  • subset in geom_point SOMETIMES returns full dataset, instead of none.

    - by Andreas
    I ask the following in the hope that someone might come up with a generic description about the problem.Basically I have no idea whats wrong with my code. When I run the code below, plot nr. 8 turns out wrong. Specifically the subset in geom_point does not work the way it should. (update: With plot nr. 8 the whole dataset is plottet, instead of only the subset). If somebody can tell me what the problem is, I'll update this post. while printing out utf-8 characters onto a webpage, if encapsulate them with they get emboldened, but anything else, the page turns blank. • how to use ggplot conditional on data

    - by Andreas
    I asked this question and it seams ggplot2 currently has a bug with empty data.frames. Therefore I am trying to check if the dataframe is empty, before I make the plot. But what ever I come up with, it gets really ugly, and doesn't work. So I am asking for your help. example data: SOdata <- structure(list(id = 10:55, one = c(7L, 8L, 7L, NA, 7L, 8L, 5L, 7L, 7L, 8L, NA, 10L, 8L, NA, NA, NA, NA, 6L, 5L, 6L, 8L, 4L, 7L, 6L, 9L, 7L, 5L, empty dataframe, which sometimes (!) causes ggplot2 to plot all the data instead of none of the data. geom_point(data = SOdata[SOdata[[y]] > high,], position=position_jitter(w=0.1, h=0),col="green", alpha=0.5)+ This is kindda of important to me, and I am really stuck trying to find a solution. Any help that will get me started is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • How to represent a Board Panel in Java for a game ? [+code]

    - by FILIaS
    I wanna fix a 2D board for a game. I've already fixed other panels for the Gui and everything goes well. But the panel for the board cant be printed on the window. I'm a bit confused about it as i think i've followed the same ideas as for the others panels i need. Here's what i've done: EDIT:*EDIT* what i'm trying to do is fix a board panel for the game according to the dimensions of the it,hold every square in an array in order to use it after wherever it;s needed. I draw each little square of it with the method draw and put it back to the panel. So, each square on the board is a panel. This is the idea. But as u can see. There are troubles/errors on it. EDIT: code updated. just found a part of the problem. i thought first that i had set background to squared, but i didnt. with this one it appears on the panel a wide black "column". Unfortunately,still none squares. :( One More EDIT: Also,i realized that draw method is never called. when i put the draw method in the following method i can see the squares but they remain small. I redefine them with setSize but still no change. /** *Method used to construct the square in the area of the *gui's grid. In this stage a GUISquare array is being constructed, * used in the whole game as *a mean of changing a square graphical state. *@param squares is the squares array from whom the gui grid will be *constructed. *@see getSquare about the correspondance beetween a squareModel and * a GUISquare. */ private void initBoardPanel(SquareModel[][] squares){ BoardPanel.setLayout(new GridLayout(height ,width )); //set layout SquareRenderer[][] Squares; JPanel[][] grid; Squares=new GUISquare[height][width()]; grid=new JPanel[height()][width()]; for (int i=0; i<height(); i++){ for (int j=0; j<width() ; j++){ grid[i][j] = new JPanel( ); SquareRenderer kout=new SquareRenderer(i,j); koutaki.setSquare(myGame.getSquares()[i][j]); if (myGame.getSquares()[i][j] instanceof SimpleSquareModel){ kout.draw(i,j,"");} else { kout.draw(i,j); } kout.setVisible(true); kout.setBackground(Color.BLACK); kout.setSize(50,50); Squares[i][j]= kout; grid[i][j].setSize(50,50); grid[i][j].setVisible(true); grid[i][j].setBackground(Color.BLACK); BoardPanel.add(kout); BoardPanel.setVisible(true); BoardPanel.setBackground(Color.WHITE); } } this.add(BoardPanel,BorderLayout.WEST); // this.pack(); //sets appropriate size for frame this.setVisible(true); //makes frame visible } IMPLEMENTED BY SQUARERENDERER: /** * Transformer for Snake/Ladder * <br>This method is used to display a square on the screen. */ public void draw(int i,int j) { JPanel panel = new JPanel(); panel.setLayout(new BorderLayout()); JLabel label1 = new JLabel("Move To"+myGame.getSquares()[i][j].getGoTo()); JLabel label2 = new JLabel(""+myGame.getSquares()[i][j].getSquare()); JSeparator CellSeparator = new JSeparator(orientation); panel.add(CellSeparator); panel.setForeground(Color.ORANGE); panel.add(label2, BorderLayout.NORTH); panel.add(label1, BorderLayout.CENTER); }

  • Snake game, can't add new rectangles?

    - by user1814358
    I had seen some problem on other forum, and i tried to solve them but unsuccesfully, now is too intersting for me and i just need to solve this for my ego... lol Main problem is when snake eat first food, snake added one rectangle, when snake eat second food nothings changed? When snake head position and food position are same, then i try to add another rectangle, i have list where i stored rectangles coordinates x and y. What do you think, how i can to solve this problem? I think that i'm so close, but my brain has stopped. :( code: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace Zmijice { enum Kontrole { Desno,Levo,Gore,Dole,Stoj } public partial class Zmijice : Form { int koox; int kooy; private int x; private int y; private int c; private int b; private const int visina=20; //width private const int sirina=20; //height //private int m = 20; //private int n = 20; private List<int> SegmentX = new List<int>(); private List<int> SegmentY = new List<int>(); Random rnd = new Random(); private Kontrole Pozicija; public Zmijice() { InitializeComponent(); //slucajne pozicije pri startu x = rnd.Next(1, 20) * 20; y = rnd.Next(1, 20) * 20; c = rnd.Next(1, 20) * 20; b = rnd.Next(1, 20) * 20; Pozicija = Kontrole.Stoj; //stop on start } private void Tajmer_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Stoj) { //none } if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Desno) { x += 20; } else if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Levo) { x -= 20; } else if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Gore) { y -= 20; } else if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Dole) { y += 20; } Invalidate(); } private void Zmijice_KeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) { if (e.KeyCode == Keys.Down) { Pozicija = Kontrole.Dole; } else if (e.KeyCode == Keys.Up) { Pozicija = Kontrole.Gore; } else if (e.KeyCode == Keys.Right) { Pozicija = Kontrole.Desno; } else if (e.KeyCode == Keys.Left) { Pozicija = Kontrole.Levo; } } private void Zmijice_Paint(object sender, PaintEventArgs e) { int counter = 1; //ako je pojela hranu if (x==c && y==b) { counter++; c = rnd.Next(1, 20); //nova pozicija hrrane c = c * 20; b = rnd.Next(1, 20); b = b * 20; //povecaj zmijicu SegmentX.Add(x); SegmentY.Add(y); //label1.Text = SegmentX.Count().ToString() + " " + SegmentY.Count().ToString(); //left if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Levo) { koox = x+20; kooy = y; } //right if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Desno) { koox = x-20; kooy = y; } //up if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Gore) { koox = x; kooy = y+20; } //down if (Pozicija == Kontrole.Dole) { koox = x; kooy = y-20; } } foreach (int k in SegmentX) { foreach (int l in SegmentY) { e.Graphics.FillRectangle(Brushes.Orange, koox, kooy, sirina, visina); } } koox = x; kooy = y; e.Graphics.FillRectangle(Brushes.DarkRed, x, y, sirina, visina); e.Graphics.FillRectangle(Brushes.Aqua, c, b, sirina, visina); } } }

  • What is wrong here (will update): subset in geom_point does not work as expected

    - by Andreas
    I ask the following in the hope that someone might come up with a generic description about the problem.Basically I have no idea whats wrong with my code. When I run the code below, plot nr. 8 turns out wrong. Specifically the subset in geom_point does not work the way it should. If somebody can tell me what the problem is, I'll update this post. • Little Regular Expression (against HTML) help

    - by Marcos Placona
    Hi, I have the following HTML <p>Some text <a title="link" href="http://link.com/" target="_blank">my link</a> more text <a title="link" href="http://link.com/" target="_blank">more link</a>.</p> <p>Another paragraph.</p> <p>[code:cf]</p> <p>&lt;cfset ArrFruits = ["Orange", "Apple", "Peach", "Blueberry", </p> <p>"Blackberry", "Strawberry", "Grape", "Mango", </p> <p>"Clementine", "Cherry", "Plum", "Guava", </p> <p>"Cranberry"]&gt;</p> <p>[/code]</p> <p>Another line</p> <p><img src="http://image.jpg" alt="Array" /> </p> <p>More text</p> <p>[code:cf]</p> <p>&lt;table border="1"&gt;</p> <p> &lt;cfoutput&gt;</p> <p> &lt;cfloop array="#GroupsOf(ArrFruits, 5)#" index="arrFruitsIX"&gt;</p> <p>  &lt;tr&gt;</p> <p> &lt;cfloop array="#arrFruitsIX#" index="arrFruit"&gt;</p> <p>     &lt;td&gt;#arrFruit#&lt;/td&gt;</p> <p> &lt;/cfloop&gt;</p> <p>  &lt;/tr&gt;</p> <p> &lt;/cfloop&gt;</p> <p> &lt;/cfoutput&gt;</p> <p>&lt;/table&gt;</p> <p>[/code]</p> <p>With an output that looks like:</p> <p><img src="another_image.jpg" alt="" width="342" height="85" /></p> What I'm trying to do, is write a regular expression that will remove all the or , and whenever it finds a , it will replace it with a line-break. So far, my pattern looks like this: /\<p\>(.*?)(<\/p>)/g And I'm replacing the matches with: $1\n It all looks good, but it's also replacing the contents inside the [code][/code] tags, which in this case should not replace the tags at all, so as a result, i would lkike to get rid of the tags, when the content isn't inside the [code] tags. I can't ever get negation right, I know it will be something along the lines of \<p\>^\[code*\](.*?)(<\/p>) But obviously this doesn't work :-) Could anyone please lend me a hand with this regex? BTW, I know I shouldn't be using regular expressions to parse HTML at all. I'm fully aware of that, but still, for this specific case, I'd like to use regex. Thanks in advance

  • What's wrong with this jQuery? It isn't working as intended

    - by Doug Smith
    Using cookies, I want it to remember the colour layout of the page. (So, if they set the gallery one color and the body background another color, it will save that on refresh. But it doesn't seem to be working. jQuery: $(document).ready(function() { if (verifier == 1) { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); } if (verifier == 2) { $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); } if (verifier == 3) { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); } $('#set_cookie').click(function() { var color = $('#set_cookie').val(); $.cookie('test_cookie', color); }); $('#set_page').click(function() { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); var verifier = 1; }); $('#set_gallery').click(function() { $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); var verifier = 2; }); $('#set_both').click(function() { $('body').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); $('#gallery').css('background', $.cookie('test_cookie')); var verifier = 3; }); }); HTML: <p>Please select a background color for either the page's background, the gallery's background, or both.</p> <select id="set_cookie"> <option value="#1d375a" selected="selected">Default</option> <option value="black">Black</option> <option value="blue">Blue</option> <option value="brown">Brown</option> <option value="darkblue">Dark Blue</option> <option value="darkgreen">Dark Green</option> <option value="darkred">Dark Red</option> <option value="fuchsia">Fuchsia</option> <option value="green">Green</option> <option value="grey">Grey</option> <option value="#d3d3d3">Light Grey</option> <option value="#32cd32">Lime Green</option> <option value="#f8b040">Macaroni</option> <option value="#ff7300">Orange</option> <option value="pink">Pink</option> <option value="purple">Purple</option> <option value="red">Red</option> <option value="#0fcce0">Turquoise</option> <option value="white">White</option> <option value="yellow">Yellow</option> </select> <input type="button" id="set_page" value="Page's Background" /><input type="button" id="set_gallery" value="Gallery's Background" /><input type="button" id="set_both" value="Both" /> </div> </div> </body> </html> Thanks so much for the help, I appreciate it. jsFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/hL6Ye/

  • Does anyone know how to layout a JToolBar that does't move or re-size any components placed in it?

    - by S1.Mac
    Can anyone help with this problem i'm trying to create a JToolBar and I want all its components to be fixed in size and position. I'v tried a few different layout managers but they all center and/or re-size the components when the frame its in is re-sized. here is an example using GridbagLayout, I have also used the default layout manager using the toolbar.add( component ) method but the result is the same : ' import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.Component; import java.awt.Dimension; import java.awt.GridBagConstraints; import java.awt.GridBagLayout; import javax.swing.*; public class ToolBarTest extends JFrame { private JToolBar toolbar; private JPanel mainPanel; private JPanel toolBarPanel; private JButton aButton; private JCheckBox aCheckBox; private JList aList; private Box toolbarBox; private GridBagConstraints toolbarConstraints; private GridBagLayout toolbarLayout; private JLabel shapeLabel; private JComboBox<ImageIcon> shapeChooser; private JLabel colorLabel; private JComboBox colorChooser; private String colorNames[] = { "Black" , "Blue", "Cyan", "Dark Gray", "Gray", "Green", "Light Gray", "Magenta", "Orange", "Pink", "Red", "White", "Yellow", "Custom" }; private String shapeNames[] = { "Line", "Oval", "Rectangle", "3D Rectangle","Paint Brush", "Rounded Rectangle" }; public ToolBarTest() { setLayout( new BorderLayout() ); setDefaultCloseOperation( JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE ); setSize( 500, 500 ); add( createToolBar(), BorderLayout.PAGE_START ); setVisible( true ); } public void addToToolbar( Component component, int row, int column ) { toolbarConstraints.gridx = column; toolbarConstraints.gridy = row; toolbarConstraints.anchor = GridBagConstraints.WEST; toolbarConstraints.fill = GridBagConstraints.NONE; toolbarConstraints.weightx = 0; toolbarConstraints.weighty = 0; toolbarConstraints.gridwidth = 1; toolbarConstraints.gridheight = 1; toolbarLayout.setConstraints( component, toolbarConstraints ); toolbar.add( component ); }// end addToToolbar public final JToolBar createToolBar() { toolbarLayout = new GridBagLayout(); toolbarConstraints = new GridBagConstraints(); // create the tool bar which holds the items to draw toolbar = new JToolBar(); toolbar.setBorderPainted(true); toolbar.setLayout( toolbarLayout ); toolbar.setFloatable( true ); shapeLabel = new JLabel( "Shapes: " ); addToToolbar( shapeLabel, 0, 1 ); String iconNames[] = { "PaintImages/Line.jpg", "PaintImages/Oval.jpg", "PaintImages/Rect.jpg", "PaintImages/3DRect.jpg","PaintImages/PaintBrush.jpg", "PaintImages/RoundRect.jpg"}; ImageIcon shapeIcons[] = new ImageIcon[ shapeNames.length ]; // create image icons for( int shapeButton = 0; shapeButton < shapeNames.length; shapeButton++ ) { shapeIcons[ shapeButton ] = new ImageIcon( iconNames[ shapeButton ] ); }// end for shapeChooser = new JComboBox< ImageIcon >( shapeIcons ); shapeChooser.setSize( new Dimension( 50, 20 )); shapeChooser.setPrototypeDisplayValue( shapeIcons[ 0 ] ); shapeChooser.setSelectedIndex( 0 ); addToToolbar( shapeChooser, 0, 2 ); colorLabel = new JLabel( "Colors: " ); addToToolbar( colorLabel, 0, 3 ); colorChooser = new JComboBox( colorNames ); addToToolbar( colorChooser, 0, 4 ); return toolbar; }// end createToolBar public static void main( String args[] ) { new ToolBarTest(); }// end main }// end class ToolBarTest'

  • Accordion "growing out" from its container - in IE7/8

    - by Richard Knop
    I think this problem is best explained by images. This is how my accordion looks: When you click on the small plus/minus icons the slides under each chapter will expand/collapse. However when the content in the accordion grows too tall, it grows out from its container. So if I click on more plus icons the accordion will look like this (not pretty): As you can see, the container is not growing taller together with the accordion and it does not look good. This problem only occurs in IE7 and IE8. It works in Firefox and Chrome. The HTML looks like this (simplified): <div id="content"> <div class="box2 rounded-corners"> <div class="chapters"> <h3><a href="/clientarea/view/archived-course/teid/133">Obsah</a></h3> <div id="accordion"> <ul> ... // accordion content - too long ... // accordion content - too long </ul> <div class="clear">&nbsp;</div> </div> <div class="clear">&nbsp;</div> </div> <div class="training-body"> ... // content to the right of the accordion </div> </div> </div> The CSS, again siplified: html, body { height: 100%; width: 100%; overflow: auto; } #content { background: white url('/images/background_middle.png') left top repeat-x; padding: 13px; min-height: 40em; height: auto !important; height: 40em; } /* this is the div with rounded corners */ #content .box2 { background: white; padding: 0 15px 15px; border: 1px solid #C5E3F8; position: relative; } /* left sidebar 98 #content div.chapters { float: left; width: 224px; } /* orange heading "OBSAH" */ #content div.chapters h3 { color: #ff6e19; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: .9em; text-align: center; padding-bottom: .5em; margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 0; } #content div.chapters h3 a { color: #ff6e19; } /* accordion */ #accordion { width: 226px; border-top: 1px solid #c5e3f8; } #accordion ul { padding-left: 0; margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0; margin-left: 0; } /* area to the right of the accordion */ #content div.training-body { float: left; padding-left: 0px; width: 748px; line-height: 1.3em; }

  • clock and date showing on a live site but not on localhost

    - by grumpypanda
    I've got clock.swf and date.swf working fine on a live site, now I am using the same code to set up a local develop environment. Everything is working well except the clock.swf and date.swf stopped working on localhost. Two same yellow errors "You need to update your Flash plugin. Click here if you want to continue." but of course my Flash player is up to date since the live site is working fine. I'll post the code below which I think has caused the error. I've been searching online for the last couple of hours but no luck, anyone has got into an issue like this before? What can be the possible cause? Any help is appreciated. This is on the index.php, I can post more code here if needed. <?php embed_flash("swf/clock.swf", CLOCK_WIDTH, CLOCK_HEIGHT, "8", '', "flashcontent");?> <?php embed_flash("swf/date.swf", DATE_WIDTH, DATE_HEIGHT, "8", '', "flashcontent_date");?> configure.php define('CLOCK_WIDTH', '450'); define('CLOCK_HEIGHT', ''); define('DATE_WIDTH', '440'); define('DATE_HEIGHT', ''); flash_function.php <?php function embed_flash($name, $w, $h, $version, $bgcolor, $id) { $cacheBuster = rand(); $padTop = $h/3; ?> <style> a.noflash:link, a.noflash:visited, a.noflash:active {color: #1860C2; text-decoration: none; background:#FFFFFF;} a.noflash:hover {color:#000; text-decoration:none; background:#EEEEEE;} .message { width: <?=$w;?>px; font-size:12px; font-weight:normal; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 5px; color: #EEE; background: orange;"} </style> <div id="<?=$id; ?>" align="center"> <noscript> <div class="message"> Please enable <a href="https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/answer.py?answer=12654" target="_blank" class="noflash">&nbsp;JavaScript&nbsp;</a> to view this page properly. </div> </noscript> <div class="message"> You need to update your Flash plugin. • Encoding GBK2312 Condundrum

    - by user792271
    I am an amateur coder and I have a small problem. My goal is to have one text input with two buttons. The first button uses a bit of Javascript called SundayMorning to translate the text (to Chinese) The second button submits the text to a URL. The URl requires that Chinese text be encoded it in GBK2312 character set. I have duct taped together various found code to the result I have now. Due to the finicky behavior of the SundayMorning Javascript, my solution is to have two input boxes, the second of which I will hide. Right now, this doesn't work: I am unable to encode the Chinese in GBK2312, no matter what I try. BONUS CONUNDRUM: The second box copies my input letter by letter as I type, but does not copy the Chinese translation that the Javascript returns. Sorry for my janky amateur code. I defer to those more clever, if you have any kind suggestions. <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=GB2312" /> <script type='text/javascript' Src='https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.1/jquery.min.js'> </script> ///THIS JS TRANSLATES THE TEXT INLINE <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.sundaymorning.js"> </script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $('#example3').sundayMorningReset(); $('#example3 input[type=image]').click(function(evt) { $.sundayMorning( $('#example3 input[type=text]').val(),{source:'en', destination:'ZH', menuLeft:evt.pageX, menuTop:evt.pageY},function(response) {$('#example3 input[type=text]').val(response.translation);});});}); </script> /// ///THIS PUTS THE CONTENT OF THE TRANSLATION BOX INTO THE SUBMISSION BOX <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ var $url = $("#url"); $("#track").keyup(function() { $url.val(this.value);}); $("#track").blur(function() { $url.val(this.value);});}); </script> ///THIS PUTS THE CONTENT OF THE SUBMISSION INSIDE A URL <SCRIPT type="text/javascript"> function goToPage(url) { var initial = "http://example.com/"; var extension = ".html"; document.something.action=initial+url+extension; } </SCRIPT> </head> <body> <div id="featured"> <div id="example3"> <input type="text" name="track" id="track" value="" class="box"onkeydown="javascript:if (event.which || event.keyCode){if ((event.which == 13) || (event.keyCode == 13)) {document.getElementById('mama').click();}};"/> <input type="image" src="http://taobaofieldguide.com/images/orange-translate-button.png" id="searchsubmit" value="Translate" class="btn" /> </div> <FORM name="something" method="post" onsubmit="goToPage(this.url.value);"> <input type="text" id="url";> <INPUT type="submit" id="mama" value="GO" > </FORM> </div> </body>

  • JQuery works on JsFiddle but not in project

    - by DanielNova
    Here is the JsFiddle I created: http://jsfiddle.net/ShHVy/ Everything works fine - different data is displayed in the column row to the right as I wish.. However, even having this exact code in my Project won't make it work The page in question is a popup view and it looks like this: <style type="text/css"> .highlighted { background-color: Orange; color: White; } </style> <script> var chosen = []; $("td").click(function () { var idx = $(this).index() + 1; $("td:nth-child(" + idx + ")").removeClass("highlighted"); $(this).addClass("highlighted"); chosen[idx] = $(this).parent("tr").index(); }); var data = { "Differdange": ["Differdange 1", "Differdange 2", "Differdange 3", "Differdange 4"], "Dippach": ["Dippach 1", "Dippach 2", "Dippach 3", "Dippach 4", ] }; function pushData(id, col) { $("#datachange table td:nth-child(" + 2 + ")").each(function (i, v) { $(this).html(data[id][i]) }); } $(function () { $("#datachange td").click(function () { var idx = $(this).index() + 1; $("td:nth-child(" + idx + ")").removeClass("highlighted"); $(this).addClass("highlighted"); pushData($(".highlighted").html(), 2); }); }); </script> <html> <head><title>Table Data Change</title></head> <body id="datachange" class="demo"> <table> <thead> <tr> <th>ID</th> <th>DATA</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>Differdange</td> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Dippach</td> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Dippach</td> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Differdange</td> <td></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </body> </html> Can anyone tell me why this small piece of JQuery doesn't work on mine (it's nothing to do with libraries as the top "td" function works 100% fine)

  • How to avoid the Portlet Skin mismatch

    - by Martin Deh
    here are probably many on going debates whether to use portlets or taskflows in a WebCenter custom portal application.  Usually the main battle on which side to take in these debates are centered around which technology enables better performance.  The good news is that both of my colleagues, Maiko Rocha and George Maggessy have posted their respective views on this topic so I will not have to further the discussion.  However, if you do plan to use portlets in a WebCenter custom portal application, this post will help you not have the "portlet skin mismatch" issue.   An example of the presence of the mismatch can be view from the applications log: The skin customsharedskin.desktop specified on the requestMap will be used even though the consumer's skin's styleSheetDocumentId on the requestMap does not match the local skin's styleSheetDocument's id. This will impact performance since the consumer and producer stylesheets cannot be shared. The producer styleclasses will not be compressed to avoid conflicts. A reason the ids do not match may be the jars are not identical on the producer and the consumer. For example, one might have trinidad-skins.xml's skin-additions in a jar file on the class path that the other does not have. Notice that due to the mismatch the portlet's CSS will not be able to be compressed, which will most like impact performance in the portlet's consuming portal. The first part of the blog will define the portlet mismatch and cover some debugging tips that can help you solve the portlet mismatch issue.  Following that I will give a complete example of the creating, using and sharing a shared skin in both a portlet producer and the consumer application. Portlet Mismatch Defined  In general, when you consume/render an ADF page (or task flow) using the ADF Portlet bridge, the portlet (producer) would try to use the skin of the consumer page - this is called skin-sharing. When the producer cannot match the consumer skin, the portlet would generate its own stylesheet and reference it from its markup - this is called mismatched-skin. This can happen because: The consumer and producer use different versions of ADF Faces, or The consumer has additional skin-additions that the producer doesn't have or vice-versa, or The producer does not have the consumer skin For case (1) & (2) above, the producer still uses the consumer skin ID to render its markup. For case (3), the producer would default to using portlet skin. If there is a skin mis-match then there may be a performance hit because: The browser needs to fetch this extra stylesheet (though it should be cached unless expires caching is turned off) The generated portlet markup uses uncompressed styles resulting in a larger markup It is often not obvious when a skin mismatch occurs, unless you look for either of these indicators: The log messages in the producer log, for example: The skin blafplus-rich.desktop specified on the requestMap will not be used because the styleSheetDocument id on the requestMap does not match the local skin's styleSheetDocument's id. It could mean the jars are not identical. For example, one might have trinidad-skins.xml's skin-additions in a jar file on the class path that the other does not have. View the portlet markup inside the iframe, there should be a <link> tag to the portlet stylesheet resource like this (note the CSS is proxied through consumer's resourceproxy): <link rel=\"stylesheet\" charset=\"UTF-8\" type=\"text/css\" href=\"http:.../resourceproxy/portletId...252525252Fadf%252525252Fstyles%252525252Fcache%252525252Fblafplus-rich-portlet-d1062g-en-ltr-gecko.css... Using HTTP monitoring tool (eg, firebug, httpwatch), you can see a request is made to the portlet stylesheet resource (see URL above) There are a number of reasons for mismatched-skin. For skin to match the producer and consumer must match the following configurations: The ADF Faces version (different versions may have different style selectors) Style Compression, this is defined in the web.xml (default value is false, i.e. compression is ON) Tonal styles or themes, also defined in the web.xml via context-params The same skin additions (jars with skin) are available for both producer and consumer.  Skin additions are defined in the trinidad-skins.xml, using the <skin-addition> tags. These are then aggregated from all the jar files in the classpath. If there's any jar that exists on the producer but not the consumer, or vice veras, you get a mismatch. Debugging Tips  Ensure the style compression and tonal styles/themes match on the consumer and producer, by looking at the web.xml documents for the consumer & producer applications It is bit more involved to determine if the jars match.  However, you can enable the Trinidad logging to show which skin-addition it is processing.  To enable this feature, update the logging.xml log level of both the producer and consumer WLS to FINEST.  For example, in the case of the WebLogic server used by JDeveloper: $JDEV_USER_DIR/system<version number>/DefaultDomain/config/fmwconfig/servers/DefaultServer/logging.xml Add a new entry: <logger name="org.apache.myfaces.trinidadinternal.skin.SkinUtils" level="FINEST"/> Restart WebLogic.  Run the consumer page, you should see the following logging in both the consumer and producer log files. Any entries that don't match is the cause of the mismatch.  The following is an example of what the log will produce with this setting: [SRC_CLASS: org.apache.myfaces.trinidadinternal.skin.SkinUtils] [APP: WebCenter] [SRC_METHOD: _getMetaInfSkinsNodeList] Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/announcement-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/calendar-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/custComps-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/forum-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/page-service-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/peopleconnections-kudos-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/peopleconnections-wall-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/portlet-client-adf-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/rtc-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/serviceframework-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/smarttag-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.skin/in1ar8/APP-INF/lib/spaces-service-skins.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/oracle.webcenter.composer/3yo7j/WEB-INF/lib/custComps-skin.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/adf.oracle.domain.webapp/q433f9/WEB-INF/lib/adf-richclient-impl-11.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/adf.oracle.domain.webapp/q433f9/WEB-INF/lib/dvt-faces.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml Processing skin URL:zip:/tmp/_WL_user/adf.oracle.domain.webapp/q433f9/WEB-INF/lib/dvt-trinidad.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml   The Complete Example The first step is to create the shared library.  The WebCenter documentation covering this is located here in section 15.7.  In addition, our ADF guru Frank Nimphius also covers this in hes blog.  Here are my steps (in JDeveloper) to create the skin that will be used as the shared library for both the portlet producer and consumer. Create a new Generic Application Give application name (i.e. MySharedSkin) Give a project name (i.e. MySkinProject) Leave Project Technologies blank (none selected), and click Finish Create the trinidad-skins.xml Right-click on the MySkinProject node in the Application Navigator and select "New" In the New Galley, click on "General", select "File" from the Items, and click OK In the Create File dialog, name the file trinidad-skins.xml, and (IMPORTANT) give the directory path to MySkinProject\src\META-INF In the trinidad-skins.xml, complete the skin entry.  for example: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252" ?> <skins xmlns="http://myfaces.apache.org/trinidad/skin">   <skin>     <id>mysharedskin.desktop</id>     <family>mysharedskin</family>     <extends>fusionFx-v1.desktop</extends>     <style-sheet-name>css/mysharedskin.css</style-sheet-name>   </skin> </skins> Create CSS file In the Application Navigator, right click on the META-INF folder (where the trinidad-skins.xml is located), and select "New" In the New Gallery, select Web-Tier-> HTML, CSS File from the the Items and click OK In the Create Cascading Style Sheet dialog, give the name (i.e. mysharedskin.css) Ensure that the Directory path is the under the META-INF (i.e. MySkinProject\src\META-INF\css) Once the new CSS opens in the editor, add in a style selector.  For example, this selector will style the background of a particular panelGroupLayout: af|panelGroupLayout.customPGL{     background-color:Fuchsia; } Create the MANIFEST.MF (used for deployment JAR) In the Application Navigator, right click on the META-INF folder (where the trinidad-skins.xml is located), and select "New" In the New Galley, click on "General", select "File" from the Items, and click OK In the Create File dialog, name the file MANIFEST.MF, and (IMPORTANT) ensure that the directory path is to MySkinProject\src\META-INF Complete the MANIFEST.MF, where the extension name is the shared library name Manifest-Version: 1.1 Created-By: Martin Deh Implementation-Title: mysharedskin Extension-Name: mysharedskin.lib.def Specification-Version: 1.0.1 Implementation-Version: 1.0.1 Implementation-Vendor: MartinDeh Create new Deployment Profile Right click on the MySkinProject node, and select New From the New Gallery, select General->Deployment Profiles, Shared Library JAR File from Items, and click OK In the Create Deployment Profile dialog, give name (i.e.mysharedskinlib) and click OK In the Edit JAR Deployment dialog, un-check Include Manifest File option  Select Project Output->Contributors, and check Project Source Path Select Project Output->Filters, ensure that all items under the META-INF folder are selected Click OK to exit the Project Properties dialog Deploy the shared lib to WebLogic (start server before steps) Right click on MySkin Project and select Deploy For this example, I will deploy to JDeverloper WLS In the Deploy dialog, select Deploy to Weblogic Application Server and click Next Choose IntegratedWebLogicServer and click Next Select Deploy to selected instances in the domain radio, select Default Server (note: server must be already started), and ensure Deploy as a shared Library radio is selected Click Finish Open the WebLogic console to see the deployed shared library The following are the steps to create a simple test Portlet Create a new WebCenter Portal - Portlet Producer Application In the Create Portlet Producer dialog, select default settings and click Finish Right click on the Portlets node and select New IIn the New Gallery, select Web-Tier->Portlets, Standards-based Java Portlet (JSR 286) and click OK In the General Portlet information dialog, give portlet name (i.e. MyPortlet) and click Next 2 times, stopping at Step 3 In the Content Types, select the "view" node, in the Implementation Method, select the Generate ADF-Faces JSPX radio and click Finish Once the portlet code is generated, open the view.jspx in the source editor Based on the simple CSS entry, which sets the background color of a panelGroupLayout, replace the <af:form/> tag with the example code <af:form>         <af:panelGroupLayout id="pgl1" styleClass="customPGL">           <af:outputText value="background from shared lib skin" id="ot1"/>         </af:panelGroupLayout>  </af:form> Since this portlet is to use the shared library skin, in the generated trinidad-config.xml, remove both the skin-family tag and the skin-version tag In the Application Resources view, under Descriptors->META-INF, double-click to open the weblogic-application.xml Add a library reference to the shared skin library (note: the library-name must match the extension-name declared in the MANIFEST.MF):  <library-ref>     <library-name>mysharedskin.lib.def</library-name>  </library-ref> Notice that a reference to oracle.webcenter.skin exists.  This is important if this portlet is going to be consumed by a WebCenter Portal application.  If this tag is not present, the portlet skin mismatch will happen.  Configure the portlet for deployment Create Portlet deployment WAR Right click on the Portlets node and select New In the New Gallery, select Deployment Profiles, WAR file from Items and click OK In the Create Deployment Profile dialog, give name (i.e. myportletwar), click OK Keep all of the defaults, however, remember the Context Root entry (i.e. MyPortlet4SharedLib-Portlets-context-root, this will be needed to obtain the producer WSDL URL) Click OK, then OK again to exit from the Properties dialog Since the weblogic-application.xml has to be included in the deployment, the portlet must be deployed as a WAR, within an EAR In the Application dropdown, select Deploy->New Deployment Profile... By default EAR File has been selected, click OK Give Deployment Profile (EAR) a name (i.e. MyPortletProducer) and click OK In the Properties dialog, select Application Assembly and ensure that the myportletwar is checked Keep all of the other defaults and click OK For this demo, un-check the Auto Generate ..., and all of the Security Deployment Options, click OK Save All In the Application dropdown, select Deploy->MyPortletProducer In the Deployment Action, select Deploy to Application Server, click Next Choose IntegratedWebLogicServer and click Next Select Deploy to selected instances in the domain radio, select Default Server (note: server must be already started), and ensure Deploy as a standalone Application radio is selected The select deployment type (identifying the deployment as a JSR 286 portlet) dialog appears.  Keep default radio "Yes" selection and click OK Open the WebLogic console to see the deployed Portlet The last step is to create the test portlet consuming application.  This will be done using the OOTB WebCenter Portal - Framework Application.  Create the Portlet Producer Connection In the JDeveloper Deployment log, copy the URL of the portlet deployment (i.e. http://localhost:7101/MyPortlet4SharedLib-Portlets-context-root Open a browser and paste in the URL.  The Portlet information page should appear.  Click on the WSRP v2 WSDL link Copy the URL from the browser (i.e. http://localhost:7101/MyPortlet4SharedLib-Portlets-context-root/portlets/wsrp2?WSDL) In the Application Resources view, right click on the Connections folder and select New Connection->WSRP Connection Give the producer a name or accept the default, click Next Enter (paste in) the WSDL URL, click Next If connection to Portlet is succesful, Step 3 (Specify Additional ...) should appear.  Accept defaults and click Finish Add the portlet to a test page Open the home.jspx.  Note in the visual editor, the orange dashed border, which identifies the panelCustomizable tag. From the Application Resources. select the MyPortlet portlet node, and drag and drop the node into the panelCustomizable section.  A Confirm Portlet Type dialog appears, keep default ADF Rich Portlet and click OK Configure the portlet to use the shared skin library Open the weblogic-application.xml and add the library-ref entry (mysharedskin.lib.def) for the shared skin library.  See create portlet example above for the steps Since by default, the custom portal using a managed bean to (dynamically) determine the skin family, the default trinidad-config.xml will need to be altered Open the trinidad-config.xml in the editor and replace the EL (preferenceBean) for the skin-family tag, with mysharedskin (this is the skin-family named defined in the trinidad-skins.xml) Remove the skin-version tag Right click on the index.html to test the application   Notice that the JDeveloper log view does not have any reporting of a skin mismatch.  In addition, since I have configured the extra logging outlined in debugging section above, I can see the processed skin jar in both the producer and consumer logs: <SkinUtils> <_getMetaInfSkinsNodeList> Processing skin URL:zip:/JDeveloper/system11.1.1.6.38.61.92/DefaultDomain/servers/DefaultServer/upload/mysharedskin.lib.def/[email protected]/app/mysharedskinlib.jar!/META-INF/trinidad-skins.xml

  • Is your team is a high-performing team?

    As a child I can remember looking out of the car window as my father drove along the Interstate in Florida while seeing prisoners wearing bright orange jump suits and prison guards keeping a watchful eye on them. The prisoners were taking part in a prison road gang. These road gangs were formed to help the state maintain the state highway infrastructure. The prisoner’s primary responsibilities are to pick up trash and debris from the roadway. This is a prime example of a work group or working group used by most prison systems in the United States. Work groups or working groups can be defined as a collection of individuals or entities working together to achieve a specific goal or accomplish a specific set of tasks. Typically these groups are only established for a short period of time and are dissolved once the desired outcome has been achieved. More often than not group members usually feel as though they are expendable to the group and some even dread that they are even in the group. "A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they are mutually accountable." (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993) So how do you determine that a team is a high-performing team?  This can be determined by three base line criteria that include: consistently high quality output, the promotion of personal growth and well being of all team members, and most importantly the ability to learn and grow as a unit. Initially, a team can successfully create high-performing output without meeting all three criteria, however this will erode over time because team members will feel detached from the group or that they are not growing then the quality of the output will decline. High performing teams are similar to work groups because they both utilize a collection of individuals or entities to accomplish tasks. What distinguish a high-performing team from a work group are its characteristics. High-performing teams contain five core characteristics. These characteristics are what separate a group from a team. The five characteristics of a high-performing team include: Purpose, Performance Measures, People with Tasks and Relationship Skills, Process, and Preparation and Practice. A high-performing team is much more than a work group, and typically has a life cycle that can vary from team to team. The standard team lifecycle consists of five states and is comparable to a human life cycle. The five states of a high-performing team lifecycle include: Formulating, Storming, Normalizing, Performing, and Adjourning. The Formulating State of a team is first realized when the team members are first defined and roles are assigned to all members. This initial stage is very important because it can set the tone for the team and can ultimately determine its success or failure. In addition, this stage requires the team to have a strong leader because team members are normally unclear about specific roles, specific obstacles and goals that my lay ahead of them.  Finally, this stage is where most team members initially meet one another prior to working as a team unless the team members already know each other. The Storming State normally arrives directly after the formulation of a new team because there are still a lot of unknowns amongst the newly formed assembly. As a general rule most of the parties involved in the team are still getting used to the workload, pace of work, deadlines and the validity of various tasks that need to be performed by the group.  In this state everything is questioned because there are so many unknowns. Items commonly questioned include the credentials of others on the team, the actual validity of a project, and the leadership abilities of the team leader.  This can be exemplified by looking at the interactions between animals when they first meet.  If we look at a scenario where two people are walking directly toward each other with their dogs. The dogs will automatically enter the Storming State because they do not know the other dog. Typically in this situation, they attempt to define which is more dominating via play or fighting depending on how the dogs interact with each other. Once dominance has been defined and accepted by both dogs then they will either want to play or leave depending on how the dogs interacted and other environmental variables. Once the Storming State has been realized then the Normalizing State takes over. This state is entered by a team once all the questions of the Storming State have been answered and the team has been tested by a few tasks or projects.  Typically, participants in the team are filled with energy, and comradery, and a strong alliance with team goals and objectives.  A high school football team is a perfect example of the Normalizing State when they start their season.  The player positions have been assigned, the depth chart has been filled and everyone is focused on winning each game. All of the players encourage and expect each other to perform at the best of their abilities and are united by competition from other teams. The Performing State is achieved by a team when its history, working habits, and culture solidify the team as one working unit. In this state team members can anticipate specific behaviors, attitudes, reactions, and challenges are seen as opportunities and not problems. Additionally, each team member knows their role in the team’s success, and the roles of others. This is the most productive state of a group and is where all the time invested working together really pays off. If you look at an Olympic figure skating team skate you can easily see how the time spent working together benefits their performance. They skate as one unit even though it is comprised of two skaters. Each skater has their routine completely memorized as well as their partners. This allows them to anticipate each other’s moves on the ice makes their skating look effortless. The final state of a team is the Adjourning State. This state is where accomplishments by the team and each individual team member are recognized. Additionally, this state also allows for reflection of the interactions between team members, work accomplished and challenges that were faced. Finally, the team celebrates the challenges they have faced and overcome as a unit. Currently in the workplace teams are divided into two different types: Co-located and Distributed Teams. Co-located teams defined as the traditional group of people working together in an office, according to Andy Singleton of Assembla. This traditional type of a team has dominated business in the past due to inadequate technology, which forced workers to primarily interact with one another via face to face meetings.  Team meetings are primarily lead by the person with the highest status in the company. Having personally, participated in meetings of this type, usually a select few of the team members dominate the flow of communication which reduces the input of others in group discussions. Since discussions are dominated by a select few individuals the discussions and group discussion are skewed in favor of the individuals who communicate the most in meetings. In addition, Team members might not give their full opinions on a topic of discussion in part not to offend or create controversy amongst the team and can alter decision made in meetings towards those of the opinions of the dominating team members. Distributed teams are by definition spread across an area or subdivided into separate sections. That is exactly what distributed teams when compared to a more traditional team. It is common place for distributed teams to have team members across town, in the next state, across the country and even with the advances in technology over the last 20 year across the world. These teams allow for more diversity compared to the other type of teams because they allow for more flexibility regarding location. A team could consist of a 30 year old male Italian project manager from New York, a 50 year old female Hispanic from California and a collection of programmers from India because technology allows them to communicate as if they were standing next to one another.  In addition, distributed team members consult with more team members prior to making decisions compared to traditional teams, and take longer to come to decisions due to the changes in time zones and cultural events. However, team members feel more empowered to speak out when they do not agree with the team and to notify others of potential issues regarding the work that the team is doing. Virtual teams which are a subset of the distributed team type is changing organizational strategies due to the fact that a team can now in essence be working 24 hrs a day because of utilizing employees in various time zones and locations.  A primary example of this is with customer services departments, a company can have multiple call centers spread across multiple time zones allowing them to appear to be open 24 hours a day while all a employees work from 9AM to 5 PM every day. Virtual teams also allow human resources departments to go after the best talent for the company regardless of where the potential employee works because they will be a part of a virtual team all that is need is the proper technology to be setup to allow everyone to communicate. In addition to allowing employees to work from home, the company can save space and resources by not having to provide a desk for every team member. In fact, those team members that randomly come into the office can actually share one desk amongst multiple people. This is definitely a cost cutting plus given the current state of the economy. One thing that can turn a team into a high-performing team is leadership. High-performing team leaders need to focus on investing in ongoing personal development, provide team members with direction, structure, and resources needed to accomplish their work, make the right interventions at the right time, and help the team manage boundaries between the team and various external parties involved in the teams work. A team leader needs to invest in ongoing personal development in order to effectively manage their team. People have said that attitude is everything; this is very true about leaders and leadership. A team takes on the attitudes and behaviors of its leaders. This can potentially harm the team and the team’s output. Leaders must concentrate on self-awareness, and understanding their team’s group dynamics to fully understand how to lead them. In addition, always learning new leadership techniques from other effective leaders is also very beneficial. Providing team members with direction, structure, and resources that they need to accomplish their work collectively sounds easy, but it is not.  Leaders need to be able to effectively communicate with their team on how their work helps the company reach for its organizational vision. Conversely, the leader needs to allow his team to work autonomously within specific guidelines to turn the company’s vision into a reality.  This being said the team must be appropriately staffed according to the size of the team’s tasks and their complexity. These tasks should be clear, and be meaningful to the company’s objectives and allow for feedback to be exchanged with the leader and the team member and the leader and upper management. Now if the team is properly staffed, and has a clear and full understanding of what is to be done; the company also must supply the workers with the proper tools to achieve the tasks that they are asked to do. No one should be asked to dig a hole without being given a shovel.  Finally, leaders must reward their team members for accomplishments that they achieve. Awards could range from just a simple congratulatory email, a party to close the completion of a large project, or other monetary rewards. Managing boundaries is very important for team leaders because it can alter attitudes of team members and can add undue stress to the team which will force them to loose focus on the tasks at hand for the group. Team leaders should promote communication between team members so that burdens are shared amongst the team and solutions can be derived from hearing the opinions of multiple sources. This also reinforces team camaraderie and working as a unit. Team leaders must manage the type and timing of interventions as to not create an even bigger mess within the team. Poorly timed interventions can really deflate team members and make them question themselves. This could really increase further and undue interventions by the team leader. Typically, the best time for interventions is when the team is just starting to form so that all unproductive behaviors are removed from the team and that it can retain focus on its agenda. If an intervention is effectively executed the team will feel energized about the work that they are doing, promote communication and interaction amongst the group and improve moral overall. High-performing teams are very import to organizations because they consistently produce high quality output and develop a collective purpose for their work. This drive to succeed allows team members to utilize specific talents allowing for growth in these areas.  In addition, these team members usually take on a sense of ownership with their projects and feel that the other team members are irreplaceable. • MSCC: Global Windows Azure Bootcamp

    Mauritius participated and contributed to the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp 2014 (GWAB). Again! And this time stronger than ever, and together with 137 other locations in 56 countries world-wide. We had 62 named registrations, 7 guest additions and approximately 10 offline participants prior to the event day. Most interestingly the organisation of the GWAB through the MSCC helped to increased the number of craftsmen. The Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community has currently 138 registered members - in less than one year! Only with those numbers we can proudly say that all the preparations and hard work towards this event already paid off. Personally, I'm really grateful that we had this kind of response and the feedback from some attendees confirmed that the MSCC is on the right track here on Cyber Island Mauritius. Inspired and motivated by the success of this event, rest assured that there will be more public events like the GWAB. This time it took some time to reflect on our meetup, following my first impression right on spot: "Wow, what an experience to organise and participate in this global event. Overall, I've been very pleased with the preparations and the event itself. Surely, there have been some nicks that we have to address and to improve for future activities like this. Quite frankly, we are not professional event organisers (not yet) but we learned a lot over the past couple of days. A big Thank You to our event sponsors, namely Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific, Ceridian Mauritius and Emtel. Without them this event wouldn't have happened - Thank You! And to the cool team members of Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs). You geeks did a great job! Thanks!" So, how many attendees did we actually have? 61! - Awesome - 61 cloud computing instances to help on the research of diabetes. During Saturday afternoon there was even an online publication on L'Express: Les développeurs mauriciens se joignent au combat contre le diabète Reactions of other attendees Don't take my word for granted... Here are some impressions and feedback from our participants: "Awesome event, really appreciated the presentations :-)" -- Kevin on event comments "very interesting and enriching." -- Diana on event comments "#gwab #gwabmru 2014 great success. Looking forward for gwab 2015" -- Wasiim on Twitter "Was there till the end. Awesome Event. I'll surely join upcoming meetup sessions :)" -- Luchmun on event comments "#gwabmru was not that cool. left early" -- Mohammad on Twitter The overall feedback is positive but we are absolutely aware that there quite a number of problems we had to face. We are already looking into that and ideas / action plans on how we will be able to improve it for future events. The sessions We started the day with welcoming speeches by Thierry Coret, Sr. Marketing Manager of Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands & French Pacific and Vidia Mooneegan, Managing Director and Sr. Vice President of Ceridian Mauritius. The clear emphasis was on the endless possibilities of cloud computing and how it can enable any kind of sectors here in the country. Then it was about time to set up the cloud computing services in order to contribute each attendees cloud computing resources to the global research of diabetes, a step by step guide presented by Arnaud Meslier, Technical Evangelist at Microsoft. Given a rendering package and a configuration file it was very interesting to follow the single steps in Windows Azure. Also, during the day we were not sure whether the set up had been correctly, as Mauritius didn't show up on the results board - which should have been the case after approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Anyways, let the minions work... Next, Arnaud gave a brief overview of the variety of services Windows Azure has to offer. Whether you need a development environment for your websites or mobiles app, running a virtual machine with your existing applications or simply putting a SQL database online. No worries, Windows Azure has the right packages available and the online management portal is really easy t handle. After this, we got a little bit more business oriented while Wasiim Hosenbocus, employee at Ceridian, took the attendees through the inerts of a real-life application, and demoed a couple of the existing features. He did a great job by showing how the different services of Windows Azure can be created and pulled together. After the lunch break it is always tough to keep the audience awake... And it was my turn. I gave a brief overview on operating and managing a SQL database on Windows Azure. Well, there are actually two options available and depending on your individual requirements you should be aware of both. The simpler version is called SQL Database and while provisioning only takes a couple of seconds, you should take into consideration that SQL Database has a number of constraints, like limitations on the actual database size - up to 5 GB as web edition and up to 150 GB maximum as business edition -, among others. Next, it was Chervine Bhiwoo's session on Windows Azure Mobile Services. It was absolutely amazing to see that the mobiles services directly offers you various project templates, like Windows 8 Store App, Android app, iOS app, and even Xamarin cross-platform app development. So, within a couple of minutes you can have your first mobile app active and running on Windows Azure. Furthermore, Chervine showed the attendees that adding another user interface, like Web Sites running on ASP.NET MVC 4 only takes a couple of minutes, too. And last but not least, we rounded up the day with Windows Azure Websites and hosting of Virtual Machines presented by some members of the local Microsoft Students Partners programme. Surely, one of the big advantages using Windows Azure is the availability of pre-defined installation packages of known web applications, like WordPress, Joomla!, or Ghost. Compared to running your own web site with a traditional web hoster it is surely en par, and depending on your personal level of expertise, Windows Azure provides you more liberty in terms of configuration than maybe a shared hosting environment. Running a pre-defined web application is one thing but in case that you would like to have more control over your hosting environment it is highly advised to opt for a virtual machine. Provisioning of an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS system was very simple to do but it takes some more minutes than you might expect. So, please be patient and take your time while Windows Azure gets everything in place for you. Afterwards, you can use a SecureShell (ssh) client like Putty in case of a Linux-based machine, or Remote Desktop Services when operating a Windows Server system to log in into your virtual machine. At the end of the day we had a great Q&A session and we finalised the event with our raffle of goodies. Participation in the raffle was bound to submission of the session survey and most gratefully we had a give-away for everyone. What a nice coincidence to finish of the day. Note: All session slides (and demo codes) will be made available on the MSCC event page. Please, check the Files section over there. (Some) Visual impressions from the event Just to give you an idea about what has happened during the GWAB 2014 at Ebene... Speakers and Microsoft Student Partners are getting ready for the Global Windows Azure Bootcamp 2014 GWAB 2014 attendees are fully integrated into the hands-on-labs and setting up their individuals cloud computing services 60 attendees at the GWAB 2014. Despite some technical difficulties we had a great time running the event GWAB 2014: Using the lunch break for networking and exchange of ideas - Great conversations and topics amongst attendees There are more pictures on the original event page: Questions & Answers Following are a couple of questions which have been asked and didn't get an answer during the event: Q: Is it possible to upload static pages via FTP? A: Yes, you can. Have a look at the right side column on the dashboard of your website. There you'll find information about the FTP and SFTP host names. You can use any FTP client, like ie. FileZilla to log in. FTP also gives you access to your log files. Q: What are the size limitations on SQL Database? A: 5 GB on the Web Edition, and 150 GB on the business edition. A maximum 150 databases (inclusing 'master') per SQL Database server. More details here: General Guidelines and Limitations (Azure SQL Database) Q: What's the maximum size of a SQL Server running in a Virtual Machine? A: The maximum Windows Azure VM has currently 8 CPU cores, 14 or 56 GB of RAM and 16x 1 TB hard drives. More details here: Virtual Machine and Cloud Service Sizes for Azure Q: How can we register for Windows Azure? A: Mauritius is currently not listed for phone verification. Please get in touch with Arnaud Meslier at Microsoft IOI & FP Q: Can I use my own domain name for Windows Azure websites? A: Yes, you can. But this might require to upscale your account to Standard. In case that I missed a question and answer, please use the comment section at the end of the article. Thanks! Final results Every participant was instructed during the hands-on-lab session on how to set up a cloud computing service in their account. Of course, I won't keep the results from you... Global Azure Lab GWAB 2014: Our cloud computing contribution to the research of diabetes And I would say Mauritius did a good job! Upcoming Events What are the upcoming events here in Mauritius? So far, we have the following ones (incomplete list as usual) in chronological order: Launch of Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (15.4.2014) Corsair Hackers Reboot (19.4.2014) WebCup (TBA ~ June 2014) Developers Conference (TBA ~ July 2014) Linuxfest 2014 (TBA ~ November 2014) Hopefully, there will be more announcements during the next couple of weeks and months. If you know about any other event, like a bootcamp, a code challenge or hackathon here in Mauritius, please drop me a note in the comment section below this article. Thanks! Networking and job/project opportunities Despite having technical presentations on Windows Azure an event like this always offers a great bunch of possibilities and opportunities to get in touch with new people in IT, have an exchange of experience with other like-minded people. As I already wrote about Communities - The importance of exchange and discussion - I had a great conversation with representatives of the University des Mascareignes which are currently embracing cloud infrastructure and cloud computing for their various campuses in the Indian Ocean. As for the MSCC it would be a great experience to stay in touch with them, and to work on upcoming, common activities. Furthermore, I had a very good conversation with Thierry and Ludovic of Microsoft IOI & FP on the necessity of user groups and IT communities here on the island. It's great to see that the MSCC is currently on a run and that local companies are sharing our thoughts on promoting IT careers and exchange of IT knowledge in such an open way. I'm also looking forward to be able to participate and to contribute on more events in the near future. My resume of the day We learned a lot today and there is always room for improvement! It was an awesome event and quite frankly it was a pleasure to spend the day with so many enthuastic IT people in the same room. It was a great experience to organise such event locally and participate on a global scale to support the GlyQ-IQ Technology in their research on diabetes. I was so pleased to see the involvement of new MSCC members in taking the opportunity to share and learn about the power of cloud computing. The Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community is on the right way and this year's bootcamp on Windows Azure only marked the beginning of our journey. Thank you to our sponsors and my kudos to the MSPs! Update: Media coverage The event has been reported in local media, too. • Content display problems when using Suckerfish menus with 960.gs and IE

    - by Cedar Jensen
    I'm using 960.gs layout and when I add the suckerfish menu as part of the content to one of the grids, the contents of adjacent siblings bleed through the menu in all versions of IE. In the listed html below, the text from 'belowFoldSection' will appear through the menu when it is visible and has enough items to make it span over 2nd section. However, the contents of 'introSummary' will be underneath the menu, as expected. I've set the z-index for #nav and #nav ul in my css and this of course makes it work in FF, Chrome and Safari, but not in IE (because IE incorrectly assigns child elements its own z-index). If I change the .grid_nn class 'position' attribute (set by default in the 960 template) from 'relative' to absolute, this fixes it in IE. However, it is my understanding that I don't want the child elements of the 'container_12' to be taken out of the flow of the document and want them positioned relative to the .container_12's starting point. (Changing the attribute to absolute causes other general layout problems) Can anyone suggest a work-around? My html: <div class="container_12"> <!--First section where menu lives--> <div class="grid_12" id="mainSection"> <div class="grid_4 alpha" id="intro"> <p>Start of menu here</p> <div id="subMenu"> <ul id="nav"> <li><a href="#">Item 1</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Burrowing gobies</a></li> <li><a href="#">Dartfishes</a></li> <li><a href="#">Eellike gobies</a></li> <!--10 more for longer list --> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">Item 2</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Remoras</a></li> <li><a href="#">Tilefishes</a></li> <!--10 more for longer list --> </ul> </li> <li><a href="#">Item 3</a> <ul> <li><a href="#">Climbing perches</a></li> <li><a href="#">Labyrinthfishes</a></li> <li><a href="#">Kissing gouramis</a></li> <!--10 more for longer list --> </ul> </li> </ul> <div id="introSummary"> <h1>PERCIFORMES! • Tabular (X)HTML forms

    - by detly
    I have a set of items that can be in various states. I want to allow a user to use an (X)HTML form to change the state, and easily view the state of a group of objects ...so to this end, I'd like a layout like: | item1 | radio button for state 1 | radio for state 2 | ... | [update button] | | item2 | radio button for state 1 | radio for state 2 | ... | [update button] | etc. I prefer the radio buttons to list boxes so that it's easy for a user to visually scan for things in a certain state. It seemed like perfectly tabular data to me. The only problem is, you can't have forms inside a table that cross table cells (ie. <tr> <form> <td> ... is invalid). I thought, "hey, I could have one giant form wrapping a table, and make the [update button] value contain the IDs for each row!" Turns out certain versions of IE send ALL THE SUBMIT BUTTON VALUES on any single form. So I thought perhaps to to lay it out with <div>s and place the forms inside a single <td>. But then they break a line on each <div>. So I fixed their width and made them float: left. But then they wrap inside the table cells if the table row is wider than the page, and the radio controls don't line up with the headings. Is it possible to lay this out as I intend? The XHTML below shows the intended structure. Observe what happens if you resize the browser window below the width of the table (ideally, the name would break or the table would show a scroll bar). <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head><title>Test</title> <style type="text/css"> .state-select, .thing-state-name, .update { float: left; width: 8em; } .state-select { text-align: center; } </style> </head> <body> <table> <thead> <tr> <th class="thing-name-header">Thing</th> <th> <div class="thing-state-name">Present</div> <div class="thing-state-name">Absent</div> <div class="thing-state-name">Haven't looked</div> </th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td>Apple</td> <td> <form action="something" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="id" value="1" /> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="present" checked="checked" /></div> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="absent" /></div> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="unknown" /></div> <div class="update"><input type="submit" value="Update" /></div> </form> </td></tr> <tr> <td>Orange</td> <td> <form action="something" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="id" value="2" /> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="present" /></div> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="absent" checked="checked" /></div> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="unknown" /></div> <div class="update"><input type="submit" value="Update" /></div> </form> </td></tr> <tr> <td>David Bowie</td> <td> <form action="something" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="id" value="3" /> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="present" /></div> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="absent" /></div> <div class="state-select"><input type="radio" name="presence" value="unknown" checked="checked" /></div> <div class="update"><input type="submit" value="Update" /></div> </form> </td></tr> </tbody> </table> </body> </html>

  • How to occupy all the space in a div when working with min-height header / footer

    - by javacoder
    I believe this is a beginner's CSS question. I am utilizing the method described in http://www.xs4all.nl/~peterned/examples/csslayout1.html to fix a header to the top and a footer to the bottom. What I'd like to achieve now is two columns inside the content div. A left one of 200px and a right one that takes up the rest of the width. Unfortunately, I can't get the left and right divs to display correctly: they just don't grow vertically, and if I make the right div "width: 100%" it positions itself underneath the left one. What is the trick to make the left and right div take up all the space within the content div? The layout1.css is the original one. I just added two entries: #left and #right layout1.css: /** * 100% height layout with header and footer * ---------------------------------------------- * Feel free to copy/use/change/improve */ html,body { margin: 0; padding: 0; height: 100%; /* needed for container min-height */ background: gray; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; color: #666; } h1 { font: 1.5em georgia, serif; margin: 0.5em 0; } h2 { font: 1.25em georgia, serif; margin: 0 0 0.5em; } h1,h2,a { color: orange; } p { line-height: 1.5; margin: 0 0 1em; } div#container { position: relative; /* needed for footer positioning*/ margin: 0 auto; /* center, not in IE5 */ width: 750px; background: #f0f0f0; height: auto !important; /* real browsers */ height: 100%; /* IE6: treaded as min-height*/ min-height: 100%; /* real browsers */ } div#header { padding: 1em; background: #ddd url("../csslayout.gif") 98% 10px no-repeat; border-bottom: 6px double gray; } div#header p { font-style: italic; font-size: 1.1em; margin: 0; } div#content { padding: 1em 1em 5em; /* bottom padding for footer */ } div#content p { text-align: justify; padding: 0 1em; } div#footer { position: absolute; width: 100%; bottom: 0; /* stick to bottom */ background: #ddd; border-top: 6px double gray; } div#footer p { padding: 1em; margin: 0; } // added the following: div#left { border: 1px solid red; width: 200px; float: left; min-height: 100%; height: 100%; padding-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; } div#right { border: 1px solid blue; float: left; min-height: 100%; height: 100%; padding-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; } layout.html: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <title>CSS Layout - 100% height</title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="layout1.css" /> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="header"> <h1>header</h1> </div> <div id="content"> <div id="left"> left column </div> <div id="right"> right column </div> </div> <div id="footer"> <p> footer </p> </div> </div> </body>

  • improving conversions to binary and back in C#

    - by Saad Imran.
    I'm trying to write a general purpose socket server for a game I'm working on. I know I could very well use already built servers like SmartFox and Photon, but I wan't to go through the pain of creating one myself for learning purposes. I've come up with a BSON inspired protocol to convert the the basic data types, their arrays, and a special GSObject to binary and arrange them in a way so that it can be put back together into object form on the client end. At the core, the conversion methods utilize the .Net BitConverter class to convert the basic data types to binary. Anyways, the problem is performance, if I loop 50,000 times and convert my GSObject to binary each time it takes about 5500ms (the resulting byte[] is just 192 bytes per conversion). I think think this would be way too slow for an MMO that sends 5-10 position updates per second with a 1000 concurrent users. Yes, I know it's unlikely that a game will have a 1000 users on at the same time, but like I said earlier this is supposed to be a learning process for me, I want to go out of my way and build something that scales well and can handle at least a few thousand users. So yea, if anyone's aware of other conversion techniques or sees where I'm loosing performance I would appreciate the help. GSBitConverter.cs This is the main conversion class, it adds extension methods to main datatypes to convert to the binary format. It uses the BitConverter class to convert the base types. I've shown only the code to convert integer and integer arrays, but the rest of the method are pretty much replicas of those two, they just overload the type. public static class GSBitConverter { public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this short value) { return BitConverter.GetBytes(value); } public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<short> value) { List<byte> bytes = new List<byte>(); short length = (short)value.Count(); bytes.AddRange(length.ToGSBinary()); for (int i = 0; i < length; i++) bytes.AddRange(value.ElementAt(i).ToGSBinary()); return bytes.ToArray(); } public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this bool value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<bool> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<byte> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this int value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<int> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this long value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<long> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this float value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<float> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this double value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<double> value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this string value); public static byte[] ToGSBinary(this IEnumerable<string> value); public static string GetHexDump(this IEnumerable<byte> value); } Program.cs Here's the the object that I'm converting to binary in a loop. class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { GSObject obj = new GSObject(); obj.AttachShort("smallInt", 15); obj.AttachInt("medInt", 120700); obj.AttachLong("bigInt", 10900800700); obj.AttachDouble("doubleVal", Math.PI); obj.AttachStringArray("muppetNames", new string[] { "Kermit", "Fozzy", "Piggy", "Animal", "Gonzo" }); GSObject apple = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Apple"); apple.AttachString("color", "red"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", true); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)1.5); GSObject lemon = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Lemon"); apple.AttachString("color", "yellow"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", false); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)0.8); GSObject apricoat = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Apricoat"); apple.AttachString("color", "orange"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", true); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)1.9); GSObject kiwi = new GSObject(); apple.AttachString("name", "Kiwi"); apple.AttachString("color", "green"); apple.AttachBool("inStock", true); apple.AttachFloat("price", (float)2.3); GSArray fruits = new GSArray(); fruits.AddGSObject(apple); fruits.AddGSObject(lemon); fruits.AddGSObject(apricoat); fruits.AddGSObject(kiwi); obj.AttachGSArray("fruits", fruits); Stopwatch w1 = Stopwatch.StartNew(); for (int i = 0; i < 50000; i++) { byte[] b = obj.ToGSBinary(); } w1.Stop(); Console.WriteLine(BitConverter.IsLittleEndian ? "Little Endian" : "Big Endian"); Console.WriteLine(w1.ElapsedMilliseconds + "ms"); } Here's the code for some of my other classes that are used in the code above. Most of it is repetitive. GSObject GSArray GSWrappedObject

    I'm using PHP include to include a PHP file that has HTML in it. some of the content has french accents and these show up as ? on the site. How can this be solved? Thanks Here is the PHP file I include: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html dir="ltr" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta content="en-us" http-equiv="Content-Language" /> <title>Accueil</title> <meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type" /> <meta content="Changement créativité rêve buts être centré Plénitude personnel Développement transformation Modification nouveauté avancement bien-être Nouvelle vision ressentis L’énergie positive satisfaction l’acceptation Pardon" name="keywords" /> <link href="masterstyles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="menustyles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <link href="menudropdown.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <td class="tbsyles" >&nbsp; <h3 class="bigorange"> ACTIVITÉS À VENIR…</h3> <p class="horizblue"> </p> <p class="bigblack"> <br /> Inscrivez-vous à nos conférences et formations <br /> <br /> </p> <h4 class="orange"> Example of some text that could be here<br /> </h4> <p class="horizblue"> &nbsp;</p> <h3 class="bigorange"> <br /> ABONNEZ-VOUS… </h3> <p class="nopadding"> À notre liste d’envoi </p> <form method="post" action="<?php echo $PHP_SELF;?>"> <?PHP function process_info(){ if(isset($_POST['email'])) { $email=$_POST["email"]; $email=strtolower($email); $action = "subc"; // check if email exists // check whether email is correct (basic checking) $test1=strpos($email, "@"); //value must be >1 $test2=strpos(substr($email,strpos($email,"@")), "."); //value must be >1 $test3=strlen($email); //value must be >6 $test4=substr_count ($email,"@"); //value must be 1 if ($test1<2 or $test2<2 or $test3<7 or $test4!=1) { print "<h6>Il a une erreur avec vôtre email</h6>"; print "<h6>Aucune informations ont été envoyer</h6>"; } else { print "<h5>vôtre address est enregistrer, Merci </h5>"; //If they wanted to subsribe, do it... $file = "emaillist-666XXX.txt"; // lets try to get the content of the file if (file_exists($file)){ // If the file is already in the server, its content is pasted to variable $file_content $file_content=file_get_contents($file); } else{ // If the file does not exists, lets try to create it // In case file can not be created (probably due to problems with directory permissions), // the users is informed (the first user will be the webmaster, who must solve the problem). $cf = fopen($file, "w") or die(""); fclose($cf); } // IF REQUEST HAS BEEN TO SUBSCRIBE FROM MAILING LIST, ADD EMAIL TO THE FILE if ($action=="subc"){ // check whether the email is already registered if(strpos($file_content,"<$email>")>0){die("");} // write the email to the list (append it to the file) $cf = fopen($file, "a"); fputs($cf, "\n$email"); // new email is written to the file in a new line fclose($cf); } } } } process_info(); ?> &nbsp;<p class="nopadding">Votre Courriel</p> <input name="email" type="text" class="style3" /> <input name="Submit" type="submit" value="OK" /></form> <p class="horizblue"></p> <h3 class="bigorange"> <br /> OUTILS GRATUIT… </h3> <p class="nopadding">Amusez-vous avec des outils intéressants</p> </td>
