  Coming from Windows, so that is what my expectations are based on. I have a Ubuntu desktop edition instance running as a virtual machine on a server. I would like to use it as my primary open source dev environment but the VNC tools I have used don't seem to be as rich as "Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows. The two things that are missing for me: connecting/logging into a non-console user sessions dynamically resizing the graphical resolution based on the size of the remote desktop window device sharing (USB devices plugged into client shared with remote) Is there an appropriate client that I can run on Windows to connect to my ubuntu dev instance that provides these capabilities?

  OTN's new tech article is "Experimenting with Java Timers" by T. Lamine Ba. This article studies time—how Java handles timers and the scheduling of tasks. Java timers are utilities that let you execute threads or tasks at a predetermined future time, and these tasks can be repeated according to a set frequency. The article starts with a simple "Hello World" program in a web application that's composed of JavaServer Pages (JSP) and uses the model-control-view (MVC) design pattern. The IDE used in this article is NetBeans IDE 7.1, but you can use any IDE that supports Java. "Experimenting with Java Timers" demonstrates how to get started scheduling jobs with Java. • Defaulting internet requests to wlan0 when also connected to eth0

  I am trying to configure an Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition as a server. I currently have the DHCP server working through eth0. My problem is that I only have one Ethernet port, and am receiving Internet though a mobile hotspot on my phone through wlan0, and whenever I attempt to connect through wlan0 and eth0 I am unable to access the Internet through the server or the clients. When I disconnect from eth0 I then regain access. I have searched extensively for a solution, and have come up short. Any help is appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Server monitor goes into sleep mode (no display) after fresh install

  For some reason I can boot and either use Ubuntu 12.04 server edition, or desktop version. I can live boot the disk, I can go through the installer, or even use the ubuntu alternate installer. But for some reason after the install completes and I reboot the monitor seems to go back into sleep mode and then never loads the command prompt. This is on an industrial adlink MXE-1300 PC. I've installed ubuntu server fine on other models of adlink machines but this one doesn't want to seem to play nice. To me it seems like if it was a video card issue than I could never even load the installer or run ubuntu in live mode. Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

But it's pretty slow, and I want to know if there is a better way to do it.I use c++ with visual studio 2008 express edition.   I need to develop a programm that is going to read some information from a special USB device and access information via Web Socket (socket.io preferred). My client wants to deploy this app on Mac OS X, Windows, Android and iOS. I was looking for development softwares valid for both: Desktop and Mobile, but it is still not clear for me and that´s what I found. Unity - Looks very good but to create a native plugin for reading from the device it lloks like I need the PRO edition. Adobe Air - Looks good but I´m not sure if I can write Native Plugins for all wanted platforms. LiveCode - Still inmature (lots of bugs) and I don´t know if it is possible to write native plugins for my device. Is there any other good platform for my case? What´s your option?

• Ubuntu 14.04 not booting before Windows 8.1

  I try too boot my computer into Ubuntu, but I end up having to manually select Ubuntu from the devices menu, even though it was supposed to boot first. Instead Windows 8 boots up like Ubuntu isn't even there! And GRUB works just fine when Ubuntu is selected in the boot device menu. (How else am I on?) I tried using EasyBCD but kept getting errors from the windows boot manager. And just in case it helps, during installation of Ubuntu it didn't recognize windows 8, and I had to resize and install manually. Anything I can do? Notes: EVERYONE!!! GRUB WORKS PERFECTLY!!! IT IS AN ERROR IN THE HP BOOT MENU AS I HAVE PREVIOUSLY SAID!!! PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME ANSWERS FOR GRUB EDITS IN THE FUTURE!!!   These days I am swimming in Windows 8 code, and I must say it is a good feeling. This gives me the occasion to push MVVM Light and a few other components of mine to their limits, and to fix or improve a few things on the fly. All this goodness will be available in V4.1 which is scheduled shortly after Windows 8 launch. In spite of the busy schedule, I couldn’t resist writing an article for MSDN magazine about, you guessed it, the MVVM pattern and MVVM Light in Windows 8. It is an article that goes quite in depth in some of the concepts, and provides an app demonstrating how to use them. • What is the difference from the push and pull development models?

  I was reading Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition and in the chapter 11 "The Theory of Constraints" the authors talk about the old and obsolete "push" development model and the XP way, the "pull" development model. It looks like a quite important concept, but it takes only a very small paragraph and two images that are mere illustrations of the "waterfall" and iterative process, nothing specific about these models except by the image caption. I searched and it doesn't go any further about it in the rest of the book. I couldn't find any further explanations or discussions about it in the Internet either. If the only difference about those is that one is "waterfall" and the other is iterative, them why push and why pull? Does anyone understand what is really the difference between those two and give some good examples?
