• Loud and annoying noise on login

  I have a PC with Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit on it. The problem is that whenever I log in (automatic log in is enabled), there is a loud double-click noise that sounds from the speakers whether the volume is muted or not. I have two sound cards; the motherboard audio, which is disabled in the BIOS, and the Creative! Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi SB0460, which I have normal speakers plugged into. Does anyone know how to fix this? Relative lspci lines: 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] BeaverCreek HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6500D and 6400G-6600G series] 02:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB X-Fi Using default Phonon backend. • Convert VARCHAR() columns to NVARCHAR()

  We recently underwent an upgrade that required us to change our database columns from varchar to NVarchar, to support unicode characters.   Now that Flash is largely being replaced with HTML5 elements (video, audio, canvas, etc.) are there any good examples of web-based games built on completely open standards (meaning Javascript, HTML and CSS)? I see a lot of examples of pure HTML5 implementations of what was once only in Flash (like stuff here: http://www.html5rocks.com/) but not many games, a domain which still seem dominated by Flash. I'm curious what's possible and what the limitations are.

• Why does switching users completely hang my system every time?

  I have a fresh install of 11.04 64bit, with 2 administrator accounts and 4 normal accounts. The 4 normal accounts (the kids' accounts) don't have passwords, they can login simply by clicking on their names. When any of the users -- either admin or normal -- tries to switch to another account by clicking in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting another user, the screen goes black and the entire system locks up. Even CTRL+ALT+F1 through F7 does nothing. This is reproducible 100% of the time on this system. I can ssh into the box when the console locks up, and by running top, I see that Xorg is consuming about 100% of the CPU. • My Feelings About Microsoft Surface

  Advice: read the title carefully, I’m talking about “feelings” and not about advanced technical points proved in a scientific and objective way I still haven’t had a chance to play with a MS Surface tablet (I would love to, of course) and so my ideas just came from reading different articles on the net and MS official statements. Remember also that the MVP motto begins with “Independent” (“Independent Experts. Real World Answers.”) and this is just my humble opinion about a product and a technology. I know that, being an MS MVP you can be called an “MS-fanboy”, I don’t care, I hope that people can appreciate my opinion, even if it doesn’t match theirs. The “Surface” brand can be confusing for techies that knew the “original” surface concept but I think that will be a fresh new brand name for most of the people out there. But marketing department are here to confuse people… so I can understand this “recycle” of an existing name. So Microsoft is entering the hardware arena… for me this is good news. Microsoft developed some nice hardware in the past: the xbox, zune (even if the commercial success was quite limited) and, last but not least, the two arc mices (old and new model) that I use and appreciate. In the past Microsoft worked with OEMs and that model lead to good and bad things. Good thing (for microsoft, at least) is market domination by windows-based PCs that only in the last years has been reduced by the return of the Mac and tablets. Google is also moving in the hardware business with its acquisition of Motorola, and Apple leveraged his control of both the hardware and software sides to develop innovative products. Microsoft can scare OEMs and make them fly away from windows (but where?) or just lead the pack, showing how devices should be designed to compete in the market and bring back some of the innovation that disappeared from recent PC products (look at the shelves of your favorite electronics store and try to distinguish a laptop between the huge mass of anonymous PCs on displays… only Macs shine out there…). Having to compete with MS “official” hardware will force OEMs to develop better product and bring back some real competition in a market that was ruled only by prices (the lower the better even when that means low quality) and no innovative features at all (when it was the last time that a new PC surprised you?). Moving into a new market is a big and risky move, but with Windows 8 Microsoft is playing a crucial move for its future, trying to be back in the innovation run against apple and google. MS can’t afford to fail this time. I saw the new devices (the WinRT and Pro) and the specifications are scarce, misleading and confusing. The first impression is that the device looks like an iPad with a nice keyboard cover… Using “HD” and “full HD” to define display resolution instead of using the real figures and reviving the “ClearType” brand (now dead on Win8 as reported here and missed by people who hate to read text on displays, like myself) without providing clear figures (couldn’t you count those damned pixels?) seems to imply that MS was caught by surprise by apple recent “retina” displays that brought very high definition screens on tablets.Also there are no specifications about the processors used (even if some sources report NVidia Tegra for the ARM tablet and i5 for the x86 one) and expected battery life (a critical point for tablets and the point that killed Windows7 x86 based tablets). Also nothing about the price, and this will be another critical point because other platform out there already provide lots of applications and have a good user base, if MS want to enter this market tablets pricing must be competitive. There are some expansion ports (SD and USB), so no fixed storage model (even if the specs talks about 32-64GB for RT and 128-256GB for pro). I like this and don’t like the apple model where flash memory (that it’s dirt cheap used in thumdrives or SD cards) is as expensive as gold (or cocaine to have a more accurate per gram measurement) when mounted inside a tablet/phone. For big files you’ll be able to use external media and an SD card could be used to store files that don’t require super-fast SSD-like access times, I hope. To be honest I really don’t like the marketplace model and the limitation of Windows RT APIs (no local database? from a company that based a good share of its success on VB6+Access!) and lack of desktop support on the ARM (even if the support is here and has been used to port office). It’s a step toward the consumer market (where competitors are making big money), but may impact enterprise (and embedded) users that may not appreciate Windows 8 new UI or the limitations of the new app model (if you aren’t connected you are dead ). Not having compatibility with the desktop will require brand new applications and honestly made all the CPU cycles spent to convert .NET IL into real machine code in the past like a huge waste of time… as soon as a new processor architecture is supported by Windows you still have to rewrite part of your application (and MS is pushing HTML5+JS and native code more than .NET in my perception). On the other side I believe that the development experience provided by Visual Studio is still miles (or kilometres) ahead of the competition and even the all-uppercase menu of VS2012 hasn’t changed this situation. The new metro UI got mixed reviews. On my side I should say that is very pleasant to use on a touch screen, I like the minimalist design (even if sometimes is too minimal and hides stuff that, in my opinion, should be visible) but I should also say that using it with mouse and keyboard is like trying to pick your nose with boxing gloves… Metro is also very interesting for embedded devices where touch screen usage is quite common and where having an application taking all the screen is the norm. For devices like kiosks, vending machines etc. this kind of UI can be a great selling point. I don’t need a new tablet (to be honest I’m pretty happy with my wife’s iPad and with my PC), but I may change my opinion after having a chance to play a little bit with those new devices and understand what’s hidden under all this mysterious and generic announcements and specifications!

  How can I add watermark to my MP4 (compatible with Flash player and HTML5 player)? ffmpeg -y -i video.mp4 -acodec copy -b 400k -vf "movie=logo.png [watermark]; [in][watermark] overlay=main_w/2-overlay_w/2:main_h/2-overlay_h/2 [out]" /var/www/videos/out.mp4 The above command works fine in VLC, Windows Media Player, but the HTML5 player can't play out.mp4, Flash player plays only sound. ffmpeg was installed with this command: sudo apt-get install ffmpeg. What am I doing wrong?

• Split screen and other issues on Ubuntu 11.10 with ATI graphics card

  Ever since updating my Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 I experience issues with graphics. The biggest is the "split screen" effect where my desktop is shifted to the right, resulting in having Unity bar in the middle of the screen. As shown here: http://i.imgur.com/I8nmZ.jpg This changes from boot to boot, sometimes it's on the left, sometimes in the middle. What I tried: Removing fglrx drivers completely Installing post-update version of them, but installation is broken ATM in the Ubuntu, so no go. No one is even trying to fix it (bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-common/+bug/873058 and a couple of duplicates out there) Also using the open source "radeon" driver results in the same (I have a better successful boot ratio with this one, proprietary rarely lets me boot) Other artifacts are: serious screen tearing weird lines flickering in random places lagginess Did anyone experience that? My specs: Ubuntu 11.10 AMD Radeon HD 6950 1GB

• ATI RS690m X1200 proprietary driver installation

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my emachine e625 AMD64 (TF-20) with an ATI RS690m X1200 graphics card but I didn't have 3D acceleration. The open-source driver works, except for any video effects or acceleration… I've downloaded the driver from ATI and followed the installation instructions and here is the result: Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version default:v2:x86_64:lib32::none:3.0.0-17-generic; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro What did I do wrong?

• What to do with my "unmounted drive"?

  I just recently followed the tutorials on http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download for installing the ubuntu server onto my 1TB Seagate External. I was planning on using this to install it on my macbook and in these instructions it states to preform this line of code Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2) Now my HD prompts "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". • How can I get back my deskopt? the left and top panels

  I installed the Ubuntu 12.10 and the driver for ATI Radeon HD 4330 (AMD Catalyst™ 12.6 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver) and the latest updates. After the restart now I can see only the deskopt backgrund and nothing more. No left or top panels. The resolution changed to 1024X768 and the graphic changed to: VESA:M92. What happened? Is there something wrong with the driver? How can I solve this? I'am a beginner, please answer according to this. Thank you!

• Screen resolution higher than monitor specs

  Is there any magical or non-magical way to increase screen resolution for my monitor that officially does 1366 x 768? With my graphics card, I could do 1920, and when I actually do that, the image is very "unclean" on the screen... I run Ubuntu 10.10, on an HP Pavilion with a GeForce 315. My monitor is a HD ready Samsung LE32C450... my smaller previous monitor had no problem showing a 1920 resolution, and my obvious mishap was to assume a much bigger screen would support at least this same resolution... Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Burned DVD and installed which shown kernel 3.2.0-23 to begin with. Got 5.1 surround sound working. Got ATI ( Now its AMD ) video drivers installed for my Radeon HD R6870 Video card from AMD's website. fglrxinfo came up and reported as normal. THE PROBLEM Kernel 3.2.0.x kept locking up so I tried higher kernel versions. But ATI / AMD Drivers do not install on any kernel Above 3.2.0.x WHAT I HAVE TRIED I have gone over this tutorial many times ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI ) and it doesn't work on ANY kernel except 3.2.0.x. The problems I am having here are that the ATI / AMD drivers working for the 12.04 Precise with kernel 3.2.0-23 and 24, But the computer kept locking up. Although all my games would work, the lock ups were random and were constant. So I looked all over the web for 3 days trying to find an answer and the lock up issue was said to just update the kernel. So I did. Have tried many kernels. All of them .. no lock ups. BUT the Restricted AMD drivers from the AMD website will not install. And none of the OpenSource AMD drivers have EVER installed no matter what Kernel or version I tried.
