  i start learning jquery few days ago, and i like it very much. but now i have a problem, that can't solve alone. i have two selects <select id="select1"> <option value="1">1day</option> <option value="2">2day</option> <option value="3">3day</option> </select> <select id="select2"> <option value="1">1day</option> <option value="2">2day</option> <option value="3">3day</option> </select> i need to set #select2 the same value with #select1, when #select1 changes i've red some questions about select tag here, but i need to set "selected" attribute to that option, which have the same value. how can i do it?   i'm still learning Haskell and need help with the type inference please! using packages SDL and Yampa i get the following type signature from FRP.Yampa.reactimate: (Bool -> IO (DTime, Maybe a)) and i want to use it for: myInput :: Bool -> IO (DTime, Maybe [SDL.Event]) myInput isBlocking = do event <- SDL.pollEvent return (1, Just [event]) ... reactimate myInit myInput myOutput mySF but it says Couldn't match expected type `()' against inferred type `[SDL.Event]' Expected type: IO (DTime, Maybe ()) Inferred type: IO (DTime, Maybe [SDL.Event]) In the second argument of `reactimate', namely `input' In the expression: reactimate initialize input output process i thought "Maybe a" allows me to use anything, even a SDL.Event list? why is it expecting "Maybe ()" when the type signature is actually "Maybe a"? why does it want an empty tuple, or a function taking no arguments, or what is () supposed to be?

• html links & hover events over certain locations on an image.

  So i created a web site a long time ago using a designer alot like frontpage + expression design put together, and since then Ive gotten more into coding, and I'm learning html, CSS, and all that good stuff.. and i have this re-designed header that Ive made here: http://prntscr.com/8zct So what I need to know, is how i can get it so that when a user clicks on one of the links in the header design it will redirect to a page. and also if possible, how to make it so when a user hovers over a link a drop down may appear with other options. As me being quite new to this sort of stuff, could anybody help me achieve this? PS. I'm working in Visual Studio with ASP. but that doesn't change anything about the html and css stuff. just letting you guys know.

• How to make a service not receive messages at certain times

  I'm currently learning wcf for an up and coming project. The service I am creating is using MSMQ to update the database, but the database can't accept messages at certain times. The service is going to be a windows service. The one thing I am coming up against at the moment is how I can get the service to stop reading messages from the queue at these times, for instance lets say I don't want to read messages from the queue on sundays. How would I go about implementing this. So that the client can send messages to the queue that update the database but the service doesn't read the messages until monday, so that the database gets all the updates on the monday? I have started looking at creating a customhost, but I'm not sure if I'm heading in the right direction with this. Thanks in advance.

• Load a CSV file into a DataGrid

  I'm having a go at moving one of our simpler apps to Silverlight (a bit of a learning exercise). I've quickly come unstuck as I can't figure out how to load (or bind maybe?) a csv file to a datagrid (i.e. so you can point the app at a local csv file and display it to the user). I do have boilerplate code to parse a csv file and return a datatable but I'm shocked to discover that Silverlight doesn't even support DataTable (wtf!). Any ideas at all how to do this? How do people bind data to a datagrid anyhow? I'm using Silverlight 3.0 included in VS2010.

• Rails controller processing as HTML instead of XML

  I've recently upgraded from Ruby 1.8.6 and Rails 2.3.4 to Ruby 1.9 and Rails 3.0.3. I have the following controller: class ChartController < ApplicationController before_filter :login_required respond_to :html, :xml def load_progress chart.add( :series, "Memorized", y_memorized ) chart.add( :series, "Learning", y_learning ) chart.add( :series, "Mins / Day", y_time ) chart.add( :user_data, :secondary_y_interval, time_axis_interval ) respond_to do |fmt| fmt.xml { render :xml => chart.to_xml } end # Also tried # respond_with chart end end However, when I call the 'load_progress method' I get the following: Started GET "/load_progress.xml" for 127.0.0. Processing by ChartController#load_progress as HTML Completed 406 Not Acceptable in 251ms I have also tried changing the respond_to block to respond_with chart But I get the same response. I've read all the new Rails documentation on the new respond_with format but I can't seem to elicit an XML response. Am desperately hoping someone has some ideas.

  I have just started learning programming and I would like to make a script into a chrome extension. Its a basic script and I hope to practice more and more and develop bigger projects and set myself bigger tasks This script has to do the following : reload a page every 20 seconds (say google.com) after 6 months the script must not run (maybe prompt a window saying "its over 6 months") The code should be able to go into a small chrome extension and also the 6 month time period should be absolute not relative to the time the script was started; for example should the browser crash and i have to turn on the extension again it should not restart the 6 month counter. Also if anyone could recommend any good sources for JavaScript to learn (preferably books; nothingIi read online ever seems to stick)

• Why are regular expressions such a complicated, cryptic mess?

  Often when I see regular expressions, I only see a total mess of characters. Why does it have to be this way? I guess what I really want to know is: are there alternatives to regular expressions that basically do the same thing but are implemented in a human readable language? [UPDATE] Thanks for all the great responses and inspiration! I wanted to highlight this particular link which shows how a (working) alternative would look like, which may also be a good starting point for learning or "simple" regex expressions. But you also quickly get a feel for the verbosity tradeoff.

  Hi all, I know a little about profiling, but what I am particularlly insterest in, is what has all the memory when I get these heap over flow exceptions. I will start getting them after about a hour of debugging. I am hoping there is some sort of dump or something, that I can use to get a list of what instances are around at the time the program starts. By the way, sorry if this is a lazy question.   I am having the hardest time trying to figure out this (should be) simple css: Website is here: http://mibsoftware.us/fct/index.php I'm simply trying to get my #leftcolumn and #maincolumn to be inside the #content_container, yet whatever I'm doing isn't working at all. I'd like for the #content_container to be a dynamic height since the height of #leftcolumn and #maincolumn change depending on the page you are on. From the framework of my css it should work fine, so I must be missing something in my .css file declaring these divs. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this will be a great learning experience for me.

• Why does code need to be reloaded in Rails 3?

  I am a former PHP developer learning Rails and Sinatra. In PHP, every page request loaded all of the required files. If I changed some code and refreshed the page, I could be sure that the code was fresh. In Rails 3, Controller code is fresh on every request. However, if I modify any code in the /lib folder, I need to restart the server so the changes take effect. Why does this happen? Is it something to do with the way Ruby is designed? Is Rails doing some optimizations to avoid reloading code on every request? Thanks!

  I'm learning CRUD in codeigniter. I have table name "posting" and the coloumns are like this (id, title, post). I successed to create a new post (both insert into database and display in the view). But I have problem when I delete my post in the front-end. • Can I distort a bitmap image in Flash?

  Hi, what I would like to do is to take a loaded GIF file as a Bitmap, and then distort it by stretching and shrinking parts of it, so it would look like it got squished up against the screen. I'm pretty sure that there's no easy way in Flash to go beyond scaling and shearing, but I wonder if there might be some simple techniques to accomplish this kind of effect. By the way, I've also thought of pre-deforming the images in GIMP and saving them there, but I can't find a simple way to do it without learning their scripting language. Thanks for your help!

  What things, methods, workflows, etc. can you not live without today and wish you had learned of a long time ago? For example, learning some basic Ubuntu and using my debugger properly in the IDE have made a huge difference to me and are together probably the two things that I most wish I had done a long time ago. Using a debugger just seems like common sense now to many of us, but to those that are in a early stage of their career it might not. (I'm a good example of that.)

• How long people take to learn a new programming language?

  In general aspects, this might be a good reference for everyone. Having an idea of how long people take in average for properly learning how to code can give a very good idea on how dense or long is the path. Someone who never programmed should take weeks or months, even years maybe while someone who's already experienced in the area and know at least 2 different languages might take days, hours or even minutes to start coding. But other than being able to write code that runs, there are ways to write the same program, and it's much harder to get deep knowledge on that than actually being able to program. And sometimes languages differ a lot from one to another on that aspect as well. For instance, we should never have to worry with code-injection in JavaScript like we do in C. So, is there any place we can see some good numbers for how long it takes to learn a language, maybe divided into level of knowledge categories, languages and paradigms, etc?

  if i create a new web application tomorrow, should i use Drupal 6 or 7? i have never used drupal before so i have to start learning it first (very familiar with PHP) so i can understand the basics and how to extend it. my concerns for using 7: no modules contributed yet? so i dont have all the fancy stuff i can add like in Drupal 6? no good documentation and lack of web tutorials? how could i learn about it if there is not that much support? too early in the development process? it's not stable enough? i would like to use 7 cause i dont want to relearn everything and 7 is indeed just around the corner. but im afraid that it lacks all other stuff version 6 has. could someone guide me into right direction? thanks

• C++ hook process and show status

  Ok so I am learning C++ slowly. I am familiar with all the console syntax and everything, but now I'm moving on to windows programming. Now what im trying to do, is create a DLL that I inject into a process, so it's hooked in. All I want the C++ application to do, is have text in it, that says "Hooked" if it's successfully injected, and an error if something wrong happened. Or even if I can do it without a DLL, Just open an executable, and when the certain process I'm trying to hook is opened, the status is changed to "Hooked". Also I have a safaribooksonline.com account so if there is any good reads you would recommend, just write it down. thanks

• Perl, `push` to array reference

  Is it possible to push to an array reference in Perl? Googling has suggested I deference the array first, but this doesn't really work. It pushes to the deferenced array, not the referenced array. For example, my @a = (); my $a_ref = [@a]; push(@$a_ref,"hello"); print $a[0]; @a will not be updated and this code will fail because the array is still empty (I'm still learning Perl references, so this might be an incredibly simple question. Sorry if so)
