• Using screen to monitor non-interactive scripts (or some other solution)

  I have some autonomous scripts that run commands on remote machines over ssh. These scripts rely on getting stdout, stderr, and the return code of each command run. I want to be able to monitor the progress of the scripts on each target machine so that I can see if something has hung and possibly intervene if necessary. My initial idea was to have the scripts run commands in a screen session, so that the person monitoring could simply attach to the session with screen -x. However, it was hard to do that from a script since screen is an interactive program. I can send a command to the screen session with screen -S session -X stuff "command^M", but then I don't get the output and return code that I need back. My second idea was to put script /path/to/log in ~/.bash_profile and log the entire session to a file. Then the monitoring person could simply tail the log file. However, this doesn't provide the interactivity that I was looking for. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

• Unable to create files in a directory

  I have created a directory in Virutalbox. Using VBoxManage, I am executing a script inside the Ubuntu VM directory I created above from Ubuntu host OS. But if the script in the VM contains commands for creating a new file, they are not executing. "echo" commands before and after the touch ommand are working fine. I even used root user for VBoxManage to install. I think the directory is not allowing the files to be created . How can I make a directory in Linux to be 777 to all new files created automatically. I mean, even if I make the directory (chmod 777 dir), I am unable to execute the script from the host. Please help. It may be simple permissions problem. Even root is unable to execute. • Compiz and Desktop Effects on Netbook with External Monitor

  I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off. I've seen a few mentions of this problem on the Ubuntu forums, but never a solid solution. Any ideas? A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB). In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

• Command prompt cannot find PATH variable

  Sometimes, my command prompt cannot find the PATH variable. I have this occasional problem at work where when I open command-prompt and run commands like ipconfig or subst, I get an error saying something like 'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command. When I try this echo %path%, it prints out %path% instead of the PATH value. If I look at my Environment Variables window, the PATH is defined right there but I don't know why CMD can't find it. At this point, I understand why the other commands were not being recognized since their paths are in PATH variable. However, I cannot understand why the PATH variable is not being found. If I restart the computer, everything is back to normal. In a few days, I might have the same experience again. I tried using this answer. It suggested changing a registry value but mine already had the value that was suggested yet it wasn't working. (The restart step at the end would have solved it as usual but that's not the point.) Any suggestions regarding why the PATH variable may become invisible every now and then and how I can prevent it from happening again?

• Ruby on Rails: url_for :back leads to NoMethodError for back_url

  Hi all, I'm trying to use url_for(:back) to create a redirect leading back to a previous page upon a user's logging in. I've had it working successfully for when the user just goes to the login page on his or her own. However, when the user is redirected to the login page due to accessing a page requiring that the user be authenticated, the redirect sends the user back to the page before the one s/he had tried to access with insufficient permissions. I'm trying to modify my login controller action to deal with the redirect properly. My plan is to have a query string parameter "redirect" that is used when a forced redirect occurs. In the controller, if that parameter exists that URL is used; otherwise, url_for(:back) is used, or if that doesn't work (due to lack of HTTP_REFERER), then the user is redirected to the site's home page. • OpenGL/SharpGL - Points only on -near surface of Ortho projection?

  When you create points using three dimensions for each point and you use an Ortho projection to view the points, would there be a reason that only the points on the -near surface would appear? For example, if you use (the SharpGL method) gl.Ortho(0, width, height, 0, -10, 10), only the points at z=10 (because the near surface is at -10) actually show up. I'm currently using SharpGL - but I'm hoping the issue I'm having isn't with that particular implementation/library. EDIT: I'm adding the code below that demonstrates the issue. Note that this example requires SharpGL and is in fact a modification of a WPF sample project that comes with the current SharpGL source code (the original sample project is called TwoDSample). The project requires a MainWindow.xaml and a MainWindow.xaml.cs. • how get validation messages from mangomapper using rails console ?

  Hi, I am basically teaching myself how to use RoR and MongoDB at the same time. I am following the very good book / tutorial : http://railstutorial.org/ I decided to replace Sqlite3 by MongoDB using the mongomapper gem. Everything works out about alright, but I am having some non-blocking little issues that I truly wish I could get rid of. In chapter 6, when working with validation I got 2 issues: - I don't know how to get the validations messages back like with Sqlite3. The "standard" code is: $ rails console --sandbox >> user = User.new(:name => "", :email => "[email protected]") >> user.save => false >> user.valid? => false >> user.errors.full_messages => ["Name can't be blank"] but if I try to do the same with MongoMapper, it throws an error saying that errors is undefined function. So does it mean that this is simply not implemented in mongomapper / mongo driver ? Or is there some other clever way to do this that I could not figure ? • Making Thunar the default file browser without hiding the desktop icons

  I really dislike Ubuntu's default file browser, nautilus, and decided to opt for a lighter alternative (Thunar or Xfe). I've used the following script to change the default to Thunar, but now all my icons are gone from the desktop ! The files are still there, in /home/myid/Desktop, but they do not appear. Is there a way to show them, or is this a consequence of removing nautilus as the default file browser ? • Overwrite archetypes in Maven

  Hello again! I'm having some trouble using Maven for my archetypes and I will need to overwrite some. I launch an instruction that does an archetype:generate in an archetype already existing directory. Is there a parameter that let's me overwrite existing archetypes? I have search the maven definitve guide but it states that the only parameters accepted are: -DgroupId -DartifactId -Dversion -DpackageName -DarchetypeGroupId -DarchetypeArtifactId -DarchetypeVersion -DinteractiveMode I could just search the directory and delete the files, but this proccess is going to be done automatically (so no human involved, no brains involved) and I wouldn't like he machine deleting things around.   I am creating a model-first Entity Framework 4 app that uses SQL CE as its data store. All is well until I call ObjectContext.SaveChanges() to save changes to the entities in the model.   Afetr using the Model library (see this) for my Maven pom.xml during this weeks I jumped on this error while attempting to write a ConfiguratonContainer into the pom.xml. The javadoc for Model says: public void setConfiguration(Object configuration) Set the configuration as DOM object. Parameters: configuration - So I made some xml with Document (org.w3c.dom.Document) and the xml parser standar javax library. You know the code (it's through all the net) but I paste it here... DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); DocumentBuilder parser = factory.newDocumentBuilder(); Document doc =parser.newDocument(); And then you fill the code with Element declaration,a lot of appendChild and such. And tried to make it work. Doesn't seem to do well. First tried using plugin.setConfiguration(doc); But it didn't work. Then I tried Obejct obj = doc; plugin.setConfiguration(obj); But it didn't work. Then I searched the net for answers, and guess... It didn't work. There are like 0 people using this library (maven.model) in all the net. So here am I again, asking the senseis for help. Where is my error? I have downloaded the source code of the library trying to see where is the error, but it seems to be ok (as should).
