  • preg_match to find the current directory in a URL

    I'm trying to detect the current section of a site that a user is viewing by checking for the final directory in the URL. I'm using a PHP and regex to do it and I think I'm close but unfortunately not quite there yet.   • What would be the best way to store the questions and responses for a survey where I need to keep th

    Background I am writing a survey that is going to a large audience. It contains 15 questions and there are five possible answers to each question along with potential comments. The user can cycle through all 15 questions answering them in any order and is allowed to leave the survey at any point and return to answer the remaining questions. Once an answer has been attempted on all 15 questions a submit button appears which allows them to submit the questions as final answers. Until that stage all answers are required to be retrievable whenever the user loads the survey page up. The requirement is that the user only sees one question on a page and 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons allow the user to scroll through the questions. Requirement I could request the question each time the user clicks a button and save the current response and so on but that would be a large number of hits to a database that is already heavily used. I don't have the time to procure a new server etc so I have to make do with what I have. Is there any way I can cache the questions on the user machine and/or responses? Obviously I need the response data to be secure and only known to the user so I feel a little bit stuck as for the best way of doing this. Any pointers? I am prepared to offer a bounty of 100 points on this question if it means I get some good quality discussion and feedback going.

    Hi, I am trying check if the inner html of the element is empty but I wanted to do the validation on the server side, I'm treating the html as a string.   • Grails - Simple hasMany Problem - How does 'save' work?

    My problem is this: I want to create a grails domain instance, defining the 'Many' instances of another domain that it has. I have the actual source in a Google Code Project but the following should illustrate the problem. class Person { String name static hasMany[skills:Skill] static constraints = { id (visible:false) skills (nullable:false, blank:false) } } class Skill { String name String description static constraints = { id (visible:false) name (nullable:false, blank:false) description (nullable:false, blank:false) } } If you use this model and def scaffold for the two Controllers then you end up with a form like this that doesn't work; My own attempt to get this to work enumerates the Skills as checkboxes and looks like this; But when I save the Volunteer the skills are null! I need a single form to allow a person to register but I want to normalise the data so that I can add more skills at a later time.   • Python DictReader - Skipping rows with missing columns?

    heya, I have a Excel .CSV file I'm attempting to read in with DictReader. All seems to be well, except it seems to omit rows, specifically those with missing columns. Our input looks like: mail,givenName,sn,lorem,ipsum,dolor,telephoneNumber ian[email protected],ian,bay,3424,8403,2535,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],mike,gibson,3424,8403,2535,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],ross,martin,,,,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],david,connor,,,,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],chris,call,3424,8403,2535,+65(2)34523534545 So some of the rows have missing lorem/ipsum/dolor columns, and it's just a string of commas for those. We're reading it in with: def read_gd_dump(input_file="blah 20100423.csv"): gd_extract = csv.DictReader(open('blah 20100423.csv'), restval='missing', dialect='excel') return dict([(row['something'], row) for row in gd_extract]) And I checked that "something" (the key for our dict) isn't one of the missing columns, I had originally suspected it might be that. It's one of the columns after that. However, DictReader seems to completely skip over the rows. I tried setting restval to something, didn't seem to make any difference. I can't seem to find anything in Python's CSV docs (http://docs.python.org/library/csv.html) that would explain this behaviour, but I may have misread something. Any ideas? Thanks, Victor

  • A generic error occurred in GDI+, JPEG Image to MemoryStream

    Hi, This seems to be a bit of an infamous error all over the web. So much so that I have been unable to find an answer to my problem as my scenario doesn't fit. An exception gets thrown when I save the image to the stream. Weirdly this works perfectly with a png but gives the above error with jpg and gif which is rather confusing. Most similar problem out there relate to saving images to files without permissions.   • Silverlight Firestarter Wrap Up and WCF RIA Services Talk Sample Code

    I had a great time attending and speaking at the Silverlight Firestarter event up in Redmond on December 2, 2010. In addition to getting a chance to hang out with a lot of cool people from Microsoft such as Scott Guthrie, John Papa, Tim Heuer, Brian Goldfarb, John Allwright, David Pugmire, Jesse Liberty, Jeff Handley, Yavor Georgiev, Jossef Goldberg, Mike Cook and many others, I also had a chance to chat with a lot of people attending the event and hear about what projects they’re working on which was awesome. If you didn’t get a chance to look through all of the new features coming in Silverlight 5 check out John Papa’s post on the subject. While at the Silverlight Firestarter event I gave a presentation on WCF RIA Services and wanted to get the code posted since several people have asked when it’d be available. I had a few people ask about the green bracelet on my left hand since it looks like something you’d get from a waterpark. It was used to get us access down a little hall that led backstage and allowed us to go backstage during the event. I thought it looked kind of dorky but it was required to get through security. Over 1000 people registered to attend the conference in person at the Microsoft campus and well over 15,000 to watch it through the live stream.  The event started for me on Tuesday afternoon with a flight up to Seattle from Phoenix. My flight was delayed 1 1/2 hours (I seem to be good at booking delayed flights) so I didn’t get up there until almost 8 PM. John Papa did a tech check at 9 PM that night and I was scheduled for 9:30 PM. We basically plugged in my laptop backstage (amazing number of servers, racks and audio devices back there) and made sure everything showed up properly on the projector and the machines recording the presentation. In addition to a dedicated show director, there were at least 5 tech people back stage and at least that many up in the booth running lights, audio, cameras, and other aspects of the show. I wish I would’ve taken a picture of the backstage setup since it was pretty massive – servers all over the place. I definitely gained a new appreciation for how much work goes into these types of events. Here’s what the room looked like right before my tech check– not real exciting at this point. That’s Yavor Georgiev (who spoke on WCF Services at the Firestarter) in the background. We had plenty of monitors to reference during the presentation. Two monitors for slides (right and left side) and a notes monitor. The 4th monitor showed the time and they’d type in notes to us as we talked (such as “You’re over time!” in my case since I went around 4 minutes over :-)). Wednesday morning I went back on campus at Microsoft and watched John Papa film a few Silverlight TV episodes with Dave Campbell and Ryan Plemons.   Next I had the chance to watch the dry run of the keynote with Scott Guthrie and John Papa. We were all blown away by the demos shown since they were even better than expected. Starting at 1 PM on Wednesday I went over to Building 35 and listened to Yavor Georgiev (WCF Services), Jaime Rodriguez (Windows Phone 7), Jesse Liberty (Data Binding) and Jossef Goldberg and Mike Cook (Silverlight Performance) give their different talks and we all shared feedback with each other which was a lot of fun. Jeff Handley from the RIA Services team came afterwards and listened to me give a dry run of my WCF RIA Services talk. He had some great feedback that I really appreciated getting. That night I hung out with John Papa and Ward Bell and listened to John walk through his keynote demos. I also got a sneak peak of the gift given to Dave Campbell for all his work with Silverlight Cream over the years. It’s a poster signed by all of the key people involved with Silverlight: Thursday morning I got up fairly early to get to the event center by 8 AM for speaker pictures. It was nice and quiet at that point although outside the room there was a huge line of people waiting to get in.     At around 8:30 AM everyone was let in and the main room was filled quickly. Two other overflow rooms in the Microsoft conference center (Building 33) were also filled to capacity. At around 9 AM Scott Guthrie kicked off the event and all the excitement started! From there it was all a blur but it was definitely a lot of fun. All of the sessions for the Silverlight Firestarter were recorded and can be watched here (including the keynote).     i was using von welch's instructions at http://v2kblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/adding-second-hard-drive.html] to install a 500 gig seagate drive to write the recordings to. everything seemed to be going ok until mkfs /dev/sdb1 then we get an error message mkfs.ext2: inode_size (128) * inodes_count (0) too big for a filesystem with 0 blocks, specify a higher inode_ratio (-i) or lower inode count (-N) my son is trying to help me but this is beyond him. our knowledge of unix/linux is very limited. at work the support people just sent me a line by line cook book. i would appreciate any help you can give us. the computer is a gateway mdp e4000 . mythbuntu is installed on a pata drive and we are adding a sata drive for the second drive. the bios sees the drive.

  • Is it a bad idea to run SELinux and AppArmor at the same time?

    My corporate policy says that Linux boxes must be secured with SELinux (so that a security auditor can check the 'yes, we're extremely secure!' checkbox for each server). I had hoped to take advantage of Ubuntu's awesome default AppArmor security. Is it unwise to run both Apparmor and SELinux? (If so, can this bad idea be mitigated with some apparmor and/or selinux tweaks?) Update 1/28 -- Kees Cook has pointed out in his answer the dead simple reason why it's a bad idea to run both -- the Linux kernel says you can't1. [ 1 More precisely, the Linux Security Modules interface framework is designed for a single running implementation, and does not support more than a single running implementation. ] Update 1/27 -- I've accepted the answer from kenny.r , though I would be happier with some more technical reasons of why this would fail, or examples of actual conflicts that this would cause.

    First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day.     Alas I find my self doing another book review... its not clear to me that I should continue to do that but on this particular book it heads in the right direction. As noted in an earlier post I find the idea of a cook book to be of particular interest and useful in my work with Silverlight. This book has gotten closer then any other to date in building the ideal Silverlight book. Albeit the book does make an attempt to teach Silverlight to some degree but it tends to be more of a reference book,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • Eclipse version in Debian package directories too old. Alternatives to manual install?

    Ian Murdock, the founder of Debian, has commented that package management is "the single biggest advancement Linux has brought to the industry". (Wikipedia) But for some reason I'm forced to install eclipse manually if I want the most recent version, rather than the ancient eclipse 3.5.2 from the Debian package directories. Why? Is there a more convenient way to get the newer version? (I know the manual install is very little work, but I still think it should be unnecessary)

I don't want the page to refresh which is why I'm hoping for a combination of JavaScript and jQuery. Passing orders to cooker: There are total of 1 order(s) 1 Roger, waiter. I am processing order #100 The goal is waiter must take orders and then give them to the cook. The waiter has to wait cook finishes all pizza, deliver the pizza, and then take new orders. I asked how P-V work in my previous post here. I don't think it has anything to do with \n consuming? I tried all kinds of combination of wait(), but none work. Where did I make a mistake? The two waits switch back to parent (like I said I tried all possible wait() combination...).
