• Can I grant permissions on files in windows 7 using a security identifier from another machine

  I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup). • Are you aware of any client-side malware that sends lots of junk requests for .gifs?

  I am getting dozens of 404 errors on my site that are requests for gif's with apparently random names, like 4273uaqa.gif and 5pwowlag.gif. I see that most of them are coming from one user. I assume something is happening in the background on her machine without her knowledge -- a malware thing on the client. Have you seen this behavior before, and do you know what sort of malware might cause it? Would love to advise my customer that s/he has an issue. I'd also like to stop getting these 404 reports. • Cannot copy files from external USB HDD to computer

  Hello I have a HDD disk connected with a USB converter to my computer. It consists of two partitions, the first one is mounted automatically and I can grab all the files from it, but the second one I have to mount manually as a root in the command line, if I try to open it with nautilus it gives an error. The drive where the problem is is drive sdb1, sdb2 has the same settings but works fine. I am using Debian Wheezy. This is the fstab: /dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 auto defaults,gid=disk,umask=0777 0 0 /dev/sdb2 /media/usb1 auto defaults,gid=disk,umask=0777 0 0 And when I try to copy the files with this command (as root) cp -vr /media/usb0/* /home/user/Videos/ I get these types of errors: cp: reading `/media/usb0/.lang/file.ext': Permission denied cp: failed to extend `/home/user/Videos/.lang/file.ext': Permission denied How can I at least copy the files to my main HDD? I don't need to adjust them I only need to copy them!

• Suspend fails (reboot on resume) and no hibernate option

  Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 removed hibernate option for me and introduced the problem where by after entering standby (being indicated by blinking amber LED on my laptop) I cannot resume my session. Instead I get a crash and system reboots (crash comes instantly on trying to resume). Tried clean install to eliminate possibility of an upgrade issue but its still persistent. All latest updates installed. Tried looking for an answer to this but still no joy. Laptop is Sony VGN-FW41E.

• Full Backup & Restore for Windows Vista

  I'm looking for a freeware or low cost application that will backup everything, including registry on Windows Vista Home Premium and to restore from a CDROM disk. The destination is an external hard drive on USB 2.0. Searching on SuperUser and Stack Overflow show articles, but don't mention full backup of the registry and complete restore using CDROM. I would also like to have compressed output and incremental backups. One article mentions CloneZilla, but their web page says that the incremental feature is not supported. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1. I need to backup 200 GB onto a 230 GB drive and would like to have multiple backups (thus the need for compression). Other requirements: Single file restore Quality is more important than performance. Application must run on Windows Vista. Extra: Run as daemon or background task on 4 user system. Thanks

• Suggested ways of collecting 1000's of links to MSM media articles

  I'm currently running a modified Wordpress site that is uniquely designed to simply publish links to other sites, similar to The Drudge Report. Right now I have a few dozen Google Alerts setup and go through each result manually and if it matches a few niche keywords I'm working with, then I add a link to the article to my site. I do the manual checking because sometimes Google Alerts finds links to sites that belong to service providers, organizations, or products, but all I want are mainstream news articles. So my question is there a more efficient - and ideally automated - way to go about performing highly qualitative searches and aggregating such links?

  I am not sure if this is even possible but I have watched a few videos with programming examples where it seems like the program is being written in some kind of command prompt rather than a nice graphical compiler. Im just curious as to what might be going on in these videos. • Can't find second partition on encrypted drive with two partitions

  I have a drive with two partitions, a system partition (Windows 7) and a partition just for data. Both are encrypted with the same password. I didn't had any problems, but yesterday my laptop gets broken. Now, I'm trying to connect the drive via USB to a new laptop and read it. The problem is, that I only see the system partition, not the one with my data. When I click on "Select Device", I can see my drive as "Harddisk 1" with 300 gb. But I only see a single partition "Partition1" with 117 gb. I'm unable to find the second one. It's not a hidden partition. Any ideas? Thanks.

  I'm working on an MVC-ish app (I'm not very experienced with MVC, hence the "-ish"). My model and data access layer are hard to test because they're very tightly coupled, so I'm trying to uncouple them. What is the nature of the relationship between them? Should just the model know about the DAL? Should just the DAL know about the model? Or should both the model and the DAL be listeners of the other? In my specific case, it's: a web application the model is client-side (javascript) the data is accessed from the back-end using Ajax persistence/back-end is currently PHP/MySQL, but may have to switch to Python/GoogleDataStore on the GAE

  I am a 6th year medical student and I'm working on my thesis. I have no experience with programming whatsoever, a friend recommended me to post my question here. I am strugling with the following problem: I have data of 400 patients, stored in 400 different excel files. Each file contains 34 columns in a specific order, let's say A to Z. The order is the same in each of these 400 files. Now I need to a make a new excel document that contains the first column of each patient. So I need all the first columns of my 400 different excel files, lined up next to each other in a new document. Preferebally in the form of a automatic script. After that I want to do the exact same thing but for the second column, then the third and so on. This is probably a problem that has already been solved. Otherwise could someone help me out? • I've created a software RAID on SUSE EL 10 and now I need to monitor it.......

  I have created a Software Raid using the yast2 GUI on SUSE ES 10/11. The raid works great and it's a raid 5. I have 5 Drives they are cheap 2GB Cases that have 2 - 1TB Drives in each case (Serial ATA Drives) and I connect them in via Esata to the motherboard. The problem I have as this is "cheap" storage when of the the 5 drives goes out on the RAID I seem to have no logs of any issues and it get's harder and harder to write to it until it dies. I use SAMBA to mount the 4TB parition to my PC's in my home on a GIG network. My question is this, are there any good (Free) tools in Linux to monitor a raid or the drives on the raid to detect any problems??? I haven't found any yet and was just wondering if some exist.

(console applications in C++) I want to find a summer job/internship that would help me build my skill set. • Syncing Multiple Google Calendars and with Outlook and Android

  Perhaps this is a multipart question, but I deal with a lot of calendars in my life, and want to know if there is some way to sync them all together, and maintain appropriate privacy. So I have a family calendar that my ex and I maintain for kid events, and I have a personal calendar for my own life, and I have an Outlook work calendar, for work. Ideally I'd look at my calendar on my Android phone. Is it possible to sync them all together? Is it possible for there to be one calendar to rule them all on my phone, but have the other calendars blank out spaces that are from other calendars, but only show the blanked out without the details. (I don't want my date with Miss Hottie to appear that way on the family calendar, and I probably don't want my visit to the proctologist to appear in the corporate exchange server.) Are there tools available to do this? Bonus question, can I do the same with my to do lists? Double bouns question -- how can I solve world hunger and help us to all live together in peace? :-)

• Website with sections in Drupal?

  What is the best way to create a website with sections in Drupal? Users need to be able to add, remove, and nest pages fairly easily. Pages added to a section should have an appropriate URL, like "/[section name]/[page title]". This seems like a straightforward task, but I can't find the right combination of tools to do it. Subsite comes close, but for some odd reason, doesn't set up the correct content paths. The closest I got was creating a book for each subsection, but that feels like I'm using the wrong tool for the job. Edited with my solution: I used organic groups with pathauto. I set pathauto so that pages in groups had URLs that were of the form [group path]/[page title].

• Outlook connected to exchange does not send email

  I have multiple machines with Outlook 2010 connected to RackSpace hosted exchange server. Everything works fine, but emails send after a while since outlook started will not leave the outbox. Clicking Send & Receive will display the progress bar at 100% completed with no errors, but is not really finishing. The Cancel All button is still active. The emails in the outbox are bold & italic, so ready to be send. When I close outlook and start it again, the mails are sent immediately without problems. I have tried the following: Checked if there are any third party addins: only Microsoft Add ins Checked if the virus scanner is blocking anything, but McAfee is not doing this. Checked and Repaired the .ost file Increased the server time-out from 30 seconds to 60 seconds Nothing helped. Any suggestions?

• What location to put bootloader, when running multiple drives and partition

  I have Win8 on my desktop, where a 120G SSD is used to run windows and some select applications, while I have a 2TB HDD to provide basic file storage and where possible, install applications instead of on the SSD. I want to install Ubuntu on a new partition of the HDD (I allocated 300GB, with 5GB swap file). I've used a USB to install the OS, which seemed to have done the job. However, after prompting for a restart, I can no longer boot to ubuntu. During instillation I was confused about where to install the "boot loader instillation". I ended up selecting "/dev/stb" because I figured I would be able to boot with BIOS by selecting the HDD drive as a priority over the SSD. The bootloader is a large part of where I think I went wrong. My partition system looked something like this: /dev/sta ... //SSD ~120 GB /dev/sta1 NTFS (350 MB) //Win8System /dev/sta2 NTFS (118 GB) //Win8C-Drive /dev/stb ... //HDD ~2TB /dev/stb1 NTFS (1563 GB) //FileStorage /dev/stb5 Free Space (300 GB) //Space I want to use for Linux (NOTE: Created two partitions from the 300GB, ~5GB and 295GB. stb5,stb6.) It'd be great if I could get an explanation of what drive you'd select for the boot loader and why, and what selections won't work with regards to the Boot Loader Instillation. I think I understand what Grub is, but I have no idea on how to use it, or play around with it. I seem to be able to get back into OS from my usb, however I believe it's just showing me a preview/trial of Ubuntu (ie, can't access any of the system NTFS drives). Note, if I try to install from the USB again, it will recognize that a version of Ubuntu 13.10 exists on the system. Apologies in advance, have used windows all my life, don't really know to much about Linux at all.
