• Having py2exe include my data files (like include_package_data)

  I have a Python app which includes non-Python data files in some of its subpackages. I've been using the include_package_data option in my setup.py to include all these files automatically when making distributions. It works well. Now I'm starting to use py2exe. I expected it to see that I have include_package_data=True and to include all the files. But it doesn't. It puts only my Python files in the library.zip, so my app doesn't work. How do I make py2exe include my data files?

• ctypes and PySide

  I'm building an app with PySide, there's some image manipulation that needs to be done and using Python code for this is way too slow. Therefore I hacked out a .dll file that will do it for me. The function definition is as follows: extern "C" { QRectF get_image_slant(QImage *img, float slantangle, float offset) { Now I can load this function in via ctypes. But I can't seem to get ctypes to accept a QImage. I tried calling it like this: ext.get_image_slant(QImage(), 0, 0) And the reply I get is: File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ctypes.ArgumentError: argument 1: <type 'exceptions.TypeError'>: Don't know how to convert parameter 1 I tired casting the QImage to a c_void_p and it doesn't like that either. From what I can tell QImage() in python should map exactly to a QImage * in C, but Python doesn't seem to understand that.. Is there any way to force the casting?

• Client side html markdown conversion

  Hello, I've been trying to create a client side editor which allows the end user to create content in html or markdown. The user has two tabs for switching between the two. I managed to find some javascript that converts markdown to html, so if a user has been writing markdown and switches to the html tab, the html equivilant is shown. I haven't been able to find a javascript that converts html to markdown, only a python script. The python script is obviously server side. The tabs are just hyperlinks with script in there. Is there any way I can convert the markdown html when the user clicks the tab? The system has been created in python/django for reference Thanks

• QPluginLoader with PyQt modules as plugins: possible?

  Hi! I have a C++ application that loads externals plugins thanks to QPluginloader. QPluginLoader provides access to a Qt plugin. A Qt plugin is stored in a shared library (a DLL). The plugins have to inherit from a pure virtual class ( and Q_DECLARE_INTERFACE ) and QObject. I would like to create plugins by using python and PyQt. Is this possible without too much work? For instance if I have to convert the modules to C++ with boost::python, this could be nonsense, as PyQt is already a conversion from C++ to Python... Thanks!

• Look of the app - Py2exe / wxPython

  So my problem is the look and feel from my application, as it looks like an old look app. It is an wxPython application, and on python it runs fine and looks fine, but when I convert it to .exe using py2exe, the look is just bad. Now I know that if you are using XP you need some manifest to correct it but I am in other circumstances. I'm using Windows 7, and I'm using Python 2.6 (Yes, I am including the DLL's and the Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest). So my question is how can I solve this under these circumstances? NOTE: I tried to search on google, but the posts I found were rather old with people using XP and older python versions so I assumed it would be different? • Windows 7 Task Scheduler

  Hi All, Very new to this, and I have no idea where to start. I want to schedule a python script using Task Scheduler in Windows 7. When I add a "New Action", I place the following command as the script/program : c:\python25\python.exe As the argument, I add the full path to the location of my python script path\script.py Here is my script: import datetime import csv import os now = datetime.datetime.now() print str(now) os.chdir('C:/Users/Brock/Desktop/') print os.getcwd() writer = csv.writer(open("test task.csv", "wb")) row = ('This is a test', str(now)) writer.writerow(row) I got an error saying the script could not run. • Which revision of html5lib is stable?

  html5lib notes that it's latest release (0.11) is somewhat old. Using the Python portion, I have recursion problems as noted in Issue 70 and Issue 59 but can't find a recent Mercurial revision that is stable.   Hi all Recently i asked two questions (1 and 2) about using OpenType features in programs written by python and .net languages, but didn't get an answer. i realized there is no way to change text rendering engines of operating systems, or force them to use OpenType. so now want to implement my own. such a program that: provides a text engine that receives glyph shapes from otf and ttf files and renders them in sequence of glyphs in text. generates all of OTL features can be used in other parts of applications like controls and components of .NET or python GUI libraries. if python and .net languages are not suitable in this situation, aware me about other programming languages or tools. comments and answers about text rendering system of common Operating Systems, or designing text engines compatible with unicode 5.02 protocol are welcomed.

• large amount of data in many text files - how to process?

  Hi, I have large amounts of data (a few terabytes) and accumulating... They are contained in many tab-delimited flat text files (each about 30MB). Most of the task involves reading the data and aggregating (summing/averaging + additional transformations) over observations/rows based on a series of predicate statements, and then saving the output as text, HDF5, or SQLite files, etc. I normally use R for such tasks but I fear this may be a bit large. Some candidate solutions are to 1) write the whole thing in C (or Fortran) 2) import the files (tables) into a relational database directly and then pull off chunks in R or Python (some of the transformations are not amenable for pure SQL solutions) 3) write the whole thing in Python Would (3) be a bad idea? I know you can wrap C routines in Python but in this case since there isn't anything computationally prohibitive (e.g., optimization routines that require many iterative calculations), I think I/O may be as much of a bottleneck as the computation itself. Do you have any recommendations on further considerations or suggestions? Thanks

• begin...end VS braces {...} VS indentation grouping

  Hi, everyone. I don't want to fuel any holy-wars here, but I need to ask your opinion. Right now I'm in process of designing a Hardware Description Language as a project in my university. I decided to take VHDL language and just add some syntax-sugar 'coz VHDL is rather obese in syntax. I decided to use indentation to group blocks of code (like in Python), and I'm strongly criticized for that. Originally Begin...End; grouping is used in VHDL language. I have no clue what are cons and pros of these 3 types of grouping, the only thing I know is that I like Python style and I don't understand if it's usage could be erroneous or something? What do you think? What do you like? (hope that I can get some feedback from people who extensively used different languages with different code-grouping syntax, like Pasca, Ada, Delphi, C, C++, C#, Java, Python)

• stumped by WSGI module import errors

  Hi, I'm writing a bare bones Python wsgi application and am getting stumped by module import errors. I have a .py file in the current directory which initially failed to import. By adding sys.path.insert(0, '/Users/guhar/Sites/acom') the import of the module worked. But I now try and import a module that I had installed via easy_install and it fails to import. I tried setting sys.path.insert(0, '/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/') which contains the egg file, but to no avail. I would've thought that all packages under "/Library/Python/2.5/site-packages/" would be available to a WSGI application. Does anybody have any pointers?

  going through both the django book and tutorial, am a bit confused to the differences in approach (aren't they both written by the same people?) can anyone who has experience in both give a short review on them? i have decent python skills (largely untested though), but no experience at all in web apps and am trying to decide which one to stick to. i briefly looked in to practical django projects but that was a bit too complicated for me, my background is primarily bash scripting, the python i know i learned from an instant hacking tutorial and diving into python.

  Hello all. I am following the the tutorial at http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Tutorial to figure out how to use py2exe. I get down to step 3 where you are suppose to run the command: python setup.py py2exe I do that and then I get this error: 'python' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I have python 2.4 installed on my machine. any idea's? I am sure it is something simple.

• How do you sort files numerically?

  Hello all, First off, I'm posting this because when I was looking for a solution to the problem below, I could not find one on stackoverflow. So, I'm hoping to add a little bit to the knowledge base here. I need to process some files in a directory and need the files to be sorted numerically.   My python script uses subprocess to call a linux utility that is very noisy. I want to store all of the output to a log file, but only show some of it to the user. I thought the following would work, but the output does show up in my application until the utility has produced a significant amount of output. #fake_utility.py, just generates lots of output over time import time i = 0 while True: print hex(i)*512 i += 1 time.sleep(0.5) #filters output import subprocess proc = subprocess.Popen(['python','fake_utility.py'],stdout.subprocess.PIPE) for line in proc.stdout: #the real code does filtering here print "test:", line.rstrip() The behavior I really want is for the filter script to print each line as it is received from the subprocess. • GIS: When and why to use ArcObjects over GDAL programming to work with ArcGIS rasters and vectors?

  Im just starting off with GDAL + python to support operations that cannot be done with ArcGIS python geoprocessing scripting. Mainly I am doing spatial modeling/analysis/editing of raster and vector data. I am a bit confused when ArcObject development is required versus when GDAL can be used? Is there functionality of ArcObjects that GDAL does not do? Is the opposite true too? I am assuming that ArcObjects are more useful in developing online tools versus Desktop analysis and modeling where the difference is more to do with preference? In my case i prefer GDAL because of python support, which I believe ArcObjects lack. thanks!

• Structure accessible by attribute name or index options

  I am very new to Python, and trying to figure out how to create an object that has values that are accessible either by attribute name, or by index. For example, the way os.stat() returns a stat_result or pwd.getpwnam() returns a struct_passwd. In trying to figure it out, I've only come across C implementations of the above types. Nothing specifically in Python. What is the Python native way to create this kind of object? I apologize if this has been widely covered already. In searching for an answer, I must be missing some fundamental concept that is excluding me from finding an answer.

• login through twitter not working in osqa

  Hi, I have installed osqa on a site hosted on hostgator. The login functionality is working for google,yahoo,facebook. But when i click on twitter icon its generating an exception. I have already added the twitter consumer key and the twitter consumer secret through admin interface. • What causes subprocess.call to output blank file when attempting db export with mysqldump?

  I am having some problems using subprocess.call to export a database using mysqldump. I'm using Python 3.1 installed on Windows 7. from time import gmtime, strftime import subprocess DumpDir = "c:/apps/sqlbackup/"; DumpFile = "mysqldump-" + strftime("%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S", gmtime()) + ".sql"; params = [r"mysqldump --user root --password=mypassword --force --flush-privileges --compress --comments mydatabase --result-file=" + DumpDir + DumpFile]; subprocess.call(params, shell=True); The above code causes a blank file to be created in the DumpDir. I've tried getting python to print the command so I can test it via the CMD prompt using: print(subprocess.list2cmdline(params)); If I paste the output to the CMD prompt and execute it, everything works fine. Any ideas? I'm new to Python, so I am sure the answer is simple but I've tried so many variations to get this working that I just can't figure this out.

• Possible to access gdata api when using Java App Engine?

  I have a dilemma where I want to create an application that manipulates google contacts information. The problem comes down to the fact that Python only supports version 1.0 of the api whilst Java supports 3.0. I also want it to be web-based so I'm having a look at google app engine, but it seems that only the python version of app engine supports the import of gdata apis whilst java does not. So its either web based and version 1.0 of the api or non-web based and version 3.0 of the api. I actually need version 3.0 to get access to the extra fields provided by google contacts. So my question is, is there a way to get access to the gdata api under Google App Engine using Java? If not is there an ETA on when version 3.0 of the gdata api will be released for python? Cheers.
