  I have a ASP.NET 2.0 web application that should upload a ppt file and then extract its slides to images. For that I have imported office.dll and Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.dll assemblies and wrote the following code public static int ExtractImages(string ppt, string targetPath, int width, int height) { var pptApplication = new ApplicationClass(); var pptPresentation = pptApplication.Presentations.Open(ppt, MsoTriState.msoTrue, MsoTriState.msoFalse, MsoTriState.msoFalse); var slides = new List<string>(); for (var i = 1; i <= pptPresentation.Slides.Count; i++) { var target = string.Format(targetPath, i); pptPresentation.Slides[i].Export(target, "jpg", width, height); slides.Add(new FileInfo(target).Name); } pptPresentation.Close(); return slides.Count; } If I run this code in my local machine, in asp.net or a executable, it runs perfectly. But If I try running it in the production server, I get the following error: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): PowerPoint could not open the file. at Microsoft.Office.Interop.PowerPoint.Presentations.Open(String FileName, MsoTriState ReadOnly, MsoTriState Untitled, MsoTriState WithWindow) at PPTImageExtractor.PptConversor.ExtractImages(String caminhoPpt, String caminhoDestino, Int32 largura, Int32 altura, String caminhoThumbs, Int32 larguraThumb, Int32 alturaThumb, Boolean geraXml) at Upload.ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) The process is running with the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE. IIS is configured to use anonymous authentication. The anonymous user is an administrator, I set it like this to allow the application to run without having to worry about permissions. In my development machine I have office 2010 beta1. I have tested with the executable in a pc with office 2007 as well. And if I run the code from the executable in the server, with office 2003 installed, it runs perfectly. To ensure that there wouldn't be any problems with permissions, everyone in the server has full access to the web site. The website is running in IIS7 and Classic Mode. I also heard that Open-office has an API that should be able to do this, but I couldn't find anything about it. I don't mind using DLLImport to do what I have to do and I can install open-office on the web server. Don't worry about rewriting this method, as long as the parameters are the same, everything will work. I appreciate your help. ps: Sorry for bad English.

• ffmpeg - How to determine if -movflags faststart is enabled? PHP

  While I am able to encode an mp4 file which I can plan on my local windows machine, I am having trouble encoding files to mp4 which are readable when streaming by safari, etc. After a bit of reading, I believe my issue is that I must move the metadata from the end of the file to the beginning in order for the converted mp4 files to be streamable. To that end, I am trying to find out if the build of ffmpeg that I am currently using is able to use the -movflags faststart option through php - as my current outputted mp4 files are not working when streamed online. This is the way I am now echoing the -help, -formats, -codecs, but I am not seeing anything about -movflags faststart in any of the lists: exec($ffmpegPath." -help", $codecArr); for($ii=0;$ii<count($codecArr);$ii++){ echo $codecArr[$ii].'</br>'; } Is there a similar method of determining if -movflags fastart is available to my ffmpeg build? • ASP.NET site move to IIS7 results in gibberish characters in page output

  I have an ASP.NET site that was working fine running on Windows Server 2003 / IIS6. I moved it to Windows Server 2008 / IIS7 and the aspx page output now includes gibberish text. For example: p???? ????? The majority of the page renders properly, but there is gibberish here and there. I have checked the event logs and there is nothing. Any idea what's going on here? How can I fix this? I have noticed that this issue shows up when I include multiple Server.Execute statements in the aspx code: <% Server.Execute("/inc/top.inc"); %> <% Server.Execute("/inc/footer.inc"); %> The .inc files above contain just html. It appears that the files have to be of a significant length to cause the error.   Seems like this would be a common question, though I could not find it on SO. Which version of MSXML should I use in my applications, and more importantly, how should I decide? There is MSXML3, 4, 5 and 6. I recently posted some code in calling-wcf-service-by-vbscript that used MSXML v4. AnthonyWJones posted that I shouldn't use 4, but instead 3 or 6, but probably 3. Certainly not v5! Why? I'd like to know more about the criteria for selecting the version of MSXML to use in my apps. Bonus question: Does anyone have a summary of the differences between the various versions of MSXML over time? Summary so far: MSXML6 Should be first choice. was released in 2006, and includes perf and compliance fixes. Use this if you can. It's good. There are no merge modules; to bundle the MSXML6 runtime with your app, MS suggests packaging the MSXML6 msi file. MSXML6 is an upgrade from MSXML3/4 but does not replace them, because it discontinues some features. You can get the MSI here. MSXML3 Second choice. Most widely deployed version. Originally shipped in March 2000. Actively maintained, no new features. Currently supported, if you are on SP5 (shipped in 2005) or later. SP7 is current (also from 2005). MSXML5 was released only as part of MS-Office. Currently supported by Microsoft, but only as part of Office, not for building apps. Don't build apps that depend on MSXML5: Verboten. MSXML4 originally shipped? Currently in "maintenance mode". Microsoft is encouraging people to move off MSXML4 to MSXML6. • log4net not logging with a mixture of .net 1.1 and .net 3.5

  Hi All, I have an iis server on a windows 2003 production machine that will not log using log4net in the .net3.5 web application. Log4net works fine in the 1.1 apps using log4net version 1.2.9.0 and but not the 3.5 web app. The logging works fine in a development and staging environment but not in production. It does not error and I receive no events logged in the event viewer and don't know where to look next. I have tried both versions of log4net (1.2.9.0 and 1.2.10.0) and both work in development and staging but not in production. For testing purposes I have created just a single page application that just echos back the time when the page is hit and also is supposed to log to my logfile using log4net.   Operating system : WinXP Program and version you use to access Google Calendar (FF3.5): I'm developing a script (based on an existing vCal ASP.NET class I found online) to generate an .ics file. This file works perfectly when importing to Outlook 2003. When I try to import to Google Calendar, I get the following error: Failed to import events: Unable to process your iCal/CSV file..   Just a sidenote: I'm not sure whether I should post this to serverfault as well, because some MOSS admin may have some info for me as well? A bit of explanation first (without Asp.net MVC) Is it possible to integrate the two? Is it possible to write an application that would share at least credential information with MOSS? I have to write a MOSS application that has to do with these technologies: MOSS 2010 Personal client certificates authentication (most probably on USB keys) Active Directory Federation Services Separate SQL DB that would serve application specific data (separate as not being part of MOSS DB) How should it work? Users should authenticate using personal certificates into MOSS 2010 There would be a certain part of MOSS that would be related to my custom application This application should only authorize certain users via AD FS - I guess these users should have a certain security claim attached to them This application should manage users (that have access to this app) with additional (app specific) security claims related to this application (as additional application level authorization rights for individual application parts) This application should use custom SQL 2008 DB heavily with its own data This application should have the possibility to integrate with external systems as well (Exchange for instance to inject calendar entries, ERP systems etc) This application should be able to export its data (from its DB) to files. I don't know if it's possible, but it would be nice if the app could add these files to MOSS and attach authorization info to them so only users with sufficient rights would be able to view/open these files. Why Asp.net MVC then? I'm very well versed in Asp.net MVC (also with the latest version) and I haven't done anything on Sharepoint since version 2003 (which doesn't do me no good or prepare me for the latest version in any way shape or form). This project will most probably be a death march project so I would rather write my application as a UI rich Asp.net MVC application and somehow integrate it into MOSS. But not only via a link, because I would like to at least share credentials, so users wouldn't need to re-login when accessing my app. Using Asp.net MVC I would at least have the possibility to finish on time or be less death marching. Is this at all possible? Questions Is it possible to integrate Asp.net MVC into MOSS as described above? If integration is not possible, would it be possible to create a completely MOSS based application that would work as described? Which parts of MOSS 2010 should I use to accomplish what I need?

Debugging with Fiddler the message on save is (amongst others): EntityActions.nil? b9http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/Arrays^HasMemberChanges?^Id?^ Operation?Update I assume that this says only: hey! the dbms should do an update on this record, AND nothing more! Is that right?! • Windows Service HTTPListener Memory Issue

  Hi all, Im a complete novice to the "best practices" etc of writing in any code. I tend to just write it an if it works, why fix it. Well, this way of working is landing me in some hot water. I am writing a simple windows service to server a single webpage. (This service will be incorperated in to another project which monitors the services and some folders on a group of servers.) My problem is that whenever a request is recieved, the memory usage jumps up by a few K per request and keeps qoing up on every request. Now ive found that by putting GC.Collect in the mix it stops at a certain number but im sure its not meant to be used this way. I was wondering if i am missing something or not doing something i should to free up memory. • Offline backup synchronization

  There is a Central Server running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 and there are 7 client machines situated in various places and has XP Pro & SQL Server 2005 installed in all of them. They are not interconnected so they are physically seperate. One person goes to each of these centers maybe twice a month and takes the backup (Full database consisting of mdf and ldf files) with a pen drive and brings it to the Central server which contains the central database holding same schema as all the other client databases. I need to synchronize each backup database (belonging to different centers) one by one to update the existing data or inserting new data in the central database . The solution i got was Replication. The pendrive is brought to central server consisting of 7 instances of the databases and then the databases is attached to the central server one by one to the same SQL Server where the central database exists. Then my idea was to replicate the backup database one by one i.e using single subscription (Central Database) and multiple publication ( i.e 7 instances of databases in my case) toplogy by performing replication locally (i.e in the same machine). So i tried to develop a UI in C# .Net to programatically run the Transactional Replication with push subscription using RMO Programming (which is incomplete as of now because there is no point in developing when you already know it is not the solution). Transactional Replication can either be set to initialize with a snapshot or without a snapshot. If i go for the first option i.e with a snapshot , the data whatever is present in Central Database is overwritten by the new data . So the data present initially in the central database is lost. If i try to initialize without snapshot , no data (the data already has the updated and new data) will be sent from the backup database to server. The replication will work in a scenario where any incremental changes is done only after you set the replication . So the initial data whatever was present in the backup database when setting up the replication will not be replicated when running the snapshot agent for the first time to synchronize. Only changes in the backup database thereafter will be reflected to the central database .(Remember I am not going to insert new data or make any changes to the backup database after i attach it to the Central Server. ) So this solution is not feasible. I want a solution for synchronizing from one client database to central database present in the same machine using C#.NET. If you can provide me small example maybe with two databases(with same schema) DB1(Client) to DB2(Server) consisting of one or two tables it will be very helpful. The synchronization is not bidirectional.I want to only update existing data or insert new data from DB1 to DB2 (DB2 may contain some data initially). Thanks and Regards Pavan

• VB6 app not executing as scheduled task unless user is logged on

  Hi Would greatly apprechiate some help on this one! It may be a tricky one. :) Problem I have an VB6 application which is set up as scheduled task. It starts every time, but when executing CreateObject it fails if user is not logged on to computer. I am looking for information on what could cause this. Primary suspicion is that some Windows API fails. Key points Behaviour confirmed on Windows 2000, 2003, 2008 and Vista. The application executes as user X at scheduled time, executed by Windows Task Scheduler. It executes every time. Application does start! -- If user X is logged on via RDP it runs perfectly. (Note that user doesn't need to be connected, only logged on) -- If user X is not logged on to computer the application fails. Failure point Application fails when using CreateObject() to instansiate a DCOM object which is also part of the application. The DCOM objects declare .dll-references at startup (globally/on top of .bas-file) and run a small startup function. Failure must be during startup, possibly in one of the .dll-declarations. Thoughts After some Googling my initial suspicion was directed at MAPI. From what I could see MAPI required user to be logged on. The application has MAPI references. But even with all MAPI references removed it still does not work. What is the difference if an user is logged on? Registry mapping? Environment? explorer.exe is running. Isn't the user logged on when application executes as the user? What info would help? A definitive answer would be truly great. Any information regarding any VB6 feature/Windows API that could act differently depending on wether user is logged on or not would definitively help. Similar experiences may lead me in the right direction. Tips on debuggin this. Thanks! :)

  I added a helpAbout menu item to my mfc app. I decided to make the ddlg derive from CDHTMLDialog. I override the OnInitDialog() method in my derived class and the first thing I do is call the parent's OnInitDialog() method. I then put in code that sets the title. On some machines this works fine, but on others it crashes in the call to CDHtmlDialog::OnInitDialog() - Trying to read a null pointer. the call stack has nothing useful - it is in mfc90.dll Is this a potential problem with mismatches of mfc/win32 dlls? It works on my vista machines but crashes on a win2003 server box. • Query an XmlDocument without getting a 'Namespace prefix is not defined' problem

  I've got an Xml document that both defines and references some namespaces. I load it into an XmlDocument object and to the best of my knowledge I create a XmlNamespaceManager object with which to query Xpath against. Problem is I'm getting XPath exceptions that the namespace "my" is not defined. How do I get the namespace manager to see that the namespaces I am referencing are already defined. Or rather how do I get the namespace definitions from the document to the namespace manager. Furthermore tt strikes me as strange that you have to provide a namespace manager to the document which you create from the documents nametable in the first place. Even if you need to hardcode manual namespaces why can't you add them directly to the document. Why do you always have to pass this namespace manager with every single query? What can't XmlDocument just know? • Query Results Not Expected

  I've been a CF developer for 15 years and I've never run into anything this strange or frustrating. I've pulled my hair out for hours, googled, abstracted, simplified, prayed and done it all in reverse. Can you help me? A cffunction takes one string argument and from that string I build an array of "phrases" to run a query with, attempting to match a location name in my database. For example, the string "the republic of boulder" would produce the array: ["the","republic","of","boulder","the republic","the republic of","the republic of boulder","republic of","republic of boulder","of boulder"]. Another cffunction uses the aforementioned cffunction and runs a cfquery. A query based on the previously given example would be... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','the republic of','republic','republic of','republic of boulder','of','of boulder','boulder') This returns 2 records... locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' 68 - 'Boulder' - NULL This is good. Works fine and dandy. HOWEVER... if the string is changed to "the republic", resulting in the phrases array ["the","republic","the republic"] which is then used to produce the query... select locationid, locationname, locationaliasname from vwLocationsWithAlias where LocationName in ('the','the republic','republic') or LocationAliasName in ('the','the republic','republic') This returns 0 records. Say what?! OK, just to make sure I'm not involuntarily HIGH I run that very same query in my SQL console against the same database in the cf datasource. 1 RECORD! locationid - locationname - locationalias 99 - 'Boulder' - 'the republic' I can even hard-code that sql within the same cffunction and get that one result, but never from the dynamically generated SQL. I can get my location phrases from another cffunction of a different name that returns hard-coded array values and those work, but never if the array is dynamically built. I've tried removing cfqueryparams, triple-checking my datatypes, datasource setups, etc., etc., etc. NO DICE WTF!? Is this an obscure bug? Am I losing my mind? I've tried everything I can think of and others (including Ray Camden) can think of. • Reliable and fast way to convert a zillion ODT files in PDF?

  I need to pre-produce a million or two PDF files from a simple template (a few pages and tables) with embedded fonts. Usually, I would stay low level in a case like this, and compose everything with a library like ReportLab, but I joined late in the project. Currently, I have a template.odt and use markers in the content.xml files to fill with data from a DB. I can smoothly create the ODT files, they always look rigth. For the ODT to PDF conversion, I'm using openoffice in server mode (and PyODConverter w/ named pipe), but it's not very reliable: in a batch of documents, there is eventually a point after which all the processed files are converted into garbage (wrong fonts and letters sprawled all over the page). Problem is not predictably reproducible (does not depend on the data), happens in OOo 2.3 and 3.2, in Ubuntu, XP, Server 2003 and Windows 7. My Heisenbug detector is ticking. I tried to reduce the size of batches and restarting OOo after each one; still, a small percentage of the documents are messed up. Of course I'll write about this on the Ooo mailing lists, but in the meanwhile, I have a delivery and lost too much time already. Where do I go? Completely avoid the ODT format and go for another template system. Suggestions? Anything that takes a few seconds to run is way too slow. OOo takes around a second and it sums to 15 days of processing time. I had to write a program for clustering the jobs over several clients. Keep the format but go for another tool/program for the conversion. Which one? There are many apps in the shareware or commercial repositories for windows, but trying each one is a daunting task. Some are too slow, some cannot be run in batch without buying it first, some cannot work from command line, etc. Open source tools tend not to reinvent the wheel and often depend on openoffice. Converting to an intermediate .DOC format could help to avoid the OOo bug, but it would double the processing time and complicate a task that is already too hairy. Try to produce the PDFs twice and compare them, discarding the whole batch if there's something wrong. Although the documents look equal, I know of no way to compare the binary content. Restart OOo after processing each document. it would take a lot more time to produce them it would lower the percentage of the wrong files, and make it very hard to identify them. Go for ReportLab and recreate the pages programmatically. This is the approach I'm going to try in a few minutes. Learn to properly format bulleted lists Thanks a lot.

• Execute SQL SP in Excel VBA

  HI I am having problem with getting all the columns back when i execute following code in excel vba. I only get 6 out of 23 columns back. Connection, command etc works fine (i can see exec command in the SQL Profiler), data headers are created for all 23 columns but i only get data for 6 column. Side Note: it's not prod level code, have missed out error handling on purpose, sp works fine in SQL management studio, ASP.Net, C# win form app, it is for Excel 2003 connecting to SQL 2008. • Issue with RegConnectRegistry connecting to 64 bit machines

  I'm seeing a weird thing when connecting to the performance registry on 64 bit editions of Windows. The whole program stalls and callstacks becomes unreadable. After a long timeout, the connection attempts aborts and everything goes back to normal. The only solution is to make sure that only one thread at the time queries the remote registry, unless the remote machine is a 32 bit Windows XP, 2003, 2000 , then you can use as many threads as you like. Have anyone a technical explanation why this might be happening ? I've spent 2-3 days searching the web without coming up with anything. Here is a test program, run it first with one thread (connecting to a 64 bit Windows), then remove the comment in tmain and run it with 4 threads. Running it with one thread works as expected, running with 4, returns ERROR_BUSY (dwRet == 170) after stalling for a while. Seems UAC is getting in my way. Is there something I can do with the SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES or CreateProcess, or is there something I can do with CreateProcessAsUser or impersonation to ensure that a network socket on a service is available to logged-in users on the system (note, this app is for mass deployment, I don't have access to user credentials, and require the user elevate their privileges to install a service on Vista/Win7)

• Mysterious constraints problem with SQL Server 2000

  Hi all I'm getting the following error from a VB NET web application written in VS 2003, on framework 1.1. The web app is running on Windows Server 2000, IIS 5, and is reading from a SQL server 2000 database running on the same machine. System.Data.ConstraintException: Failed to enable constraints. The system runs fine when volume is low, but when the number of requests becomes high, the system starts rejecting incoming requests with the above exception message. Once the problem appears, very few requests actually make it through and get processed normally, about 2 in every 30. The vast majority of requests fail, until a SQL Server restart or IIS reset is performed. The system then start processing requests normally, and after some time it starts throwing the same error. The error occurs when a data adapter runs the Fill() method against a SELECT statement, to populate a strongly-typed dataset. It appears that the dataset does not like the data it is given and throws this exception. This error occurs on various SELECT statements, acting on different tables. I have regenerated the dataset and checked the relevant constraints, as well as the table from which the data is read. Both the dataset definition and the data in the table are fine. Admittedly, the hardware running both the web app and SQL Server 2000 is seriously outdated, considering the numbers of incoming requests it currently receives. The amount of RAM consumed by SQL Server is dynamically allocated, and at peak times SQL Server can consume up to 2.8 GB out of a total of 3.5 GB on the server. At first I suspected some sort of index or database corruption, but after running DBCC CHECKDB, no errors were found in the database. So now I'm wondering whether this error is a result of the hardware limitations of the system. Is it possible for SQL Server to somehow mess up the data it's supposed to pass to the dataset, resulting in constraint violation due to, say, data type/length mismatch? I tried accessing the RowError messages of the data rows in the retrieved dataset tables but I kept getting empty strings. I know that HasErrors = true for the datatables in question. I have not set the EnableConstraints = false, and I don't want to do that. Thanks in advance. Ray

• Emails sent using Flex app are delayed

  I'm currently building an application in Flex that utilizes SMTP Mailer to automatically send out emails to the user when a particular condition is satisfied. The application checks this condition every 30 seconds. The condition is satisfied based on new records being returned from a database table. The problem is as follows: When the condition is first satisfied, the email is delivered to the user with no issues. The second time the condition is satisfied, the email is not delivered. In the smtp logs, the delivery attempt appears to get hung up on the following line: 354 Start mail input; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF> No error codes are present in the smtp logs, but I do trace the following event from the SMTP Mailer class: [Event type="mailError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2] When the condition is satisfied a third time, the email that was not delivered when the condition was satisfied the previous time is now delivered, along with the email for this instance. This pattern then repeats itself, with the next email not being sent followed by two emails being sent simulatneously when the condition is met again. The smtp server being used is Windows 2003, on an internal network. The email is being sent to an outlook account hosted on an exchange server that is also on this internal network. • Exporting classes containing std:: objects (vector, map, etc) from a dll

  I'm trying to export classes from a DLL that contain objects such as std::vectors and std::stings - the whole class is declared as dll export through: class DLL_EXPORT FontManager { The problem is that for members of the complex types I get this warning: warning C4251: 'FontManager::m__fonts' : class 'std::map<_Kty,_Ty' needs to have dll-interface to be used by clients of class 'FontManager' with [ _Kty=std::string, _Ty=tFontInfoRef ] I'm able to remove some of the warnings by putting the following forward class declaration before them even though I'm not changing the type of the member variables themselves: template class DLL_EXPORT std::allocator<tCharGlyphProviderRef>; template class DLL_EXPORT std::vector<tCharGlyphProviderRef,std::allocator<tCharGlyphProviderRef> >; std::vector<tCharGlyphProviderRef> m_glyphProviders; Looks like the forward declaration "injects" the DLL_EXPORT for when the member is compiled but is it safe? Does it realy change anything when the client compiles this header and uses the std container on his side? Will it make all future uses of such a container DLL_EXPORT (and possibly not inline?)? And does it really solve the problem that the warning tries to warn about? Is this warning anything I should be worried about or would it be best to disable it in the scope of these constructs? The clients and the dll will always be built using the same set of libraries and compilers and those are header only classes... I'm using Visual Studio 2003 with the standard STD library. ---- Update ---- I'd like to target you more though as I see the answers are general and here we're talking about std containers and types (such as std::string) - maybe the question really is: Can we disable the warning for standard containers and types available to both the client and the dll through the same library headers and treat them just as we'd treat an int or any other built-in type? (It does seem to work correctly on my side.) If so would should be the conditions under which we can do this? Or should maybe using such containers be prohibited or at least ultra care taken to make sure no assignment operators, copy constructors etc will get inlined into the dll client? In general I'd like to know if you feel designing a dll interface having such objects (and for example using them to return stuff to the client as return value types) is a good idea or not and why - I'd like to have a "high level" interface to this functionality... maybe the best solution is what Neil Butterworth suggested - creating a static library?

• Error when restoring SSAS cube: MemberKeyesUnique element at line xxx cannot appear under (...)/Hier

  Hi, I'm getting this error when trying to restore an SSAS database from a backup: The ddl2:MemberKeysUnique element at line 63, column 4862 (namespace http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine/2) cannot appear under Load/ObjectDefinition/Dimension/Hierarchies/Hierarchy. Google hasn't turned up any helpful solutions. (a lot of people found that installing SP2 made the error go away but this has always previously worked in our environment) I don't really understand what the error means. Can somebody interpret or suggest a fix? Thanks, Phil
