  • Good Hash Function for Strings

    I'm trying to think up a good hash function for strings. And I was thinking it might be a good idea to sum up the unicode values for the first five characters in the string (assuming it has five, otherwise stop where it ends). Would that be a good idea, or is it a bad one? I am doing this in Java, but I wouldn't imagine that would make much of a difference.

  • Good development themes/environments for Gnome/kde/whatever?

    I've searched forever for good themes or customized versions of any type of x-server that is designed for development in terms of web productions/programming for all kind of stuffs. Features such as simplified workspace overviews, good tabbing support etc. For multimedia "UbuntuStudio" exists, and something like that but for programming instead. I know that it's possible to customize it by myself but I don't have the skills to make it all happen. Another reason why it's hard for me to customize it is that I simply do not know everything that would make it good for me. I've looked into gnome-shell and it has (according to me) superb workspace overview functions, but lacks in other spaces instead. Any help in finding a good solution for me in this case is appreciated. If some of you also have had this problem and found a solution that works for you, please tell me how you did :) Would love to solve this for once!

  • How to embed an authorize.net payment gateway form into a single page website with one item for sale?

    My website sells one item. I am currently using the simple checkout button embedded on the website. Rather than having the button I would like the order form to be on the single page with a field for quantity. At first I imagined that there would be a simple form that I could embed however it looks like that I need a full integration into my website through the Advanced Integration Method (AIM) which is much more complicated then I wanted. I don't want integration into my website, can I do it without, and if I have to what is the cleanest and simplest way to do it?

    I am a long time professional C/C++ programmer (mostly embedded systems) and a hobbyist windows & php hacker. Can anyone recommend a book(s) specifically aimed at designing and (hopefully) implementing an MMORPG? I don't need general how to design or how to code books. Maybe a really good generic games book, but I am not interested in 1st person shooters, I want to know what it takes to implement an MMORPG. Good books, maybe also good URLs. I have issues with diffrent versions on diffrent servers The development tools are worse than access I dont understand it.     I'm looking for a good way to convert Office (mostly Microsoft) documents to PDF in Java. I've been looking at using the OpenOffice SDK but from the samples I've looked at it looks like this requires having OpenOffice running in server mode to do the work. Does anyone know of a good way to do this? Good meaning the less external requirements, the better. A 100% Java API would be best, but I don't expect that actually exists.

    Hello! I decidet to start my own web project. It should be highload project, and I can't decide which technologies should I use. I'm good in ASP.NET MVC, but I like languages like Python more than C#. I read a lot about Python and Django/Pylons/etc but I didn't find any good examples of highload projects on python. So, the question is: Is Python good for highload project? Is it enough fast? And if it is, are python frameworks like django/pylons/etc good for this? Or asp.net mvc will be better choice? PS, I'm not interesting in Java, Ruby and PHP :) So, I'm choosing only between Python + django/pylons/etc and asp.net mvc. Thanks in advance. Please, don't make holywars :)
