Being specific to our current product, it has not UI and will run in background. Security is the first thing to take into account. • Advanced Search Stored procedure

  So I am working on an MVC ASP.NET web application which centers around lots of data and data manipulation. PROBLEM OVERVIEW: We have an advanced search with 25 different filter criteria. I am using a stored procedure for this search. The stored procedure takes in parameters, filter for specific objects, and calculates return data from those objects. It queries large tables 14 millions records on some table, filtering and temp tables helped alleviate some of the bottle necks for those queries. ISSUE: The stored procedure used to take 1 min to run, which creates a timeout returning 0 results to the browser. I rewrote the procedure and got it down to 21 secs so the timeout does not occur. This ONLY occurs this slow the FIRST time the search is run, after that it takes like 5 secs. I am wondering should I take a different approach to this problem, should I worry about this type of performance issue if it does not timeout?

• Dynamically switching the theme in Orchard

  It may sound a little puzzling at first, but in Orchard CMS, more than one theme can be active at any given time. The reason for that is that we have an extensibility point that allows a module (or a theme) to participate in the choice of the theme to use, for each request. The motivation for building the theme engine this way was to enable developers to switch themes based on arbitrary criteria, such as user preferences or the user agent (if you want to serve a mobile theme for phones for example). The choice is made between the active themes, which is why there is a difference between the default theme and the active themes. In order to have a say in the choice of the theme, all you have to do is implement IThemeSelector. That interface is quite simple as it only has one method, GetTheme, that takes the current RequestContext and returns a ThemeSelectorResult or null if the implementation of the interface does not want to participate in the current request (we'll see an example in a moment). ThemeSelectorResult itself is just a ThemeName string property and an integer Priority. We're using a priority so that an arbitrary number of implementations of IThemeSelector can contribute to the choice of a theme. If you look for existing implementations of the interface in Orchard, you'll find four: AdminThemeSelector: selects the TheAdmin theme with a very high priority (100) if the current request is for a page that is part of the admin. Otherwise, null is returned, which enables other implementations to choose the theme. PreviewThemeSelector: selects the preview theme if there is one, with a high priority (90), and null otherwise. This enables administrators to view the site under a different theme while everybody else continues to see the current default theme. SiteThemeSelector: this is the implementation that is doing what you expect most of the time, which is to get the current theme from site settings and set it with a priority of –5. SafeModeThemeSelector: this is the fallback implementation, which should almost never win. It sets the theme as the safe mode theme, which has no style and just uses the default templates for everything. The priority is very low (-100). While this extensibility mechanism is great to have, I wanted to bring that level of choice into the hands of the site administrator rather than just developers. In order to achieve that, I built the Vandelay Theme Picker module. The module provides administration UI to create rules for theme selection. It provides its own extensibility point (the IThemeSelectionRule interface) and one implementation of a rule: UserAgentThemeSelectorRule. This rule gets the current user agent from the context and tries to match it with a regular expression that the administrator can configure in the admin UI. You can for example configure a rule with a regular expression that matches IE6 and serve a different subtheme where the stylesheet has been tweaked for such an antique browser. Another possible configuration is to detect mobile devices from their agent string and serve the mobile theme. All those operations can be done with this module entirely from the admin UI, without writing a line of code. The module also offers the administrator the opportunity to inject a link into the front-end in a specific zone and with a specific position that enables the user to switch to the default theme if he wishes to. This is especially useful for sites that use a mobile theme but still want to allow users to use the full desktop site. While the module is nice and flexible, it may be overkill. On my own personal blog, I have only two active themes: the desktop theme and the mobile theme. I'm fine with going into code to change the criteria on which to switch the theme, so I'm not using my own Theme Picker module. Instead, I made the mobile theme a theme with code (in other words there is a csproj file in the theme). What's interesting here is that it's the theme that selects itself here, based on its own criteria. This should give you a good panorama of what's possible in terms of dynamic theme selection in Orchard. I hope you find some fun uses for it. • Messaging technologies between applications ?

  Recently, I had to create a program to send messages between two winforms executable. I used a tool with simple built-in functionalities to prevent having to figure out all the ins and outs of this vast quantity of protocols that exist. But now, I'm ready to learn more about the internals difference between each of theses protocols. I googled a couple of them but it would be greatly appreciate to have a good reference book that gives me a clean idea of how each protocol works and what are the pros and cons in a couple of context. Here is a list of nice protocols that I found: Shared memory TCP List item Named Pipe File Mapping Mailslots MSMQ (Microsoft Queue Solution) WCF I know that all of these protocols are not specific to a language, it would be nice if example could be in .net. • Student wanting to go to a developer conference

  I'm a 21 year old student in my last year of University, and I am looking for information about developer conferences. I live in Derby (United Kingdom) and there's not (As far as I know) many conferences local to where I live. I do have a car at my disposal so travelling shouldn't be a problem. I was hoping somebody could recommend the best way to go about finding and attending a conference, which one is probably the best to go to and what kind of things I'd need to know and take beforehand. I've done a couple of Google searches and searched SO itself but nothing specific to my needs was found. Note: I'm primarily a C# developer using WPF and WinForms but I'm open to pretty much anything.

• Swept AABB vs Line Segment 2D

  I've really exhausted as much as Google has to give, I've spent a solid week googling every combination of words for an "AABBvsLine sweep", downloaded countless collision demos, dissected SAT intersection examples and an AABBvsAABB sweep trying to figure out how to approach this. I've not found a single thing covering this specific pairing. Can anyone shed any light on how to get the hit time of a swept AABB vs a Line segment in 2D? I'm still getting familiar with the SAT but I do know how to implement it to a degree, I'm just not sure how to extract the hit time from the velocity in the non axis aligned separating axes for the sweep. I really would appreciate anything at the moment, some code or even some helpful links, I'm at my wits end!

• Task ownership with Wordpress - CSS - Designer or Developer?

  We have a dispute regarding who owns which tasks when it comes to the CSS on our live site. Our designer argues that he is not responsible to log-in to word press and modify the css or use ftp for any changes because that's not his job description while developer argues that since it is css, it belongs to designer and that he is to update the changes to the server and then compare and correct the output. I'd like experienced people working in professional development environment to put a light on this scenario. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, or is there a separate forum for business development or project management specific questions?

• Pair programming business logic with a non-IT person

  Have you have any experience in which a non-IT person works with a programmer during the coding process? It's like pair programming, but one person is a non-IT person that knows a lot about the business, maybe a process engineer with math background who knows how things are calculated and can understand non-idiomatic, procedural code. I've found that some procedural, domain-specific languages like PL/SQL are quite understandable by non-IT engineers. These person end up being co-authors of the code and guarantee the correctness of formulas, factors etc. I've found this kind of pair programming quite productive, this kind of engineer user feel they are also "owners" and "authors" of the code and help minimize misunderstanding in the communication process. They even help design the test cases. Is this practice common ? Does it have a name ? Have you had similar experiences ?

• How and when to use UNIT testing properly

  I am an iOS developer. I have read about unit testing and how it is used to test specific pieces of your code. A very quick example has to do with processing JSON data onto a database. The unit test reads a file from the project bundle and executes the method that is in charge of processing JSON data. But I dont get how this is different from actually running the app and testing with the server. So my question might be a bit general, but I honestly dont understand the proper use of unit testing, or even how it is useful; I hope the experienced programmers that surf around StackOverflow can help me. Any help is very much appreciated!

• Is this memory compatible with this motherboard???

  Hi, I have a Foxconn P35AP-S as seen here. I need to get some more RAM since I only have 1 2GB stick. The current one is 1066MHz. I would like to get the memory situated here: www.scan.co.uk/Products/6GB-(3x2GB)-Corsair-XMS3-Classic-DDR3-PC3-10666-(1333)-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-7-7-7-20-165V memory. It is 6GB of Corair 1333MHz memory. According to the motherboard website it is able to take 1333MHz, but it says oc** next to it (which means achieved when overclocked). So my question is: are they still compatible without overclocking, or does the motherboard require overclocking to be compatible? If it requires overclocking (which I have no idea how to do) can anyone recommend any other memory (in the region of 6GB) which the motherboard is compatible with? I'd rather it were from Scan, but to be honest it doesnt need to be. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Richard Edit: I just realised that the motherboard has a maximum capacity of 4GB of RAM. Scrap the RAM given above, I'd like to go for something like that but only 4GB. Edit: Scrap that last edit - its only if I go for DDR3 that I need to take this into account. DDR2 is a maximum of 8GB.

• Re-order active applications in right navigation bar

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and I want to know is there a way to re-order the item in my navigation bar. In windows 7 it is possible to group elements and re-order their position. To be more specific. When I new application is started, it is added in my right navigation bar (or bottom menu for windows). Is there a way ti drag the "Chrome" icon for example, and to move it below to Firefox one? Now, if i try to drag a icon, the all icons move.

  Last night I received my computer that was ordered with my tax return money.  Here are the specs of my old computer: - Pentium 4 Processor - 3-4 GB RAM - ~256 GB HDD space (2 drives) - nVidia card (AGP 8x) Sorry I can't be more specific, my memory is gone :p  Here are the new computer specs (mostly): - 2.8ghz Pentium i7 quadcore - 6 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD space (1 drive) - 1 GB Radeon card (PCI-X) I also got a new monitor (22" Asus with HDMI) so will be using my 19" widescreen as a secondary monitor. If I remember I'll hop on here and post the specifics later on...

• What can Haskell's type system do that Java's can't?

  I was talking to a friend about the differences between the type systems of Haskell and Java. He asked me what Haskell's could do that Java's couldn't, and I realized that I didn't know. After thinking for a while, I came up with a very short list of minor differences. Not being heavy into type theory, I'm left wondering whether they're formally equivalent. To try and keep this from becoming a subjective question, I'm asking: what are the major, non-syntactical differences between their type systems? I realize some things are easier/harder in one than in the other, and I'm not interested in talking about those. And to make it more specific, let's ignore Haskell type extensions since there's so many out there that do all kinds of crazy/cool stuff.

• Making profit - Adsense contains too many stopwords

  I was thinking of using Adsense, but after I've read about the stopwords policy... Too many words are banned: "a**, s**t, id**t, a****le, bu****it," etc.. That generally means that I cannot use Adsense, unless I edit my posts. How else would I go about making some profit out of my site? I don't want to use things like popups, text-link ads, I can't post many shoplinks, and my site is too small to sell adspace. For specific reasons, I also don't do videos, am not planning on starting a forum or premium content, or anything very close to what's in this sentence. The reason for this post is basically the fact that I've seen sites without any ads, huge sites, and I started to wonder: how do they make money? That was Gizmodo to be precise. Some info about my site: It's a blog where I review games and post news. There is no forum, no registration.

• Why I can't install new fonts in LibreOffice?

  I have installed a lot of fonts before, but this time things are really different. I have downloaded some True Type Font (ttf) fonts. Then paste them in the directory usr/share/fonts after that I've restarted LibreOffice writer but don't find them in the font list. No better result with PC rebooting. Then again paste them in the directory usr/share/fonts/truetype and again restarted LibreOffice writer, but still they aren't on the font list. I've tried in another way. Opened the fonts with font viewer and click on the "install" but the result is same. No improvement at all. Latest I've just found that those specific fonts are installed on my system, they present on gedit font list,but not in the LibreOffice font list. So, may be the problem is with LibreOffice. Very surprising and irritating issue indeed.

• Anti-aliasing works for debug runtime but not retail runtime

  I'm experimenting with setting various graphical settings in my Direct3D9 application, and I'm currently facing a curious problem with anti-aliasing. When running under the debug runtime, AA works as expected, and I don't have any errors or warnings. But when running under the retail runtime, the image isn't anti-aliased at all. I don't get any errors, the device creates and executes just fine. As I honestly have little idea where the problem is, I will simply give a relatively high-level overview of the architecture involved, rather than specific problematic code. Simply put, I render my 3D content to a texture, which I then render to the back buffer. Any suggestions as to where to look?

• How to go automatically from Suspend into Hibernate?

  Is it possible to make Ubuntu go into Hibernate state from Suspend, aka "Suspend Sedation"? For example, my laptop is set up to go into a Suspend once I close the lid. If then I don't use it for entire day, the battery goes flat, because even in suspend mode the hardware still consumes a small amount of power, and the battery eventually discharges. What I want is to be able to tell Ubuntu that even if it is suspended, it still needs to go into Hibernate after some hours of inactivity. Windows can do that. Ubuntu can be programmed to go into Standby or Hibernate on timer, but not both. Update: I guess I need to be more specific. What I am looking for is this: When I close the lid, the laptop is put into Suspend. Then, after a pre-determined time (even if the battery is going strong) if I still don't use it, it should put itself into a Hibernate to save battery power.

• How should I store and secure self-signed certificates?

  I'm fairly certain I shouldn't commit certificates into source control. Even if the repository is private and only authenticated coworkers (for example) have access to it. That would allow for accidental exposure (thumb drives, leaked credentials, whatever). But, how should I store and secure certificates? I don't suppose I should just plop them on the network file server, for some of the same reasons I wouldn't put them into source control, right? Is there some kind of secure certificate store that I can run? Does the Java "keystore" do that generally or is it specific for like weblogic servers or something?
