Why is the modal dialog in MFC actually internally modeless?

This question arose in my miind after reading this article: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/3911/The-singular-non-modality-of-MFC-modal-dialogs. He mentions that the modal dialog in MFC is not strictly modal, but implemented as a modeless dialog(internally) with bells and whistles to make it behave as a modal one. Specifically, he says: The MFC command routing mechanism uses a combination of message maps and virtual functions to achieve what it does and a true modal dialog will totally wreck this mechanism because then the modal message loop is controlled outside the scope of the MFC command routing machinery Could anyone elucidate this statement? An example of what would have gone wrong if they had tried to implement a truly modal dialog would greatly clear things up.

Stuck on an ASP.NET/WCF WSDL Parsing Error

I have a WCF Web Service that my ASP.NET app uses. It has been working fine for quite some time. I just added in a Dev Express Grid (and the Dev Express DLLs) and a new page that uses them and now I am getting parsing errors on the WSDL. But the weird part is that it works fine on my machine but fails on the web server machine. (Both are connecting to the same web services WSDL.) Visual Studio 2008. MFC event wizard broken

OK, so it's almost a programming question - The VS2008 dialog event wizard has stopped working. Double-clicking on a button in an MFC dialog project does not fire the wizard as usual and a right-click to get to the 'Add Event Handler...' shows a dialog with no message types. Further to this the MFC message mapping and virtual class listing that generally appears in the properties window (Alt + Enter) is now empty. Has anyone elese seen this and if so, how'd they fix it? I have 'repaired' my VS08 installation ... Thx++ Jerry

Performance of concurrent software on multicore processors

Recently I have often read that, since the trend is to build processors with multiple cores, it will be increasingly important to have programming languages that support concurrent programming in order to better exploit the parallelism offered by these processors. In this respect, certain programming paradigms or models are considered well-suited for writing robust concurrent software: Functional programming languages, e.g. Haskell, Scala, etc. The actor model: Erlang, but also available for Scala / Java (Akka), C++ (Theron, Casablanca, ...), and other programming languages. My questions: What is the state of the art regarding the development of concurrent applications (e.g. using multi-threading) using the above languages / models? Is this area still being explored or are there well-established practices already? Will it be more complex to program applications with a higher level of concurrency, or is it just a matter of learning new paradigms and practices? How does the performance of highly concurrent software compare to the performance of more traditional software when executed on multiple core processors? For example, has anyone implemented a desktop application using C++ / Theron, or Java / Akka? Was there a boost in performance on a multiple core processor due to higher parallelism?

I have an either/or type of situation in a many-to-many relationship I'm trying to model. So I have these tables: Message ---- *MessageID MessageText Employee ---- *EmployeeID EmployeeName Team ---- *TeamID TeamName MessageTarget ---- MessageID EmployeeID (nullable) TeamID (nullable) So, a Message can have either a list of Employees, or a list of Teams as a MessageTarget. Is the MessageTarget table I have above the best way to implement this relationship? What constraints can I place on the MessageTarget effectively? How should I create a primary key on MessageTarget table?

Efficiency concerning thread granularity

Lately, I've been thinking of ways to use multithreading to improve the speed of different parts of a game engine. What confuses me is the appropriate granularity of threads, especially when dealing with single-instruction-multiple-data (SIMD) tasks. Let's use line-of-sight detection as an example. Each AI actor must be able to detect objects of interest around them and mark them. There are three basic ways to go about this with multithreading: Don't use threading at all. Create a thread for each actor. Create a thread for each actor-object combination. Option 1 is obviously going to be the least efficient method. However, choosing between the next two options is more difficult. Only using one thread per actor is still running through every object in series instead of in parallel. However, are CPU's able to create and join threads in the granularity posed in Option 3 efficiently? It seems like that many calls to the OS could be really slow, and varying enormously between different hardware.

Disable a style in VCL application

I am adding the a VCL style into my application but am also giving the users an option to turn this off but I cannot figure out how to do this globally at runtime. Setting "TStyleManager.AutoDiscoverStyleResources := false" almost works but it pops up with an error message saying "Style {style set} not found" but after dismissing the message does exactly what I want. This code I would expect to work but does not... if (not ParamObj.UseDarkStyle) then begin //TStyleManager.AutoDiscoverStyleResources := false; TStyleManager.SetStyle(TStyleManager.SystemStyle); end; I also tried (originally) TStyleManager.TrySetStyle('Windows'); but this also does not work. I have tried this both sides of "Application.Initialize;" with no difference What am I missing? Thanks in advance, Martin

jQuery validator and a custom rule that uses AJAX

Hi, I read your reply regarding the jQuery validator where you outline a method to check a username against a value in a database. Ive tried implementing this method but no matter what is returned from the PHP file I always get the message that the username is already taken. MQ EOL Data conversion

we are sending data trough MQ from a z/OS/CICS system to an AS400. Original encoding of the message is CCSID 500 with a MQSTR Format. The client application is getting the message with the CONVERT option and CCSID 819. Data is almost converted correctly except for the end of line caracter. Any idea? The z/OS is sending 0D (CR) as end of line caracter. If they had 0D+0A (CR+LF), CCSID automatically change from 500 to 437, and the end of line still ain't right on the client side.

Funny characters in my db

My web app is breaking when I try edit a certain content type and I'm pretty sure it is because of some weird characters in my database. So when I do: SELECT body FROM message WHERE id = 666 it returns: <p>â¢ <span></span></p><p><br /></p><p><em><strong>NOTE:</strong> Please remember to use your to participate in the discussion.</em></p> However when I try to count how many documents have those characters postgres complains: foo_450_prod=# SELECT COUNT(*) FROM message WHERE body LIKE'%â¢%'; ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0xe2a225 HINT: This error can also happen if the byte sequence does not match the encodi Does anybody know what the issue is and how I can query for those funny characters? Deep in the trenches of ODI development I raised my head above the parapet to read a few odds and ends and then think why don’t they know this? Such as this article here – in the past customers (see forum) were told to use a staging route which has a big overhead for large files. This KM is an example of the great extensibility capabilities of ODI, its quite simple, just a new KM that; improves the out of the box experience – just build the mapping and the appropriate KM is used improves out of the box performance for file to file data movement. This improvement for out of the box handling for File to File data integration cases (from the 11.1.1.5.2 companion CD and on) dramatically speeds up the file integration handling. In the past I had seem some consultants write perl versions of the file to file integration case, now Oracle ships this KM to fill the gap. You can find the documentation for the IKM here. The KM uses pure java to perform the integration, using java.io classes to read and write the file in a pipe – it uses java threading in order to super-charge the file processing, and can process several source files at once when the datastore's resource name contains a wildcard. This is a big step for regular file processing on the way to super-charging big data files using Hadoop – the KM works with the lightweight agent and regular filesystems. So in my design below transforming a bunch of files, by default the IKM File to File (Java) knowledge module was assigned. I pointed the KM at my JDK (since the KM generates and compiles java), and I also increased the thread count to 2, to take advantage of my 2 processors. For my illustration I transformed (can also filter if desired) and moved about 1.3Gb with 2 threads in 140 seconds (with a single thread it took 220 seconds) - by no means was this on any super computer by the way. The great thing here is that it worked well out of the box from the design to the execution without any funky configuration, plus, and a big plus it was much faster than before, So if you are doing any file to file transformations, check it out!

Joomla Template Parameters and params.ini

I am using wamp and creating a Joomla template with changeable parameters. initially the message is The parameter file \templates\ssc_2010\params.ini is writable! once I make changes everything works as expected, except now i get the message: The parameter file \templates\ssc_2010\params.ini is unwritable! One solution is to brows to the directory, right click the file, select properties, and uncheck read-only. Again the file is writable but once I modify the parameters again it becomes read only again. I'm quite lazy and would like to prevent this from happening again, I've notice this happening in past projects, but now I have to work a lot with parameters so it becomes quite boring doing manual labor like that :P

Now I need to send in the body part, a part of a stylesheet (for instance the area from A1:B20). This area has colors, bold font. How does SharePoint identify a new email to a Discussion Board as belonging to a thread?

Pretty much as the title really, I want to be able to create a new thread from a reply to an old thread, perhaps by adding a "New Thread: " or similar to the title of the message, but of course Sharepoint is using some other characteristics of the message to recognise messages as replies to other messages and I can't find what those are. Does anyone know? Is it just using the In-Reply-To header? Alternatively, is there already a standard way to get the outcome I'm looking for, of a new discussion thread regardless of whether the initial email is a reply to a current discussion or not?

Mule Performing a string manipulation

What is the best way to perform a string manipulation. Can I mark an Email as "High Importance" for Outlook using System.Net.Mail?

Part of the application I'm working on for my client involves sending emails for events. Sometimes these are highly important. My client, and most of my client's clients, use Outlook, which has the ability to mark a mail message as High Importance. Now, I know it is callous to assume that all end users will be using the same interface, sp I am not. But considering you can send email from Outlook as High Importance even if the target is not necessarily reading through Outlook, that means that there is basically some data stored... somehow... that lets Outlook know if a particular message was assigned as High Importance. That's my interpretation, at least. The application currently uses System.Net.Mail to send out emails, using System.Net.Mail.MailMessages for writing them and System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient to send them. Is it possible to set this "High Importance" setting with System.Net.Mail's abilities? If not, is there any assembly available which can configure this setting?

Can I use android.os.* libraries in a standalone project?

I'm trying to develop an external library (not sure if that's the right term) to provide prepackaged functionality in Android projects. Working in Eclipse, I've added the appropriate android.jar file to the build path, and everything is happy both while editing and upon compilation. However, when I use Android's Handler and Message classes (android.os.Handler, android.os.Message) for inter-thread communication, I get exceptions unless I'm running within an Android app, on the emulator or a device. I can no longer test my library in a "standalone" way without having to go through a running Android target. Is there any way for me to include these two Android classes and still be able to test my library standalone? Do I need to have the Android source available? Or would it require some sort of conditional compilation hand-waving?

Communication between java server and matlab client

I'd like to establish a server(Java)/client (Matlab) communication using socket. They can send messages to each other. An example shows how to do this in Java server and Java client, http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/sockets/clientServer.html. When I try to rewrite the client part in Matlab, I only can get the first message that the Java server sends and display it in the Matlab command window. When I type a message in the Matlab command window, I can't pass it to the Java Server. Jave code: kkSocket = new Socket("localhost", 3434); Matlab equivalent: kkSocket = Socket('localhost', 3434); Java code for client: out = new PrintWriter(kkSocket.getOutputStream(), true); in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(kkSocket.getInputStream())); What would be a Matlab equivalent for this? An update question !

Hi , Here's the problem I'm facing : trying to do my own application update I download the update apk from a web server on the sd card and then I launch the Package Installer with the downloading path ( while the old application is running) . So far after the package installer starts and the user agrees to install the application I get the following message " MyApp Could not be installed on this phone" and in the logcat then following message is printed : "No package identifier when getting value for resource number 0x00000000" . I could not find a reason for this behaviour , so please if there is something that I'm missing do point it to me !

JAXB appending unneeded namespace declarations to tags

I'm implementing a homebrew subprotocol of XMPP, and i'm using combination of StAX and JAXB for parsing/marshalling mesages. And when I marshall a message I end up with loads of unneded namespace declarations: <ns2:auth xmlns:ns2="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:ilf-auth" xmlns:ns4="ilf:iq:experiment:power" xmlns:ns3="ilf:iq:experiment:init" xmlns:ns5="ilf:iq:experiment:values" xmlns:ns6="ilf:iq:experiment:result" xmlns:ns7="ilf:iq:experiment:stop" xmlns:ns8="ilf:iq:experiment:end"> compton@ilf</ns2:auth> instead of: <ns:auth xmlns:ns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:ilf-auth>compton@ilf</ns:auth> Is there any way to turn that of? All these namespaces are used in different messages that get marshalled/unmarshalled by JAXB, but every message uses one namespace. PS. I am not an XML expert please dont rant me if I did some stupid mistake ;)

timing of reads from serial port on windows

I'm trying to implement a protocol over serial port on a windows(xp) machine. The problem is that message synchronization in the protocol is done via a gap in the messages, i.e., x millisecond gap between sent bytes signifies a new message. Now, I don't know if it is even possible to accurately detect this gap. I'm using win32/serport.h api to read in one of the many threads of our server. Data from the serial port gets buffered, so if there is enough (and there will be enough) latency in our software, I will get multiple messages from the port buffer in one sequence of reads. Is there a way of reading from the serial port, so that I would detect gaps in when particular bytes were received?
