• Installing Office 2010 without through group policy without an msi

  I have been breaking my head for several days now trying to install Microsoft office 2010 through group policy. Unfortunately Microsoft decided it would be fun to release office without an MSI and so I either 1) need to create an msi for it or 2) need to install it through a logon script that would run the setup.exe from a network location. Any advise would be greatlly appreciated. I tried to create a script but even though I double click it and it runs properly, it does not seem to kick in when users log in or when the machine is turned on. Also is there an easy way to create an msi? thanks! -Ri

• How do you manage large web farms?

  I have a quickly growing web farm running IIS 7 (30+ servers). All servers are identical copies of each other and all servers are physical. We update the software about once a month, and in the current process, we follow the following steps: Disable server from pool on F5 load balancer. Disable HTTP Keep-alives in IIS so connections drop quickly. Change default directory of website to new folder containing new binaries. Test server Enable HTTP Keep-alives. Enable server in F5 pool. Move to server 2 Microsoft used to have Application Center which was abandoned a while ago. They have made a second attempt with the Web Farm Framework, but this adds as much QA time testing the release package as it saves in the deployment. Has anyone seen a commercial off the shelf application that is tailored for managing and deploying to large web farms? Thanks!

• Change popup format for Kopete in Gnome (Ubuntu 10.04)

  After trialling Empathy which was included with Gnome/Ubuntu 10.04 I decided to go back to Kopete since I was losing chat messages. However, for some reason, Kopete is now displaying all popups in a big, ugly window with four options (ok, cancel, view, ignore, or something like that) that actually all seem to do nothing. I tried looking for options in Kopete to change the popup style to the nicer Gnome style one which goes up in the top-right of my desktop, but it doesn't seem to be possible with this release. So I had to resort to removing all popup messages from Kopete to prevent my screen being taking over by a popup requiring action for every incoming chat message. Unfortunately, this now means that I do not get any notifications when people message me - and so I can go a couple of hours without realising that they did. Anyone know how to get the nice, unobtrusive popups working in this version?

• Making python run on my webserver

  Hi all, im getting a bit stuck regarding options for running python scripts on my server. From the research ive done so far, i can see i need to modify apache slightly to run python scripts, by using either mod_wsgi or mod_python. Two issues i have: mod_python doesnt appear to be maintained anymore (last release, 2007) mod_wsgi appears to require modification of my httpd.conf file on a per application basis. What im wanting to know, is there a way of getting python scripts to run in the same way as php, i.e. just by going to index.py etc... or is it more involved than that? At present im just trying to set it up on my xampp install. Any help would be appreciated.

• Issues connecting to WPA2 with User Authentication Mavericks?

  I was on all the builds of the Mavericks beta and connecting to my University's network was fine. Then I upgraded to the public release and now I can't seem to connect to the internet. I can connect to other networks, but not my schools. Its a WPA2 network with a User Authentication. And my MacBook is a 2011? 2.2 GHz first gen i7 Quad Core with 8 GBs of RAM. Does anyone else have the same issue? Any tips on how to fix it? Thanks! heinst

• Modern open source NIDS/HIDS and consoles?

  Years back we set up an IDS solution by placing a tap in front of our exterior firewall, piping all the traffic on our DS1 through an IDS box and then sending the results off to a logging server running ACiD. This was around 2005-ish. I've been asked to revamp the solution and expand on it and looking around, I see that the last release of ACiD was from 2003 and I can't seem to find anything else that seems even remotely up-to-date. While these things may be feature complete, I worry about library conflicts, etc. Can anyone give me suggestions for a Linux/OpenBSD based solution using somewhat modern tools? Just to be clear, I know that Snort is still actively developed. I guess I'm more in the market for a modern open-source web console to consolidate the data. Of course if people have great experiences with IDS' other than Snort I'm happy to hear about it.

  I installed the release preview of Windows 8, which comes with Internet Explorer 10. IE10 has been endowed with a spell checking Feature, which is active while I write this text. As a matter of principle, I disable spell checking anywhere I go. I simply hate spell checking. I know better than the spell checker. (And when not it doesn't matter.) This is all the more annoying as I write in several languages and the spell checker only does one language (German, in this case), and then even in the new and wrong spelling, not in the old an true one. How can I disable this?

• VMWare and ALT GR key results in missing characters

  For some odd reason WMware products hijack the AltGy-key despite I make sure that other keys are used as hot keys to release mouse and keyboard from the virtual machine. While this is not a problem for US keyboards, european however who extensively use AltGR for characters such as pipe (|), at-sign (@), left brace ({) and right brace (}). This seem to happen both in Windows and Linux and I can not seem to find a solution that works for both. :( Anyone have an idea how to fix this without the need to modify the guest OS every time?   I'm troubleshooting a certain issue with my DHCP configuration, and need my Windows machine to ask for a "fresh" IP address, so I can see which address DHCP server gives by default. When I do ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew, Windows "proposes" its old IP address to the DHCP server (just checked with Wireshark, initial "DHCP Discover" message has Option-50 (requested IP address) with Windows machine's old IP). Tried disabling/enabling network adapter. Same behavior. Question: How can I force Windows to just ask for a new IP address, without proposing its old IP address.

  I have need of installing a Java 7 development environment on a RHEL 6.3 (system details are below). Following the official OpenJDK directions I tried yum install java-1.7.0-openjdk-devel (as root). This yields the error message: No package java-1.7.0-openjdk-devel available. The Java6 JDK java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel and the Java7 JRE java-1.7.0-openjdk are both available, but the Java7 JDK does not appear. Is there a non-default repository from which I can install this? • Getting error while running apt-get update

  I am getting the following error while running apt-get update on all of the servers. W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 8B48AA6247928553 W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. The solutions available are: To login into each of the server and run the following command to import the gpg key for that repo. sudo gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 8B48AA6247928553 sudo gpg --export --armor 8B48AA6247928553 | sudo apt-key add - But this requires logging into all of the individual servers and run the above two commands. I am looking for a way to correct by working on apt-repo server. Is there any way to do that.

• tcpview cannot kill connection/process

  I have a program that sometime misses to close a tcp connection. After the program has ended I can see that the port is taken. TCPViewer shows "non-existent" in the "Process" column. If i try to "End process" or "Close connection" nothing happens. If i reboot the server the port is released. But how can I tell Windows to release this port without a reboot? SOLUTION: It was dw20.exe (Microsoft Error Reporting) that was holding it back.

  I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points.   The webcam on my Asus G51Jx doesn't work now that I've upgraded to Windows 8. I've looked on the Asus site, but they don't seem to have drivers for Windows 8 yet. At least on my machine.   Hi, I'm not an expert in writing shell scripts but also I'm looking for a very specific solution. OS: CentOS release 5.2 (Final) I've a Java standalone which keeps writing (all System.out.println) to a log file. For some unknown reason, this Java standalone stops working at some point of time in my server and eventually logs writing also stops working. I want to have a script which checks the last modified date & time of the log file with current date & time in the server. If the time difference exceeds more than 5 minutes, I want to send an email immediately to my recipients list. This way I'll come to know when this Java standalone has stopped working. I'll move this script to crontab and make it run for every 1 minute, so that this whole process is automated. Log file location: /usr/local/logs/standalone.log

  I have been using IIS7.5 Since its release. I am also using commerce server 2007sp2. Due to Commerce Servers Need for memory and processor I have the app pool the website is assigned to recycling at midnight every night. My Question is what is the best time table to recycle heavy web app pools? I am looking to keep speed and not bump potential customers while recycling multiple times a day if possible. Another issue is that every few days the same app pool will hang and I have to force a reset of IIS to get it working again.

• How do I upgrade Django 1.3.1 to 1.4? Any tips, tutorials, or warnings?

  Django 1.4 was recently released. Almost all the information about Django 1.4 is in the release note, but I didn't see anything about how to upgrade. Should I just remove the django folder inside Python's site-packges and download 1.4? I think I originally installed Django using emerge and yum but I'm not sure if the package management systems are up-to-date with Django 1.4 yet. That might be ok on my server instance (Gentoo Linux), but on my local instance I am using virtualenvwrapper (on Mac OS 10.7), so maybe I want to create a new Python virtual environment for Djago 1.4. Or maybe not since I don't really care about backward compatibility with 1.3.1.

• Upgrading from php 5.3 to php 5.4 with Macport

  PHP5.4 has been available for sometime now and Macport recently caught up with the release of port php54 but the process of upgrading is not as clear as possible. Even worst for those who are new to maintaining multiple versions of PHP on the same machine. I am keen on trying out some of the new features in PHP5.4 like traits, new array form etc but falling back on to php5.3 for other compatibility stuff. So i sudo port install php5+ (all the variants, apache2 etc) Then i tell it what PHP port to use as default sudo port select --set php php54 Check what version of PHP is active in the terminal using php -v outputs php 5.4.3. But i seem to be having issues with choosing the right non cli version as in the version of the module run by apache etc is still php5.3.12. Do i have to change the reference to the libphp5 in apache httpd.conf? Any advice on the right workflow for switching between php version on macport greatly appreciated!

• How to debug high memory usage by registry?

  I have a windows 2008 r2 server running ADFS2 and some web apps that is having issues with low memory. Digging around I found that the 5.5 GB were being used under Kernel Memory (paged). Further digging with Poolmon, I discovered that the majority of that (5GB+) was being used by CM - configuration manager. Also known as the registry. I'm really now sure how to tell why the registry is using so much memory however, or how to release it? Looking at the physical registry files they don't appear that large.   I need a regular expression in Notepad++ to search/replace a string. My document (xml) has serveral thousand lines that look similar to this: <Url Source="Output/username/project/Content/Volume1VolumeName/TopicFileName.htm" /> I need to replace everything starting from Volume1 to .htm" / to replaced with X's or some other character to mask the actual file names in this file. So the resulting string would look like this after the search/replace was performed: <Url Source="Output/username/project/Content/Volume1XxxxxxXxxx/XxxxxXxxxXxxx.htm" /> I am working with confidential information that I cannot release to people outside of my company, but i need to send an example log file to a 3rd party for troubleshooting purposes. FYI the X's do not need to follow the upper/lower case after the replacement, i was just using different case X's for the hell of it :)

  It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

• How to make Windows 7 Network show Samba share after VM is rebooted/restored?

  On Windows 7, I have VirtualBox running Linux (Ubuntu 8.04), with Samba set up so that the Windows host can access it. But if the virtual machine is shut down & restored, or rebooted, the Windows Network no longer shows it. I've tried refreshing many times, restarting Samba, disabling/enabling the virtual network adapter, and running the succession of commands ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, & ipconfig /renew, but none worked. As a last resort I could restart the host itself, but is there a better way?
