  • DNS client configuration steps in Oracle Solaris 11

    - by Gurubalan
This guide covers Quick how to configure DNS client on Solaris 11. DNS client configuration in Solaris 11 is based on SMF service rather than file based. When you configure a system as DNS client, you will be performing the following two configurations. I. DNS client setup II. Configure Name service switch to use DNS I. DNS client setup 1. Configure using SMF service network/dns/client # svccfg -s network/dns/clientsvc:/network/dns/client> setprop config/search = astring: ("test.com" "service.test.com")svc:/network/dns/client> setprop config/nameserver = net_address: (192.168.10.10 192.168.10.11)svc:/network/dns/client> exit 2.  Enable the DNS client service (when you configure it for the first time) #svccfg enable -r dns/client 3. Restart/Refresh DNS client service (It is done when there is any update to the configuration) #svccfg refresh dns/client #svccfg restart dns/client 4. • Solaris disk I/O spike... which monitoring tools do I need?

    - by bonez05
Hi all, My Solaris 10 websever / database server disk io keeps spiking at intermittent times. Using iostat -xtc 5 the reads / sec will jump from 3.0 to 1450.0 and %busy will jump to 98% The apache access log doesn't indicate anything out of the ordinary. In other words, requests aren't any higher than usual. top doesn't generate anything useful. The cpu usage is fine with mysql using about 20% and nothing else to speak of really. What monitoring tool should I be using to see what process is using excessive disk I/O? or if there are any other suggestions I'm all ears. Thanks

  • Can Solaris RBAC roles be ported to Linux using SElinux only?

    - by Jimmy
We are migrating an application from Solaris to Linux and the main user is allowed, through the use of RBAC roles, to run a few system commands like svccfg/svcadm (chkconfig on redhat). Is it possible, using only SElinux (no sudo), to allow a normal user to run chkconfig off/on (basically give it the ability to add remove services) ? My approach was to try to create an SElinux user with a corresponding SElinux role that manages the app's domain/type and is allowed to transition to all other domains required to run chkconfig, tcpdump or any other system utility usually restricted to root access only. All my attempts so far have failed, so my second question would be where could I find good documentation that applies to this specific problem ?

  • Solaris Is Dead. Long Live Linux

<b>Linux Magazine:</b> "Hot on the heels of acquiring Sun, Oracle has changed the license for Solaris making it non-free once again. In a time like this, such a move can only be fatal and of course ultimately beneficial to Linux."

  • Solaris: What is the difference between .so and .so.1 files?

    - by Rob Goretsky
I am trying to understand how/why certain library files are dynamically loaded by the linker on Solaris. I am using ldd to see this (with the -s switch to see what paths are tried by the linker). As an example, if I run "ldd /usr/local/bin/isql -s" I notice that one of the libraries that is searched for is called "libodbc.so.1". I notice that this does NOT match a file it finds along the way called "libodbc.so". So, it finally resolves to a place where there is a symbolic link between "libodbc.so.1.0.0" and "libodbc.so.1". My question is - what is the significance of the ".1" here? Is it to indicate a version number? Why do some installers create these symbolic links, while others don't?

  • December 3 is Stephanie Choyer Day

    - by rickramsey
I don't answer Stephanie Choyer's email just so I can enjoy her French accent when she calls. "Reek! Reek! Why do joo not answer my eemails?" Without the French, life on Earth would be so much poorer. No, they don't bring to the party any motorcycles that grow chest on your hair, and the Citroen is such a frightening study in Automobile design that I don't dare climb inside one. But they have French architecture. French sidewalks. French villages. The French Alps. Grenoble. French cheese. French wine. And that glorious French accent. If I were French, I'd spend all my time enjoying being French. Which makes the work that Stephanie does day in and day with our hard-edged technologies and stubborn technologists so admirable. Oracle Solaris 11 Resources for Sysadmins and Developers The page in the link above represents the work of many people, but it was Steph who rounded them up. And it wasn't easy. I know, because I ran and hid from her on many, many occasions. But she was tireless. "Reek. Reek. Why have you not published Glynn's article? Pleeeease, you must!" Remember when tech companies gave you a simple choice? You could either read the 27,000 pages of documentation or a double-sided data sheet. Which will it be, pal? Then they started writing white papers. 74 pages of excellent prose did a beautiful job of explaining why the technology was fantastic, but never told you how to use it. Well, have you taken a look at these? How-To Technical Articles for System Admins and Developers Now you can get wicked excited about a cool technique described in a 74-page white paper, and find a technical article that shows you exactly how to use it. The wicked smart marketing folks on the Oracle Solaris team wrote them, but it was Steph who bribed them with a Cabernet or beat them over the head with a baguette until all that work was finished and posted on OTN. There are songs about French wine, but not about French vintners. There are songs about French cities, but not about French bricklayers. About French sidewalks, but not about the French policemen who keep them safe. As far as I know, there are no songs about OTN, but if there were, they would probably neglect to mention Steph. Which is why today, Dec 3rd, we celebrate Stephanie Choyer Day. We dedicate this day to our relentless, hardworking, tireless, patient and friendly French colleague with the delightful accent. If I knew how to speak French, I'd say "Thanks for all you do" in French. But I don't speak French. And I don't trust online translations. I'd probably wind up saying "My left foot yearns for curdled milk." So here it is in plain old English: Thank you, Stephanie. psssst! about that documentation and those white papers ... In case you haven't noticed, the Oracle Solaris doc team has done some pretty cool things with the Solaris docs. And those white papers are interesting reading, well worth setting aside some time. Because with Solaris, as you know, it's not just about getting by with a rudimentary grasp of the basics. It's about the amazing stuff savvy sysadmins and developers can do when they really understand it. • Good ways to restart all the computers in a remote cluster?

    - by vgm64
I have a cluster that I manage and from time to time I get emails from each node (and head node) begging to be restarted after an automatic upgrade. Currently, my best solution so far is a shell script like: $> cat cluster_reboot.sh ssh [email protected] reboot ssh [email protected] reboot ssh [email protected] reboot ssh [email protected] reboot ssh [email protected] reboot ssh [email protected] reboot I end up just typing the root password six times, but it works, I guess. Is there a better way? Can I force the head node to reboot the computers for me?

  • SLES 11 - ocfs2 - Locking does not appear to work

    - by Autobyte
Hi I have two SLES 11 servers that are SAN attached to a Clarion CX-340. The SAN partition has been formatted with ocfs2 and I have both machines setup in a cluster and the cluster is running (all appears to be normal). I have a small java application as a locking test and when I run the application on both machines at the same time, I should get the lock on one server and the other should refuse the lock since the first already holds a lock on that file but in this case both servers get a lock on the same file. Basically my cluster.conf looks like this: node: ip_port = 7777 ip_address = 192.168.10.121 number = 1 name = osrsles10node1 cluster = osrsles10 node: ip_port = 7777 ip_address = 192.168.10.122 number = 2 name = osrsles10node2 cluster = osrsles10 cluster: node_count = 2 name = osrsles10 Please ask for any other info - I really need these locks to be exclusive to each server. Thanks.

  • Do I need to buy Mysql cluster enterprise edition?

    - by Arman
Hello, we have a ms-sql 2008 standard edition. The db became too huge, about 8 10^9 records.the db files are about 4.5tb each. We cannot effort us to get enterprise edition to slice the database. We need partitioning. So the idea is to use Mysql cluster with many datanodes. We already started to move data. I wondered do we need to buy a licens for mysqlcluster?are there performance difference between community edition and commercial one? Thanks Arman.

  • How do I network this Windows Failover Cluster and MongoDB Replica Set? (diagram inside)

    - by arex1337
As you can see, my two Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC) nodes have three network interfaces each, which connects them to three different networks : A public network A private network consisting of the WSFC nodes A private network consisting of the WSFC nodes and a machine with the WSFC Quorum Witness File Share Does this network configuration I've planned, make sense? Do I have the "right" number of NICs and networks? I'm thinking the 2nd NIC/network may be unnecessary. My two MongoDB Replica Set nodes also have three network interfaces each - very similar to the previous situation: A public network A private network consisting of the primary and secondary MongoDB Replica Set nodes A private network consisting of the primary, secondary and arbiter MongoDB Replica Set nodes Does this network configuration, make sense? Do I have the "right" number of NICs and networks? I'm thinking the 2nd NIC/network may be unnecessary. Here is the simpler version I'm considering: UPDATE:

  • How to manage several Linux workstation like a cluster?

    - by Richard Zak
How does one go about managing a lab of Linux workstations? I'd like for users to be able to log in, run their GUI apps (LibreOffice, Firefox, Eclipse, etc), and for the computers to be able to be used as compute nodes (OpenMPI). This part I'm fine with. But how can I centrally deploy a new software package or upgrade an installed package? How can I reload the entire OS on a given node, as if these workstations were part of a super computing cluster? Is there a nice program to help with setting up PXE booting and image management, and remotely managing packages? Ideally such a system would work with Ubuntu. If there isn't a nice package, how could this be set up manually?

  • What is and what is not replicated in a glassfish cluster with a mod_jk load balancer?

    - by Navigateur
I have a Glassfish (3.1.2) cluster over 2 computers as nodes, with a mod_jk load balancer. Are servlet instance variables replicated perfectly? If not, how do I make sure it is? Are all actions, including method calls and disk writes, replicated perfectly? If not, how do I make sure they are? These may seem like stupid questions, but I'm not seeking "load balancing" as much as I am seeking exact replication to enable future upgrading without any service interruption. How do I achieve this if it is not already the case?

  • Dynamic changes to thread stack size in Solaris 9 ?

    - by Satya
Hello, I am looking for a configurable / tunable on Solaris 9 through which I can change the default thread stack size without recompiling the code to use "pthread_attr_setstacksize" For example on HPUX 11.11 / 11.23 the environment variable "PTHREAD_DEFAULT_STACK_SIZE" can be exported (available via HPUX patches PHCO_38307 / PHCO_38955 ) - Is there a equivalent Solaris 9 way to achieve the same ? Thanks! Satya

  • On Solaris, how do you mount a second zfs system disk for diagnostics?

    - by Matt Ball
I've got two hard disks in my computer, and have installed Solaris 10u8 on the first and Opensolaris 2010.3 (dev onnv_134) on the second. Both systems uses ZFS and were independently created with a zpool name of 'rpool'. While running Solaris 10u8 on the first disk, how do I mount the second ZFS hard disk (at /dev/dsk/c1d1s0) on an arbitrary mount point (like /a) for diagnostics?

  • Clustered Graphs Visualization Techniques

    - by jameszhao00
I need to visualize a relatively large graph (6K nodes, 8K edges) that has the following properties: Distinct Clusters. Approximately 50-100 Nodes per cluster and moderate interconnectivity at the cluster level Minimal (5-10 inter-cluster edges per cluster) interconnectivity between clusters Let global edge overlap = The edge overlaps caused by directly visualizing a graph of Clusters = {A, B, C, D, E}, Edges = {Pentagram of those clusters, which is non-planar by the way and will definitely generate edge overlap if you draw it out directly} Let Local Edge Overlap = the above but { A, B, C, D, E } are just nodes. I need to visualize graphs with the above in a way that satisfies the following requirements No global edge overlap (i.e. edge overlaps caused by inter-cluster properties is not okay) Local edge overlap within a cluster is fine Anyone have thoughts on how to best visualize a graph with the requirements above? One solution I've come up with to deal with the global edge overlap is to make sure a cluster A can only have a max of 1 direct edge to another cluster (B) during visualization. Any additional inter-cluster edges between cluster A - C, A - D, ... are disconnected and additional node/edges A - A_C, C - C_A, A - A_D, D - D_A... are created. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • How should I monitor memory usage/performance in SunOS/Solaris?

    - by exhuma
Last week we decided to add some SunOS (uname -a = SunOS bbs-sam-belair 5.10 Generic_127128-11 i86pc i386 i86pc) machines into our running munin instance. First off, the machines are pre-configured appliances, so, I want to avoid touching the system too much without supervision of the service provider. But adding it to munin was fairly easy by writing a small socket-service (if anyone is interested, I put it up on github: https://github.com/munin-monitoring/contrib/tree/master/tools/pypmmn) Yesterday, I implemented/adapted the required plugins for our machines. And here the questions start: First, I have not found a way to determine detailed memory usage values. I get the total memory by running prtconf | grep Memory, and the free memory using vmstat. Fiddling together a munin-plugin, gives me the following graph: This is pretty much uninformative. Compare this to the default plugin for linux nodes which has a lot more detail: Most importantly, this shows me how much memory is actually used by applications. So, first question: Is it possible to get detailed memory information on SunOS with the default system tools (i.e. not using top)? Onto the next puzzle: Seeing the graphs, I noticed activity in the "Paging in/out" graphs, even though the memory graph still has unused memory: Upon further investigation, I found out that df reports that /tmp is mounted on swap. Drilling around on the web, I understood that df will display swap, but in fact, it's mounted as a tmpfs. Now I don't know if this explains the swap activity. The default munin-plugin for solaris uses kstat -p -c misc -m cpu_stat to get these values. I find it already strange that this is using the cpu_stat module. So maybe I simply misinterpret the "paging" graphs? Second question: Do the paging graphs indicate that parts of the memory are paged to disk? Or is the activity caused by file operations in /tmp?
