  I finally did the work necessary to improve the codegen for finally handlers. More improvements are still possible, but at least most finally handlers will now execute without touching the exception object (and hence without having to do any mapping/stack trace collection work). It also means that assembly file sizes are a little bit smaller and that the debugging experience should be improved (less exception catching & rethrowing). • Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 - 100% CPU usage alternating between cores

  I've noticed my Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 has been getting a bit sluggish lately - things like Gnome Shell overview animation are jerky where they were lightning fast, Elder Scrolls Online is stuttering and dropping to low FPS where I previously had a solid 50-60 fps. Out of interest I looked at the CPU History, and when running nothing but the system monitor, I was getting this: That was 15 minutes ago. The 100% load seemed to be alternating between the cores. PC specs: i3 2130 processor. 8gb DDR3 RAM. ASUS P8-Z77M motherboard. Samsung 128gb SSD I've been trying to reproduce the problem, and while I'm not getting the 100% any more at idle, the system monitor is showing an average load of about 20-30%, that's with just Chrome and the System Monitor open. Oddly, if I touch nothing, it'll average out to about 20% - if I start moving the mouse around and do some typing, it's closer to 40%. Is this normal? Any help appreciated, I wouldn't even know where to start here..

• why google ignore my links page?

  I have a website, where im loading all the data via AJAX. since, google doesn't work with AJAX, and the ways to make it AJAX-friendly are a bit odd, i thought that by creating a links page, where it links, from server side, to all the links that im loading in ajax - will solve the problem. but unfortunately, that doesnt seem to work. google webmaster shows that even though my links page discovered, the content of it - the links - are totally ignored. I can only assume that google tend to ignore links in such pages. my question is - WHY?! and furthermore, how to overcome this. Thanks.

• Java still dont recognize horizontal scroll (right click) 14.04

  I am totally trackpoint fan, I use it all the time and have disablet my touchpad. Due to my study I work a lot with MATLAB, but MATLAB uses Java, and horizontal scroll does not be recognized by java as I already reat in many other threats(well it recognizes as right click :S ). There seems to be no solution for that and disable horizontal scroll in matlab is no solution for me at all. Does anybody know about a fix for that or somehow to enable horizontal scroll java. This really drives me crazy. HELP! • I love video games and know I want to work in the sector but hate programming

  I just hate how I'll put in 8-10 hours in and get little to nothing back. The return results for your efforts seem to be pathetically small the majority of the time and I don't find that rewarding enough for me to put in the time and effort to learn programming and make myself better. I've heard game design is fun and I think I'd love that but apparently you can only get into that really if you can program, is that true? I feel a bit lost because I'm doing a degree in Games Technology and am worried that I'm sending myself into a job I'll hate.

• How to deal with animated doors in isometric tiles

  I've got a tricky issue I'm not sure how to tackle best: I have an animated tile of a door. When it's closed it should be sorted one way, but when it's openend it will need to be sorted a different way, as it belonging to a different(neighbouring tile). Here's the door closed: and the door opened: I imagine it would be possible to override the sorting system for such tiles and adjust the sorting based on the frame, but it feels a bit hacky. Has anyone encountered a similar scenario ? Any elegant solutions ?

• /var/lib/dpkg/lock.....help!

  I had to reinstall the entire OS a little while ago and I have been trying to reinstall all of the programs I had before but I got a bit a of a problem now. I was trying to download dropbox from synaptic but it cannot finish the process and as a result I cannot update anything anymore. The line that comes out is: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? I have tried: sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get -f install sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock sudo apt-get -f update sudo dpkg --clear-selections sudo dpkg --configure -a But nothing seems to work. So is there a way to solve this?? Thanks

  I am the owner of http://www.YouReview.net and I am constantly getting requests from people asking me to remove links to their sites or they will Disavow the links and they threaten me with Google penalties. All of this is a bit frustrating because first I use nofollow on any link outside the YouReview.net domain. Second, I've never heard of Google penalizing a site for linking to other websites. My question is twofold: Do disavowed links penalize the site that was disavowed? and Does the "nofollow" attribute on tags absolutely guarantee that the link is not followed and not counted for search engine ranking? Why don't more people know about nofollow?

  A simple question about rsnapshot. In order to perform daily backups I'm going to add lines to cron in my Ubuntu. Then, why do I have also these lines in the rsnapshot.conf ? ######################################### # BACKUP INTERVALS # # Must be unique and in ascending order # # i.e. hourly, daily, weekly, etc. # ######################################### interval hourly 6 interval daily 7 interval weekly 4 #interval monthly 3 If I use cron, should I disable them ? thanks ps. I've just realized that in the crontab I still have "hourly" and "daily". Should I then uncomment only the one I use in the crontab ? • Alternatives to the GPL

  I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

• Best way to slice up a non rectangular image?

  I have the image below and need to create a rollover for each "piece" or arrow in the circle. Because the image isn't rectangular, it boggles how me how I'm going to do this without having badly overlapping pieces. As you can see from the image below, the slices will overlap each other (quite a bit), which will not be good for the rollover. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to accomplish this without resorting to Flash or HTML5? The majority of our site's users use dinosaur browsers that don't support HTML5. • Learning the basics

  I am a Linux server administrator first and foremost... Having said that, I have been asked by a former high school teacher of mine to teach students a bit about programming. Like any Linux administrator, I know my fair share of Python and Bash. The problem is that I know NOTHING about the lower level stuff like "machine code" and compilation. The main purpose of this series is to teach programming, not computer science, so I don't need a graduate degree's level of knowledge for this, they will be learning Python first and foremost. However, I would like to learn enough to at least broach the subject with them, any ideas where I can learn that kind of stuff relatively quickly?

• joomla sometimes messes up urls, probably cache involved

  Is a bit i'm having this problem and i really cannot get the hang of it... Every once in while my joomla site messes up links url and for example from something like this: http://www.sism.org/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userslist&listid=4&Itemid=123 it becomes like this: http://www.sism.org/index.php/component/k2/administrator/components/com_dump/assets/css/images/stories/inrilievo/sism/htm/index.php?option=com_comprofiler&task=userslist&listid=4&Itemid=123 the new page has the right content but there are no css and other linked resources. Usually i solve the problem by deleting all the cache and turning it off and on again. Of course this is pretty annoying especially for my association. Does any one have any clue on this? Watching the URLs the components involved seems to be K2 and Jdump. Thanks

  I recently bought a new computer (Asus 1015 cx) with Ubuntu (12.4) as preinstalled system. My problem is with the internet. The computer connects just fine to the free wifi we have at home, but in college, we have a little bit different system. There is wifi, but it is not free - everyone receives a user name and a password. I cant manage to estabilish this Pppoe connection - the computer "sees" where can it connect, but I dont know where to write my username and password. It is not the DSL connection, what I have already tried. Can you help me?

• Web Platform Installer issues deploying Azure SDK 1.4 on refreshed systems.

  Recently I have been doing quite a bit of testing on different means to deploy the Azure SDKs and such. After a very successful couple of systems, I started running into issues last night. Here is the problem, if I go to the Windows Azure Website, and go to Develop, then click on the SDK and Tools, then Get Tools & SDK, it launches the Web Platform Installer.  All seems well at that point, except it will go through the initial process, will find the SDK files for 1.4, but since the tools for Visual Studio are still 1.3, the location throws back a 404, which causes the Installer to fail.  NOTE:If you already had SDK 1.3 and the tools in place, it will go through.   I have been testing Pentaho BI server community edition, and after reading their licensing terms I found out that the community edition is under GPLv2. As you may know the server is intended to host different types of files and applications (like reports, olap cubes,etc...) My question is : are we allowed to sell applications that run on the GPLv2 server ? (we will maybe modify the server source code a bit but we won't charge it to our clients. thus the modified GPL server will be just an execution environment or a container for the reports and applications that we intend to sell) ? this suggests that our clients must install the GPL v2 edition first and then buy from us the reports that work on it but not their source code. • What undergraduate course to choose for a mature programmer returning to study

  I have been developing applications (mostly web-based) for almost 10 years now and have learnt pretty much everything I know through experience (and the internet!). I wouldn't call myself an advanced programmer, but I am quite proficient in several languages (C#, Javascript, Ruby, HTML/CSS etc) and spend a quite a bit of time working on personal projects and reading countless books & articles. I am looking to emigrate to Canada, hopefully Vancouver (im from the UK) and one way would be on a student visa, if I was going to be studying for a minimum of 2 years. Having never been to university or achieved anything higher than A-Levels I am quite tempted by this path. The thought of learning is more exciting to me now than it was 10 years ago! What would be people recommend as a good undergraduate course to take that would complement this career path? Would Math be beneficial, if so which area of Math? TL;DR What undergraduate course/area of study would complement 10 years of (mostly web-based) programming experience?

I would like windows Office on Ubuntu but that means using Wine, which I don't want. I tried using wine but it went a teansy bit wrong (where i have no idea). So I tend to avoid it. • Importance of certifications for Java programmer without BS degree?

  I've read some posts here and other places about how a lot of people don't put much value in certifications but I am beginning to think it may be necessary for me at this point to be able to move to a bigger company, etc. I currently work as a Java programmer with a startup and worked with a small company before that. Now that I'm applying with larger companies the hr people / recruiters have been asking a lot about certifications and some have directly suggested that someone in my position should probably get a few (they were trying to be helpful) since I haven't completed a BS degree yet (I bounced around a bit in college and ended up not finishing but have enough units to finish eventually, just its not something I can do nearly as easily as getting certifications). Anyways, just curious about what people think for someone in my situation where I do have an interested in working for large companies and do not currently have a BS degree (but do have experience already in the field). Any advice on which certifications beyond the SCJP would be appreciated as well

• Trying to run 32bit windows game in wine on 64bit 12.04

  I am trying to run Icewind dale2 from GOG.com in wine on ubuntu 12.04 64bit. I am using the AMD ATI binary blob display driver. Running the file command on /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 gives: george@devbox:/usr/lib32/fglrx$ file libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1.2: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, stripped george@devbox:/usr/lib32/fglrx$ So I definetly have 32bit opengl. I am using latest Playonlinux and tried this on wine 1.4 and 1.5... How can I force wine to use my opengl library?

• How do I get my RTL8192ce based wireless device working properly?

  I am using the rtl8192cu chipset (on a Belkin wireless USB adapter N300) combined with 64 bit architecture and the 3.8 kernel. Some of you may know that this doesn't work. I tried this fix - RTL8188CU USB Network Adaptor on ubuntu 13.04 and now my internet is super slow. I am totally new to Ubuntu and I am concerned I do not have the right driver. The "stock" driver was the RTL8192cu, but it didn't connect 99% of the time and if it did the upload speed was higher than the download. Right now I am connecting through my laptop with a crossover cable, so my internet connection is just fine in my apartment. Relevant output from lsusb is here: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 050d:2103 Belkin Components F7D2102 802.11n N300 Micro Wireless Adapter v3000 [Realtek RTL8192CU] (bonus question: is that [050d:2103] the actual physical address straight from the hardware? Or does it change when I put different drivers on it? I am concerned I do not have the right driver)

• In a browser, is it best to use one huge spritesheet or many (10000) different PNG's?

  I'm creating a game in jQuery, where I use about 10000 32x32 tiles. Until now, I have been using them all separately (no sprite sheet). An average map uses about 2000 tiles (sometimes re-used PNG's but all separate divs) and the performance ranges from stable (Chrome) to a bit laggy (Firefox). Each of these divs are positioned absolutely using CSS. They do not need to be updated every tick, just when a new map is loaded. Would it be better for performance to use spritesheet methods for the divs using CSS background-positioning, like gameQuery does? Thank you in advance!
