  I am a UI team leader. My team has a lot of projects using different languages/technologies. In some parts we will rewrite (gradually - @Ampt this is for you) the application in order to enable new fresh technologies in and get old dinosaurs out. I am going to use Node Package Manager to set up an "all powerful" build/dependency manager. Can I use NPM to depend on a private github repository? Can I use NPM to depend on SVN? Will NPM play nice with quickbuild? Since each project might have a slightly different structure (think jetty/maven or play!framework) can I configure NPM to install some dependencies in different folders while still running it from the project's root? How can I, using NPM, get development resources out and build a packaged product? (like a war) Yes/No - is there a reason to use grunt? No discussion, just one liners.

  Ive been using Drupal for years and now with work need to learn Expression Engine. Im interested in the comparison of Drupal and Expression Engine, but purely from a theming point of view (Ive no doubt Drupal is more powerful for development). Does anyone have any insights? It seems EE does give you more control over the exact html outputted, but is this necessary? I design my graphics first and Ive always been able to make exactly what I wanted in Drupal (some theme overrides could be easier, but ive got there in the end). Thanks

• Does it make sense to use jQuery in modern-webkit-only web applications?

  I'm lately working on a few mobile web apps for Android (2.3+) and iOS (4+). Their browsers support most of ECMAScript5, which is very powerful, and I wanted to use language features where possible, resorting to jQuery only when I had to. Turns out the only thing I use jQuery for is to have a shorter alternative for document.querySelectorAll. Might as well get rid of it. If I only have to support modern WebKit browsers, is it a good idea to get rid of jQuery (and other general-purpose libraries)? They are a layer of indirection, after all. (The apps don't have to make AJAX calls so far, I guess that's one thing that's going to get ugly. But is it worth keeping jQuery just for that?)

• Design pattern: static function call with input/output containers?

  I work for a company in software research department. We use algorithms from our real software and wrap them so that we can use them for prototyping. Every time an algorithm interface changes, we need to adapt our wrappers respectively. Recently all algorithms have been refactored in such a manner that instead of accepting many different inputs and returning outputs via referenced parameters, they now accept one input data container and one output data container (the latter is passed by reference). Algorithm interface is limited to a static function call like that: class MyAlgorithm{ static bool calculate(MyAlgorithmInput input, MyAlgorithmOutput &output); } This is actually a very powerful design, though I have never seen it in a C++ programming environment before. Changes in the number of parameters and their data types are now encapsulated and they don't change the algorithm callback. In the latest algorithm which I have developed I used the same scheme. Now I want to know if this is a popular design pattern and what it is called.

  I have several domains. I do not want those domains to be linked together. For example, say I have domaina.com. I do not want other users to be able to see that domaina.com is hosted with domainb.com A way to do it is to use many shared hosting service. Sometimes shared hosting is not powerful enough. Another way is to use multiple VPS, which is acceptable. My VPS provider says that I can accomplish this with cloudfare. However, I am confused on how cloudfare can hide my IP

  Not long ago I started to use Ubuntu. When I was on Windows I used Notepad++. I was very surprised when I found that Notepad++ is only for Windows. So I installed Netbeans. Netbeans is a powerful IDE and in general I like it, except default styles. Maybe are there style profiles (i.e. plugins or other forms)? It would be good if there is a style profile completely identical to Notepad++. I will be very thankful if you would help me to find what I'm looking for.

  I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance!   I'm not a programming beginner at all. I've tried 2 libraries/engines so far, allegro and Unity. For allegro. i think its not good if i wanna make a career in gaming industry since its not powerful enough. I don't feel comfortable with unity. Its more like a software like photoshop or flash. You can do almost everything with pre-defined functions, tools and with less coding. I need something which offers less tools and pre defined functions and more coding work. It would be awesome if its free and c/c++ based. I need both 2D/3D. and please, don't tell me to make my own library, i am not "that" advance. Any other information about gaming industry would be greatly appreciated.

I admit I'm one of those guys that like to do premature optimization in a pretty obssessive manner but that's probably because I'm not aware how powerful modern processors are. I can think of lots of sollutions for a problem, but all of them are tough on the memory side, and I keep thinking "This will hurt me more in the future when I'll have to re-do it because it's bad performance-wise." How do you know when the code you are thinking of is going too far and is not a case of premature optimization? How much can your game handle at a time before performance becomes a problem?

• How can I effectively use a netbook and a desktop computer together for programming?

  Currently, in my workspace, I have a netbook sitting off to the side gathering dust while I write code on my desktop. As a result, the only use my netbook gets coding-wise is when I'm writing up a quick Python script to model a given problem or concept in class; I never use it at home for coding, or for anything at all, as it is all possible and faster on my (much more powerful) desktop. I feel like this is wrong and that I should be making better use of my netbook.   I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.
