• How to keep the Alt-Tab menu on the second monitor in Ubuntu?

  I'm running the latest Ubuntu version on my laptop, and every day when I arrive at my office I turn on the laptop and plug everything on. That includes a monitor that happens to be larger than the laptop's monitor. I always do my work on the desktop monitor, so I'd like for the Alt-Tab menu to always pop-up on this one. Instead, it's configured to pop-up whichever monitor the mouse is on (which makes sense, but doesn't work for me). Anybody know a way to change that?

• How do I restore the Gnome Panel volume control in Ubuntu 10.04?

  I use alsa, and I don't have a volume control applet on my Gnome Panel. When I right click and select "add to panel", there is nothing that has to do with "sound", "audio" or "volume" in the list, and the "Indicator Applet" or "Indicator Applet Session" things have no volume controls, or properties that would let you enable any sort of volume control. How can I get a volume control in Ubuntu, so I don't have to run aumix in a terminal or something? I've been using Linux since Redhat 5, it's beyond me why these sorts of problems are still around. Someone should just put a damn "Volume Control" element in the list of things to add to the panel, even if it doesn't work, perhaps showing an error message.

My guess is that the partitions 'should' be checked and that they are not being... so how can I get Ubuntu to check the partitions at reboot and keep things nice and safe?   I am setting up a test environment, made up of various Linux boxes, and I have the need to launch an instance of Firefox on a remote machine via ssh. The remote machine has Ubuntu Desktop (11) and Firefox installed. The source machine is a Continuous Integration server and it creates an ssh session to the remote machine from a non-GUI environment. It then runs a script, which tries to launch Firefox on the remote machine. However, since the ssh session is a from a non-GUI environment, there is no display. Is it possible to have a headless X-windows display? i.e. a virtual display in the remote environment for Firefox to run in? What options do I have?

• Ubuntu: On a network with many clients there are two machines that can't access the web via a browser at the same time

  Ok I'm pulling my hair out over this one. We have a wireless network with many clients all working well except two Ubuntu clients running 10.10 that can't access the internet via a browser at the same time. They can both still ping, use Skype etc but can't browse. As soon as the one that can browse exits the network browsing returns for the other and vice versa. As ping and Skype was working I assumed some kind of DNS problem but moving over to OpenDNS didn't solve it, nor did restarting networking or using wired rather than wireless. We also switched out the router, and it still persisted so I'm sure this isn't a network issue. The two clients are both laptops and work fine together on a wireless network at another office (which we don't control). I'm thinking something must be cached from the other network they both use that's causing this but have no idea what. Does anyone have any ideas? I just don't know where to go from here.

I installed it by mounting the ISO with Daemon Tools, and I just did the default Wubi installation. I keep reading everywhere that I need to choose my installation directory, but I don't get any option to do that. These are all the options I get for installation directory. I have a C and D partition on my drive, and I tried installing it on both and no luck either way. Any ideas?

However, I don't know how I can access it in console, or in any other program that requires the path, when it's already connected on Gnome. What's the mount point for that? I tried the mount command but it does not show up.

• Why can't I right click on flash videos in Chrome? (Ubuntu 9.10)

  I'm trying to change the "quality" to low of a Hulu video so I can full screen it with out it being choppy but right click does nothing. When I right click in firefox it brings up a menu. I'm running Chrome on Ubuntu 9.10, is any one else having this issue I tried Google and got nothing back. I use chrome as my main browser, I have to switch to firefox every time I watch Hulu videos. Is there another way I cant change the quality of the flash video in Chrome?

  After installing Ubuntu 12.10, to my pc and giving a patjh in the external HD, its root dir only went into that and all files on the hd of my PC.Now i required the Ex HD everytime to go to either Win or Linux. I deleted the partition made by linux from disk management of Win, and now want to change the boot sector of my HD of PC back to win. Pc is not starting up and showing Grub failure. I have the original win 7 os. I tried with that going to the command line, but what is the command that takes me to DVD. I ve tried 'cd dvd' and 'cd/ dvd'. Plese help.

• How can I get the Android SDK working with Eclipse in Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit?

  I would like to tinker with the Android software development kit, and I have found out that it only support 32-bit versions of the Java Platform and Eclipse. I installed the ia32 Sun Java runtime environment and the 32-bit version of Eclipse. I also used the update-alternatives program to make a java 32-bit preference. Both of these seem to run fine. I also installed the Eclipse android plugins, but my problem lies in the SDK downloaded from Google. When I go to Eclipse preferences and try to tell it about my Android SDK location, there are no SDK targets listed. Has anyone else gotten this running on Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit? Thanks.

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an Asus at3ion motherboard. I have installed the proprietary nvidia drivers and everything is working fine, but it's a but ragged when I move windows etc. I think the issue is called tearing. There is flickering and the window isn't refreshed smoothly. The ion acceleration works fine (I am running xbmc at 1080p completely without any issues). Please note I am not interested in any fancy effects etc, I just want the graphics to be smooth and nice. How can I tune the nvidia driver for this, i.e., what do I need to change in the Nvidia X Server Settings?

  I have the latest Ubuntu installed and I'll be the only one using it off the network. My question is: how can I make myself super user at all times? Because when I try to delete a file it says I don't have privileges to do so. I know you are going to say it's a security risk but I'm off the network and want to learn all that I can. I don't want to delete the files through the terminal but want to do it through the user interface/explorer. I've installed LAMP and can't copy my site to the www directory. I've tried to remove the preinstalled index file and it won't let me.

• Ubuntu server security; Is this enough?

  I have a classifieds website, which uses php5 and mysql, and also java (solr). I am new to linux and VPS... I have installed SSH, and I have installed IPtables, and also I have PuTTY which I use as a terminal. Also, Filezilla is installed on my computer, and whenever I connect to my VPS, the "host" field in Filezilla says "Sftp://ip-adress" so I am guessing it is a safe connection. I used this command to find out if I had SSHD installed: whereis sshd and it returned some places where it actually was installed. So I havent actually installed it. Now, my Q is, is this enough? What other security measures should I take? Any good articles about security and how to set it up on a VPS? Remember, I have a windows xp OS on my laptop, but the OS for my VPS is Ubuntu 9.10. Also, I have apache2 installed... Thanks

• Why does the terminal in unity 2d (Ubuntu 11.10) always stay in the foreground?

  I have just updated to Ubuntu 11.10 and I am using unity 2d. My terminal applications (gnome-terminal or konsole) just won't go into background. When I move another application in front of them, they are still rendered, but the clicks are going through them. This behavior only appears when the terminal windows interact with another applications. I can move one terminal over another without a problem, but even the menu list of a terminal application can not be shown, since it is - for some unknown reason - "behind" the terminal. Any ideas what might be the cause of this problem? I do not have this problem with my other machines. The only difference is, that I am using unity 2d here and ("normal") unity at home.

• Ubuntu no longer prompts for root privilege (but doesn't give it either)

  So on 14.04 LTS I was playing around with some settings to solve another problem, and somehow managed to screw things up and now Ubuntu no longer asks for root privileges before trying to perform administrative actions. The catch is that my user does NOT have them by default, which means those actions ALL fail. I can still run "sudo " from terminal and it'll ask for my password and work fine, but any GUI that requires root just fails without asking anything. Any ideas what I did wrong and how to solve it? • How to partition USB drive for Ubuntu installation?

  I am not a computer savvy and need to know how to partition my USB drive without messing up my laptop. I already have the boot order set up properly and the USB drive already has the ISO image downloaded onto it. I am ready for install but just do not know how to partition. I am installing Ubuntu 12.4 LTS onto a USB. Can someone help me? I need an easy walk through please. What I need to know is from the screen shots above do I use the swap drive and if so how do i partition that drive to be my drive? I am stuck up to this part on the installation process. • Slow Ubuntu 10.04 after long time unused

  I'm at spring break so I'm back at my parent's house. I've turned my computer on which has been off since January and its unusably slow. This was not the case when I last used the computer in January. It is running 10.04, Memory: 875.5 MB CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ Available Disk Space: 330.8 GB I'm not seeing a large usage of either memory or Disk I/O. If I look at my list of processes there is only a very small amount of CPU usage. However, if I hover over the CPU usage graph that I've on the top bar, I sometimes get really high readings like 100%. It took a long time to boot, to open firefox, to open a link in firefox. As far as I can tell everything that the computer tries to do is just massively slow. Right now, I'm apt-get dist-upgrading to install any updates that I will have missed since last time this computer was on. Any ideas as to what is going on here?   I want to move some files from my PC to Nexus 7. The tablet is connected to my PC's USB port and it is successfully charging. Unfortunately, the PC is not detecting the devices - what I expected is to be shown the Nexus 7 tablet as external devices (like my USB flash memory). As the tablet is connected to the my home internet network, I have checked if it will appear in the "Networks" section but it does not. I am using Ubuntu 12.4 LTS. Is there a easy way to connect the devices to my PC and move some information between them?

  I have the following configuration, A host running Windows 7; A guest running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (VirtualBox); I am connecting a Cisco router directly to my PC running Windows 7 and testing the router for netflow packets in the virtualBox I am having a difficulty capturing the traffic of the netflow from the Cisco device in my virtualBox using port 2222. I tried to use the many different networking modes provided by virutalBox (i.e. NAT, Bridged Adapter, Host only adapter) but I am not successful in capturing the netflow traffic. Could you please advise me on the configuration setup that need to be done on the virtual box to allow capturing the traffic coming from the router. I successfully capture the netflow traffic on my PC (windows 7). Thank you

• Install unetbootin on Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to install UNetbootin on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I downloaded the executable file from this link and followed the instructions below: If using Linux, make the file executable (using either the command chmod +x ./unetbootin-linux, or going to Properties-Permissions and checking "Execute"), then start the application, you will be prompted for your password to grant the application administrative rights, then the main dialog will appear, where you select a distribution and install target (USB Drive or Hard Disk), then reboot when prompted.\ So I typed on my terminal sudo chmod +x unetbootin-linux-584 and tried to execute the binary file with ./unetbootin-linux-584 but got this output: ./unetbootin-linux-584: error while loading shared libraries: libXrandr.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory However when I checked for libraries libXrandr on my system I actually found them $> locate libXrandr /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2.2.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr_ltsq.so.2 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXrandr_ltsq.so.2.2.0 so I really don't have a clue of what's the problem and how can I fix it, any ideas?

• Why was libhal removed in Ubuntu 13.10?

  After installing 13.10, I realized libhal was no longer a sudo apt-get install away... in fact it was no longer anywhere to be found (except in the Raring Repos). And installing libhal from the raring repos is not the best option. It is the best workaround for not having it. Why was it removed? Was it an accidental removal, or is it no longer going to be included in the repos, even in the next LTS? I ask because Amazon (and other services) require it to be installed.
