  • External disk not working with Mac OS X 10.5

    Hi: My OS is 10.5.7. I have an external hard disk, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), connected to my Mac machine through USB cable. I have used it for a while, but now it is not working. Error showed in /var/log/system.log. USBF: 2521.384 AppleUSBEHCI[0xa515800]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0xfd, timing out! (Addr: 0, EP: 0) ..... ...... kernel[0]: USBF: 2588.616 [0xa6baa00] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device. Luckily, in my work place there is a Mac with OS 10.4, so I had plugged the disk into the 10.4 machine and it worked!!! I did checked "System Profiler" on both machines (10.5, 10.4). Under usb section, for 10.5 it shows USBEHCI, under 10.4, it shows USBOHCI. I am not a expert on USB Device , can any one tell me why 10.5 cause the problem. it was worked under 10.5

  • Mac OS X 10.5+ and POSIX

    Hello, I need to program an authentication module that has to work with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and at the same time needs to be POSIX-compliant. I read here: developer.apple.com/leopard/overview/osfoundations.html that since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Mac OS X is POSIX-compliant (to POSIX 1003.1), but working under MAC OS X 10.5 Leopard myself, I can't find any trace of my user name neither in /etc/passwd nor in its successor /etc/master.passwd, which is mentioned here: developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man5/passwd.5.html Instead it says in both files OpenDirectory Service is used, which should be OpenLDAP according to the OpenDirectoryService man-page. Is this still POSIX-compliant ? I guess not. I wonder how Mac OS X would handle my 100% POSIX-compliant code which depends on /etc/passwd ?   • DllImport Based on OS Platform

    I have a mixture of unmanaged code ( backend) and managed code ( front end), as such, I would need to call the unmanaged code from my managed code, using interop techniques and DllImport attribute. Now, I've compiled two versions of unmanaged code, for both 32 and 64 bit OS; they are named service32.dll and service64.dll respectively. So, in my .Net code, I would have to do a DllImport for both dlls: [DllImport(@"service32.dll")] //for 32 bit OS invocation public static void SimpleFunction(); [DllImport(@"service64.dll")] //for 64 bit OS invocation public static void SimpleFunction(); And call them depending on which platform my application is running on. The issue now is that for every unmanaged function, I have to declared it twice, one for 32 bit OS and one for 64 bit OS. This is a duplication of work, and everytime I change the signature of an unmanaged function, I have to modified it in two places. Is there anyway that I can change the argument in DllImport so that the correct dll will be invoked automagically, depending on the platform?

    I'm planning to implement a framework for monitoring OS level resources: process network stats cpu info etc using JAVA. I see there is SIGAR API by Spring, which is implemented in native language and JAVA API being provided on top. But I will prefer not to have native stuff in my framework, rather for each OS will write a Java Class which will fetch required OS info by running system commands via JAVA Runtime. So I would like to have inputs/suggestions that one may have seen of not doing this in JAVA and use native app/api/jni. Any example will help for sure. I agree each OS has different commands to get these stats, but will prefer to have a Java Class per OS than have/load native code.

  • Squid refresh_pattern won't cache "Expires: ..."

    Background I frequent the OpenGL ES documentation site at http://www.khronos.org/opengles/sdk/1.1/docs/man/. Even though the content is completely static, it seems to force a reload on every single page I visit, which is very annoying. I have a squid 3.0 proxy set up (apt-get install squid3 on Ubuntu 10.04), and I added a refresh_pattern to force the pages to cache: refresh_pattern ^http://www.khronos.org/opengles/sdk/1\.1/docs/man/ … 1440 20% 10080 … override-expire ignore-reload ignore-no-cache ignore-private ignore-no-store This is all on one line, of course. While this appears to work for the XHTML documents (e.g., glBindTexture), it fails to cache the linked content, such as the DTD, some .ent files (?) and some XSL files. The delay in fetching these extra files delays rendering of the main document, so my principal annoyance isn't fixed. The only difference I can glean with these ancillary files is that they come with an Expires: header set to the current time, whereas the XHTML document has none. But I would have expected the override-expire option to fix this. I have confirmed that documents have the same base URL. I have also truncated the pattern to varying degrees, with no effect. My questions Why does the override-expire option not seem to work? Is there a simple way to tell squid to unconditionally cache a document, no matter what it finds in the response headers?   • Deleting a single file from the trash in Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    In earlier versions of Mac OS X one could delete a file from the trash by opening a terminal window and typing rm ~/.Trash/file_i_want_to_delete. See this previous post. Unlike earlier versions in Mac OS X Snow Leopard one can "put back" a file from the trash into its original directory. Will the rm trick still work? Testing shows it does delete the file but what happens to the "put back" information that specifies the directory from which the file was deleted?

  • Kinesis Advantage OS X media keys

    I recently started using a Kinesis Advantage with my MacBook and one of the things I've really missed since switching from my Apple keyboard is having the functionality of the OS X media keys. I know the Advantage keyboards are pretty customisable but having Googled for quite a while I haven't been able to find any sources saying that it's possible to map the function keys on the Advantage to the appropriate OS X function. Has anyone had any success in getting something like this to work? Any tips would be hugely appreciated.

  • Can you set up a gaming LAN using OpenVPN installed in a VMware guest OS and be playing the game on the host OS?

    I would like to setup a gaming VPN. Ie. I have some games that work over LAN and would like to play them with people that are not on my LAN. I know I can do this with OpenVPN. My ultimate goal would be to run OpenVPN portably on my host OS and not even need any virtualization. As such i don't want to install it on my host, but i'm fine with running it portably. I'm even fine with temporarily adding registry keys, and then running a .reg file to remove these entries once i'm done. To this effect i have installed OpenVPN on a virtual machine and diffed the registry. I then manually (using a .reg file) added all the keys that seem important on my host OS and copied the installation folder of OpenVPN onto my host machine. Then i try to run openVPN GUI 1.0.3 as a test and it says "Error opening registy for reading (HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenVPN). OpenVPN is probably not installed". I verified that that key is indeed in the registry with all subkeys and it looks correct. I have tried running the GUI as an administrator and in compatibility mode with no success. I am running Windows 7. If this fails then i would be happy with installing OpenVPN on a virtual machine in VMWare but they key is that i will be running the game installed on my host machine. The first question for this option is if this is even possible. The second is, that I can't get the VM to have internet access if I use bridging but i can if i use NAT. Is it possible to do this game VPN setup with VMWare guest OS running using NAT? Summary of questions: -Is it possible to run openVPN portably and if so what did i miss above? -If it's not possible to run it portably, then can setup a gaming LAN by installing OpenVPN in a guest OS with NAT and how can i do this? -If the above is not possible then can i install OpenVPN in a guest using bridging and if so how can i set this up with a Windows 7 host and Windows XP guest as currently i can't get the guest to be able to access the internet in bridging mode, but it working in NAT mode. -In general is there any good documentation on setting up a gaming LAN with OpenVPN (i am using 2.1.4) as i have never set up a VPN of any sort before so any help would be much appreciated.     Hi there We have a Mac OS X Server setup to be a VPN as well, we also have a freelancer who wants log in to the Mac OS X VPN on our server, but he keeps getting errors. I have tested the VPN with our Macs, and they connect fine using Snow Leopard. Our VPN type is L2TP over IPSec and we use a shared secret instead of a certificate. Does anyone have any pointers for me?

  • Can't get iPhone to Sync with MacBook running OS X.

    I can't get the iPhone to sync with my MacBook running OS X, I've re-installed OS X and iTunes and then it worked, however once the MacBook had been switched off and on again the iPhone wouldn't sync. I then deleted AppleMobileDevice.kext, DeviceLink.Framework, MobileDevice.Framework and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pky and re-installed iTunes, this then solved the problem until the MacBook was turned off and then on again. I've run out of ideas. Many thanks Nicolas
