  • Any reason not to disable the Windows pagefile given enough physical RAM?

    - by Evgeny
The question of disabling the Windows pagefile has already been discussed quite a bit, for example here and here and here. People continue to upvote answers that say "you should not disable your pagefile even if you have plenty of RAM", but I have yet to see any concrete, verifiable reasons being given for this advice. As far as I can see, if you never need to read from the pagefile (because you have enough RAM) then performance could only be worse with it enabled due to Windows pre-emptively writing to it. At best, performance would be the same. I can't see how it could possibly be improved by writing data you never need to read. So my question is: Assuming that I have enough physical RAM for everything I do, is there any reason I should not disable the pagefile? Let's say the version of Windows is Windows XP x64 SP2 or Windows Server 2003 x64 SP2 (same thing). If it's different for Windows Server 2008 x64 I'd be interested to hear an answer for that as well. I'm looking for specific, objective reasons from good sources, not just opinions. Something like "here are the benchmarks done with and without a pagefile and the results were better with a pagefile, even with enough RAM" or "according to this MS KB article problem X occurs if you disable the pagefile". So far the only reasons I've seen mentioned are: Even if you think you have enough RAM you might run out. OK, but for the purposes of this question, let's just take it as a given that I have enough. Maybe I only ever read my email and I have 16GB RAM. Or 128GB. Or 1TB. Or whatever - but it's enough for 100% of what I do, 100% of the time. Another way to think of it is: if I have x MB physical RAM and y MB pagefile and I never run out of RAM in that configuration, would I not be better off, performance-wise, with x+y MB physical RAM and no pagefile? Windows is "used to" having a paging file and it might not function as reliably (from Understanding the Impact of RAM on Overall System Performance That's rather vague and I find it hard to believe, given that MS has provided the option to disable the pagefile. Windows knows what it's doing better than you. No - it doesn't know that I won't run more programs or load more data, but I do.

  • Channel Audio from .mp4?

    - by Kyle
Hi there. I am at a loss here after searching around with no results. I am attempting to channel the audio specifically from an .mp4 for use in a driver. I am aware that there are programs which extract the audio from .mp4's, but I am looking for another approach without using external applications such as those.. is there any direction that someone can point me towards to solve this problem? Thanks, -K

  • Use only alpha channel of texture in OpenGL?

    - by Chris
Hey, I'm trying to draw a constant color to the framebuffer and blend it using the alpha channel from an RGBA texture. I've been looking at glBlendFunc and glBlendColor, but can't seem to figure out a way to ignore the RGB values from the texture. I'm thinking I'll have to pull out the alpha values myself and make a second texture with GL_ALPHA. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks!

  • Asterisk TDM Out Channel Not Recording

    - by Benny
I am trying to use the monitor command to record a TDM extension, but only the in chnnnel is being recorded. The out channel is 44 bytes and obviously no audio within. However, when monitoring a SIP or IAX phone, no problems exist. Is there some configuration I'm missing for distinguishing between TDM and SIP/IAX for recording? Thanks in advance!

  • Random RAM usage amounts

    - by DTown
I was hoping someone could explain why my application when loaded uses varying amounts of RAM. I'm speaking about a compiled version that uses the exe directly. It's a pretty basic applications and there are no conditional branches in the startup of the application. Yet every time I start it up the RAM amount varies from 6MB-16MB. I know it's on the small end of usage anyways but I'm curious of why this happens.

The first time this happened, Linux's Magic SysRq worked and did a soft reboot, and after that everything was fine till it went to sleep again. It wakes up and gives me this. Can someone tell me whats wrong with my laptop? NOTE: This only happens when I close the screen. My computer doesn't go to sleep with the screen open.

  • Having trouble keeping a 1GB RAM Centos server running

    - by Josh
This is my first time configuring a VPS server and I'm having a few issues. We're running Wordpress on a 1GB Centos server configured per the internet (online research). No custom queries or anything crazy but closing in on 8K posts. At arbitrary intervals, the server just goes down. From the client side, it just says "Loading..." and will spin more or less indefinitely. On the server side, the shell will lock completely. We have to do a hard reboot from the control panel and then everything is fine. Watching "top" I see it hovering between 35 - 55% memory usage generally and occasional spikes up to around 80%. When I saw it go down, there were about 30 - 40 Apache processes showing which pushed memory over the edge. "error_log" tells me that maxclients was reached right before each reboot instance. I've tried tinkering with that but to no avail. I think we'll probably need to bump the server up to the next RAM level but with ~120K pageviews per month, it seems like that's a bit overkill since it was running fairly well on a shared server before. Any ideas? httpd.conf and my.cnf values to add? I'll update this with the current ones if that helps. Thanks in advance! This has been a fun and important learning experience but, overall, quite frustrating! Edit: quick top snapshot: top - 15:18:15 up 2 days, 13:04, 1 user, load average: 0.56, 0.44, 0.38 Tasks: 85 total, 2 running, 83 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 6.7%us, 3.5%sy, 0.0%ni, 89.6%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st Mem: 2051088k total, 736708k used, 1314380k free, 199576k buffers Swap: 4194300k total, 0k used, 4194300k free, 287688k cached

What should i buy? SODDR3, 4GB, 1066MHZ, PC3-8500, 204PIN? or SODDR3, 4GB, 1333MHZ, PC3-10666, 204PIN? • 0.00006103515625 GB of RAM. Is .NET MicroFramework part of Windows CE?

    - by Rocket Surgeon
The .NET MicroFramework claims to work on 64K RAM and has list of compatible targets vendors. At the same time, same vendors who ship hardware and create Board Support Packages (vendors like Adeneo) keep releasing something named Windows 7 CE BSP for the same hardware targets. Obviously the OS as heavy as WinCE needs more than 64K RAM. So, somehow .NET MicroFramework is relevant to WinCE, but how ? Is it part of bigger OS or is it base of it, or are both mutually exclusive ? Background: 0.00006103515625 GByte of RAM is same as 64Kbyte of RAM. I am looking for possiblity to use Microsoft development tools for small target like BeagleBone. http://www.adeneo-embedded.com/About-Us/News/Release-of-TI-BeagleBone Nice. Now .. where is a MicroFramework for the same beaglebone ? Is it inside the released pile ?

  • SetPixelFormat is not creating an alpha channel for OpenGL

    - by i_photon
    I've been able to do this before, and I don't know what changed between two weeks ago and the last windows update, but for some reason SetPixelFormat isn't creating an alpha channel. gDebugger shows that the window's back buffer only has 3 channels. White+0 alpha renders as white. So there is something inherently wrong with what I was doing, or an update broke it. The code below should be paste-able into an empty VS project. #include <Windows.h> #include <dwmapi.h> #include <gl/GL.h> #pragma comment(lib,"opengl32.lib") #pragma comment(lib,"dwmapi.lib") HWND hWnd = 0; HDC hDC = 0; HGLRC hRC = 0; LRESULT CALLBACK WndProc(HWND, UINT, WPARAM, LPARAM); int APIENTRY WinMain( HINSTANCE hInstance, HINSTANCE hPrevInstance, LPSTR lpCmdLine, int nCmdShow ) { WNDCLASSEX wcex = {0}; wcex.cbSize = sizeof(WNDCLASSEX); wcex.lpfnWndProc = WndProc; wcex.hCursor = LoadCursor(NULL, IDC_ARROW); wcex.lpszClassName = TEXT("why_class"); RegisterClassEx(&wcex); // no errors hWnd = CreateWindowEx( NULL, TEXT("why_class"), TEXT("why_window"), WS_OVERLAPPEDWINDOW, 128,128, 256,256, NULL, NULL, hInstance, NULL ); // no errors PIXELFORMATDESCRIPTOR pfd = {0}; pfd.nSize = sizeof(pfd); pfd.nVersion = 1; pfd.dwFlags = PFD_DRAW_TO_WINDOW| PFD_SUPPORT_OPENGL| PFD_DOUBLEBUFFER| PFD_SUPPORT_COMPOSITION; pfd.cColorBits = 32; pfd.cAlphaBits = 8; // need an alpha channel pfd.cDepthBits = 24; pfd.cStencilBits = 8; hDC = GetDC(hWnd); int i = ChoosePixelFormat(hDC,&pfd); SetPixelFormat(hDC,i,&pfd); // no errors hRC = wglCreateContext(hDC); // no errors wglMakeCurrent(hDC,hRC); // no errors // EDIT: Turn on alpha testing (which actually won't // fix the clear color problem below) glEnable(GL_BLEND); glBlendFunc(GL_SRC_ALPHA,GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA); // EDIT: Regardless of whether or not GL_BLEND is enabled, // a clear color with an alpha of 0 should (or did at one time) // make this window transparent glClearColor( 0,0,0, // if this is (1,1,1), the window renders // solid white regardless of the alpha 0 // changing the alpha here has some effect ); DWM_BLURBEHIND bb = {0}; bb.dwFlags = DWM_BB_ENABLE|DWM_BB_TRANSITIONONMAXIMIZED; bb.fEnable = TRUE; bb.fTransitionOnMaximized = TRUE; DwmEnableBlurBehindWindow(hWnd,&bb); // no errors ShowWindow(hWnd, SW_SHOWNORMAL); UpdateWindow(hWnd); // no errors MSG msg = {0}; while(true){ GetMessage(&msg,NULL,NULL,NULL); if(msg.message == WM_QUIT){ return (int)msg.wParam; } TranslateMessage(&msg); DispatchMessage(&msg); glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT|GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT); glBegin(GL_TRIANGLES); // this vertex should be transparent, // as it was when I last built this test // // it renders as white glColor4f(1,1,1,0); glVertex2f(0,0); glColor4f(0,1,1,1); glVertex2f(1,0); glColor4f(1,0,1,1); glVertex2f(0,1); glEnd(); SwapBuffers(hDC); } return (int)msg.wParam; } LRESULT CALLBACK WndProc(HWND hWnd, UINT message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { switch (message) { case WM_DESTROY: { PostQuitMessage(0); }return 0; default: break; } return DefWindowProc(hWnd, message, wParam, lParam); }
