  • Internet Forwarding With Qemu?

    - by ConfusedGuy
I'm using kvm and qemu to run a windows virtual machine, but I'm trying to get internet on that machine. I've been reading about all this bridging and stuff that is done to do that, but I was wondering if there was a simpler way, to just forward my internet connection (since I'm connected on the host machine) through qemu to the guest operating system. Is this possible? Thanks

  • How can I get FreeNAS to respond to libvirt shutdown requests

    - by ptomli
    I have a KVM VM of FreeNAS 0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127) running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I'm unable to convince the VM to shutdown from the host virsh shutdown freenas I would expect this to send some ACPI? trigger to the VM and FreeNAS then do what it's told. I'm not a FreeBSD fundi so I don't really know what packages or processes to poke to get this running. I have tried to convince powerd to run, but the VM cpus don't have the required freq entry Sysctl HW $ sysctl hw hw.machine: amd64 hw.model: QEMU Virtual CPU version 0.12.3 hw.ncpu: 1 hw.byteorder: 1234 hw.physmem: 523116544 hw.usermem: 463806464 hw.pagesize: 4096 hw.floatingpoint: 1 hw.machine_arch: amd64 hw.realmem: 536850432 hw.aac.iosize_max: 65536 hw.amr.force_sg32: 0 hw.an.an_cache_iponly: 1 hw.an.an_cache_mcastonly: 0 hw.an.an_cache_mode: dbm hw.an.an_dump: off hw.ata.to: 15 hw.ata.wc: 1 hw.ata.atapi_dma: 1 hw.ata.ata_dma_check_80pin: 1 hw.ata.ata_dma: 1 hw.ath.txbuf: 200 hw.ath.rxbuf: 40 hw.ath.regdomain: 0 hw.ath.countrycode: 0 hw.ath.xchanmode: 1 hw.ath.outdoor: 1 hw.ath.calibrate: 30 hw.ath.hal.swba_backoff: 0 hw.ath.hal.sw_brt: 10 hw.ath.hal.dma_brt: 2 hw.bce.msi_enable: 1 hw.bce.tso_enable: 1 hw.bge.allow_asf: 0 hw.cardbus.cis_debug: 0 hw.cardbus.debug: 0 hw.cs.recv_delay: 570 hw.cs.ignore_checksum_failure: 0 hw.cs.debug: 0 hw.cxgb.snd_queue_len: 50 hw.cxgb.use_16k_clusters: 1 hw.cxgb.force_fw_update: 0 hw.cxgb.singleq: 0 hw.cxgb.ofld_disable: 0 hw.cxgb.msi_allowed: 2 hw.cxgb.txq_mr_size: 1024 hw.cxgb.sleep_ticks: 1 hw.cxgb.tx_coalesce: 0 hw.firewire.hold_count: 3 hw.firewire.try_bmr: 1 hw.firewire.fwmem.speed: 2 hw.firewire.fwmem.eui64_lo: 0 hw.firewire.fwmem.eui64_hi: 0 hw.firewire.phydma_enable: 1 hw.firewire.nocyclemaster: 0 hw.firewire.fwe.rx_queue_len: 128 hw.firewire.fwe.tx_speed: 2 hw.firewire.fwe.stream_ch: 1 hw.firewire.fwip.rx_queue_len: 128 hw.firewire.sbp.tags: 0 hw.firewire.sbp.use_doorbell: 0 hw.firewire.sbp.scan_delay: 500 hw.firewire.sbp.login_delay: 1000 hw.firewire.sbp.exclusive_login: 1 hw.firewire.sbp.max_speed: -1 hw.firewire.sbp.auto_login: 1 hw.mfi.max_cmds: 128 hw.mfi.event_class: 0 hw.mfi.event_locale: 65535 hw.pccard.cis_debug: 0 hw.pccard.debug: 0 hw.cbb.debug: 0 hw.cbb.start_32_io: 4096 hw.cbb.start_16_io: 256 hw.cbb.start_memory: 2281701376 hw.pcic.pd6722_vsense: 1 hw.pcic.intr_mask: 57016 hw.pci.honor_msi_blacklist: 1 hw.pci.enable_msix: 1 hw.pci.enable_msi: 1 hw.pci.do_power_resume: 1 hw.pci.do_power_nodriver: 0 hw.pci.enable_io_modes: 1 hw.pci.host_mem_start: 2147483648 hw.syscons.kbd_debug: 1 hw.syscons.kbd_reboot: 1 hw.syscons.bell: 1 hw.syscons.saver.keybonly: 1 hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch: 0 hw.usb.uplcom.interval: 100 hw.usb.uvscom.interval: 100 hw.usb.uvscom.opktsize: 8 hw.wi.debug: 0 hw.wi.txerate: 0 hw.xe.debug: 0 hw.intr_storm_threshold: 1000 hw.availpages: 127714 hw.bus.devctl_disable: 0 hw.ste.rxsyncs: 0 hw.busdma.total_bpages: 32 hw.busdma.zone0.total_bpages: 32 hw.busdma.zone0.free_bpages: 32 hw.busdma.zone0.reserved_bpages: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.active_bpages: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.total_bounced: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.total_deferred: 0 hw.busdma.zone0.lowaddr: 0xffffffff hw.busdma.zone0.alignment: 2 hw.busdma.zone0.boundary: 65536 hw.clockrate: 2808 hw.instruction_sse: 1 hw.apic.enable_extint: 0 hw.kbd.keymap_restrict_change: 0 hw.acpi.supported_sleep_state: S3 S4 S5 hw.acpi.power_button_state: S5 hw.acpi.sleep_button_state: S3 hw.acpi.lid_switch_state: NONE hw.acpi.standby_state: S1 hw.acpi.suspend_state: S3 hw.acpi.sleep_delay: 1 hw.acpi.s4bios: 0 hw.acpi.verbose: 0 hw.acpi.disable_on_reboot: 0 hw.acpi.handle_reboot: 0 hw.acpi.cpu.cx_lowest: C1 Processes $ ps ax PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 0 ?? • recommendations for efficient offsite remote backup solution of vm's

    - by senorsmile
I am looking for recommendations for backing up my current 6 vm's(and soon to grow to up to 20). Currently I am running a two node proxmox cluster(which is a debian base using kvm for virtualization with a custom web front end to administer). I have two nearly identical boxes with amd phenom II x4's and asus motherboards. Each has 4 500 GB sata2 hdd's, 1 for the os and other data for the proxmox install, and 3 using mdadm+drbd+lvm to share the 1.5 TB's of storage between the two machines. I mount lvm images to kvm for all of the virtual machines. I currently have the ability to do live transfer from one machine to the other, typically within seconds(it takes about 2 minutes on the largest vm running win2008 with m$ sql server). I am using proxmox's built-in vzdump utility to take snapshots of the vm's and store those on an external harddrive on the network. I then have jungledisk service (using rackspace) to sync the vzdump folder for remote offsite backup. This is all fine and dandy, but it's not very scalable. For one, the backups themselves can take up to a few hours every night. With jungledisk's block level incremental transfers, the sync only transfers a small portion of the data offsite, but that still takes at least a half an hour. The much better solution would of course be something that allows me to instantly take the difference of two time points (say what was written from 6am to 7am), zip it, then send that difference file to the backup server which would instantly transfer to the remote storage on rackspace. I have looked a little into zfs and it's ability to do send/receive. That coupled with a pipe of the data in bzip or something would seem perfect. However, it seems that implementing a nexenta server with zfs would essentially require at least one or two more dedicated storage servers to serve iSCSI block volumes (via zvol's???) to the proxmox servers. I would prefer to keep the setup as minimal as possible (i.e. NOT having separate storage servers) if at all possible. I have also briefly read about zumastor. It looks like it could also do what I want, but it appears to have halted development in 2008. So, zfs, zumastor or other?

  • Scanning for new disks attached using virtio?

    - by larsks
I can successfully attach disks to a running KVM instance using virsh attach-disk... virsh attach-disk node-1 /dev/vg_lunsr/lun1 vdb Disk attached successfully ...but these new devices aren't seen by the guest without a reboot, which almost defeats the purpose of dynamic attachment. If these were SCSI devices I would use e.g. /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan to request the SCSI drivers to scan for new devices. Is there an equivalent capability for the virtio block driver?

  • How to programatically sense the iPhone mute switch?

    - by Olie
I can't seem to find in the SDK how to programatically sense the mute button/switch on the iPhone. When my app plays background music, it responds properly to the volume button without me having any code to follow that but, when I use the mute switch, it just keeps playing away. How do I test the position of mute? (NOTE: My program has its own mute switch, but I'd like the physical switch to override that.) Thanks!

  • How to Switch Chrome’s Default Search to International Google

    - by Erez Zukerman
Google Chrome’s default search engine is Google. This makes perfect sense; the only problem is that it uses localized Google – for example, Google France or Google Israel. This impacts the interface language, and sometimes even the text orientation. Here’s how you can fix this and get “international” Google results with an English interface. First, we need to figure out what search query we’re going to use. Go to Google.com and execute a simple query for a single word – say “cats”. If you get real-time results, hit Enter so that the address bar updates with the query URL. It should look something like this: http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=cats&aq=f&aqi=g1g-s1g3&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.&fp=369c8973645261b8 If you wish to customize your search further, click Advanced Search. For example, I would like Google to annotate results with the reading level they require, so I can see what’s going to be difficult to read: Latest Features How-To Geek ETC Macs Don’t Make You Creative! • How to Switch Mac OS X to Use OpenDNS or Google DNS

    - by The Geek
Are you still using your service provider’s DNS servers? If you’re on Comcast, you probably noticed their DNS servers completely died recently, taking down the internet—but anybody using the more reliable OpenDNS or Google DNS had no problems. Here’s how to set it up on your Mac OS X computer. There’s lots of other reasons to use OpenDNS or Google DNS other than just their rock-solid reliability—they are often much faster than your ISP’s DNS server, and in the case of OpenDNS, there’s loads of extra features like content filtering, typo correction, anti-phishing, and child protection controls. • Port binding conflicts with "switch user" on Windows 7

    - by C-dizzle
We are using the switch user function within Windows 7 under an active directory network. We have one application in particular that gives us an error: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted. bind Port 10001 Are there any other ports that can only be used at one time that might have an adverse effect on the other user? We try to mentor our users to use the log off function instead of switch user, but that doesn't always happen. As an alternative, is it possible to disable the 'switch user' button on our machines?

  • Using Ctrl-Tab to switch between tabs in Mac Terminal.app

    - by dkee
How can I make Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab switch between tabs in Terminal.app on a Mac (OS 10.4 and 10.5 specifically)? This is how I switch tabs in Firefox and Aquamacs, and Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-] is too awkward to me. I am aware of this related question: .../unable-to-switch-a-tab-efficiently-in-macs-terminal* And hence the Keyboard Shortcuts section of the System Preferences, but the dialog box for Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to accept Ctrl-Tab in the Keyboard Shortcut field. Is there a special keyboard sequence for inputting tabs (with modifiers) into a dialog box field on a Mac? Is there any other method that would allow me to customize Terminal.app in the way I desire? Not really a programming question, but I think the answer would be useful to other folks that program on Macs and would like to have some consistency between interfaces of different applications. Thanks! * Couldn't add the hyperlink as a new user

  • Does using a single cable to connect two switches create a bottleneck?

    - by Nick
I realise this may be a stupid question for some, but it's something I've always wondered about. Let's say we have two gigabit switches and all of the devices on the network are also gigabit. If 10 computers connected to switch A need to transfer large amounts of data to a server on Switch B (at the same time), is the maximum transfer speed of each connection limited by the bandwidth of the connection between the two switches? In other words, would each computer only be able to transfer at a speed of one gigabit divided by the 10 machines trying to use the "bridge" between switches? If so, are there any workarounds so that every device can use it's maximum speed from point to point?

  • Wall jacks to patch panel?

    - by rj454me
OK, I'm by no means a seasoned networking pro and I had no say so in the design of our current server room which is in dire need of an extreme makeover. Basically, in our server room we have 12 wall plates with 4 RJ-45 ports on each - 48 total RJ-45 ports. From these 48 ports is a spaghetti bowl of network cables feeding our servers located in a rack - there is no patch panel currently, just straight from the wall jack to each server. What I was wondering is, is it feasible to mount a 48 port patch panel in our server rack and feed into this patch panel from the wall jacks (of course nicely routing this cable through some new cable trays)? We really don't have the funds to mount the patch panel and have it fed directly from the switches in the telcom closet which is several hundred feet away. Current: Switch (Telcom Closet) - Wall Jacks - Servers Proposed: Switch (Telcom Closet) - Wall Jacks - Patch Panel - Servers

  • Using "enterprise" switches in home network?

    - by Industrial
Hi everyone, After more than 12 years working with computers, I am still way behind when it comes to networking, so please bear with me :) As of this Christmas, the number of computers in my home has increased and it's well about time to upgrade the current network hardware in order to offer LAN connection to all computers. Trying to find a cheap solution, A close friend offered me a great deal on a "enterprise-class" Switch from HP (more LAN ports than I would ever need), at the same price as what a brand new Netgear or D-link Switch with 6/8 ports would cost me in retail. Would it be common sense to get this one and start using it immediately and never again have to worry about running out of LAN connections, or am I taking on a bigger bite than what I could chew?

  • Is it worth it to switch from home-grown remote command interface to using JMX

    - by Sam Goldberg
Without knowing too much about JMX, I've always assumed that it would be the best approach for building in remote management to our standalone Java server application. Our server application has some minimal remote control capability, using text commands sent via TCP/IP socket to it. Using the home grown approach, it is fairly to add a new command. (Just create new command text, and the code to handle that in the message receiver). On the other hand, we have hardly implemented any commands, even though there are many things we would like to be able to execute remotely. I am trying to weigh the value of moving to incorporating JMX (learning it, and building the interfaces), versus just sticking with the home-grown approach. Does anyone have any experience or advice regarding changing an existing application to use JMX?

  • Switch Hosts With Gmail Account Attached

    - by Wade D Ouellet
Hi, I am transferring a client from their old host to my new one. Their domain-based gmail/apps account was connected to their old host, so when I changed the domain's name servers to the new host, naturally the gmail account stopped working. So I added the 7 MX records tho the new host's DNS and verified I own the domain on the new host's FTP but the email still isn't working. Is there something I'm missing? I added the MX records to the new host about two hours ago, is it possible it just takes longer than that? Also, outgoing mail seems to work. Members of the domain can't receive email though, just sends back an error. Thanks, Wade

  • Switch from encrypted partition to unencrypted (Error: cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available)

    - by Chris Lercher
I initially installed Ubuntu 11.04 with an encrypted file system (from the alternate install CD: Guided Partitioning, LVM encrypted). Now I wanted to change this setup to have my root file system on an unencrypted partition. I had the following setup before: /dev/mapper/my-root on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,commit=0,commit=0) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,noatime) I backed up /, reformatted /dev/sda5 (which had contained the encrypted LVM device) to an ext3 partition, and restored / to that partition. I edited /etc/fstab, removed the line /dev/mapper/my-root / ..., and added the line: /dev/sda5 / ext3 noatime,rw,errors=remount-ro,commit=0 0 1 I edited /etc/crypttab, and commented out the single entry. On reboot, I get the grub screen as usual, but then I get the message cryptsetup:evms_activate is not available, waiting for encrypted source device. I tried reinstalling Grub2 using a LiveCD with the ChRoot method, but that didn't make any difference. Why is Ubuntu still searching for an encrypted device?

  • Hyper-V extensible virtual switch disables network

    - by Sebastian Krysmanski
I just installed the Hyper-V role on my Windows Server 2012. It comes with something called a "Hyper-V extensible virtual switch". I assigned it to the only network card in my server. By doing so, the network card became useless/disabled/inactive/.. because the virtual switch disabled all features (IPv4, IPv6, Client for Microsoft Networks, ...) on the network adapter. Is this supposed to happen? I admit I've no idea what this "extensible virtual switch" actually does. A short explanation would be nice as well.

  • How to write your unit tests to switch between NUnit and MSTest

    - by Justin Jones
On my current project I found it useful to use both NUnit and MsTest for unit testing. When using ReSharper for running unit tests, it just simply works better with NUnit, and on large scale projects NUnit tends to run faster. We would have just simply used NUnit for everything, but MSTest gave us a few bonuses out of the box that were hard to pass up. Namely code coverage (without having to shell out thousands of extra dollars for the privilege) and integrated tests into the build process. I’m one of those guys who wants the build to fail if the unit tests don’t pass. If they don’t pass, there’s no point in sending that build on to QA. So making the build work with MsTest is easiest if you just create a unit test project in your solution. This adds the right references and project type Guids in the project file so that everything just automagically just works. Then (using NuGet of course) you add in NUnit. At the top of your test file, remove the using statements that refer to MsTest and replace it with the following: #if NUNIT using NUnit.Framework; #else using TestFixture = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestClassAttribute; using Test = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestMethodAttribute; using TestFixtureSetUp = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestInitializeAttribute; using SetUp = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestInitializeAttribute; using Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting; #endif Basically I’m taking the NUnit naming conventions, and redirecting them to MsTest. You can go the other way, of course. I only chose this direction because I had already written the tests as NUnit tests. NUnit and MsTest provide largely the same functionality with slightly differing class names. There’s few actual differences between then, and I have not run into them on this project so far. To run the tests as NUnit tests, simply open up the project properties tab and add the compiler directive NUNIT. Remove it, and you’re back in MsTest land.

  • How to make the switch to C++11?

    - by Overv
I've been programming in C++ for a while now, but mostly thinks centered around the low-level features of C++. By that I mean mostly working with pointers and raw arrays. I think this behavior is known as using C++ as C with classes despite me only having tried C recently for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised how languages like C# and Java hide these details away in convenient standard library classes like Dictionaries and Lists. I'm aware that the C++ standard library has many convenience containers like vectors, maps and strings as well and C++11 only adds to this by having std:: array and ranged loops. How do I best learn to make use of these modern language features and which are suitable for which moments? Is it correct that software engineering in C++ nowadays I'd mostly free of manual memory management? Lastly, which compiler should I use to make the most of the new standard? Visual Studio has excellent debugging tools, but even VS2012 seems to have terrible C++11 support.
