ubuntu 12.04 install black screen

When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 i get the grub 1.99 screen that allows me to select ubuntu install, or try ubuntu with out installing. When i select install ubuntu the screen goes black and i can tell the hard drive is running, but there are no on screen prompts. I looked into this problem and attempted to change a few variables by pressing "e" to edit the ubuntu install boot screen I then changed splash to nospash, quiet to noquiet, and add nomodeset at the end of the line that starts with linux before the "--". This still changes nothing when i press F10 to boot. I have tried removing quiet and splash altogether and adding nomodeset, but still to no avail. I am a little frustrated and don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Ubuntu boots to totally blank after I installed some graphic card updates

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, dual boot with win7 on ThinkPad T400, I followed Ubuntu update hints and installed some update for my ATI Radeon graphic card, but when I boot to Ubuntu(means I can still load GRUB), the tragedy happened, the screen goes to blank and no matter what key stroke, I can not get any responds, I try to go to text terminal, but impossible! However when I hit the power button, the computer would pop out the Ubuntu shutdown screen briefly and shut down. I figure out I should delete the updates package of my graphic card, but I don't even get a chance to go to text terminal, please help me!

HP Pavilion dm4 with configuration as shown below cpu intel Core i5 2.26 GHz RAM 4.0 GB Graphics processor 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5450 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA]. I installed ubuntu 10.04 ( without AMD graphics driver) it was working fine, but when I installed AMD graphics drivers AMD Catalyst™ 12.8 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, than the problem started from then When I boot I was get black screen. Than I thought to upgrade from ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 using the bootable pen drive but was getting black screen than read on some forums that was because of the switchable graphics, than upgraded ubuntu 12.04 by setting to "nomodeset". It was working, again thought to install graphics driver AMD Catalyst™ 12.8 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, again after installing this, when I boot I am getting blank scree . Can anyone help me to inatall ubuntu 12.04 along with AMD Catalyst™ 12.8 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver. Any help is highly appreciated.

Plymouth did not install properly

I was installing the plymouth manager in hopes of making a custom loading screen. While the terminal was working, my computer unexpectedly powered off. I can open up the manager and it appears to do what it is supposed to (minus the fact that I can't make my own theme) and the screen only shows on powering down. Anyway, all of the advice I have seen so far have resulted in errors and nothing getting fixed. I do not have permissions to simply select the folder and delete it for some reason and I have not been able to find out how to grant myself those permissions. I guess my question then is how do I get rid of the plymouth manager so I can reinstall it properly? Can't use my keyboard nor the touch pad while installing on a Dell Vostro 1510

I am stuck with a very annoying problem which does not allow me to even install Ubuntu on my laptop (Dell Vostro 1510). In a simple walk through of the problematic scenario... I boot the Ubuntu from a boot able CD. I got to a point where it ask for the language options, I select the English as my option using arrows keys and press enter. Then the option come where a.) try from the live cd b.) install ubuntu c.) etc etc Is needed to be selected. For which I press enter. Once I press enter... In any of the next steps of installing Ubuntu, my keypad and touch pad does not work. P.S.: My Batteries are completely dried Up... Can't use batteries. Does this problem has anything to do with batteries?

FGLRX installation without main monitor

This is a spiritual follow up to this I am doing some modern OpenGL tutorials and I have found that MESA does not support openGL 3.0+, so I need to get back to FGLRX even if its given me grief in the past. Every time I have tried to install FGLRX drivers I generally get thrown to the terminal and have to do some recovery, etc. before I can get them to work. Problem is, now that my main monitor is borked, when I install FGLRX drivers I cannot boot to terminal. Question: How do I back up my current windowing so that when I (inevitably) lost my boot due to FGLRX installation, I can recover it with a livecd without reinstalling, and how can I install it without a main monitor?

What resources will help me understand the data model for QC 10.0 in order to write my SQL queries?

I am a fresher in Quality Center 10.0 HP software testing tool. As per my understanding in order to generate reports from QC and to troubleshoot the scenarios, we need to write SQL queries in the QC back end database. In my case it is SQL db. I downloaded the database reference help file but I could not understand from where I can start. It just gave the table name and its information. For a starter like me are there any online tutorials or helpful websites,hands on exercises,scenario's where I can better understand how to write queries for the QC data model? I am very confident about the SQL coding itself, what I want to know is how to query on the QC database tables based on the scenarios that occur in QC tool. Please suggest. Thanks, Srihari

No signal to monitor after driver install

After installing 10.10 I used Hardware Drivers (Jockey) to install the graphics driver v11.2 for my ATI HD 5770. After restarting to activate the driver all went well and the boot screen showed up but not like the normal one the text was rough on the edges and after the boot finished the screen turned black and no signal. I have found some forum discussions about that issue but no fix worked for me. I use a DVI to VGA adapter and I have a View Sonic E70F CRT monitor. PC specs CPU: Intel Q8300 2.5/4 GPU: ATI Powercolor HD5770 1GB MB: Gigabyte EP43-UD3L RAM: 4GB 1066 Kingston

Command works partially when run from startup applications

I have this script (or rather a set of commands which has permission to execute) to enable two finger scrolling and two finger tap = right click The script is located in /home/gaurav/Multigesture/multigesture. When I run the following command in terminal, two finger scrolling and two finger tap = right click start working. I have to run this command each time I boot my laptop. "/home/gaurav/Multigesture/multigesture" So I put this command in the startup applications so that I dont have to run the command each time I boot but when I reboot two finger scrolling is not working, only two finger tap = right click works. What could be the problem, If the command works fine from the terminal then how come it is working partially when i put it into startup applications. Unable to get screen signal after purge FGLRX

I thought that my ATI driver was not running well so I wanted to re-instal it completely. I did: sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon and after a boot I wanted to intal the ATI driver BUT at the boot no more signal to my screen. Since, every time I turn on my PC it gets to purple screen and then screen shuts down ! Note that: Even if the screen is off, PC seems to be running almost well: I m still able to use my network to access data shared with NFS. Using live USB I have no screen problem. I tried to plug my screen on an alternative output but it did not work. I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 while being on purple screen but it does not do anything, screen shut down anyway. I m going to try the SHIFT thing and learn from blackscreen wiki...

Have I fixed my partition problem with os x 10.5.8? Are my GPT and MBR back to normal?

I'm new to linux and I have overstepped by abilities. I tried dual booting os x 10.5.8 with ubuntu 11.10 with rEFIt, but I been having problems with partitioning. Instead of enduring more headaches, I've made the decision to simply use ubuntu on VirtualBox. I've tried to return my HDD to normal, but I am looking for confirmation that my partitions are ok. Build a custom Ubuntu based distribution

I am working on making a custom Ubuntu 11.10 based distro.(64 bit) I am adding non open source packages, replacing packages, changed user interface from Unity to GNOME, and more changes. My system is ready, and I want to create a redistributable image for my distro. When you go to system settings - system info, you see a logo with the Ubuntu name and logo, but I want to change it to the name and logo of my distro. Also, in the boot menu, I want to change the boot entry names, and the GRUB background. And I want to change the name Ubuntu from every possible location. Also, I will be sharing it with people, so I want to make my own software repositories, like linux mint has, or any other distro has, I will purchase server space for that. Also, the I want to customize the wubi installer like linux mint did and if some uses the customized tool to install my distro from Windows, they should see the name of my distro in add or remove programs page. Any help will be appreciated!

Installing on a Lenovo S10-3

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition on my Lenovo S10-3. According to the release notes, there is a bug in the kernel that forces me to add intel_idle.max_cstate=0 to the kernel parameters. I did this when booting the install CD and I was able to install Ubuntu. During the installation I chose to fetch updates from the net. Now when I try to boot the machine it just hangs. I have tried booting the machine as-is and I have tried adding the above-mentioned kernel parameters. Same experience. So, my questions is how do I install 10.10 in this machine and how do I boot it after I've installed the OS?

The importance of Unit Testing in BI

One of the main steps in the process we internally use to develop a BI solution is the implementation of Unit Test of you BI Data. As you may already know, I’ve create a simple (for now) tool that leverages NUnit to allow us to quickly create Unit Testing without having to resort to use Visual Studio Database Professional: http://queryunit.codeplex.com/ Once you have a tool like this one, you can start also to make sure that your BI solution (DWH and CUBE) is not only structurally sound (I mean, the cube or the report gets processed correctly), but you can also check that the logical integrity of your business rules is enforced. For example let’s say that the customer tell you that they will never create an invoice for a specific product-line in 2010 since that product-line is dismissed and will never be sold again. Ok we know that this in theory is true, but a lot of this business rule effectiveness depends on the fact the people does not do a mistake while inserting new orders/invoices and the ERP used implements a check for this business logic. Unfortunately these last two hypotesis are not always true, so you may find yourself really having some invoices for a product line that doesn’t exists anymore. Maybe this kind of situation in future will be solved using Master Data Management but, meanwhile, how you can give and idea of the data quality to your customers? How can you check that logical integrity of the analytical data you produce is exactly what you expect? Well, Unit Testing of a DWH or a CUBE can be a solution. Once you have defined your test suite, by writing SQL and MDX queries that checks that your data is what you expect to be, if you use NUnit (and QueryUnit does), you can then use a tool like NUnit2Report to create a nice HTML report that can be shipped via email to give information of data quality: In addition to that, since NUnit produces an XML file as a result, you can also import it into a SQL Server Database and then monitor the quality of data over time. How to learn to draw UML sequence diagrams

How can I learn to draw UML sequence diagrams. Even though I don't use UML much I find that type of diagrams to be quite expressive and want to learn how to draw them. I don't plan to use them to visualise a large chunks of code, hence I would like to avoid using tools, and learn how to draw them with just pen and paper. Muscle memory is good. I guess I would need to learn some basics of notation first, and then just practice it like in "take the piece of code, draw a seq. diagram visualising the code, then generate the diagram using some tool/website, then compare what I'd drawn to what the tool result. Find the differences, correct them, repeat.". Where do I start? Can you recommend a book or a web site or something else?

I wanted to use two Oracle SPARC T5-4 servers to simultaneously host both Oracle RAC and a WebLogic Server Cluster. I chose to use Oracle VM Server for SPARC to create a cluster like this: There are plenty of trade offs and decisions that need to be made, for example: Rather than configuring the system by hand, you might want to use an Oracle SuperCluster T5-8 My configuration is similar to jsavit's: Availability Best Practices - Example configuring a T5-8 but I chose to ignore some of the advice. Adopting Technologies for the Sake of Technologies

Unlike other engineering industries, the software engineering industry is really lacking maturity. The lack of maturity can see in different aspects of entire software development life cycle. I think other engineering industries are well organised and structured with common, proven engineering practices. The software engineering industry is greatly a diverse industry with different operating systems, and variety of development platforms, programming languages, frameworks and tools. Now these days, people are going behind the hypes and intellectual thoughts without understanding their core business problems and adopting technologies and practices for the sake of technologies and practices and simply becoming a “poster child” of technologies and practices. Understanding the core business problem and providing best, solid solution with a platform neutral approach, will give you more business values and ROI, instead of blindly adopting technologies and tailor-made your applications for the sake of technologies and practices. People have been simply migrating their solutions in favour of new technologies and different versions of frameworks without any business need. The “Pepsi Challenge” in the Software Development Pepsi Challenge marketing campaign of the 1980s was a popular and very interesting marketing promotion in which people taste one cup of Pepsi and another cup with Coca Cola. In the taste test, more than 50% of people were preferred Pepsi over Coca Cola. The success story behind the Pepsi was more sweetness contains in the Pepsi cola. They have simply added more sugar and more people preferred more sweet flavour. You can’t simply identify the better one after sipping one cup of cola based on the sweetness which contains. These things have been happening in the software industry for choosing development frameworks and technologies. People have been simply choosing frameworks based on the initial sugary feeling without understanding its core strengths and weakness. The sugary framework might be more harmful when you develop real-world systems. There is not any silver bullet for solving all kind of problems and frameworks and tools do have strengths and weakness. So it would be better to understand their strength and weakness. And please keep in mind that you have to develop real apps to understand the real capabilities and weakness of a framework. Evaluating a technology based on few blog posts will harm your projects and these bloggers might be lacking real-world experience with the framework. The Problem with Align a Development Practice with Tools Recently I have observed a discussion in a group where one guy asked suggestions for practicing Continuous Delivery (CD) as part of the agile based application engineering. Then the discussion quickly went to using and choosing a Continuous Integration (CI) tool and different people suggested different Continuous Integration (CI) tools for simply practicing Continuous Delivery. If you have worked with core agile engineering practices, you could clearly know that the real essence of agile is neither choosing a tool nor choosing a process. By simply choosing CI tool from a particular vendor will not ensure that you are delivering an evolving software based on customer feedback. You have to understand the real essence of a engineering practice and choose a right tool for practicing it instead of simply focus on a particular tool for a practicing an development practice. If you want to adopt a practice, you need a solid understanding on it with its real essence where tools are just helping us for better automation. Adopting New Technologies for the Sake of Technologies The another problem is that developers have been a tendency to adopt new technologies and simply migrating their existing apps to new technologies. It is okay if your existing system is having problem with a technology stack or or maintainability challenge with existing solution, and moving to new technology for solving the current problems. We have been adopting new technologies for solving new challenges like solving the scalability challenges when the application or user bases is growing unpredictably. Please keep in mind that all new technologies will become old after working with it for few years. The below Facebook status update of Janakiraman, expresses the attitude of a typical customer. For an example, Node.js is becoming a hottest buzzword in the software industry and many developers are trying to adopt Node.js for their apps. The important thing is that Node.js is a minimalist framework that does some great things for some problems, but it’s not a silver bullet. I have been also working with Node.js which is good for some problems, but really bad for choosing it for all kind of problems. By adopting new technologies for new projects is good if we could get real business values from it because newer framework would solve some existing well known problems and provide better solutions where it can incorporate good solutions for the latest challenges . But adopting a new technology for the sake of new technology is really bad idea. Another example is JavaScript is getting lot of attention so that lot of developers are developing heavy JavaScript centric web apps. First, they will adopt a client-side JavaScript MV* framework from AngularJS, Ember, Backbone etc, and develop a Single Page App(SPA) where they are repeating the mistakes we did in the past with server-side. The mistakes we did in the server-side is transforming to client-side. The problem is that people are just adopting new technologies, but not improving their solutions. I predict that many Single Page App will suck in the future. We need a hybrid approach where we should be able to leverage both server-side and client-side for developing next-generation web apps. The another problem is that if you like a particular framework, use it for all kind of apps. In the past, I know some Silverlight passionate guys were tried to use that framework for all kind of apps including larger line of business apps. And these days developers are migrating their existing Silverlight apps in favour of HTML5 buzzword. So the real question is, what is the business values we are getting from these apps when we are developing it for the sake of a particular technology instead of business need. The another problem is that our solutions consultants are trying to provide unnecessary solutions for the sake of a particular technology or for a hype. For an example, Big Data solutions are great for solving the problem of three Vs : volume, velocity and variety. But trying to put this for every application will make problems. Let’s say, there is a small web site running with limited budget and saying that we need a recommendation engine for the web site with a Hadoop based solution with a 16 node cluster, would be really horrible. If we really need a Hadoop based solution, got for it, but trying to put this for all application would be a big disaster. It would be great if could understand the core business problems first, and later choose a right framework for providing solutions for the actual business problem, instead of trying to provide so many solutions. The Problem with Tied Up to a Platform Vendor Some organizations and teams are tied up with a particular platform vendor where they don’t want to use any product other than their preferred or existing platform vendor. They will accept any product provided by the vendor regardless of its capability. This will lets you some benefits regards with integration and collaboration of different products provided by the same vendor, but it will loose your opportunity to provide better solution for your business problems. For a real world sample scenario, lot of companies have been using SAP for their ERP solutions. When they are thinking about mobility or thinking about developing hybrid mobile apps, they can easily find out a framework from SAP. SAP provides a framework for HTML 5 based UI development named SAPUI5. If you are simply adopting that framework only based for the preference of existing platform vendor, you might be loose different opportunities for providing better solution. Initially you might enjoy the sugary feeling provided by the platform vendor, but you have to think about developing apps which should be capable for solving future challenges. I am not saying that any framework is not good and I believe that all frameworks are good over another one for solving at least one problem. My point is that we should not tied up with any specific platform vendor unless your organization is having resource availability problems. Being Polyglot for Providing Right Solutions The modern software engineering industry is greatly diverse with different tools and platforms. Lot of open source frameworks and new programming languages have been releasing to the developer community, where choosing the right platform without any biased opinion, is really a difficult task. But it would really great if we could develop an attitude with platform neutral mindset and being a polyglot developer for providing better solutions based on the actual business problems. IMHO, we should learn a new programming language and a new framework every year. This will improve the quality of our developer capabilities and also improve the quality of our primary programming language skills. Being polyglot for individual developers and organizational teams will give you greater opportunity to your developer experience and also for your applications. Organizations can analyse their business problem without tied with any technology and later they can provide solutions by choosing different platform and tools. Summary In this blog post, what I was trying to say that we should not tied up or biased with any development platform, technology, vendor or programming language and we should not adopt technologies and practices for the sake of technologies. If we are adopting a technology or a practice for the sake of it, we are simply becoming a “poster child” of the technology and practice. We should not become a poster child of other people’s intellectual thoughts and theories, instead of it we should become solutions developers and solutions consultants where we should be able to provide better solutions for the business problems. Being a polyglot developer is a good idea for improving your developer skills which lets you provide better solutions for the business problems. The most important thing is that we should become platform neutral developers where our passion should be for providing brilliant solutions. No Internet On 12.04.1

I have no internet on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so i'm on a desktop so I got to install a .exe program to run my wireless card for my desktop so I got internet access, But I can't seem to download wine or its source files. If I do I put on my usb and boot into Ubuntu but then when I try to open it I get the programs source files etc. Anyone who could help me Please do :| ( I can't install wine from software center since I have no connection online). Note : I can download my stuff on windows 8 boot so I can transfer files to my usb to run on Ubuntu.

WIX 3.5 Unexpected Child Element iis:Certificate

Came across this today when I switched from WIX 3.0 and VS 2008 to WIX 3.5 and VS 2010. The solution ended up being pretty simple. Just need to update the Wix Project Properties to provide an additional parameter to the compiler and linker. These can be found at Wix Installer Project Properties > Tool Settings > Additional Parameters Compiler and Wix Installer Project Properties > Tool Settings > Additional Parameters Linker.
