• How to use CLEAR USB WiMax in Ubuntu (host) and Windows XP (guest) using VirtualBox

  I'm trying to use CLEAR Motorola WiMax USB in Ubuntu as there is no support for Linux as yet. I've installed Windows XP as guest in Ubuntu and the version I'm using is 3.2.2. USB is connecting fine in Windows XP but I can't use internet in Ubuntu. Can you please tell me how to do it. Here is the configuration that could help you guys. Thanks in advance. • Cannot login to fresh Kubuntu installation as admin, but only as guest

  I just installed a fresh Kubuntu 12.10 on a machine beside Windows 7. After successful installation, I rebooted and wanted to login. But when I type my password and hit Enter, some command line screen shows up for the split of a second and then it thows me back to the login screen without any error message. It's hard to spot what the command line text says, but I couldn't see any error or something like that. Anyway, when I log in as guest (without password), everything works finely. Also, when going to a system command line (using Ctrl+Alt+F1), I can login with my account without any problems. Does anyone have a clue what is going on and how to fix it?

• Disable all the idiot-checking in Mac OS X

  I am a Windows/Linux user, who is learning Mac OS X out of interest in doing dev-work for the iPad which I recently purchased. However, OS X is driving me nuts by trying to protect all it's system files, hiding all of the important OS components I want to tweak, and generally making it impossible to do any modification to the OS in general to make it more usable. Therefore, is there a way to turn off all the idiot-checking in Finder? On XP, I can disable "Hide Protected Operating system files" and set "Show Hidden Files". On linux, there really aren't many hidden files, and changing the configuration for .files is easy enough in Gnome and XFCE. How can I set up OS X in a similar way. I am not new to computers, and I am fully aware that deleting system files can damage or even irreparably disable a OS install. Therefore, If I intentionally try to delete a file, or move something, it's probably intentional, and I am willing to accept the consequences in any case. At this point, I have fallen back to doing everything through the command line (which takes forever), because Finder is practically unusable. (As for what I am attempting to do, I also asked about GUI changes here.)

  I am sick of the driver issues of Linux. So I am planning to switch to Windows 7 as a host and virtualize my Linux into it. My laptop has integrated Intel graphics and supports VT-d. For speed reasons I would like to assign that card to Linux. Now, Parallels could do it but this page says Note: If you have only one PCIe video adapter, its name will be grayed out in the PCI Devices list and you will not be able to allocate it to your virtual machines. I would be perfectly fine with a headless Windows 7 (I can remotely admin from other computers or just the Linux guest) -- is there any VM software that doesn't have this restriction?

  I have an Ubuntu Server 12 virtualbox guest running on a Windows 7 host which has a dynamic IP (and I don't wanna change this considering it's a laptop and I'm changing network frenquently). I want to have a static IP for my VM and a SSH access from my host but I still want to have the internet access on my VM. I tried added a second host only adapter and configured /etc/network/interface to set eth1 to a static ip, but I can't connect via SSH to it. Setting only adapter1 to host only works for SSH and static IP but I lose the internet access.

• KVM guest storage difference with NBD and NFS

  I am setting up my own little private cloud for my own use maybe for a project or to. I am using linux kvm on debian 6. I have 3 servers 2 of them for compute nodes and 1 storage node. I would I have already installed kvm made a few test machines got my networking setup. I have 2 nics on each server 1 nic is for web traffic other nic is for network traffic. My first Idea was to use NFS for storing the guest machines which can range in size, maybe 8gb maybe 100gb, it just depends. I was doing have heard of nbd before seems like it could work but I dont know what the performance differences are and if it will effect my enviroment, nfs looks like it will be easier to use.

The SMART utility tells me I have 69 bad sectors on the disk (it is 1 TB) So my question is 1) How do I tell if that HD is going bad? 2) How can I move the VM files to a different part of the disk if I get read/write errors when I try to copy?

  The .NET MicroFramework claims to work on 64K RAM and has list of compatible targets vendors. At the same time, same vendors who ship hardware and create Board Support Packages (vendors like Adeneo) keep releasing something named Windows 7 CE BSP for the same hardware targets. Obviously the OS as heavy as WinCE needs more than 64K RAM. So, somehow .NET MicroFramework is relevant to WinCE, but how ? Is it part of bigger OS or is it base of it, or are both mutually exclusive ? Background: 0.00006103515625 GByte of RAM is same as 64Kbyte of RAM. • SDL2 with OpenGL -- weird results, what's wrong?

  I'm porting an app to iOS, and therefore need to upgrade it to SDL2 from SDL1.2 (so far I'm testing it as an on OS X desktop app only). However, when running the code with SDL2, I'm getting weird results as shown on the second image below (the first image is how it looks with SDL, correctly). The single changeset that causes this is this one, do you see something obviously wrong there, or does SDL2 have some OpenGL nuances I'm unaware of? My SDL is based on changeset dd7e57847ea9 from HG (since then there is one "Allow specifying of OpenGL 3.2 Core Profile on Mac OS X" commit, not sure if that would help).

  Just going over my school notes, my teacher identifies multi-tasking OS, and time-sharing OS as two different things. I really don't see a difference between the two. MULTI-TASKING: You load a number of programs in the memory and execute them. You execute another program if the time quantum allocated to the current program expires OR if it goes on to do I/O and leaves the CPU OR if it finishes execution. TIME-SHARING: the same,again. The same applies in case of serial processing and batch processing. Although they are the same, I guess the only difference would be the way in which control information is passed to the CPU. Maybe, and again MAYBE, in serial processing you need to provide the punch cards with all the processes while in batch, the entire batch uses the same set of control information. Like all the print jobs would have the same control information.

  I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join, but am pretty confused. According to the docs if I say: os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get "C:sourcedir". According to the docs, this is normal, right? But when I use the copytree command, Python will output it the desired way, for example: import shutil src = os.path.join('c:', 'src') dst = os.path.join('c':', 'dst') shutil.copytree(src, dst) Here is the error code I get: WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C:src/*.*' If I wrap the os.path.join with os.path.normpath I get the same error. If this os.path.join can't be used this way, then I am confused as to its purpose. According to the pages suggested by Stack Overflow, slashes should not be used in join—that is correct, I assume?

  I just went through the whole certificate/keychain/provisioning/appID/profile/DNA test process to get my app running on my iPhone. Turns out my iPhone OS was out of date (3.0.1 I think), so I updated it. Now it says The version of iPhone OS on “Stefanie's phone” does not match any of the versions of iPhone OS supported for development with this copy of Xcode. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below. If necessary, the latest version of Xcode is available here. OS Installed on Stefanie's phone 3.1.3 (7E18) Xcode Supported iPhone OS Versions 3.1.2 (7D11) 3.1.1 (7C146) 3.1.1 (7C145) 3.1 (7C144) 3.0.1 (7A400) 3.0 2.2.1 2.2 2.1.1 2.1 2.0.2 (5C1) 2.0.1 (5B108) 2.0 (5A347) But I have Xcode 3.2.1, which is supposed to support iPhone OS 3.1.3. • os.path.getmtime() doesn't return fraction of a second

  I compile python 2.6.4 for centos 5.3 and find this issue that os.path.getmtime() or os.stat().m_time doesn't have the fraction part. As per docs, if os.stat_float_times() True, then it should return float value. In my case, I do see it as float, but no fraction part (it is 0). In [3]: os.path.getmtime('/tmp') Out[3]: 1268339116.0 In [4]: os.stat('/tmp') Out[4]: posix.stat_result(st_mode=17407, st_ino=508897L, st_dev=29952L, st_nlink=7, st_uid=0, st_gid=0, st_size=4096L, st_atime=1268101696, st_mtime=1268339116, st_ctime=1268339116) In [5]: os.stat_float_times() True In [6]: os.stat('/tmp').st_mtime Out[6]: 1268339116.0 It is also strange that the stat() output seems like an int. On windows, I do see a fraction part with the same python version. I am running centos on top of colinux, could that be playing a role, or is it some python build issue? I couldn't find any hits for generic colinux issue. May be it is how colinux configures the filesystem? What would I need to check in that case?

  I've got Windows Server 2008 R2 running as a development environment, with Hyper-V hosting a few different VMs. I've created a new VM - 4GB of RAM, 2 virtual procs, legacy network adapter, removed the SCSI interface. I'm booting to an ISO image of the Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD, for OS install. The problem is, after the "Windows is loading files" screen, but before the Windows logo animation, I get a blue screen: BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO yada yada yada *** STOP: 0x00000074 (etc, etc) I've used this same ISO several times to install to other VMs, no issue.

  I've been building a website for a guy who uses Mac OS X and occasionally he sends me screenshots of bugs. They come out looking like this: This is fairly typical of Mac screenshots. You get the window decorations, the shadow from the window and a white or transparent background (not the desktop wallpaper -- I've checked). Compare this to an Ubuntu window-shot (Alt+Print screen): It's impossible to keep a straight face and say the Ubuntu one anywhere near as elegant. My question is: Is there an application that can do this in Ubuntu? Edit: Follow up: Is there an application that can do this in one move? Shutter is pretty good but running the plugin for every screenshot is pretty tiresome as it doesn't seem to remember my preference (I want south-shadow and that requires selecting south, then clicking refresh, then save) and it's more clicks than I'd like. Is there a simple way of telling shutter I want south-shadow for all screenshots (except entire desktop and area-selection)?

  Background: My intention was to load a Virtual Machine (VM) on my Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My Mac had just enough room for a VM (my thought process was that VM was the same as partition) However, I burned the newest version of Ubuntu onto a CD, thinking that partitioning and running a virtual machine would be the same. I would restart my computer, booting up Ubuntu installer. The installation would not allow me to partition, forcing me to force shutdown my laptop. when I turn on my laptop, I see that my computer is "missing operating system".   Background: I'm investigating the viability of using a filesystem other than ext3/4, with the ability to run snapshots for backup and rollback purposes. The servers under consideration are mailbox server nodes running on Linode's Xen based VPS platform. I'm particularly drawn to the various published benefits which ZFS offers in terms of data integrity and this year's stable release of native ZFS support in Linux - http://zfsonlinux.org ZFS appears to be the more thorough option in terms of benefits and simplicity (instead of LVM+XFS). Please note that I have little experience with ZFS (which I use on a local FreeNAS installation) and none with XFS, hence the post. To date, my servers are using ext3 filesystems, not managed under LVM. Question in detail: So, I have two questions. (1) Which of the two filesystems would be the better choice for the best of all of the following 3 aspects, running on a Xen Linux guest? Snapshots Data Integrity Performance (2) If ZFS is a viable option, is it practical to use ZRAID across Xen disk images to further enhance the solution for data integrity?   I will tell you the whole story,one night when i was using KDE on Ubuntu 10.10 Kwin crashed then i shut down the os next day when i booted it the display came completely garbled and i went to safe graphics mode ,it worked and in reinstalled the Nvidia drivers and then restarted .Then immediatly, It said No init found Busybox XX.XX then I thought ill do a fresh install I inserted the ubuntu cd provided to me by Canonical.When i pressed 'try ubuntu without installing' instead of the graphic boot screen i saw.Ubuntu 10.10 in regular text and a progress bar few seconds after that the screen was flooded with error messages first alot of white then red.I then went to my win7 installation and saw a website which told me to find a Ext3 reader and format the ubuntu partition and the swap.I did that and when i restarted. GRUB configuration not found grub> Then it took my win 7 ERD and restored 7's bootloder Xp and 7 were working i put in the livecd again,Same error,Now usin my seven,Please help geeks,Ive even tried Knoppix,Fedora,Debiane.t.c they wont boot and i want to retain my win 7 and winxp partitions,I really miss linux.
