  • Scientific Data processing (Graph comparison and interpretation)

    Hi stackoverflow friends, I'm trying to write a program to automate one of my more boring and repetitive work tasks. I have some programming experience but none with processing or interpreting large volumes of data so I am seeking your advice (both suggestions of techniques to try and also things to read to learn more about doing this stuff). I have a piece of equipment that monitors an experiment by taking repeated samples and displays the readings on its screen as a graph. The input of experiment can be altered and one of these changes should produce a change in a section of the graph which I currently identify by eye and is what I'm looking for in the experiment. I want to automate it so that a computer looks at a set of results and spots the experiment input that causes the change. I can already extract the results from the machine. Currently they results for a run are in the form of an integer array with the index being the sample number and the corresponding value being the measurement. The overall shape of the graph will be similar for each experiment run. The change I'm looking for will be roughly the same and will occur in approximately the same place every time for the correct experiment input. Unfortunately there are a few gotchas that make this problem more difficult. There is some noise in the measuring process which mean there is some random variation in the measured values between different runs. Although the overall shape of the graph remains the same. The time the experiment takes varies slightly each run causing two effects. First, the a whole graph may be shifted slightly on the x axis relative to another run's graph. Second, individual features may appear slightly wider or narrower in different runs. In both these cases the variation isn't particularly large and you can assume that the only non random variation is caused by the correct input being found. Thank you for your time, Pinky

  • Why does Facebook iOS dialog for feed publish disappear after login?

    I'm trying to use the Facebook iOS "feed" dialog call to allow my app's user to share something on their Facebook wall. When the facebook app is not installed, it attempts to let them authenticate within the app (presumably using a web view). The issue is that this dialog just disappears once they authenticate. I was expecting the web view to return to the "feed" sharing view. How do I detect that they authenticated so that I can re-open the feed dialog? I've added fbDidLogin to my app delegate, but it's not being called. (I wasn't sure if this would normally be called or not, but I read several people recommending this.)   • How to get the Facebook iFrame Tab url (including parameters) from within the app?

    I think there are a few similar questions that seem to suggest using app_data in the signed request (http://developers.facebook.com/docs/authentication/signed_request/) but I'm not sure if it will be possible to do what I am trying to achieve with it as I've never used it before. If I have my Facebook 'Tab' Url as follows: http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAGE_TITLE/PAGE_ID?sk=app_APP_ID What I want to do is add an extra parameter on the end as follows: &WT.mc_id=email-uk-8014 The reason for this is for tracking purposes and links will be sent out of the form http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAGE_TITLE/PAGE_ID?sk=app_APP_ID&WT.mc_id=email-uk-8014 and the extra parameter will allow us to track the campaign id. As you can see I have no way of knowing the value of the parameter beforehand as it depends on the link clicked by the user so is it possible to somehow get the value of the WT.mc_id parameter inside my iframe app?

(I am the page creator/admin) Please don't just give an answer "add the box to the page". Cause I really don't know how. Also, it seems that putting $facebook-api_client-profile_setFBML and $facebook-api_client-profile_setInfo for the application won't provide a way for the page to add the box.     There's an outlook plugin called Xobni that has a really cool feature, if a contact has an email address, it will fetch that contact's profile picture and display it. Their FAQ states the following: Xobni sends an encrypted email address to Facebook to retrieve the Facebook profile for the person who is currently being viewed in the Xobni sidebar. Your own Facebook profile is never altered by Xobni, and all Facebook privacy settings are strictly followed when viewing other profiles. I'd like to duplicate this functionality. However, I can't figure out which API call they're using. I'm assuming when they say "encrypted email address" that's laymen's terms for the email hash. Once a username is derived, the graph api looks ideal for actually fetching the image, but I'm having trouble going from email hash to profile ID.

  • What are the potential problems with exposing the Facebook API secret?

    I'm writing a little web utility that posts status updates to Twitter and/or Facebook. That involved creating 'applications' with both those services in order to get API keys and 'secrets'. My question is how protected I really need to keep those secrets -- in order for this to work at all, you seem to need the secret to interact with the authentication part of the service to grant the app access to your account and/or grant it permission to post updates on your behalf. Facebook's documentation says to protect the secret, but at least one other Facebook utility distributes the API key and secret in the source. It's important to note: this isn't your standard Facebook 'application' that runs within the context of Facebook, nor is it a standard "desktop"-style compiled app -- it's a web-based application intended to be run on your own web server. The audience for this is probably small and somewhat more sophisticated than average -- so, one technical alternative would be to require people to obtain their own API key and secret to use the app. That seems like a lot of work, however, and a fairly large barrier to entry to anybody using this. Anybody know or have any insight on what sort of trouble I'm letting myself in for if I put both the secrets and the API keys in the config for my app and check it into Github for all the world to see?

  • Facebook page linking to external site sign-up process, capture permission to write to wall in process?

    Hi all, Have had a good hunt through the archive but can't find anyone trying to do this... hope someone familiar with the facebook API can confirm if it's possible? Basically I have a client who wants to replicate their membership sign up process in a tab on their facebook page. The form would still submit to their own website to process, we'd just be replicating the form fields. As an additional requirement they want to capture peoples facebook user ID and get permission to post back to a users wall at the same time... The idea being that once the user is a member we can post back to their wall so their friends see that they've signed up... Basically after a sanity check that: 1) these things are possible to do; 2) the best method to build the form in a FB page - I'm guessing using JS to create all fields & ajax to submit to the external site?   • How can Facebook's session get mixed up because of NAT and/or Proxy

    Have received some reports from a customer (a very large company) they reported issues from clients who are using Facebook. These clients claim that once in a while when they log in to Facebook they end up in someone else's session. I know that network is NATed then Proxied before getting to Facebook.com. Although I'm not able to explain how this issue can occur. Is it possible that the Proxy is not sending the right session back to the clients? How can they end up with someone else's session since Facebook is cookie based session?? Anyone seen this before?

  • Blocking facebook's Like button in firefox

    Many sites today use widgets from facebook such as the Like button, list of friends who are fans of that site and so on. While it may be a nice feature, I perceive it to be a serious privacy intrusion, because facebook most likely stores information about which sites you visit. I also heard that when you are not logged into facebook, it still tracks the sites you visit (probably with a cookie) and once you log in attaches the data to your real account. For now, I want to keep using facebook, but I would like to block just these widgets so it can't track me. Is there any Firefox extension which could do that?

    In Facebook, some links to articles or videos appear to be genuine links, but in fact there are leading to some "content viewing" Facebook apps, like "Dailymotion", "The Guardian", or "Yahoo!". Those apps usually require access to my email address, basic info, birthday, location, plus right to post on my behalf. Some even say in small letters "To use this app, you will be upgraded to Facebook Timeline": Workaround: Copy the name of the article/video Paste it into Google within quotes First result is the original unencumbered content. I don't want to install Facebook spyapps that provide zero value, so I do this every time. QUESTION:Is there a Greasemonkey script or similar, that would perform these 3 steps for me? I am using Chrome on Linux. I hesitated to post this question on WebApps, but over there they are clear that such questions should be posted on SuperUser.

    I have Firefox beta installed and when I visited Facebook the other day I turned on Messenger for Firefox. I tried it and I think I'll pass. However, I do not see any way to uninstall it. I skimmed through Firefox Options and returned to the Facebook "Turn On" page, but I do not see a Turn Off button anywhere. I can't even hide the Facebook buttons added to my navigation toolbar by dragging them into the Customize Toolbar window. The Mozilla article announcing the Social API claims "It’s just as easy to remove", but offers no instructions on how to do so. How can I turn off or uninstall Facebook Messenger for Firefox?

  • Which technology is best suited to store and query a huge readonly graph?

    I have a huge directed graph: It consists of 1.6 million nodes and 30 million edges. I want the users to be able to find all the shortest connections (including incoming and outgoing edges) between two nodes of the graph (via a web interface). At the moment I have stored the graph in a PostgreSQL database. But that solution is not very efficient and elegant, I basically need to store all the edges of the graph twice (see my question PostgreSQL: How to optimize my database for storing and querying a huge graph). It was suggested to me to use a GraphDB like neo4j or AllegroGraph. However the free version of AllegroGraph is limited to 50 million nodes and also has a very high-level API (RDF), which seems too powerful and complex for my problem. Neo4j on the other hand has only a very low level API (and the python interface is not mature yet). Both of them seem to be more suited for problems, where nodes and edges are frequently added or removed to a graph. For a simple search on a graph, these GraphDBs seem to be too complex. One idea I had would be to "misuse" a search engine like Lucene for the job, since I'm basically only searching connections in a graph. Another idea would be, to have a server process, storing the whole graph (500MB to 1GB) in memory. The clients could then query the server process and could transverse the graph very quickly, since the graph is stored in memory. Is there an easy possibility to write such a server (preferably in Python) using some existing framework? Which technology would you use to store and query such a huge readonly graph?

I need something like Graph::Easy::Layout but I have no idea how to get nodes coordinates: I render nodes myself and I only want to retrieve box coordinates/size. Any suggestions?     There are lots of Facebook + Rails solutions, most notably Facebooker, but this and many others are not compatible with Rails 3. I'm currently using Authlogic for authentication with my app, and I want to give users the option of Facebook to sign in. I want to find the best way to have FB and Authlogic go together; right now I'm just writing my own Authlogic add-on for Facebook but if this has already been done then I don't want to redo someone else's work. Does anyone know of anything like this?

    I created an application with a name and connect URL on facebook. I put below code in test.php here (test.php): include_once 'facebook.php'; $fb = new Facebook('api_key', 'secret'); $user = $fb->require_login(); echo $fb->api_client->user; echo $fb->api_client->session_key; when I go to that page, it takes me to facebook login, after I login it redirects me to same test.php with an auth_token. But it doesn't stop there. For some reason, the script is taking me to facebook again and since I already logged in facebook redirecting me to test.php with another auth_token just like below /test.php?auth_token=76a6eb21b872cdfe787ea85a240905dd&auth_token=597d7532bf53c8ce37cc003bcf7d2905 It never stops there, test.php taking me to facebook again and again :( Please tell me what wrong??   • How do I post a link to the feed of a page via the Graph API *as* the page?

    I'm working on a plugin for a Wordpress blog that posts a link to every article published to a Facebook Page associated with the blog. I'm using the Graph API and I have authenticated myself, for the time being, via OAuth. I can successfully post a message to the page using curl via a POST request to https://graph.facebook.com/{mypageid}/feed` with e.g. message = "This is a test" and it published the message. The problem is that the message is "from" my user account. I'm an admin on this test page, and when I go to Facebook and post an update from the web, the link comes "from" my page. Is there a way to authenticate myself as a page? Or is there an alternate way to POST to a page feed that doesn't end up being interpreted as a comment from a user? Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.
