• Connect android to database

  I am doing a school project where we need to create an android application which needs to connect to a database. the application needs to gain and store information for people's profiles on the database. But unfortunatly we are a little bit stuck at this point because there are numerous ways to link the application such as http request through apache or through the SOAP/REST protocol. But it's really hard to find good instructions or tutorials on the problem since I can't really find them. Maybe that's cause i'm probably using the wrong words on google. Unfortunately I have little relevant information. So if anyone can help me with finding relevant links to good online tutorials or howto's than those are very welcome.

• Asp.net Page and control Events

  I have looked all over the web and I can not find the information I am looking for and I was hoping that someone could give me a hand. Specifically, I am looking for a comprehensive list of what events occur in the page and control life cycles and what is "available" in each event. Like when can I get a dropdownlists selected value, when can i databind, when can I get at values in view state and what not. Can anyone point me to a comprehensive list for both page and control life cycles? Or even provide that information for me? Thanks in advance.

• How to enforce a site-wide license?

  We have a small .Net program that we sell with individual licenses. The individual licenses are enforced by registering a key file that is generated using information from the machine used to install the program (MAC address, etc.) Now, we have a customer request for a site-wide license, such that they can deploy to as many machines on their site as possible. From the technical POV I'm not sure what are the usual approaches for this; our old approach won't work since we can't map the license to any machine-specific information. Any suggestions? A few more details: the program is a client-side program that includes an Office Add-In the machines to be installed on may or may not have internet access we aren't restricted to .Net-only approaches, I'm just looking for a general idea of how this sort of thing is usually handled

• Why is Postgres doing a Hash in this query?

  I have two tables: A and P. I want to get information out of all rows in A whose id is in a temporary table I created, tmp_ids. However, there is additional information about A in the P table, foo, and I want to get this info as well. I have the following query: SELECT A.H_id AS hid, A.id AS aid, P.foo, A.pos, A.size FROM tmp_ids, P, A WHERE tmp_ids.id = A.H_id AND P.id = A.P_id I noticed it going slowly, and when I asked Postgres to explain, I noticed that it combines tmp_ids with an index on A I created for H_id with a nested loop. However, it hashes all of P before doing a Hash join with the result of the first merge. P is quite large and I think this is what's taking all the time. Why would it create a hash there? P.id is P's primary key, and A.P_id has an index of its own.

• Would opencv be a good choice for image colour summarization?

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. Would opencv be a good choice for this? What other libraries or specific algorithms might be helpful?

• How to update SQL Server database from multiple data sources for ASP.Net MVC 4 application

  I have 10+ SQL Server databases, from where I would use one table from each database to display information using the application that I am creating. For instance, DB1, DB2....DB10. NewDB (Account, Country, Costcenter....etc.). I have started with creating a new database which would contain all the information from all those 10+ databases. However, I am confused in many cases. First of all what process should I follow? Shall I create a table (in new database) with the same structure as the actual data source and insert data from actual data source to new database? Should I be doing this on the DBMS? If so, is it some scripting? (hint expected since very new to this) I am creating a report generation application which has 10+ data sources. I need some hint which way should I proceed? Thanks for advice/help in advance.

  I am doing some web development on some long forms. There are many fields for me to fill out to get through the form. Instead of typing out the same things every time (contact information, address, business information) I'm hoping there is some tool out there / combination of tools that will assist me in filling this out. Requirements: I am doing development / testing in FF, IE, and Chrome on a Win 7 system, so the tool would leverage one of those platforms. Oh yeah, one more thing: It's got to be free and lightweight, otherwise, I'd rather just type out responses to the form fields.

  I need a script that can run and pull information from any drive on a Windows operating system (Windows Server 2003), listing all files and folders which contain the following fields: The server is quite big and is within our domain. The required information is: Full file path (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents\testPage.doc) File type (e.g. word document, spreadsheet, database etc) Size When Created When last modified When last accessed Also the script will need to convert that data to a CSV file, which later on I can modify and process in Excel. I can imagine that this data will be huge but I still need it. I am logged in as an administrator on the server and the script will need to also process protected files. As in previous posts I have read that the script will stop if such files are processed. I need to make sure that not a single file is skipped. Please note I have asked this question before but still have not got a working script. • Retain ViewData when editing variable length list

  I'm editing variable length lists and use ViewData to pass around information for filling a DropDownList. I use the method described here for editing these lists: http://blog.stevensanderson.com/2010/01/28/editing-a-variable-length-list-aspnet-mvc-2-style/ The data for this dropdownlist comes from the database. As the ViewData is not available across requests, I currently do a new query to the database each and every time. This also happens when the ModelState is not valid and the form is redisplayed. Of course, this is less then ideal even for a light-weight query as this one. How can I retain the information from that query across requests as long as the user is editing the page with that variable length list?

• Can't control connection bit rate using iwconfig with Atheros TL-WN821N (AR7010)

  I'm trying to reduce the connection bit rate on my Atheros TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 usb wifi adapter due to frequent instability issues (reported connection speed goes down to 1Mb/s and I have to physically reconnect the adapter to regain a connection). I know this is a common problem with this device, and I have tried everything I can think of to fix it, including using drivers from linux-backports; compiling and installing a custom firmware (following instructions on https://wiki.debian.org/ath9k_htc#fw-free) and (as a last resort) using ndiswrapper. When using ndiswrapper, the wifi adapter is stable and operates in g mode at 54Mb/s (whilst when using the default ath9k_htc module, the adapter connects in n mode and the bit rate fluctuates constantly). Unfortunately, with this setup I have to run my processor using only one core, since using SMP with ndiswrapper causes a kernel oops on my system. So I want to lock my bit rate to 54Mb/s (or less, if need be) for connection stability, using the ath9k_htc module. I've tried 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M'; the command runs with no error but when I check the bit rate with 'sudo iwlist wlan0 bitrate' the command returns: wlan0 unknown bit-rate information. Current Bit Rate:78 Mb/s Any ideas? Here's some info (hopefully relevant) on my setup: Xubuntu (12.04.3) 64bit (kernel 3.2.0-55.85-generic) using Network Manager. • How do I assign a value from params, or session, whichever exists?

  What is the "Rails-way" or the "Ruby-way" of doing the following: In my controller, I'm creating and instance of an Options class. It will be initialized with information in the params hash if the params hash exists. Otherwise, it will check the sessions hash for the information. Finally, it will initialize with defaults if neither params nor session has the data it needs. Here is how I'm doing it now (it works fine, but it seems a little ugly): if params[:cust_options] @options = CustomOptions.new( params[:cust_options] ) else if session[:cust_options @options = CustomOptions.new( session[:cust_options] ) else @options = CustomOptions.new end end session[:cust_options] = @options.to_hash Like I said, everything is working fine, I'm just looking for a more idiomatically Ruby way of writing this block of code.

• Webservice for uploading data: security considerations

  Hi everyone! Im not sure about what authentification method I should use for my webservice. I've searched on SO, and found nothing that helped me. Preliminary Im building an application that uploads data from a local database to a server (running my webservice), where all records are merged and stored in a central database. I am currently binary serializing a DataTable, that holds a small fragment of the local database, where all uninteresting stuff is already filtered out. The byte[] (serialized DataTable), together with the userid and a hash of the users password is then uploaded to the webservice via SOAP. The application together with the webservice already work exactly like intended. The Problem The issue I am thinking about is now: What is if someone just sniffs the network traffic, 'steals' the users id and password hash to send his own SOAP message with modified data that corrupts my database? Options The approaches to solving that problem, I already thought of, are: Using ssl + certificates for establishing the connection: I dont really want to use ssl, I would prefer a simpler solution. After all, every information that is transfered to the webservice can be seen on the website later on. What I want to say is: there is no secret/financial/business-critical information, that has to be hidden. I think ssl would be sort of an overkill for that task. Encrypting the byte[]: I think that would be a performance killer, considering that the goal of the excercise was simply to authenticate the user. Hashing the users password together with the data: I kind of like the idea: Creating a checksum from the data, concatenating that checksum with the password-hash and hashing this whole thing again. That would assure the data was sent from this specific user, and the data wasnt modified. The actual question So, what do you think is the best approach in terms of meeting the following requirements? Rather simple solution (As it doesnt have to be super secure; no secret/business-critical information transfered) Easily implementable retrospectively (Dont want to write it all again :) ) Doesnt impact to much on performance What do you think of my prefered solution, the last one in the list above? Is there any alternative solution I didnt mention, that would fit better? You dont have to answer every question in detail. Just push me in the right direction.   I use Visual Studio .NET to develop internal applications. I create a Windows control that will display custom status bar information. Different developers will use the control to display the same information in many different applications. The control must always be displayed at the bottom of the parent form in every application. It must always be as wide as the form. When the form is resized, the control should be resized and repositioned accordingly. How should I do that in the best way and why? A)Create a property to allow the developers to set the Dock property of the control. Set the default value of the property to AnchorStyle.Bottom. B) Create a property to allow the developer to set the Anchor property of the control. Set the default value of the property to AnchorStyle.Bottom.

The REST endpoints can be published on Java SE HTTP Server, Grizzly 2 HTTP container, and some basic Servlet-based deployments. It also provides HTTPURLConnection-based client API implementation. • Hulu desktop stopped working on my Dell

  After last weeks flash update Hulu desktop no longer works on my Dell laptop though it still works on my HP Desktop. Here's what CLI tells me on the Dell: Inspiron-1564:~$ huludesktop Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I tried: sudo apt-get install libvdpau_nvidia.so but got E: Unable to locate package libvdpau_nvidia.so and E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libvdpau_nvidia.so' Hulu does work through the browser and through XBMC. XBMC just doesn't seem to match the video quality of the Hulu Desktop. I don't really know why a nvidia.so is needed for my Intel graphics that comes on Dell Insiron 1564's. anyway. So, do you guys have a solution?

• Approach to data wrapping

  I'm developing in PHP and MySQL. The information about the currently logged in user is stored in many different tables. The information that I need on each page, I preload. However if something is needed from a rarely accessed table - then I do $newdata = $db->Query('SELECT * FROM rare_table WHERE user_id='.$user->id); I would like to simplify the above to a point where I don't have to specify that the query should be limited to this particular user. An ideal function call would be: $newdata = $user->Query('SELECT * FROM rare_table'); Obviously I'd have to parse the SQL and add a WHERE clause. Or add to the already existing clause. Questions: are there tools to do this? How can I develop this? Is this even a good idea?

• Connecting two DialogBoxes in GWT

  In my GWT project, I'm trying to get it so two DialogBoxes can pass information between each other. One of them holds a MapWidget, and when a button is pressed in the other DialogBox, the position information is received from that other DialogBox's MapWidget. Does anyone have any tips for how I should coordinate between having two different DialogBoxes show up? Should I wrap the code for the two in a Composite? Furthermore, is there an example anywhere of dealing with two DialogBoxes at once in GWT? For example, if I click outside of the two boxes, both should be dismissed. I'm wondering if there's a way to keep both of them in focus at once, so I can switch between the two without causing either to disappear.

• How far can you get in iOS without learning PhotoShop or another graphic design program? [on hold]

  I'm in the process of learning iOS, and I'm coming from a web dev background where CSS controls 70-90% of the UI, and Python/C++ desktop dev where there are highly customizable UI toolkits for most things. I'm trying to figure out how people make good-looking apps without graphic design skills. You always hear about some 8 year old or 14 year old who made a successful app. So I assume that even if the required code was relatively basic, the app must have looked good if it was a success. But I find it really unlikely that these kids have advanced PhotoShop skills as well as having learned iOS programming at such a young age. Frankly, the same goes for most independent app developers....as they say, unicorns don't exist. So what's the deal? Can you make a good-looking, market quality app without those skills? What are the limitations?

  I have initialised an instance of a class i have called "Relation" this class also contains a list of "Bills".   Stackoverflow members, How do you currently find the balance between javascript and code behind. I have recently come across some extremely bad (in my eyes) legacy code that lends itself to chaos (someHugeJavafile.js) which contains a lot of the logic used in many of the pages. Let's say for example that you have a Form that you need to complete. 1. Personal Details 2. Address Information 3. Little bit more about yourself You don't want to overload the person with all the fields at once, so you decide to split it up into steps. Do you create separate pages for Personal Details, Address Information and a Little bit more about yourself. Do you create controls for each and hide and show them on a postback or using some update panel? Do you use jQuery and do some checking to ensure that the person has completed the required fields for the step and show the new "section" by using .show()? How do you usually find the balance?
