  my Netgear router randomly reset itself the other day loosing all of my config settings: DSL details, Firewall rules, the lot! So I set about restoring all of the details manually, but when it came to configuring the firewall I wanted improve the security by explicitly setting 'deny' rules for everything that I figured is 'non-essential', and (although not necessary) whilst I was at it I set explicit 'allow' for the 'essential' protocols. I'll admit now I didn't really know what I was doing and everything was just 'my best guess', but I enabled only DNS, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SFTP, TFTP with everything else blocked. This did not work for me as I could not access 99% of web sites (although strangely Google worked!), so I played around a bit more and found that (oddly) if I disabled just the explicit 'allow' rules then everything worked fine, for browsing anyway. Today I came to work on some web-sites via FTP and just could not get a consistent connection, it kept dropping out after a few files or being blocked by the server or simply not connecting. It would authenticate okay but then stop when retrieving the initial directory listing! e.g.: Status: Delaying connection for 1 second due to previously failed connection attempt... Status: Resolving address of ftp.domain.co.uk Status: Resolving address of ftp.domain.co.uk Status: Connecting to 123.123.123.123:21... Status: Connecting to 123.123.123.123:21... I've checked and re-checked the FTP settings (they worked before anyway), I have Googled the I.T. out of the various protocols that I have blocked in the fire-wall but none seem essential to FTP (other than FTP/SFTP etc. which I have passively enabled). I'm (clearly) no server engineer, or protocols / fire-wall expert so I was hoping that some one could maybe shed some light on why my FTP is failing. I've been wondering if I ought to be allowing BGP, BOOTP and/or IDENT (or any others)? What other protocols are required for FTP? Thanks in advance!

• simple apache2 reverse proxy setup not working

  I know what proxy is (very high level), it's just I have never set up one, and it feels like I might be missing some big fat point here. My setup: client server (static IP), runs apache on port 80 proxy (has 2 network cards, one is on the clients network, the other one with a static IP on the server network), runs apache on port 80 I am trying to configure these three machines so that when client requests: http://proxy/machine1 It gets served server's pages at server root URL, i.e. http://server/ I can access client pages just fine. However, when I try accessing a page from the client machine, it simply gets redirected to server's IP address, which it clearly can't access since they are not on the same network: ... <meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=http://server/machine1"></meta> <title>Redirect</title> ... • Apache Reverse Proxy server and SSL NTLM SharePoint

  Hi, I'm trying to set Apache as proxy server to an internal SharePoint server. I have previously configured Apache to run as a proxy server to export internal webpages and web applications. However, the Sharepoint is using SSL and NTLM authentication, and this is new to me :( I have tried many options, the traffic seems to be forwared as I get the authentication popup window, but when I insert the user/pass, I get back to the same popup window. Anybody has configured Apache to do so? I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it.   (On Mac OS X 10.6, Apache 2.2.11) Following the oft-repeated googled advice, I've set up mod_proxy on my Mac to act as a forward proxy for http requests. My httpd.conf contains this: <IfModule mod_proxy> ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Allow from all </Proxy> (Yes, I realize that's not ideal, but I'm behind a firewall trying to figure out why the thing doesn't work at all) So, when I point my browser's proxy settings to the local server (ip_address:80), here's what happens: I browse to http://www.cnn.com I see via sniffer that this is sent to Apache on the Mac Apache responds with its default home page ("It works!" is all this page says) So... Apache is not doing as expected -- it is not forwarding my browser's request out onto the Internet to cnn. Nothing in the logfile indicates an error or problem, and Apache returns a 200 header to the browser. Clearly there is some very basic configuration step I'm not understanding... but what?

  I'm trying to connect to a CentOS Linux box that I have hosted on EC2 and I think I have everything configured correctly but when I try to connect I get this series of messages Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Status: Connected Status: Retrieving directory listing... Command: PWD Response: 257 "/home/tyndall" Command: TYPE I Response: 200 Switching to Binary mode. Command: PASV Error: Connection timed out Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing Not sure where to start troubleshooting this issue. Any ideas? Do I need to change any permissions? I would think this ID has the ability to see my own home directory. I am able to push/pull files from the command line version of FTP client working on Windows.

  I am deploying an application and a Wordpress installation on AWS. I have Wordpress set up under Apache on an EC2, and my application under Lighttpd, and I want to reverse-proxy Wordpress through the application node. This works fine, I just set up the reverse proxy in Lighttpd as so: $HTTP["url"] =~ "^/blog" { proxy.server = ( "/blog" => ( "blog" => ( "host" => "123.456.789.123", "port" => 80 )) ) } url.rewrite-once = ( "^(.*?)$" => "/index.php/$1" ) However, the issue is in the rewrite. When I enable rewriting, it catches it before the reverse proxy, and routes to index.php on the application server. I need it to not rewrite if it's going to the blog. I tried various regex matches and other configurations, but I haven't been able to get it to support rewriting and proxying at the same time. How can this be done?

So, using the gui, I would go: Start Control Panel Network and Internet Internet Options Connections LAN Settings and then - enable/disable the proxy - define IP:port of proxy server But I would like to rather do this from the command line (so that I can run the command from a batch-file with a shortcut key - enabling me to switch proxy configs using a short-cut, rather than having to wade through the MS wizard). I've looked at using netsh.exe to change the settings for WinHTTP, but this seems to be thr wrong thing to do, as the WinHTTP setting do not appear to be related to the LAN settings. • Unix: Sync directory with FTP or SFTP directory

  I have a website on my local computer running Mac OS X. I am wondering if there is any built-in command that I can run in the Terminal that will upload that website to my webserver either through FTP or, if possible, SFTP. Installing new commands through MacPorts is also a possibility. A big bonus would be that it only uploaded the files that needs to be updated and not everything else. It would also be nice if I can tell it to delete the files on the server that no longer exists locally once in a while. Any good tips?

  I have a CentOS VM running in Virtualbox on a Windows 7 host (all 64-bit). I have configured the proxy in the System menu and have added the proxy=http://my.proxy.com:12345 line to my /etc/yum.conf file. I am able to connect to the internet from a browser, and I can update packages form the update manager and install them from the package manager. However, I cannot use yum for anything. When I attempt to use yum (install, update, upgrade, or anything else), It attempts to connect to the mirrors, does nothing, then after a minute or so, quits. Does anyone know how to configure yum to work behind a proxy?

  Ok, here's the story. I have a server running FTP 'out there' I can connect to it using the admin account, browse files, download files. When I try to upload files, I get 550 Access Denied. I have tried through FileZilla and command line. I have windows firewall turned off (on my machine) I can UPLOAD files from another machine (using the same admin account) on our local network (that means, same public IP) what is the problem? I am running Windows 7, Build 7100 and the other machine on the network is running XP SP3 The thing that gets me though, is that this worked for the last probably 4 months, without a problem, I get back in the office after a weekend today and it won't work...

  At the moment I'm using filezilla to deploy new versions of a site to the live server. the trouble is that there are one or two config, bootstrap etc. files which are different for the live site and I have to be careful not to overwrite. Also there are big areas of code that never change (eg I use the zend framework, which is always the same). I'd like to be able to record a macro to upload the same bunch of files and folders every time, excluding subdirectories and files which shouldn't be overwritten. Does any ftp client offer this?

  I have an FTP Script I'm using to automate a file transfer. The transfer works fine on my PC (XP SP2), but when I try and run it on a VM on my PC (XP SP2), the "put" commands gives off: 504 Command not implemented for that parameter. FTP File: open [ftp site] [username] [password] cd [directory on FTP server] binary hash put ..\[subfolder1]\[Subfolder2]\[subfolder3]\[filename] bye The FTP site/server is around the world, and not under my control. From what I understand of a 504, that means the command should NEVER work, but since the same script DOES work on my PC (hosting the VM), that eliminates syntax, file naming, etc. The put command when triggered from the VM, actually creates a 0 length file on the target FTP server, but doesn't populate the file.

  I have a backend server running on http://10.0.2.20/ from the local network, which serves similar to this: / (root) | |_user1/ | |_www/ | |_private/ | |_user2/ |_www/ |_private/ (etc.) Accessing http://10.0.2.20/user1/ of course, contains 'www' and 'private' folders and is proxied through a public server using Apache's Reverse Proxy. I'd like it so the following happens: http://public-proxy-server/user1/ actually shows the content from http://10.0.2.20/user1/www/ without indicating it in the URL. (/private/ would not be accessible via the public proxy server). The key here, is for it to be dynamic, so all requests to http://public-proxy-server/*/should show content from http://10.0.2.20/*/www/. Again, the proxy currently works fine; below is the config: (On the public server) <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.domain.com ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyVia full ProxyPass / http://10.0.2.20/ ProxyPassReverse / http://10.0.2.20/ </VirtualHost> (On the backend server) <VirtualHost *:80> ... #this directory contains folders 'user1' and 'user2' DocumentRoot /var/www/ ... </VirtualHost>

• Ubuntu (9.1) behind a ISA proxy

  I have set up a Ubuntu PC on a next work that is behind a ISA Proxy. When I run the command sudo apt-get update I get several messages with this message: 502 Proxy Error (The ISA Sever denied the specified Uniform Resource Locator) The computer can see the internet and adding the proxy settings in the Network Preferences does not help. When I do a ifconfig Im on a 192 address which is not the usual subnet our PCs are on. Any ideas?

• Can't connect to my FTP server, why?

  I have a windows 2008 server running with FTP 7 on IIS 7. I have it configured to connect as it is out of the box, with a particular user (lets say john) with read/write access. When I use my FileZilla client software, I can connect to the server as john just fine. No problems at all. However, when I try to connect using Windows Explorer or using the cmd prompt I get stone walled, saying "Login failed". My client machine is Windows Vista Ultimate. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
