• XP, how to apply security to files, now have simple file sharing and can't access some files from other machines ?

  For a month or two now I've been using simple file sharing, for several months before that I didn't, then before that I had simple file sharing tuned on. So at the moment I don't have a security tab (on files or folders) or sharing permissions settings there too. As an example, from another machine, I can access files from 2007 but not from the summer of last year in the same folder. I can access all files on that local machine. So I think I just need to re-apply security or permissions somehow? What should I do?

  Basically I have a Ubuntu Server machine and I would like an idiot-proof solution for sending emails from my website that is also running in this same machine. My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail.   Quel EDI utilisez-vous pour coder avec Symfony ? Cela fait déjà un petit temps que je développe avec symfony, en utilisant un bon vieux Notepad++. Et je remarque que, pour le C++, je code quand même bien plus vite avec un EDI plus que correct (Visual Studio) qu'avec Notepad++. Ce n'est pas le premier que je tente d'utiliser mais c'est le seul qui me convient. J'ai déjà essayé NetBeans avec support de symfony, mais je n'ai pas vraiment réussi à le prendre en main, pas hypra intuitif, etc. Ce qui fait que je suis retourné vite fait à mon Notepad++. Mais c'était au tout début du support de symfony (6.5, il me semble). Depuis, on en est à la 6.9 (7.0 en beta), est-ce que ça vaut la peine de réessayer cet EDI ? ...

• Which framework would you recommend to use to add "social networking" components to a website?

  Given which already enables users to create and publish content, is there a service or tool which can add the standard social networking suite of components? Specifically, I'm looking quickly add functionality which allows users to friend each other, vote on/like/rank content on the site, send each other links to parts they find interesting, chat and send offline message each other. There's no specific limitation on the technology used for these components - as long as its been proven to work, and scales without issue. I'd slightly prefer a solution which is offered as a service rather than one that I have to install. Edit Some additional commenter requested clarifications - there are no restrictions that the site imposes on user identification or authentication. Feel free to assume that portion of the work is not relevant to the answers.

• Which Java web framework do you recommend for intranet webapp (not content website)?

  I'm about to start development of small purpose build intranet web application for small software vendor. It will be administration console of the server managing licenses for off-the-shelf software installed by users. There will be a few users who need to be able to sign in, issue a batch of license codes, revoke some, renew outdated, resolve issues, etc. Bear in mind that my customer requires Java for this solution. I'm seasoned Java programmer and before I used different frameworks to implement webapps, mainly Apache Struts in the past and Spring MVC recently. I was wondering what else could you recommend for such specific intranet webapp. I looked at using Google Web Toolkit (possibly with SmartGWT) Ext JS for fancy widgets in UI and REST back-end in SpringMVC SpringMVC with JQueryUI Could you please think of any piece of recommendation with regard to the choice I'm going to made?

• Is there a simple Load Balancer app for development environment on Windows?

  Does there exist a simple Load Balancer app for development on Windows? I am running a pair of JBoss 5.x instances in a cluster on a single machine. Normally , this configuration is load balanced by a nice hardware load balancer but I am wondering if there is a simple piece of software to enable load balancing in my Eclipse dev environment. Basically, for example, I want a load balancer running on port 11111 that round-robins between the 2 clustered JBoss instances on ssl ports 8443 and 8543 . (or http port if thats not possible) I know that Glassfish has a built-in load balancer but I can't use Glassfish. One idea I have is to try to setup a separate instance of Tomcat with the "balancer" web app. Im trying that now... not sure if it will work... and its a complicated setup and I wish there was something really easy.

• What is a simple deformer in which vertices deform linearly with control points?

  In my project I want to deform a complex mesh, using a simpler 'proxy' mesh. In effect, each vertex of the proxy/collision mesh will be a control point/bone, which should deform the vertices of the main mesh attached to it depending on weight, but where the weight is not dependant on the absolute distance from the control point but rather distance relative to the other affecting control points. The point of this is to preserve complex three dimensional features of the main mesh while using physics implementations which expect something far simpler, low resolution, single surface, etc. Therefore, the vertices must deform linearly with their respective weighted control points (i.e. no falloff fields or all the mesh features will end up collapsed) - as if each vertex was linked to a point on the plane created by the attached control points and deformed with it. I have tried implementing the weight computation algorithm in this paper (page 4) but it is not working as expected and I am wondering if it is really the best way to do what I want. What is the simplest way to 'skin'* an arbitrary mesh, to another arbitrary mesh? *By skin I mean I need an algorithm to determine the best control points for a vertex, and their weights.

• Build-time dependency resolving coming to Entity Framework. Now, how about those BI tools too?

  Three months ago I wrote a blog post entitled Some thoughts on Visual Studio database references and how they should be used for SQL Server BI where I shared some thoughts on a feature available to database developers in Visual Studio 2010 that I would love to see added to SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Analysis Services (SSAS) and Reporting Services (SSRS). In there I said: Over the past few weeks I have been making heavy use of the Database tools in Visual Studio 2010 and one of the features that has most impressed me has been database references.   Database references allow you to have stored procedures in your database project that refer to objects (tables, views, stored procedures etc…) that exist in other database projects and hence when you build your database project it is able to resolve those references.   It occurred to me that similar functionality would be incredibly useful for SQL Server Integration Services(SSIS), Analysis Services (SSAS) & Reporting Services (SSRS) projects. After all reports, packages and data source views are rife with references to database objects – why shouldn’t we be able to have design-time dependency checking in our BI projects the same way that database and .Net developers do? In that blog post I shared links to three Connect submissions where I requested this feature be added to SSIS, SSAS & SSRS. In addition I also submitted a request that the feature be extended to .Net projects so that any reference to a database object in a .Net assembly can be resolved at build time. That Connect submission is at [Entity FX] Use database references to constrain the EDM and overnight it received this comment from Microsoft: We have been working on this feature for a while and and will be available soon This is really good news - it improves the Microsoft developer ecosystem by ensuring invalid references to database references get caught at build time (ideally as part of a Continuous integration build) rather than run time. [Hopefully it might nip this code-first nonsense in the bud too (Ooo...way to incite flame comments :) ) ]. If you want to see this feature in action then check out a video from Teched Europe last month entitled SQL Server Developer Tools Code-named "Juneau" where it is demo'd by Lance Delano and Tim Laverty.   The point of this blog post though is not just to draw attention to this forthcoming feature for .Net developers, it is to ask you to petition Microsoft to get this feature added to SSIS/SSAS/SSRS too. After all, we already know (from the video above) that the feature is coming to this new code-name Juneau development environment plus we also know that Juneau will be the development environment for SSIS/SSAS/SSRS as well - is it really much of a stretch to expect the BI tools to have access to this great feature too? I don't think so and if you agree with me then I urge you to vote and add a comment to the Connection submissions that are requesting this feature. • Has any hobbyist attempted to make a simple VGA-graphics based operating system in machine code?

  I mean real bare bones, bare machine here(no Linux kernel, pre-existing kernel, or any bootloader). I mean honestly write the bootloading software in direct microarchitecture-specific machine opcode, host the operating system, interrupts, I/O, services, and graphical software and all hardware interaction, computation, and design entirely in binary. I know this is quite the leap here, but I was thinking to practice first in x86 assembly (not binary) 16-bit style. Any ideas?

  I'm new to Stripes. I worked on MVC frameworks like Struts 1.x and 2.x. When I started learning, its features are awesome and very lightweight; it has in-depth validations and offers easy integration with other frameworks too. There are no configurations and everything is simplified with annotations. I don't understand why Stripes is not popular compared with other Java web frameworks like Struts or JSF? I didn't find any drawbacks in Stripes. Any ideas why?

• Is there a simple, safe way to trigger a GPU lockup on a susceptible computer?

  Answers to my previous question, Ubuntu 12.04 froze, requiring powercycle. What should I look / grep for in the logs?, have led me to suspect that my computer is experiencing an intermittent GPU lockup. It has been happening about once a week, usually when I am using Chrome. Today it happened when I was creating a diagram on lucidchart I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT and dual monitors running in Xinerama mode. I am using 12.04 with the proprietary ATI driver installed. When the computer locks-up, I can still ssh in. And I would like to follow the instructions on reporting this provided at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze Is there a (safe) way to cause a GPU lockup so that I can go ahead and file a bug, rather than waiting until it happens again?

  Pushing new Sparkle releases of our internal apps is a pain. I have to make the build, make the release notes file, sign the .zip with the private key, and add a new entry to the appcast file tying everything together. I'd love it if Jenkins could help: use the commit messages for the release notes, and automatically do the rest of it. Should I be looking at writing a new Jenkins plugin, or using shell scripting, or is there something already that will do what I want? (A quick Google didn't find anything.) I'm new to Jenkins, and am still trying to get a feel for what it can do. Do any other maintainers of Cocoa apps have any tips?

  I'm trying to wrap my head around how to organize components in an Entity Component Systems once everything in the current scene/level is loaded in memory. (I'm a hobbyist BTW) Some people seem to implement the Entity as an object that contains a list of of "Component" objects. Components contain data organized as an array of key-value pairs. Where the value is serialized "somehow". (pseudocode is loosely in C# for brevity) class Entity { Guid _id; List<Component> _components; } class Component { List<ComponentAttributeValue> _attributes; } class ComponentAttributeValue { string AttributeName; object AttributeValue; } Others describe Components as an in-memory "table". An entity acquires the component by having its key placed in a table. The attributes of the component-entity instance are like the columns in a table class Renderable_Component { List<RenderableComponentAttributeValue> _entities; } class RenderableComponentAttributeValue { Guid entityId; matrix4 transformation; // other stuff for rendering // everything is strongly typed } Others describe this actually as a table.   I've tried a few times to look at the source code for various things from github or other sites, in javascript, C#, PHP, etc. I'm never able to understand the programs as a whole though. I can sort of piece together what a specific snippet of code does, but I quickly lose the context of what I'm looking at and how it fits in. I want to be able to improve, but everything I've tried learning from so far has been too big. Where can I find well-written, but not very complex source code to look at? edit: Sorry, to be more specific, I'm hoping for javascript/php/C#.

• How can I delete, break, or otherwise convert cross references to simple text in microsoft word 2013

  Cross referencing figure and table captions is useful while editing a document but can become confude when copying and pasting between large documents. I need to pass my document to a colleague who will collate my document with others and has requested that I remove or delete any cross referencing so that my "correct" cross references do not interfere or get interfered with by any other cross references that may be in my colleagues master collated document. My document will be cut and pasted into the master and no further complicated instructions after that point will be tolerated by my colleague. Is there a simple way to convert my cross references to simple text? I am using microsoft word 2013.

  I've been working on an online 2 player Tic Tac Toe solution for blackberries. both old and new. And so far I have html5 code that has a 3 x 3 layout that switches between x and o for the game mechanics. I believe I'm still missing a check for win function but my question is about the server side of this game. I'm not sure how to go about learning what exactly I want. how do you take what I have now, and make this into a functioning online game? I've been told WAMP is a good solution, as well as IIS. and its all really over my head, so i'm hoping to get a little more clarity as far as what I should focus on to bring this game to life.

  What Obj-C/C libraries have you used for manipulating git repos in your Mac apps? I am working on a Mac app that I would like to be able to clone and modify git repos. Using git directly is not an option as it is GPL and I'd like to sell my app commercially without opening the source. I've seen libgit2, which I could link, but I'm not sure how to do that properly, and it doesn't appear to implement any of the things necessary for pushing/pulling repos over the git protocol.
