there is no command in the test to close the window. 03 – How to change the CUIT behaviour not to close the IE window after test execution? This change to this functionality in VS 2012 is by design. It is however possible to rollback the behaviour to how it originally was in VS 2010 i.e. the IE window will not close after the test execution unless otherwise commanded by the test to do so.   In Objective-C, there are several methods like initWithContentsOfFile:encoding:error: where one passes in a reference to an NSError object for the error: parameter. In this example, the value of the NSError object passed in can change based on what goes on at runtime when the method is being called and whether the body of the method was executed in a certain way successfully. In a way I think of this NSError object as sort of like a second return value from the method, and only differs from an object anObject in the statement return anObject; in that when this statement is called, execution leaves the method. So my question is, not only in the context of error handling in Objective-C, but in general, when should one use an "out" parameter in place of returning said value in a return statement?

  Replaceable parameter syntax for the console object in C#. I am taking the O'Reilly C# Course 1 and it is asking for a replaceable parameter syntax and it is not very clear on what that means. Currently I used this: double trouble = 99999.0009; double bubble = 11111.0001; Console.WriteLine(trouble * bubble); Am I missing the meaning of replaceable parameter syntax? Can someone provide an example for what I am looking for? Original question for the quiz: "Create two variables, both doubles, assign them numbers greater than 10,000, and include a decimal component. Output the result of multiplying the numbers together, but use replaceable parameter syntax of the Console object, and multiply the numbers within the call to the Console.WriteLine() method."

• Optimization of time-varying parameters

  I need to find an optimal set of "n" parameter values that minimize an objective function (a 2-hr simulation of a system). I have looked at genetic algorithm and simulated annealing methods, but was wondering if there are any better algorithms and guidance on their merits and limitations. With the above optimization methods I can find the optimal parameter values that hold true for the entire simulation duration. Incase, I want to find the optimal "time varying" parameter values (parameter values change with time during the 2-hr simulation), are there any methods/ideas other than making each time varying parameter value a variable to optimize? Any thoughts?

• Should I have link rel=next & prev on URLs which have query variables?

  For example, I have link rel prev & next set up on these pages of products: site.com?page=2 site.com?page=3 (this is my preferred structure by the way and I'm trying to get all the ugly URLs which are littered with query variables deindexed as they are causing duplicate content). So the above URLs are fine but once a filter to narrow product results is selected, like "price", the URL shows like this: site.com?price[1000-1499]=on site.com?page=2&price[1000-1499]=on As of right now, I am having the link rel prev & next dynamically added to the header of these pages but since I am working on getting these query variable URLs pages deindexed, I am wondering if I should get rid of it on these pages? Any thoughts?

  Is there a tutorial on using LUA in Kobold2d? I want to know if its possible to use it to control the game behavior (like max speed decrease of timer, and bonus points) by uploading a new script to the app. I found this link in the FAQ: http://www.kobold2d.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=917888 but it does not mention if I can replace the lua script from within the game, and reload it, is that possible? • URL parameter names being changed by user agents

  In reviewing one of our site's web logs I'm seeing instances where we are returning a 404 to requests because we're expecting an id parameter to be sent, but instead we're seeing a di parameter. The resource in question is an image but which image file actually gets served is dependent on the id parameter. The expected url is something like http://images.mysite.com/photo.gif?id=123&width=200&height=300 What I'm seeing in the logs is requests for http://images.mysite.com/photo.gif?di=123&width=200&height=300 The only case where we are seeing this on the id parameter. It seems unlikely that this is due to a server side or JavaScript bug since it seems to be only effecting a small percentage of our traffic. We are seeing this across a wide variety of user agents (both mobile and desktop) and IPs. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a browser plugin or other software you're aware of that could be causing this, and if so is there a good way to work around the issue?

• tomcat processParameters complains about "invalid chunk ignored"

  I am hosting a software system running under tomcat for quite a number of customers. Some of these send invalid URLs as request. These URLs may contain "&=" or "&&", which is not within the http specs. Now my tomcat complains about the following: "08.09.2010 12:36:04 org.apache.tomcat.util.http.Parameters processParameters WARNING: Parameters: Invalid chunk '' ignored." It is no problem, as is doesn't affect the operation in any way. Only problem ist that the tomcat/logs/catalina.out is growing with every single request. In the net you can find suggestions like: - Fix your URLs (which I can't, as it is the customers who send them) - Raise tomcats log level to ERROR (which I don't want to do, as it would suppress INFO like "INFO: Reloading context [/ContextName]" and other stuff you want to know. - Redirect the log to the application log (which won't solve the problem, as the message will flood just another log) Does anyone know how to solve the problem at its ROOT, which means: Tell tomcat not to complain about invalid request parameters any longer

• VS2010, MSDeploy and declaration of parameters

  Hi I'm trying to deploy an ASP.NET MVC 2 app using MSDeploy. I use VS2010 to generate the package as a ZIP. Inside that ZIP is a parameters.xml file that declares the parameters that I can set. I want to be able to set more parameters, using the auto-generated deploy.cmd file like this: MySite.deploy.cmd "-setParam:name='IIS Web Application Name',value=MySite" "-setParam:name=IisVirtualDirectoryPhysicalPath,value=C:\inetpub\MySite" "-setParam:name=httpBinding,value=*:80:www.mysite.dk" That works fine, except for the httpBinding param. That is because that parameter is not declared inside the parameters.xml file that is added to the ZIP container. I could go and add that parameter declaration manually, but isn't there a way to do it from the command line and have it declare parameters I have in another XML file?

  Hello, I'm building some kind of proxy. When I call some url in a rack application, I forward that request to an other url. The request I forward is a POST with a file and some parameters. I want to add more parameters. But the file can be quite big. So I send it with Net::HTTP#body_stream instead of Net::HTTP#body. I get my request as a Rack::Request object and I create my Net::HTTP object with that. req = Net::HTTP::Post.new(request.path_info) req.body_stream = request.body req.content_type = request.content_type req.content_length = request.content_length http = Net::HTTP.new(@host, @port) res = http.request(req) I've tried several ways to add the proxy's parameters. But it seems nothing in Net::HTTP allows to add parameters to a body_stream request, only to a body one. Is there a simpler way to proxy a rack request like that ? Or a clean way to add my parameters to my request ?

  Hi I have a problem with the folowwing piece of code. I am passing a parameter (List) to a methods executing the following code. When it executes sql throws an error saying that the proc expects a parameter that was not provided. I know this error and understand it, and when stepping through the code I can see that the cmdExecuteReader object has a collection of parameters, with the correct naame and value. • Java SOAP WSDL 1.1 message sending all the parameters (even future ones)

  I have to communicate with a SOAP Web Service defined in a WSDL 1.1. All the parameters are optional in the WSDL like: <xsd:element name="Submitter" type="xsd:string"/> but if I do not send them I get an error because the parameter was not sent, so instead I have to send an empty string for any parameter I do not intent to send. So instead of not sending the element I have to send: <Submitter></Submitter> The problem is that the WebService publisher does not have any problem adding new parameters at any point in time but I must sent at least an empty string for all the parameters. How may I call this WebService in Java so every time I call the WebService the WSDL is read so that all the parameters are sent having the parameters I care for are actually filled with the data I provide? I am currently using Apache CXF but I am open to anything to solve this problem.

  Hi, How do I change the default screensaver in Mac OS X using shell. I am writing a script to customize computers that I need to distribute. In particular I would like them all to have the same default screensaver. How could I change this in a script? So far I have done the following: I have a com.apple.screensaver.default.plist file with the screensaver settings I want in it, and in the script I copy it to /Users/guest/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.${UUID}.plist where UUID is the relevant value. I have modified /System/Library/Frameworks/Screensaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist to have the screensaver I want as the default settings. But when I open Screensaver settings in System Preferences after running the script, the default screensaver is Flurry! What can I do to make this work? Thanks, ChilisWorld

• Truecrypt or default Disk Utility on Mac?

  Windows by default doesn't come with a password protect folder option (other that Win7 ultimate), so I used to swear by Truecrypt which was great. But I've read in a couple of places that Mac OS X by default has a way of protecting folders using the Default Disk Utility. So my question is which is better, using TrueCrypt on the Mac or just sticking with the default Disk Utils app? Can somebody let me know the advantages of one over the other? A summary from the very helpful answers below: if you're looking for cross-platform usage Truecrypt is the obvious tool of choice if you're looking for convenience, and intend to stick only to the Mac platform, use the default Disk Utils app.

• Trixbox CentOS Default GW Problem (Multi-homed server)

  I'm having an issue with a CentOS trixbox server which is dual-homed (one private facing NIC [eth1], one internet-facing NIC [eth0]). I can't seem to get the default gateway to set properly to our ISP's GW via eth0. I've modified the /etc/sysconfig/network to contain both a GATEWAY & GATEWAYDEV line and removed the GATEWAY line from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 (as well as /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0). No default GW shows up in the routing table unless it's specified in the ifcfg-eth1 file (which both the wrong interface and wrong gateway IP), otherwise, the routing table simply does not contain a default gateway..any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! EDIT Just realized when attempting to add the default gateway manually using the route add command, I receive an error stating: SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable I know this error can occur when your default gateway and interface IP address are not on the same subnet..in this case, my public IP address of eth0 is a /29.
