• Huwaei Modem working fine!

  yesterday I installed Ubuntu 12 in my sony vaio lappy. I have Huwaei E173 3G modem, simply inserted that modem into usb slot, after a few seconds modem started blinking finding as activated. I opened network profile and created a new network under 'Mobile broadband' tab everything was automated and I felt awesome, infact I used net for a while. Next morning, I placed modem into usb, nothing happened, no sign of modem presence even but modem is blinking, I tried creating a new connection once again but attained no luck. Kindly help me in resolving problem. regards sandy

• What tools should I consider if my strategy is to make a game available to as many platforms as possible?

  We're planning on developing a 2D, grid-based puzzle game, and although it's still very early in the planning stages, we'd like to make our decisions well from the beginning. Our strategy will be to make the game available to as many platforms as possible, for example PCs (Windows, Mac and/or Linux), mobile phones (iPhone and/or Android based phones), game consoles (XBLA and/or PSN) PC will have an emphasis, but I believe that's the most flexible platform so that shouldn't be a problem. So, what programming language, game engine, frameworks and all around tools would be best suited for our goal? P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

• Mts mblaze doesn't connect to internet

  I've sony vaio vpceb24en laptop, I'm using dual boot system with windows 7 and ubuntu. Firstly I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS then upgraded to 12.04 & 12.04.1 afterwards. I have mts mblaze dongle. I have set up the mts connection profile under the mobile broadband. My problem is : Sometimes my connection is easily made & I use it, sometime it never connects. So I have to restart my system then it connects to internet sometimes. But now it's not connecting even I restarted my system many times, just it shows trying to connect icon once, then never tries to connect. while in windows it's working fine. Please someone help me out how to resolve this problem as I'm very new to linux. Thanks, Chetan

• Ubuntu One synching changed files

  I have several folders in the Ubuntu1 folder and if I add a new file (on my PC oder my Mobile) the file shows up in the other device or in the online access. However, if I change one of the files (like a spreadsheet I change almost daily on my PC) Ubuntu1 is not updating the changed file. It is still the old file on the other devices. Doesn't Ubuntu1 sync changed files only new ones or do I have to change some settings? Could someone be so nice and help me? Thanks in advance! Mark PS: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.

• Not able to suspend or hibernate

  My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate, the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I searched a little on the internet, and installed 'acpi-support' according to some advice but it does not help. Any suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks and regards! • Drive Online Engagement with Intuitive Portals and Websites

  As more and more business is being conducted via online channels, engaging users and making them more productive and efficient though these online channels is becoming critical. These users could be customers, partners or employees and while the respective channels through which they interact might be different, these users do increasingly interact with your business through the Web, or mobile devices or now through various social mediums.  Businesses need a user engagement strategy and solution that allows them to deliver targeted and personalized content and applications to users through the various online mediums and touch points.  The customer experience today is made up of an ongoing set of interactions with organizations across many channels, online and offline.  The Direct channel (including sales reps, email and mail) is an important point of contact, as is the Contact Center.  Contact Centers rely on the phone as a means of interacting with customers, and also more now than ever, the Web as well.  However, the online organization is often managed separately from the Contact Center organization within a business. In-store is an important channel for retailers, offering Point-of-Service for human interactions, and Kiosks which enable self-service. Kiosks are a Web-enabled touch point but in-store kiosks are often managed by the head of retail operations, rather than the online organization.  And of course, the online channel, including customer interactions with an organization via digital means -- on the website, mobile websites, and social networking sites, has risen to paramount importance in recent years in the customer experience. Historically all of these channels have been managed separately. The result of all of this fragmentation is that the customer touch points with an organization are siloed.  Their interactions online are not known and respected in their dealings in-store.  Their calls to the contact center are not taken as input into what the website offers them when they arrive. Think of how many times you’ve fallen victim to this. Your experience with the company call center is different than the experience in-store. Your experience with the company website on your desktop computer is different than your experience on your iPad. I think you get the point. But the customer isn’t the only one we need to look at here, as employees and the IT organization have challenges as well when it comes to online engagement. There are many common tools and technologies that organizations have been using to try and engage users, whether it’s customers, employees or partners. Some have adopted different blog and wiki technologies (some hosted, some open source, sometimes embedded in platforms), to things like tagging, file sharing and content management, or composite applications for self-service applications and activity streams. Basically, there are so many different tools & technologies that each address different aspects of user engagement. Now, one of the challenges with this, is that if we look at each individual tool, typically just implementing for example a file sharing and basic collaboration solution, may meet the needs of the business user for one aspect of user engagement, but it may not be the best solution to engage with customers and partners, or it may not fit with IT standards such as integrating with their single sign on tools or their corporate website. Often, the scenario is that businesses are having to acquire multiple pieces and parts as well as build custom applications to meet their needs. Leaving customers and partners with a more fragmented way of interacting with the company. Every organization has some sort of enterprise balancing act between the needs of the business user and the needs and restrictions enforced by enterprise IT groups. As we’ve been discussing, we all know that the expectations for online engagement have changed since the days of the static, one-size fits all website. With these changes have come some very difficult organizational challenges as well. Today, as a business user, you want to engage with your customers, and your customers expect you to know who they are. They expect you to recall the details they’ve provided to you on your website, to your CSRs and to your sales people. They expect you to remember their purchases, their preferences and their problems. And they expect you to know who they are, equally well, across channels, including your web presence. This creates a host of challenges for today’s business users. Delivering targeted, relevant content online is now essential for converting prospects into customers and for engendering long term loyalty. Business users need the ability to leverage customer data from different sources to fuel their segmentation and targeting strategies and to easily set-up, manage and optimize online campaigns. Also critical, they need the ability to accomplish these things on-the-fly, at the speed of the marketplace, while making iterative improvements.  These changing expectations put a host of demands on the IT organization as well. The web presence must be able to scale to support the delivery of personalized and targeted content to thousands of site visitors without sacrificing performance. And integration between systems becomes more important as well, as organizations strive to obtain one view of the customer culled from WCM data, CRM data and more. • Low complexity shader to indicate the sides of a polyline

  I have a bunch of polylines that I draw using GL_LINES. They can have thousands of points. They actually represent the separation of land and water on a map. I don't have complete polygons, just the ordered set of points. I'm looking for a neat but efficient way to visually convey Side A and Side B as being different. For example I could offset the polyline in one direction a few times and fade it out (but every offset is doubling the number of points), or offset it once to make a "ribbon" and give one side a 'glow' like effect to mimic the outer glow or shadow of a polygon). This is for a mobile application and I'm using OpenGL ES 2. I'd like to keep the effect as simple as possible from a complexity stand point. I'm looking for some additional ideas; maybe there's a clever shader technique out there or a visual effect I haven't considered.

• For 2D games, is there any reason NOT to use a 3D API like Direct3D or OpenGL?

  I've been out of hobby Game Development for quite a while now. Back when I did it, most people used Direct Draw to create 2D games. By the time I stopped people were saying OpenGL or Direct3D with an orthogonal projection is just the way to go. I'm thinking about getting back into creating 2D games, in particular on mobile phone but maybe on the XNA platform as well. To make something using OpenGL I'd have a (hopefullly) small learning curve to acclimate myself to 3D development. Is there any reason to skip that and instead work with a 2D framework where I just have a Width x Height frame buffer I need to fill with pixels?

• What Type of Options should be on the Game Settings Menu?

  I have seen a post about the main menu options here: UI: Main Menu options for mobile games. What options should be listed? What do users want to see? But I want to know what kind of options should/need to be available on the settings screen. I am making a rather simple 2D game for Android, but really I haven't found many aspects that warrant an options button or a check box besides turning the sound and music on/off. I was thinking graphics settings but then again, how many apps really need graphics settings besides immersive 3D ones?

• The payment argument is nonsense

  In response to my HTML5 apps argument a few people came back to how the payment thingy is missing from my idea, and how it will (apparently) be worthless because of that. I’ve been thinking about that a lot in the past few days, and I’m increasingly of the opinion that the payment argument is nonsense.Sure, everybody who does iPhone apps, or who’s glancing cursorily at the mobile market without trying to gain in-depth knowledge, currently believes that the App Store concept is going to be a huge...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Problems connecting to eduroam wifi - ubuntu touch

  I am trying to connect to our university's eduroam wi-fi network with my Nexus 4 running Ubuntu touch (utopic latest build), but can't get past the first stage. I wonder if anyone can help please? I am following these instructions (which worked for my iPhone): http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/itsupport/mobile/eduroam/ But when I go to the bandit.st-andrews.ac.uk/connect page then follow the link to 'eduroam setup' I get the error message: Authorization Required This server could not verify that you are authorised to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required. Apache/2.2.16 (Debian) Server at bandit.st-andrews.ac.uk Port 443 (Clearly it's the latter option (browser) as I haven't been asked for my credentials yet.) Is there a way round this, or am I just not going to be able to connect until further down the Ubuntu touch development road... Thanks!

• Why does wifi hotspot doesn't work correctly?

  I have created the wifi hotspot. In windows, it used to display wifi signal on my nokia C3 but after creating wifi hotspot from ubuntu, I am facing certain problem. Nokia C3 doesn't even gets wifi signal. But wifi signal appears in my samsung mobile GTS3-850 and I can access wifi if I put wifi security option to "none" On the other hand, if I create password then Nomatters, if I type right password or not, it doesn't connect to that wifi. Note : I use Wimax to access internet.

• YouTube: How to Style an AngularJS App on the Device

  I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans. • Preparing for interview questions involving scale

  I have over 6 years of software development experience. I have worked on multiple platforms, including mobile. However, I have not had a chance of working on scale-related issues. As a consequence, whenever someone asks a question involving a million inputs in an interview, I find myself out of depth. How do I prepare for such questions? Any books/resources to refer to? There are books for Java and Data Structures and Concurrency, but I don't know about any definitive ones to learn about scaling.
