  • What is WCF (and pros and cons)?

    I am trying to understand what is WCF, but can't get a visual understanding of how it adds value (reading msdn does'nt help). I have worked with COM in the past, and I know about webservices. Can someone shed some light on what is WCF and its pros and cons (maybe how it relates to COM or replaces COM etc)? Links to reference web sites would also be great. Thanks

    I would like to use Windows Forms with a WCF service and leverage the pre-built authentication of asp.net by using aspNetCompatibilityEnabled = true in the WCF service. Is there any module or pre-built assemblies that can add ASP.NET functionality to a Windows Forms application? As far as I understand, this functionality isn't built into Windows Forms and can't be leveraged.

    I'm trying to send objects retrieved by NHibernate over WCF, but whenever a have a property of ICollection I get an exception. When NHibernate gets the data from the database this property is intitialized with an instance of PersistentGenericSet. Is there a way I can send a PersistentGenericSet over WCF? -or- Is there some way making NHibernate initialize these properties with another type?

    I am having trouble trying to connect an Infopath 2007 form to an WCF web service. I appears that the Infopath only wants to communicate via a SOAP 1.0 message. To get around the issue for the moment I have created an .asmx web service. Should I consider continuing down this workaround or figure out a way to get WCF to dish out SOAP 1.0 1.1 messages?

    I created a web application in which one .aspx page calls an AJAX-enabled WCF service (created with Visual Studio 2008 Add New Item - AJAX-enabled WCF Service). when I test the application in Visual Studio, it works and the page can call the service from Javascript but when I "publish" (code precompilation using Visual Studio) it to the local IIS Server, I get an error : "service ThunServ is undefined" in my .html page. I assume it should be running on a separate thread, however, the server UI (WinForms) becomes locked when someone downloads a file. Is there a way to manage the WCF threading model? Thank you!
