• C++ help with getline function with ifstream

  So I am writing a program that deals with reading in and writing out to a file. I use the getline() function because some of the lines in the text file may contain multiple elements. I've never had a problem with getline until now. Here's what I got. The text file looks like this: John Smith // Client name 1234 Hollow Lane, Chicago, IL // Address 123-45-6789 // SSN Walmart // Employer 58000 // Income 2 // Number of accounts the client has 1111 // Account Number 2222 // Account Number ifstream inFile("ClientInfo.txt"); if(inFile.fail()) { cout << "Problem opening file."; } else { string name, address, ssn, employer; double income; int numOfAccount; getline(inFile, name); getline(inFile, address); // I'll stop here because I know this is where it fails. When I debugged this code, I found that name == "John", instead of name == "John Smith", and Address == "Smith" and so on. Am I doing something wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• West Palm Beach Developers&rsquo; Group Celebrates its Fifth Anniversary as a Member of INETA

  Earlier this week marked our fifth anniversary as an INETA group, a fact that we had forgotten but thankfully INETA remembered. In celebrating our membership, INETA sent us a certificate recognizing our membership which we will be sharing with our members at our upcoming meeting. It‘s been a great two-year tenure for me as group co-coordinator working with Venkat Subramanian who had been involved with the group since its inception. Moving into the future we hope to grow both group membership and leadership. We continue to strive to bring added value to our membership which can only happen with your ideas, feedback and involvement in our community-driven group. Our next almost sold-out meeting will be taking place on 8/28/2012 6:30PM (Register at: http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=607) . Will Strohl, DotNetNuke’s Technical Evangelist will be presenting to us an overview on getting started with DNN’s latest 6.2 version all while taking us on a deep dive into its built-in social networking integration features. • SQL SERVER – Solution – Puzzle – Statistics are not Updated but are Created Once

  Earlier I asked puzzle why statistics are not updated. Read the complete details over here: Statistics are not Updated but are Created Once In the question I have demonstrated even though statistics should have been updated after lots of insert in the table are not updated.(Read the details SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update) In this example I have created following situation: Create Table Insert 1000 Records Check the Statistics Now insert 10 times more 10,000 indexes Check the Statistics – it will be NOT updated Auto Update Statistics and Auto Create Statistics for database is TRUE Now I have requested two things in the example 1) Why this is happening? 2) How to fix this issue? I have many answers – here is the how I fixed it which has resolved the issue for me. NOTE: There are multiple answers to this problem and I will do my best to list all. When we populate the data in the column the index is update – resulting execution plan to be invalided – this leads to the statistics to be updated in next execution of SELECT. This behavior does not happen on Heap or column where index is auto created. If you explicitly update the index, often you can see the statistics are updated as well. You can see this is for sure happening if you follow the tell of John Sansom. John Sansom‘s suggestion: That was fun! Although the column statistics are invalidated by the time the second select statement is executed, the query is not compiled/recompiled but instead the existing query plan is reused. It is the “next” compiled query against the column statistics that will see that they are out of date and will then in turn instantiate the action of updating statistics. You can see this in action by forcing the second statement to recompile. SELECT FirstName, LastName, City FROM ExecTable WHERE City = ‘New York’ option(RECOMPILE) GO Kevin Cross also have another suggestion: I agree with John. It is reusing the Execution Plan. Aside from OPTION(RECOMPILE), clearing the Execution Plan Cache before the subsequent tests will also work. i.e., run this before round 2: ————————————————————– – Clear execution plan cache before next test DBCC FREEPROCCACHE WITH NO_INFOMSGS; ————————————————————– Nice puzzle! Kevin As this was puzzle John and Kevin both got the correct answer, there was no condition for answer to be part of best practices. I know John and he is finest DBA around – his tremendous knowledge has always impressed me. John and Kevin both will agree that clearing cache either using DBCC FREEPROCCACHE and recompiling each query every time is for sure not good advice on production server. It is correct answer but not best practice. By the way, if you have better solution or have better suggestion please advise. I am open to change my answer and publish further improvement to this solution. On very separate note, I like to have clustered index on my Primary Key, which I have not mentioned here as it is out of the scope of this puzzle. • VLC 2.0.3 on Lubuntu 12.04: No audio?

  I am on Lubuntu 12.04, and I have installed VLC media player version 2.0.3. When I try and play an audio file, it appears to load fine, and the media position bar displays the progress, and it says it is playing, but I can't here any thing through my speakers. I can hear game audio, web audio, and audio from SMPlayer just fine, but with VLC, I can't here anything. It would eventually start working after I messed around with the audio settings, but it happened every restart. I eventually switched to SMPlayer, but now I need some of the features that VLC offers, but I still can't use VLC. At this point, the audio can not be heard at all, and the method I used before, messing around with the audio settings, isn't getting me anywhere. • Application Lifecycle Management Tools

  Leading a team comprised of three former teams means that we have three of everything.  Three places to gather requirements, three (actually eight or nine) places for customers to submit support requests, three places to plan and track work. We’ve been looking into tools that combine these features into a single product.  Not just Agile planning tools, but those that allow us to look in a single place for requirements, work items, and reports. One of the interesting choices is Software Planner by Automated QA (the makers of Test Complete).  It's a lovely tool with real end-to-end process support.  We’re probably not going to use it for one reason – cost.  I’m sure our company could get a discount, but it’s on a concurrent user license that isn’t cheap for a large number of users.  Some initial guesswork had us paying over $6,000 for 3 concurrent users just to get started with the Enterprise version.  Still, it’s intuitive, has great Agile capabilities, and has a reputation for excellent customer support. At the moment we’re digging deeper into Rational Team Concert by IBM.  Reading the docs on this product makes me want to submit my resume to Big Blue.  Not only does RTC integrate everything we need, but it’s free for up to 10 developers.  It has beautiful support for all phases of Scrum.  We’re going to bring the sales representative in for a demo. This marks one of the few times that we’re trying to resist the temptation to write our own tool.  And I think this is the first time that something so complex may actually be capably provided by an external source.   Hooray for less work! Right now, there are hundreds of little islands of planning, all busy answering questions for JavaOne: What sessions get selected? What goes in the Mason street tent (until a few weeks ago, Will there be a tent on Mason street?), What do the JUGS need? Which Oracle ACEs will be there? Can we do a surf theme at the OTN party? And, somehow, like an Iron Man suit, they all come together and work to make a great event. At least, we hope it will be great. That's for you to decide. • Ways to ensure unique instances of a class?

  I'm looking for different ways to ensure that each instance of a given class is a uniquely identifiable instance. For example, I have a Name class with the field name. Once I have a Name object with name initialised to John Smith I don't want to be able to instantiate a different Name object also with the name as John Smith, or if instantiation does take place I want a reference to the orginal object to be passed back rather than a new object. I'm aware that one way of doing this is to have a static factory that holds a Map of all the current Name objects and the factory checks that an object with John Smith as the name doesn't already exist before passing back a reference to a Name object. Another way I could think of off the top of my head is having a static Map in the Name class and when the constructor is called throwing an exception if the value passed in for name is already in use in another object, however I'm aware throwing exceptions in a constructor is generally a bad idea. Are there other ways of achieving this?

• Installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS

  On my laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 8.1. Felt I needed to see the competition for myself to establish which was a better OS. So I followed the channels to dual boot. All seemed fine and I accessed Ubuntu with no issues after selecting this from the menu to select the OS. I should add that the boot method was changed to legacy. However, since using Ubuntu, I no longer have the ability to select the OS. The laptop simply logs straight into Ubuntu. I therefore attempted to access the recovery options, only it appears the Windows 8 bootloader has somehow been corrupted as I am now told to use the Windows 8 recovery disc (which, as this was pre-installed - I do not have). Left with no other alternative, I have scoured these forums without success, and so I am hoping someone in the know (or who has experienced similar) can help. I have tried boot repair again without success. On rebooting I am only presented with a basic splash screen asking me to select Ubuntu, Memtest, Windows 8 Recovery or Windows 8 Bootloader (The bootloaders again require I insert the disc). However, if I'm to try using Ubuntu again then there is the risk this problem may come back. Again, I did not do anything manually - the installer did everything (with the exception of changing the boot to Legacy to allow the booting of another bootloader). LiveCD works but doesn't give me the options that I've seen here and as mentioned earlier, only boot recovery only gives me the options as mentioned earlier. Also this fails to load via USB (possibly because HDD comes before USB in the boot order?). Being used to a Windows environment, the Ubuntu (and Linux) environment is a dive at a less than comfortable depth at present (but one I fully intend to get to grips with - especially the commands being more common via Terminal).   I have a CentOS 5.2 server set up with Apache 2.2.3 and Tomcat 5.5.27. The server hosts multiple virtual hosts connected to multiple Tomcats. For instance we have one tomcat for development and testing and one tomcat for production. project.demo.us.com points to dev tomcat and project.us.com points to production tomcat. Now when I try to access http://project.demo.us.com/project/index.jsp, I get Tomcat's HTTP Status 404 - The requested resource () is not available. The same thing happens to hello.html so it's not working with static content either. Apache's access_log contains: 88.112.152.31 - - [10/Aug/2009:12:15:14 +0300] "GET /demo/index.jsp HTTP/1.1" 404 952 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090729 Firefox/3.5.2" I couldn't find any mention of the request in Tomcat's logs. If I shutdown this specific tomcat, I no longer get Tomcat's 404 but Apache's 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable, so I should be configuring the correct Tomcat. Is there something obvious that I'm missing? Is there any place where I could find out what path the Tomcat is using to look for requested files?

• Sharing internet to Ubuntu 12.04 VMWare guest

  Got the 12.04 distro and installed this on my Mac VMWare Fusion (Version 4.1.2). Install went fine and Ubuntu seemed to update itself during the install. Rebooted and now I cannot get Ubuntu to access the internet via my Macs Ethernet connection (Connected to a router) Have tried settings the VMWare network adaptor to NAT or bridged and Host only without success. In Ubuntu I have the eth0 set to Automatic DHCP. VMWare tools is installed as well. I know next to nothing about what to do here and net searches on both Stackoverflow and Superuser sites are producing not results for me. Could someone please help? What to eventually have Ubuntu run in the background as a development web server running Zend Framework and CE Server edition but need thew internet access to run updates etc on Ubuntu. I did succesfully get to a black screen which then prompts me to a username then password to then do anything ( assuming). Then i want to install ubuntu server with gui here the command i try with sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Which however give me the following error Err http... inRelease w Failed to fetch ht... So been ignored if i try the desktop one i get E: unable to locate package ubuntu E: unable to locate package desktop So i am assuming i am not connected to the internet, so i try the following command sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces here the output it gives me and i know my gateway on my laptop is 192.168.1.1 address: 192.168.1.148 netmask: 255.255.255.0 network: 192.168.1.0 broadcasts: 192.168.1.255 gateway: 192.168.1.1 Btw i do not know the command to get out of vi and saving it. • Video crashes with 10.10

  I have installed both the 64bit and 32 bit versions of 10.10 on my Compaq Presario PC. I first installed the 64 bit version of the OS.The video often crashed when switching user. It also went haywire occasionally when I visited some web-sites. I read that there may be some problems with the 64 bit OS. So I installed the 32 bit version on another disk. This version seemed even less well behaved. HP's model number for the computer is SR1838NX. The hardware is listed at http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00628274&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=1841793&prodTypeId=12454&printver=true#A0 I think the important info is that the chip set is "ATI Radeon Xpress 200" and the processor is "Athlon 64 (S) 3700+ 2.2 GHz" Has anyone else had video problems with similar machines? Is there a work around or an update? I have had previous versions of Ubuntu working on this machine and other flavors of Linux as well. Thanks in advance. John

• Active Directory remote versus local computer logon

  Hi, Hope some one can help a network/server noob understand how domains work in AD. I am in an organisation with 2 AD servers in 2 different countries, e.g. US and UK, and they set up the US and UK domains respectively. the accounts are set up such that all employees in both countries have a US\user and UK\user account. What is the difference if a UK user logon with US\user from a local UK computer, versus RDP (remote desktop) into a US server with US\user? Thanks for your help.

• PeopleSoft at Alliance 2012 Executive Forum

  Guest Posting From Rebekah Jackson This week I jointed over 4,800 Higher Ed and Public Sector customers and partners in Nashville at our annual Alliance conference.   I got lost easily in the hallways of the sprawling Gaylord Opryland Hotel. I carried the resort map with me, and I would still stand for several minutes at a very confusing junction, studying the map and the signage on the walls. Hallways led off in many directions, some with elevators going down here and stairs going up there. When I took a wrong turn I would instantly feel stuck, lose my bearings, and occasionally even have to send out a call for help.    It strikes me that the theme for the Executive Forum this year outlines a less tangible but equally disorienting set of challenges that our higher education customer’s CIOs are facing: Making Decisions at the Intersection of Business Value, Strategic Investment, and Enterprise Technology. The forces acting upon higher education institutions today are not neat, straight-forward decision points, where one can glance to the right, glance to the left, and then quickly choose the best course of action. The operational, technological, and strategic factors that must be considered are complex, interrelated, messy…and the stakes are high. Michael Horn, co-author of “Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns”, set the tone for the day. He introduced the model of disruptive innovation, which grew out of the research he and his colleagues have done on ‘Why Successful Organizations Fail’. Highly simplified, the pattern he shared is that things start out decentralized, take a leap to extreme centralization, and then experience progressive decentralization. Using computers as an example, we started with a slide rule, then developed the computer which centralized in the form of mainframes, and gradually decentralized to mini-computers, desktop computers, laptops, and now mobile devices. According to Michael, you have more computing power in your cell phone than existed on the planet 60 years ago, or was on the first rocket that went to the moon. Applying this pattern to Higher Education means the introduction of expensive and prestigious private universities, followed by the advent of state schools, then by community colleges, and now online education. Michael shared statistics that indicate 50% of students will be taking at least one on line course by 2014…and by some measures, that’s already the case today. The implication is that technology moves from being the backbone of the campus, the IT department’s domain, and pushes into the academic core of the institution. Innovative programs are underway at many schools like Bellevue and BYU Idaho, joined by startups and disruptive new players like the Khan Academy.   This presents both threat and opportunity for higher education institutions, and means that IT decisions cannot afford to be disconnected from the institution’s strategic plan. Subsequent sessions explored this theme.    Theo Bosnak, from Attain, discussed the model they use for assessing the complete picture of an institution’s financial health. Compounding the issue are the dramatic trends occurring in technology and the vendors that provide it. Ovum analyst Nicole Engelbert, shared her insights next and suggested that incremental changes are no longer an option, instead fundamental changes are affecting the landscape of enterprise technology in higher ed.    Nicole closed with her recommendation that institutions focus on the trends in higher education with an eye towards the strategic requirements and business value first. Technology then is the enabler.   The last presentation of the day was from Tom Fisher, Sr. Vice President of Cloud Services at Oracle. Tom runs the delivery arm of the Cloud Services group, and shared his thoughts candidly about his experiences with cloud deployments as well as key issues around managing costs and security in cloud deployments. Okay, we’ve covered a lot of ground at this point, from financials planning, business strategy, and cloud computing, with the possibility that half of the institutions in the US might not be around in their current form 10 years from now. Did I forget to mention that was raised in the morning session? Seems a little hard to believe, and yet Michael Horn made a compelling point. Apparently 100 years ago, 8 of the top 10 education institutions in the world were German. Today, the leading German school is ranked somewhere in the 40’s or 50’s. What will the landscape be 100 years from now? Will there be an institution from China, India, or Brazil in the top 10? As Nicole suggested, maybe US parents will be sending their children to schools overseas much sooner, faced with the ever-increasing costs of a US based education. Will corporations begin to view skill-based certification from an online provider as a viable alternative to a 4 year degree from an accredited institution, fundamentally altering the education industry as we know it?

• NSXMLParser and Geonames

  I'm trying to parse a call from Geonames with NSXMLParser in the iPhone SDK. I've used this before but for some reason I'm getting an empty dictionary back even though I get results back in a web browser. Can someone please point out what I may be doing wrong.
