  • Does Google penalize pseudo-duplicate pages for different locations?

    My compony's site's home page was not specificly optimized to any location. Now, I am planning to optimize it to Boston, and create ten or so other landing pages for other locations we serve. If we made these new pages by copying the original Boston one and changing the location's name (s/Boston/Montreal/), would Google consider them as duplicate pages and penalize us? What is the best practice for this?

    I need to edit thousands of pages for a website with dynamic content added manually by the owner throughout 3 years, it has thousands of pages and I'm sure there is a better way to edit them without spending hours opening each one of them. I know it would be easy to just edit the styles.css but page dynamics like the positions of the google ad-boxes are individually edited inside the html of each page, so there is no way to solve this through css. Is there some sort of code, script and macro that can edit the pages at once?

    We have a situation with a website where we plan to add a huge amount of new pages. The domain is over 10 years old, approximately 10 thousand indexed pages, and the planned addition is approx. 30K new pages. Any idea how we should go about it? Must we schedule a gradual data release? Have you heard of any industry standards as to how many new pages per day / week / month should be added in order to appear natural and not get in trouble with Google? I.e. should we plan a bi-weekly addition of 5K?

    (I asked the following question at the DNN forum, and also at snowcovered. Nobody knew of such an obvious time-saver being for sale. I'm posting here in case anybody knows of a freeware module that might do this.) By "groups of dnn pages", I mean pages that form a hierarchy (not necessary a hierarchy that is headed with a page at the same level as the Home page.) I know that I can copy web pages, one by one, using the admin login via the web-based dnn interface. But, I'd prefer a script or wizard, of some sort (that runs scripts behind the scenes) that can allow me to 1) specify a web page that I want to copy (along with the hierarchy of pages under it) 2) specify the names and titles of the new top-level pages 3) specify whether the contained modules of the top-level page that I want to copy is to be : ( ) New ( ) Copy ( ) Reference (as in the web-based interface) 4) repeat 3) for each of the source pages in the hierarchy that I want to copy You might say that I am looking to do something similar to creating a portal web site based on a template, except that it's not an entirely new website - instead it's a section of the current web site. I might want to do this because I have an organization which is broken into chapters, and I want each chapter to have, say, it's own General Information page (which acts like it's home page), and underneath that, in it's hierarchy, a Contact Info page and an Events page. so: Home Page   General Information Page     Contact Info     Events -- Home Page   General Information Page     Contact Info     Events   General Information Page Kiwanis - Bloomfield     Contact Info     Events   General Information Page Kiwanis - Dayton     Contact Info     Events If I have 200 chapters, I certainly don't want to copy those 3 web pages using the web based interface, as that would take a long time.     I have a wordpress page with two or three sub-pages ("TV", "WEB", "WATCH") and I would like to have the sub-page links on the page itself. So, far, I can pull the sub-pages the following way: <?php $children = wp_list_pages('title_li&child_of='.$post->ID.'depth=1&echo=0'); if ($children) { ?> <ul> <?php echo $children; ?> </ul> <?php } ?> However, is there a way to loop through $children so I can pull each link by it's tag? i.e. using has_tag('tv'), has_tag('web') Between the wordpress conditional tags and php, I am not sure how to write this.

  • Best practices in ASP.Net code behind pages.

    Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

    Common problem, but I'm stumped. Session variables are passing across pages on my local (localhost) deployment, but not on my (www) host. I use a common includes file for each page with this code: $sessionDomain = "/"; @ini_set("session.cookie_path",$sessionDomain); $sessionName = "ccSID".md5('/store/'); session_name($sessionName); session_start(); I confirmed that the session ID cookie (ccSIDxxxxx...) remains the same across pages in my browser, but session variables don't seem to hold up when changing to a page in a different directory.

  • How to organized page specific CSS link tags with spark view pages and application.spark

    I'm currently using ASP.NET MVC 2 and the spark view engine. The main master page (application.spark) contains all of the CSS link tags that need to be present for all pages (global stuff). However, I have some content pages that have page specific CSS tags and currently I'm just sticking the link tag in the body as something like: <content name="MainContent"> <!-- page specific csss --> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/Content/css/page_specific.css" /> My problem is that when the page renders, this tag ends up in the which is not where it needs to be. Is there a solution for this? One idea I had was to check the controller in the Application.spark page and write out which page specific css file is required for that particular controller, however, that solution doesn't seem to scale well and I would imagine there is some way of creating the link in the child page and having it render where it's supposed to by the browser.

  • Visual Studio 2008 freezing when editing aspx/master pages

    Visual Studio freezes up continually when I'm editing master pages or aspx files. Here's what I've tried that have not helped: restarting VS only working with few files open at a time Disabled all addins (resharper etc.) deleted .suo and .user files changed default editor from Web Form Editor and Master Page Editor to HTML Editor installed SP1 I don't have tons of files - 3 Master pages and maybe 30 aspx files. It is a asp.net mvc project. All I have to do to get VS to freeze is type a little text or even just paste. The freezing lasts a good 5-10 seconds. My machine has 4GB of RAM and fast disks. Could it have anything to do with asp.net mvc? Would the amount and size of other projects in the solution affect the editor?

  • JVM throws OutOfMemory during gc though there are plenty memory left...

    I have my java application configured to use 5G memory. I got an OutOfMemory out of blue. I inspected the gc log and found plenty of memory left: young generation occupies 4% allocated space, tenure generation occupancy is 5% and perm generation is 43%. I am puzzled why JVM throws an OutOfMemory at the gc time. Does anyone know why this is happening? Your help is greatly appreciated.   • Spark View Engine: How to set default master page name?

    I use Spark View Engine with nested master pages. I have Application.spark which defines the basic layout of the website. Then there are several other masters which themselves use Application.spark as master page (Default.spark, SinlgeColumn.spark, Gallery.spark, ...) If no master page is specified in a view file, then automatically Application.spark is choosen by the Spark View Engine. Since almost all my pages use "Default.spark" as master, is there a way to configure this globally? The other possibilities would be: Set the master in each spark file individually <use master="Default" />. But that's really annoying. Rename my master files (Default.spark <- Application.spark) but that really doesn't make any sense in naming.

  • Drupal 5 Search not working on 404 pages.

    I have a <?php print $search_box; ?> in my page.tpl.php page. On pages that exist, the search works, but on 404 pages, it does not. I saw some bugs/patches threads over at drupal.org for D6.15, but none of them seem to work according to the thread and they weren't really relevant to D5.x I have a theory that the because the <?php print $search_box; ?> creates a form with an action to itself(a non-existant page), it'll get the 404. Has anyone run up against this? If so, how did you fix it? One theory I has was to somehow tap into the form and always make the action="/" (front page) which would always exist. If this is a good idea, how does one go about tapping into the FormAPI and overwriting the action? Is it a preprocess function?

  • Garbage collection of Strings returned from C# method calls in ascx pages

    Hi, For a web application developed on ASP.NET, we are finding that for user control files (ascx) we are returning long strings as a result of method calls. These are embedded in the ascx pages using the special tags <% %> When performing memory dump analysis for the application, we find that many of those strings are not being garbage collected. Also, the ascx pages are compiled to temporary DLLs and they are held in memory. Is this responsible for causing the long strings to remain in memory and not be garbage collected ? Note : The strings are larger than 85K in size.
