• Gnome 3 panel and menus are all gone?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 using gnome 3 shell. I have set my pc to automatically log into gnome shell so I do not see the login screen. Today I installed some updates and now the gnome panel is gone. When my pc logs in I ONLY see the background. There are no menus, nothing! Even the exit, minimize and maximise buttons in the top tight corner of the windows are gone. Also, alt+f2 also does not work. Any ideas how to fix this? I have a Nvidia Geforce 7900GTO with the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. I have also used the recovery mode and removed some packages that apparently were broken. Still does not work.

• Can not authenticate form system tools

  Whenever I try to run a program from gnome, I get messages like Authenticated is required to run the Gparted Partition Editor The same goes for all programs that need root permission and I try to run from 'System tools' in my gnome-fallback. However the same user can become root in gnome terminal with no problem (I added the user to sudoers). I must mention that I've changed the user's password after OS install, so I think I need to update something but don't know what. I appreciate your hints.

  When i run gnome-terminal with the -e to execute a command the PATH used to find the command is not the PATH used in the terminal initiating the command For example: I open an terminal and set the PATH to be "./:$PATH type in gnome-terminal -e cluster_node It can't find the cluster node. if I type gnome-terminal -e ./cluster_node it works If I add in the /etc/environemtn the PATH ./ then it works always/ I think it doesn't use theterminal environment PATH from which it was launched.

• What to do about this gnome-keyring message?

  I upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and installed lxde. Since then whenever I try to print some file (or use command lpstat), I get this message on the terminal: "WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-SZ59jJ/pkcs11: No such file or directory". This is beyond my knowledge and from search I only realize that this mey be related to security (as learned from gnome-keyring on wikipedia). I have no idea what to about this warning. Can anybody please suggest? Evidently as stated, I am not using gnome desktop, I choose lxde session at the time of logging in.

• Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome 3 shell doesn't have the Activities menu or launcher

  I installed it from apt-get and it only has Applications and Places instead of the Activities menu, it also doesn't have the dock or launcher. Using the super key does nothing, as neither does mousing to the upper left corner. I have also installed the tweak tool, but it looks like all the settings are not being applied to the UI. Am I missing something. I have never used Gnome 3 before as I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4, which I believe was Gnome 2 for the shell. I have been reading the documentation on the Gnome site and it says there should be an Activity menu and other items that aren't there. Thanks

• How do I remove the "Shutdown" menu entry from Gnome's system menu?

  We have a lab with multiple RedHat EL5 machines running the Gnome desktop environment. When developers are done using the machine sometimes they miss the logout button and click the Shutdown button by mistake (easy to do, I've done it myself). Needless to say, for those remoted into the lab it's sometimes devastating. Is there a way to remove the Shutdown entry for all users from the Gnome menu? Note: I do not mean Shutdown on the greeter, but the Shutdown button on the menu drop down that is next to logout, sleep, etc.

  This is the opposite of this question. Basically I've been using Ubuntu for a while but decided to give KDE a shot so I went through the process of getting the latest KDE installed. I'm very impressed with KDE and the Kwin window manager seems like a better WM than Compiz which is what I was using for Gnome (sure that's an oppinion). This was an Ubuntu Jaunty install. So how do I go about removing the Gnome desktop? Is there an automated way similar to what my previous question covered? UPDATE: Should there be any packages I should NOT remove in the process?

• 13.04 Dash Icon and Ubuntu Gnome-Classic Issues

  The dash icon for Ubuntu 13.04 was "released", and a how-to on OMG! Ubuntu! Was written. Now, I followed all of the instructions, and the assets installed fine. Oh they installed alright, and now I can't get rid of them! I went through the multiple posts, but since this seems to be a new problem, none of the answers were working, and nothing new was appearing! So what I did, was I went into Gnome-Classic, just for old times sake, and I wanted to hide from the new 13.04 icons I didn't really take to. And of course what should appear covering my top, and bottom panels, but the Unity dock, with it's 13.04 Dash icon and everything. Wait, how did unity make it's way into my gnome-classic environment? I'm not really sure, but after about an hour of fooling around with Unity-Tweak and the compiz configuration, I needed something new. Would it be a bad idea to reinstall? At this point, nothing much would be lost, but I would like to stray from that idea.

A lot of backend systems still demand classic windows identities, but everything we do now has moved to claims. So sometimes (albeit rare), we have to translate a claims identity into a classic windows identity. This is where the “Claims to Windows Token Service” comes into play. SharePoint 2010 and 2013 make use of this but you can use this in any .NET application. First of all, there are some basic requirements for this to work, First, you will need the string value of a UPN claim. Just a string value, really! This means you can also use FBA or anything else. The “proper” way to do this of course is that you must originate this from a AD backed claim. So a user authenticated using ADFS or similar would be perfect. • Where can I download the Gnome 3 Icons?

  After poking around on the Internet for awhile, I haven't been able to find the default icons used in Gnome 3 anywhere. My requirements are fairly simple: SVGs would be nice, but not necessary This doesn't need to be installable as an icon theme in Ubuntu A compressed folder with all of the icons would be good, but I don't mind browsing a repository and downloading individual icons. As a last resort, I could always download a full Gnome 3 iso and find the icons that way, but hopefully someone knows of a better solution.

  Looks like it is easy to log keystrokes of all processes of the same user. A basic keylogger is 'xinput'. xinput test-xi2 The command generates log of all key-presses. Unfortunately, this includes passwords in gnome-terminal. Googling suggested that grabbing keyboard may prevent other windows from capturing key strokes. Is there a way to prevent XI2 logging in gnome-terminal? Or is there an X terminal that has this feature?

I'm searching for a feature which provided a "maximise" button in every window, even ones which should have only the "close" button. In older Ubuntu versions this feature was activated when switching from "None" to "Normal" in "Visual Effects": But now, that window is out, and I can't find that feature.   I once used gnome-mount like this gnome-mount -o ro -d /dev/sda2 or gnome-mount -o ro -p "Macintosh HD" But, alas, gnome-mount seems to be no more. RIP. I can do this gvfs-mount -d /dev/sda2 (which generates a whole lot of errors but does mount the partition in the /media directory.)   I have a project that I have inherited that is primarily a Classic ASP application; however, intermixed in the the application are a handful of ASP.net pages. Some of the ASP.net pages are 1.1 and do not use a code behind model. The classic ASP pages have a number of /include directories where there's a file for database connections. The ASP.Net pages have the connection string hard coded in in their code. I'm trying to clean up this mess of connection strings so it's easier to manage across development environments. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I may be able to effectively do this that will work for both Classic ASP and ASP.Net pages? Thanks

• Is it possible to maintain the url while redirecting to a classic asp page from a controller?

  While migrating a site from a classic asp to MVC, I'm having the problem that not all controllers are implemented yet. For those which are not implemented, I'd like to serve the classic asp page (say /product.asp?id=123) while maintaining the nice url /product/123. To accomplish this I implemented a dummy ProductController which returns a RedirectResult to the classic asp url. But that changes the url in the browsers navigation bar. Requirement has it, that the urls should always be a clean (mvc) one, eventhough the page has not yet been fully migrated. If this can't be done using a dummy controller, what would be an alternative option to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

  hi, some bad legancy web application projects still have classic asp files. these project consist of 95% of classic .asp files and the rest only of asp.net (.aspx). if you right click on an .aspx file in the solution explorer of VS you can choose "view in browser" and "browse with...". however if i right click on an classic .asp file there, there is no such option! do you have any tip/hint/addin for me so that it will show these two context menu entries also for .asp files? i run all my projects in IIS not the build in casini web development server VS comes with! thanks, toebens
