• How can I force a Word plugin to be re-enabled after being automatically disabled?

  I have been developing a plugin for MS Word (2007) and recently it was causing some crashes on exit and I guess Word automatically disabled it. I went into Word Options under COM Add-ins and checked the box to re-enable it, but when I click okay and then open Word again it's still shown as disabled. I tried looking for something in the registry for this but I wasn't able to find anything. Is there some file or registry key that contains the enabled/disabled status of plugins?

  Watched some MountainWest RubyConf 2014 talks and noticed an interesting theme. Many dynamic programming environments back in the old days used to be self-contained VM images, e.g. SmallTalk, GemStone/S. One could checkpoint, modify, and ship these images wholesale and have it up and running with very little effort. Fast forward to now and I'm still using Make files to configure and install binaries. What happened?

I usually add this to a partial and include the partial in my layouts. "flash", :id = flash_type % "text/javascript" do % setTimeout("new Effect.Fade('');", 10000); This will wrap the flash message in a div with class=‘flash’ and id=‘error’, ‘notice’ or ‘warn’ depending on the flash key specified.The value ‘10000’ is the time in milliseconds before the flash will disappear. In this case, 10 seconds.This function looks pretty good and little javascript stunts like this can help make your site feel more professional. It’s also worth bearing in mind though, not everybody can see well or read as quickly as others so this may not be suitable for every application.Update:As Mitchell has pointed out (see comments below), it may be better to set the flash_type as the div class rather than it’s id. If there is the possibility that you’ll be showing more than one flash message per page, setting the flash_type as the div id will result in your HTML/XHTML code becoming invalid because the unique intentifier will be used more than once per page.Here is a slightly more complex version of the method shown above that will hide all divs with class ‘flash’ after a time delay, achieving the same effect and also ensuring your code stays valid with more than one flash message! • What programming languages have you taught your children?

  I'm a C# developer by trade but have had exposure to many languages (including Java, C++, and multiple scripting languages) over the course of my education and career. Since I code in the MS world for work I am most familiar with their stack and so I was excited when Small Basic was announced. I immediately started teaching my oldest to program in it but felt that something was missing from the experience. Being able to look up every command with the IDE's intellisense seemed to take something from the experience. Sure, it was easy to grasp but I found myself thinking that a little more challenge might be in order. I'm looking for something better and I would like to hear your experiences with teaching your children to program in whatever language you have chosen to do so in. What did you like and dislike? How fast did they pick it up? Were they challenged? Frustrated? Thank you very much!

• Is monkeypatching considered good programming practice?

  I've been under impression, that monkeypatching is more in quick and dirty hack category, rather than standard, good programming practice. While I'd used from time to time to fix minor issues with 3rd party libs, I considered it temporary fix and I'd submit proper patch to the 3rd party project. However, I've seen this technique used as "the normal way" in mainstream projects, for example in Gevent's gevent.monkey module. • Help deploying using Capistrano to HostGator

  My company uses HostGator to host our web sites, and I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what my final steps are to get a functioning RoR app up there. I've got all the way up to configuring mongrel (I think?) and being able to run deploy:cold without any errors. However, I can't seem to get the app to show up in the designated CPanel area (HG says the name "current" is already reserved for another application), and I'm not sure which port was allowed for me to use. I've opened tickets with Customer Support just to be told that "You can't access the database with root"... Totally unrelated to my question... So I think I'm in the final stretch and if anyone has any insight or experience with HostGator, please cue me in.

  This blogpost was posted on Hacker News with several upvotes. Coming from C++, most of these examples seem to go against what I've been taught. Such as example #2: Bad: def check_for_overheating(system_monitor) if system_monitor.temperature > 100 system_monitor.sound_alarms end end versus good: system_monitor.check_for_overheating class SystemMonitor def check_for_overheating if temperature > 100 sound_alarms end end end The advice in C++ is that you should prefer free functions instead of member functions as they increase encapsulation. Both of these are identical semantically, so why prefer the choice that has access to more state? Example 4: Bad: def street_name(user) if user.address user.address.street_name else 'No street name on file' end end versus good: def street_name(user) user.address.street_name end class User def address @address || NullAddress.new end end class NullAddress def street_name 'No street name on file' end end Why is it the responsibility of User to format an unrelated error string? What if I want to do something besides print 'No street name on file' if it has no street? What if the street is named the same thing? Could someone enlighten me on the "Tell, Don't Ask" advantages and rationale? I am not looking for which is better, but instead trying to understand the author's viewpoint.

Model: answers ... My question is, with the example I gave, should I start at the top model (textbook) or the bottom most (answers)?

• View Centreon graph data

  Is there a way to view the data that Centreon uses to build graphs, from within the Centreon web interface? We have some gaps in some of our graphs, and I would like to see if it is a problem with the data being returned from the NRPE plugins. I have seen the MonitoringEvent Logs section, but I can't get that to show the returned string and status for each call to a particular plugin, which is what I'd like. • Restricting crawler activity to certain directories with robots.txt

  I would like to use robots.txt to prevent indexing of some parts of my website. I want search engines to index only the / directory and not search inside my controllers. In my robots.txt, I have this: User-Agent: * Disallow: /compagnies/ Disallow: /floors/ Disallow: /spaces/ Disallow: /buildings/ Disallow: /users/ Disallow: / I put this file in /mysite/public. I tested the file with a robots.txt validator and got no errors. However, Google always returns the result of my site. For testing, I added Disallow: /, but again, Google indexed all pages. floors, spaces, buildings, etc. are not physical directories. Is this a bug? How can I work around it?

  When you create a test for your class, what kind of naming convention do you use for the tests? How thorough are your tests? I have lately switched from the conventional camel case test names to lower case letters with underscores. I have found this increases the readability and causes me to write better tests. And, when one fails, you will know exactly what the issue is.

  I like to tag my emails in Mozilla Thunderbird 10.0.2, but the tagging system that is built in just isn't sufficient, I want to use something a little closer to the suggest tag system that is built into Stackexchange, where existing tags will display as I type them, and they will be separated using some sort of delimiter (such as a space or a comma). Does anyone know of any mail tagging plugins like that?

  I made a custom class to display character portrait in RPGMaker XP Here is the class : class Poser attr_accessor :images def initialize @images = Sprite.new @images.bitmap = RPG::Cache.picture('Character.png') #100x300 @images.x = 540 #place it on the bottom right corner of the screen @images.y = 180 end end Create an event on the map to create an instance as global variable, tada! image popped out. Ok nice. But Im not satisfied, Now I want it to have bobbing-head animation-like (just like when we breathe, sometimes bob our head up and down) so I added another method : def move(x,y) @images.x += x @images.y += y end def animate(x,y,step,delay) forward = true 2.times { step.times { wait(delay) if forward move(x/step,y/step) else move(-x/step,-y/step) end } wait(delay*3) forward = false } end def wait(time) while time > 0 time -= 1 Graphics.update end end I called the method to run the animation and it works, so far so good, but the problem is, WHILE the portrait goes up and down, I cannot move my character until the animation is finished. So that's it, I'm stuck in the loop block, what I want is to watch the portrait moving up and down while I walk around village, talk to npc, etc. Anyone can solve my problem ? Or better solution ? • SSL is not enabled in Heroku

  Since Heroku has integrated the piggybank_ssl addon by default, trying: heroku addons:add piggyback_ssl or heroku addons:add ssl:piggyback results in: ! This add-on is now a standard Heroku platform feature. ! Your apps can already use piggyback SSL. But, accessing: mywebsite.herokuapp.com results in: SSL is not enabled mywebsite.herokuapp.com does not have SSL enabled. My production.rb has: config.force_ssl = true What am I missing? Update I have read the page SSL on Heroku, but it's obsolete, they suggest to run: heroku addons:add piggyback_ssl Which is no longer necessary. SOLVED ! I don't change anything, and now it's working. It seems that it was a heroku problem.

• How to Structure a Trinary state in DB and Application

  How should I structure, in the DB especially, but also in the application, a trinary state? For instance, I have user feedback records which need to be reviewed before they are presented to the general public. This means a feedback reviewer must see the unreviewed feedback, then approve or reject them. I can think of a couple ways to represent this: Two boolean flags: Seen/Unseen and Approved/Rejected. This is the simplest and probably the smallest database solution (presumably boolean fields are simple bits). The downside is that there are really only three states I care about (unseen/approved/rejected) and this creates four states, including one I don't care about (a record which is seen but not approved or rejected is essentially unseen). String column in the DB with constants/enum in application. Using Rating::APPROVED_STATE within the application and letting it equal whatever it wants in the DB. This is a larger column in the db and I'm concerned about doing string comparisons whenever I need these records. Perhaps mitigatable with an index? Single boolean column, but allow nulls. A true is approved, a false is rejected. A null is unseen. Not sure the pros/cons of this solution. What are the rules I should use to guide my choice? I'm already thinking in terms of DB size and the cost of finding records based on state, as well as the readability of code the ends up using this structure.

• PHP or RoR... Which is simpler?

  I'd like a server side scripting language for the web either php or ror: to do some dirty simple data fetching and eventually handing it off to my ajax app. I usually use php for this but I keep hearing the ror buzz word. I'm wondering for those who have used both, which is ultimately simpler to get something quick and dirty running? I'm a bit turned off to RoR as it seems to have many files (it's more of a framework), whereas php can potentially just be one file and that's it. But maybe I'm wrong, can you clue me in?

  I'm building a distributed storage system that works with different storage sizes. For instance, my storage devices have sizes of 50GB, 70GB, 150GB, 250GB, 1000GB, 5 storage systems in one system. My application will store any files to the storage system. Question: How can I build a distributed storage with the idea of data redundancy and fail-over to store documents, videos, any type of files at the same time ensuring that should one of any storage devices fail, there would be another copy of these files on another storage device. However, the concern is, 50GB of storage can only store this maximum number of files as compared to 70GB, 150GB etc. With one storage in mind, bringing 5 storage systems like a cloud storage, is there any logical way to distribute or store the files through my application? How do I ensure data redundancy through different storage sizes? Is there any algorithm to collate multiple blob files into a single file archive? What is the best solution for one cloud storage with multiple different storage sizes? I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

• Segment subdomains with Google Analytics?

  So, when a website has multiple subdomains: www.example.com foo.example.com bar.example.com What is the best way to use Google Analytics to segment the data? I would prefer have access to 'All Data', 'Data from foo.example.com', and 'Data from bar.example.com'. I tried setting up 3 different views, and setting a filter on the foo/bar views that says: Include only traffic from the ISP domain that are equal to foo.example.com. However, I am not seeing any data collected into that View. I do, however, see all data in the 'All Data' view, but I can't figure out how to segment the data. I am including the analytics.js in the application.haml layout, which is always loaded in this app. Thanks!

  I hate software editors who pretend to know better what you need and choose for you. Java and c# pretend multiple inheritance is dangerous. That I agree I often use Interface but in some cases I may need multiple inheritance : why not let me choose ? Also today you have to choose between RPC call à la Java and Message passing à la Objective C. Again can't I choose when one or the other is more practical ? So is there any language on earth which will free me from what I want to choose to use dependending on MY context and MY own judgement ?

• Classless tables possible with Datamapper?

  I have an Item class with the following attributes: itemId,name,weight,volume,price,required_skills,required_items. Since the last two attributes are going to be multivalued, I removed them and create new schemes like: itemID,required_skill (itemID is foreign key, itemID and required_skill is primary key.) Now, I'm confused how to create/use this new table. Here are the options that came to my mind: 1) The relationship between Items and Required_skills is one-to-many, so I may create a RequiredSkill class, which belongs_to Item, which in turn has n RequiredSkills. Then I can do Item.get(1).requiredskills. This sounds most logical to me. 2) Since required_skills may well be thought of as constants (since they resemble rules), I may put them into a hash or gdbm database or another sql table and query from there, which I don't prefer. My question is: is there sth like a modelless table in datamapper, where datamapper is responsible from the creation and integrity of the table and allows me to query it in datamapper way, but does not require a class, like I may do it in sql?
